Thank you from bringing us this video. Bless Mrs. Schiff, she is such a remarkable woman. I was born in 1946 in a small village near Munich, Germany - my father saved my mother, siblings, grandmother and aunt from the train - My father was not Jewish, but he was a Sargent in the regular German Army, so with his status and some money he got my family off the train and told my mother to run into the forest and keep going South and he would find them! She also had help from the German farmers and they were able to stay in the barn and were given milk for my twin brothers and my sisters. So, she wound up in Schliersee, Germany where I was born. But my mother's family - the Misch family - went to Dachau! It is a time in history that should never be forgotten and should forever by remembered so that it will never, ever happen again!!!!
Quite a story. My great grandfather was from the Netherlands. His cousin lived in the country and she kept and hid several Jewish children. When the Germans would come, she had them run out the back door and hide in the woods. The children managed to survive the war. It’s incredible what people went through. Those were awful times.
Wonderful interview. This is history that needs to be shared and remembered. If we don’t learn from theses horrible times, they will be repeated. Thank you for your caring interviews.
Sadly, they’ve been Holocaust before this and as I type this there having mass killing at this moment in China, Africa, etc 😰😭 they wiping out entire populations of people. I don’t think the world learned anything!
Mrs Shiff tells the story of thousands and thousands of Jews that were killed in the Holocaust exactly as it was . My grandparents uncles and aunts cousin were all murdered in Auschwitz .my parents of blessed memory who were born in Hungary went through the camps and Auschwitz surviving and being liberated the same time as Mrs Tova Schiff . They also settled in the melting pot of Williamsburg Brooklyn in 1949 where I was born . Frieda keep up these interviews of survivors because in a few years none will be left .
I’m so happy you’re here for it! Some days it gets discouraging, especially for long content which doesn’t get as much interest in an age of very short content. Thanks for leaving a comment about it!
You could listen to Tova and Pearl for hours. You get a whole different perspective on life and take away so much! Thanks for the great interviews and gladly more of it!
I miss nyc and can’t wait to visit again soon and maybe live there again! I’m still travelling the U.S. trying to get errands accomplished. Thanks for sharing your stories as well as day to day!
The work you are doing to preserve first hand accounts of history is so important. Thank you for taking the time to do this, and thank you to this precious lady for sharing her story.
47:23 Her “I’m going up and down!” is my absolute favorite. My great grandmother is 103 and I’m 100% sure one of the reasons shes made it this far is because she was always “going up and down” to her home with her loaf of bread from the corner bakery. Bless her heart and thank you for letting us hear her story. 🖤
What a wonderful thing that you got to meet Tova and that she was willing to share her story with the rest of the world. Thank you, Tova, and thank you Frieda!
I’m from Australia, I tumbled down a utube rabbit hole and came across your channel. I’m not particularly religious but I really enjoy learning about different cultures and faiths. These women are amazing. How wonderful that you have documented their stories.
Bless you, bless you, bless you for this wonderful interview. I went to primary school in Manhattan with a child who was the "second family" of Holocaust survivors. I remember being frozen in awe in her kitchen, seeing her mother's number tattoo on her arm. The same thing happened many years later while volunteering on a kibbutz in Israel. These stories are SO important.
RUclips is beyond honored to have Tova's story shared with us, the world.! And I wonder, Frieda - if you could ever do a segment of the community's response to what happened on 9/11 seeing as many OGs like Pearl and Tova recall life in New York way longer before most of us could and I'm sure many would find it interesting to see if the attack impacted the community as it did to the rest of NYC. It would be interesting to hear Tova share her memories seeing as she lived in New York so long and Pearl too.
I am watching this here in Ireland on a Sunday morning. I am loving it and learning so much from all your videos. I am not Jewish but love your culture. Thank you so much. 🇮🇪🇮🇪☘️☘️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm enjoying watching all the videos! Thank you for the "personal" touch. It is so important to document the stories of the survivors. The further we move from the holocaust, the more it is important to hear the stories and experiences. Thank you !
Thanks so much, Frieda! Tova is amazing and reminds me of my own grandma actually coming from Transylvania too and being a Holocaust survivor too! Isten àldjon, Tova! Nagyon köszönjük!
