  • Mormon Stories Podcast guest and former CES employee, Marc Oslund, talks about what happened when he played 20 minutes from Netflix's "Queer Eye" for his Mormon seminary class. Hoping to teach his students that "the worth of souls is great in the sight of God" (D&C 18:10), Marc is ultimately chastised for mis-representing the CES program's position on LGBTQ issues.

I left the Mormon church at the age of 18 .. and I was beaten so badly that I was nearly unconscious. When my step father (who later became the ward bishop) stopped, I stood up with the room spinning and said "are you finished?" ... That was the last day i ever spent in their house. In my experience Mormons don't let family members leave easily. The other thing is that I was/am gay, and even though i was young, it didn't take a rocket scientist to recognize the number of closeted gay men in mixed marriages (one, pretty sure was a gay man and lesbian couple. It was never talked about openly, though even at my young and very inexperienced age, it was clear what i was seeing. Thanks to Marc for doing this in hiis Seminary class. Who knows but that there were LGBTQ people in his class who were gay and trying their best to come to terms with who they were.

Marc had to know someone would complain. Heaven forbid the youth would be exposed to things of this world. Parents need a dose of reality. They are going to have to know this stuff, including LGBTQ2 issues in many professions they choose. I tried to have an outreach program with my ward where we would deliver lunch to the three homeless camps we have in my city. I wanted to invite the youth to help out. Parents shot that down since they are overprotective. Once again, they need exposure to people who are "different" from them because that is what they will need in their jobs. More important, it is the mandate of Jesus Christ that we do so.

My uncle had an experience like this as a seminary teacher. Just a whole bunch of BS and lying to cover their own asses, and he ended up being forced to leave.

Number one rule of Mormonism: Don't ever question authority.
I learned that lesson the hard way. And left the church fifteen years ago. Mission presidents, bishops, even virtue-signaling old ladies. I questioned them and had to endure numerous chastisements. I never learned the lesson because all I heard from them was "I want to hear my opinion in your voice."

I loved Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the original version from the early 2000s. The guys on the show seemed to have good hearts. I always thought a nice reverse on the show would be called Lumber Jack Eye for the Queer Guy, where rough lumber camp workers would show the gay guy how to drink beer, watch strippers, eat burgers and fries, how to BBQ, how to hunt deer and moose, how to fish, go camping, how to drive a pick up truck, and dress in lumber jackets, plaid shirts and work boots.

I think it's a good lesson to help them understand you don't need to hate or devalue them, at the same time it's important to establish that the lifestyle they live isn't what god expects of us

At basis, Queer Eye practice the Golden Rule. Further, they carry out the Corporal Works of Mercy* in some very inspiring and, yes, radical way.
The LDS will have none of it.

If you want to be technical the worth of every soul is great even those of rapist and murderers. But God has laws and their worth doesn't alter his laws.

The problem with My fellow ex- Mormons who leave is they come from very flawed theology.
We actually aren’t beautiful to God, because of our sinfulness. God is holy, and far more greater than Mormons believe. Because of his goodness he has mercy on us and loves us for no reason, other than that HE is love. 1 John 4:19 19 We love him, because he first loved us.
The more I ponder this doctrine the more amazed I am at his rich mercy that while we were still sinners he died for us to cleanse us and to dwell with us forever.

@@BrianTerrill I’m not sure how you came to that conclusion.
I certainly hope that is not what my comment says.
What I said was the truth in love.
I care so so deeply for my Mormon friends.
God loves them far more than I do, they are in good hands. God is faithful, when we are not.
