I want to share with you here a sweet moment from Hasidic Williamsburg - an elderly man commenting on my wearing red. It's a bit of loving teasing.

The following quote by Flemming Rose comes to mind: "When I visit a mosque, I show my respect by taking off my shoes. I follow the customs, just as I do in a church, synagogue or other holy place. But if a believer demands that I, as a nonbeliever, observe his taboos in the public domain, he is not asking for my respect, but for my submission. And that is incompatible with a secular democracy."

This video, once again, shows what a beautiful person you are Frieda❣️You showed yourself very open, honest and vunerable❤You are such a soft-spoken, respektful and kind person. You have shown that over the years in your videos... and the people you deal with on a personal level experience your respectful attitude, your deep rooted knowledge of this way of life that you used to be a part of. I also sense a deep gratitude for your family and the way you were raised. The people you meet can feel all of these qualities, that are far above and beyond the (non-offensive, non- provocative) clothing that you wear. You have such a deep understanding of your roots and your identity now. People feel that, people respect that Frieda. Everyone wants to be liked /loved for who they really are - and I applaud you for the courage of showing your true colors - to the community and to everyone watching your videos🎉

As someone who joined the Jewish community out of love and was raised in a very conservative Greek Orthodox Christian environment (and later left, like Frieda), I don’t think I could offer Orthodox Christianity the same level of respect that Frieda gives to Hassidism. When you look up respect in the dictionary, you see her face.
Frieda has truly done these communities a service by humanizing them. Frieda, please continue what you’re doing. You’ve opened up a culture and a world to people who might have otherwise dismissed it as backward, awkward, and primitive, thanks to skewed docudramas like "Unorthodox."
BTW, my girlfriend and I were in Crown Heights shopping for Judaica and baked goods last week. We wore modest street clothing (I didn’t take off my baseball cap because I didn’t have a kippah). From what I see, you always dress in a modern, respectful yet casual manner. Many years ago I was in my hometown, I was picking my grandmother up to take her to church. She was in her 80s, always wore dresses to church, a hat or chapel veil. It was bitter cold and she had put on a nice pair of slacks , loose fit around the leg, she asked me if I thought God would be mad at her for dressing this way in church. I told her He would be happier to have her there than frozen or sick in the hospital. She had a complementary turtle neck long sleeved sweater on, and her below the knee winter wool coat, and wool hat. You are doing your job, nurses were thrilled in the 1970s when we were allowed to wear pantsuit. We didn't have to worry about what people could see if we bent over, reached above our heads etc. Bless you.

Especially now with everything going on and the hatred towards Jews, this work is more important than ever; people must learn about the Jewish faith including all sects. I think a frum person seeing a lovely person like you with your refined upbringing on your face, it is somewhat upsetting to see you on the outside. And yes- we want you back.
But you explained your position so well, and I think your love reflects and people can really relate to you and your position, and perhaps you can eventually show people how to understand people from the community who have no bad intentions, but who are not made for this environment and who may want to find another way to G-d.

What a Kiddush HaShem those in the community perform when they accept you as you are now and show that they care for you as a person! I agree with you that education and discussion is key to understanding the differences that people have. If the Hasidic community cannot do this from within, then it needs you- who know both sides so well- to educate. Thank you again for the wonderful work you do.

You are a beautiful person that is increasing understanding between various groups of people that don’t always share lived experiences. So of course there will be questions and I think the discussion is great.
People can be true to themselves and their culture by speaking out about what respect means to them. Mainly I wear long skirts and long sleeves and I personally would try to be respectful by avoiding eye contact with religious guys and not hold out my hand when getting change in a shop to respect their boundaries if I’m in a location where there are a lot of people just living their lives and have made a mutual agreement to maintain a religious environment. Thank you

Once again, you have proven yourself to be beautifully articulate, remarkably sensitive and most of all soul-full in your reflection. Being an insider versus an outsider is seen in many aspects and dimensions in our society. You mentioned the experience of a nurse being identified by her uniform. I have recently retired as a neonatologist where people in the hospital identified me for who I was by my scrubs "uniform with a stethoscope around my neck." How very different it is now when I visit my former intensive care unit out of uniform. I appreciate your thoughtful candor and your emotion. Yes, I think we all code switch to a degree when the situation calls for it, not with maliciousness or pretensiousness rather, out of respect and dignity. Thank you again for a beautiful and meaningful video. Greetings from Rapid City, South Dakota. Kol Hakavod.

This was such an interesting video.
I feel you’ve always been very respectful with everything you do and say.
People on the community wouldn’t communicate with you if they thought you are in anyway disrespectful.
I acknowledge people will think differently and I praise you for making this video to recognise these people.
But it feels to me like people are being picky and trying to go out of their way to find fault.
You found kindness and love as you said in this video.
Hold onto that and not the ‘keyboard worriers’ who only make themselves feel good by finding flaws in others.
You warm my heart with every video, and I always look forward to seeing the next edition.
You are doing an amazing job and in my eyes you pull it if perfectly.

Thank you for taking the time to speak openly about respect vs. imitation. You are right not to dress just like the Hasidic women. But to show respect by not violating the rules for outsiders. They are showing respect by explaining what is expected. I always explained to my children the expectations of behavior/dress for any place we went.

Thank you Frieda. I started watching your videos a year ago & enjoy them as they are every informative and educational. I grew up in Brooklyn as a teen was very aware of Hasidic community though did not understand it until later in life having Jewish friends & family. I was raised Catholic & also wasib all girls classes when young. Clothing does speak volumes about the person. It's a shame that many don't have respect for others. I truly think the companies of bus tours are in error not informing those who visit as a 'tourist ' how to dress in being respectful to the community. Tourism obviously helps the community financially & there's the downside. I wish you well in your journey. May you stay safe & blessings to you and your wonderful son.

Fascinating, as always. I love how thoughtfully you speak and the elegant choice of words. You've definitely shown the beauty of the Hasidic community through your videos over the past couple of years. I understand you're just being your authentic self, and showing respect to the level that is expected and appreciated of outsiders. But it still reminds me a little of one of the things my grandmother used to complain about. She was a devout Roman Catholic, and always hated when the priest would face the congregation during mass as she thought that symbolized the priest was representing God to the people. She preferred the old style where the priest would face the altar, the same direction as the congregation, because she thought that symbolized the priest was representing the people before God. There's something similar there with your modern clothing, a sort of visual demonstration of the fact that you're not trying to portray yourself as a representative of the Hasidic community when you guide tours in the neighbourhood. You're there to work, and although you come from the community and have a wealth of insider knowledge, you're there as a representative of the outsiders in your tour group - and you go above and beyond to try to ensure they're able to respectfully visit and gain a small insight into what makes the community so interesting.

    • @FriedaVizelBrooklyn
      @FriedaVizelBrooklyn  3 месяца назад +2

Yes very interesting analogy. And I can see why people like your grandma would have a problem with the “priest” not be “one of”, as in, my own being a step apart from the “congregation”. However, that distance gives me a kind of intellectual liberty that I wouldn’t otherwise have, so you win some and lose some.

After the Holocaust the Satmar Rebbe and other rebbes came to America because of the freedoms guaranteed by our Bill of Rights. Members of the community cannot honestly pick and choose which rights they like. Nobody is saying if you come into my Christian community you must remove your religious inspired clothing. Their rights to free expression are respected. If there’s a fear that your trousers and short sleeves are corrupting their men teach the men not to be corrupted.