Wonderful interview. I've been listening to this on mother's day as I'm tinkering around my house. What a nice gift - to hear a woman's inspiring life story. I agree with Andrea's comment. If people would listen to the wisdom of these amazing elders and emulate their example of perseverance through difficult times many ills of society could be healed. Thanks Frieda! Happy Mother's Day to you. ❤🌷💐🌼
Hello Frieda, Before I watch Tova's story, I wanted to express how delighted I am to have stumbled upon your channel this evening. Even though I am Catholic, I have always had a deep fascination about religions, most especially the Jewish religion. I initially watched your tour of Williamsburg and then the wonderful "Pearl" series. My gosh what a gem she is, and what a great interviewer you are! I'm hooked and can't wait to watch my way though your videos. Thank you for sharing this version of your tours for others to enjoy. Now on to Tova's story. Elizabeth, Ohio
Dearest Frieda, this video is absolutely wonderful. When October 7 happened in Israel, I said to myself, “The Holocaust never ended.” In other words, antisemitism just goes on and on and on. I am Jewish, and sometimes I am astounded that somehow Judaism has been able to continue. I am writing this at Chanukah time 2024-and I guess miracles continue to happen. Shall I speak frankly? It takes great courage to be a Jew in this world. My girlfriend is a Jew by choice, & sometimes I wonder why she chose such a difficult path. For years, I studied Buddhism, and I love the metta practice where one sends love, kindness, compassion, & healing to the entire world. May we all be free.🩵🇮🇱🌹 Gratefully, and with so much love, Maralyn, social worker & teacher in Falls Church, VA
G-d bless Miss Tova. There are so few people left who shared her experience. Thank you, Frieda, and Tova, for bringing this to us. Her mind is still really sharp!
She mentioned 1940, Satu Mare, the whole area of Northern Transylvania was ceded to Hungary of Horthy. A mentionat anul 1940, Satu Mare, adica toata zona de Nord a Transilvaniei a fost cedata Ungariei lui Horthy.
Fascinating. She is highly intelligent and versed in so many cultures. My family left Europe between the wars, same locale, also devoted to Satmar, but from Manhattan, and experienced life on a different plane, no longer strict, except for my grandfather.
Lovely interview fascinating!! Thank you for preserving history and honoring the memory of those lost in the Holocaust. As an Armenian I have always felt a deep connection to the Jewish people . Blessings
I’m way back in the videos again… Oh I really loved this one. What a wonderful lady. I’m so glad you two met and that Tova was willing to share her story with us all. I remember as quite a young child, when I first really started to understand what had happened during the war, talking to my grandma’s neighbour, who was an Auschwitz survivor. I wish I could remember how he ended up in a tiny village in rural Wales…but I can still remember how I felt, sitting in his lounge, listening to him tell his story. I also can’t quite remember how approx 8 year old me ended up in such a conversation… People’s stories are so important and what a privilege it is to hear them. ❤
Frieda, you ask most interesting questions and are so kind as to take the time and effort to make sure anything viewers may not be clear about is answered fully. Thank you so much for that and these lovely informative videos.
What a lovely conversation... Thank you so much Frieda... you are uncovering treasures for all of us who listen. Tova... thank you for sharing your memories and thoughts.
I know I tell you this in the comments a lot but your videos are just fantastic, you have such a way of understanding people and your friendly warm way you interact with everyone is outstanding thank you so much for your hard work
This was fascinating! Tova was a living history lesson. And Freida you have such a lovely way of interviewing people. Thank you for your channel. I always enjoy your content.
What a wonderful, amazing interview and story. I so appreciate your work, all that you share, those willing to tell their stories and answer questions (like Tova and Pearl) & all that I learn as a result. Thank you, thank you!
These interviews are so interesting and personal. I love hearing the stories from Tova and Pearl and others who are so gracious to allow us to understand their culture and hear about their past joys, hardships or heartaches. I'm slowly working my way through the videos. So appreciative. Thanks, Frieda.....
I don't have anything 'new' to add other than to reiterate on the amazing interview, the importance of keeping these true/real memories alive. Thank you🫶
As an archaeologist interested every day more and more in modern and living archaeology this is incredible. I hope for the good of humanity her story reaches through your Chanel to youth so history is not forgotten so we preserve it love cherish it so we don’t go back to mistakes so hatred does not come back.
What an incredible interview and what a wonderful person she is. I absolutely loved learning from her life story. I think I’ll listen to it all again. Thank you both so much!
I appreciate you sharing this video with us. What a wonderful interview! It was a pleasure to meet such a lovely woman. Mrs. Tova, you are an amazing woman and an inspiration to many! With so many survivors passing on, these interviews are incredibly valuable. Frieda, thank you so much for sharing these fascinating stories with us.
I love your historical stories. As a Christian, I love gaining understanding of the Jewish people. My heart breaks for the people of the holocaust and for what has happened to Israel on October 7th! ❤️🙏🏻
Thank goodness you are getting these stories to preserve. I hope you write a book documenting all of your journeys with the Jewish community. I enjoy your channel so very much and feel you are doing cherished work. Thank you 😊
Thank you Tova for sharing your story. I’m from Romania and grew up during communism. We were not thought that history. It’s important that real people share their story because people can change history in books. We never ever want to repeat that. Please encourage more people to share their stories ❤
We must give THANKS and HONOR to the treasure of these souls. I don't really think we can fathom their sacrifice and loss that in many ways has saved our freedoms. I am in awe of the tenacity and determination of the Jews. I can't express my gratitude enough, and I will listen to every word that they have to say! Peace, blessings, and prosperity.
Thank you for this gift of stories and history and memories. I used to live in Baia Mare and visited Satu Mare. I have a whole new appreciation for the people and the history from the area.
Your ability to listen with intent and compassion as well as be able to ask questions, sometimes being able to push just a tiny bit to retrieve answers is what makes you so good at what you do. Another great video. Great job, thank you for documenting as history is being lost with the passing of each person of that generation.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful interview! It is so fascinating to still hear the Hungarian accent in Tova's speech. I truly wish her all the best!
Frieda this woman is extraordinary! So wise and real. Also, you can tell your care and appreciation you have towards Tova bc of how lovingly you speak to her
I felt like Tova was extremely easy to talk to. After I spoke to her she told me that when she was a secretary in the girls' school, she always looked out for the girls who were lonely or were somehow not in a good place. She's such a no airs person, but something extremely kind at her core. It shows I think in how comfortable I am in her company.
Another great interview. We rented from a hungarian family when I was age 4 -14. They had escaped Hungary. They had a lot of family who gathered for fun. I learned from them and this video brought back so many memories. Thanks to Tova and of course Frieda. 😊❤
Oh Frieda! Thank you so very much for sharing this wonderful woman with us! I didn’t think it could get any better than Pearl but Tova opened up another avenue of the people of Williamsburg. I am really enjoying your videos.
Frieda thank you so much for what you do. Thank you for taking the time to interview the women you have interviewed. I lived in Brooklyn for 20 years and I have learned so much about the Hasidic community and appreciate your content because it’s educational. All this history is so important to preserve to help us never to respete the atrocities that happened during the holocaust.
I mentioned that my mom grew up in this neighborhood. My parents were married there. Many years later, my father was a supervisor in the school system. He was assigned to District 14 in Williamsburg. The people he was supervising told him that if he could not park directly in front of the school that he should not stop. This was the late ‘70’s. He retired.
Agreed. I’m thankful my Dad self published a little book all about his growing up years. My older brothers knew our history in terms of our life growing up as kids but my Dad grew up as a Missionary kid in the NW Territory of Canada. It was a very difficult way to live. They had little money, lived in a log cabin my grandpa built, of course without any modern conveniences or running water, or electricity. Even so he always said he had THE best childhood a kid could imagine. We’re so glad he wrote those memories down & now we all have the stories we grew up with for our own kids & grandkids.
You have so much respect and care for people that you interview. I wonder if it's hard to leave them, perhaps wanting to stay in touch or continue to follow their lives. You're very good at interviewing. I love how you allow them to tell their stories occasionally, guiding the direction when needed. Thank you for bringing us these stories.
I’m a journalist and I got to interview a lovely woman who is a direct descendant of the founder of the Satmar sect of Judaism. I’m not Jewish but it was so beautiful getting to share her story & learn about such a big part of her identity & ancestry.
Many thanks to you and your guest, Tova. I very much appreciate hearing stories from individuals who have lived through so much. Her story was very inspiring and showed the resilience of the human spirit. Her story is priceless and adds to the richness of our culture.
This is so important to hear history from real people. Priceless. ❤
Masterpiece of an interview, keeping the narrative on track. Great that her story is captured. God bless her.

Wonderful interview. This is history that needs to be shared and remembered. If we don’t learn from theses horrible times, they will be repeated. Thank you for your caring interviews.
And if we don't learn it from those who lived it, that history may be changed to suit whatever times may come. It's happened before.
Sadly, they’ve been Holocaust before this and as I type this there having mass killing at this moment in China, Africa, etc 😰😭 they wiping out entire populations of people. I don’t think the world learned anything!

The people he was supervising told him that if he could not park directly in front of the school that he should not stop. This was the late ‘70’s. He retired.
Wow what a powerful story!
Preserving history should be a priority. I'm not Jewish but we as Americans period aren't taking advantage of what our elders can give to us. 😊🙏✡️✝️
This video was done one year ago. It's too bad antisemitism has risen 💯 percent since then.😢
you were meant to meet Tova; such a precious story and so we know where Satmar comes from ❤
You have so much respect and care for people that you interview.
Sorry, the founder of satmer, had no surviving children
Many thanks to you and your guest, Tova. I very much appreciate hearing stories from individuals who have lived through so much. Her story was very inspiring and showed the resilience of the human spirit. Her story is priceless and adds to the richness of our culture.
