This 1 hour journey was on board on of the Heritage Prom Tours (blackpoolheritage.com/) and amazingly cost me just £6 for a 1 hour journey on tram 700, a tram built right back in 1934. For a nearly 90 year old tram she was spotless and really smooth, the only issues we had was with the wind on the day, gusting against the double decker vintage tram. Of course the view out of the front was impacted by the weather, but anybody that has visited Blackpool is more than aware you don't let the weather stop you having fun. In all honesty the tram tour was a perfect escape from the bad weather and it was well heated and comfortable.
As you can see from the video, driving one of these trams takes a lot of concentration more than anything. I don't think I fully appreciated how many pedestrian crossings, road crossings and generally people that can just get in the way. Driving a tram down the sea front definitely takes some skill, and that will only be magnified when the illuminations are on.
This tour runs from North Pier up to Little Bispham, back town to Pleasure Beach and then returning to North Pier, using the special heritage stop at the start and the end.
There are a number of heritage tram tours operated and they also cater for private functions and other events, the website is well worth looking at and the tours are really good value.

Wow that's such an interesting small drivers cab. I didn't know that the driver had to stand up and use the controls so much. I've definitely got more respect for them now. Cool job.
Your telling me! I turned up on the day with about 5 ideas where I could have put my camera, and the cab was too small for all of them 😂 he told me this was a quiet easy run, he said on illumination nights you expect hundreds of people to be on the tracks and you have to be eagle eyed the whole way.

great film and enjoyed it - having been on it i never considered how small the drivers area is in general space or height (see the driver duck down a few times) hats off for standing while driving such a beautiful vehicle
I definitely thought the cab was a lot bigger, when I turned up with my camera there was a bit of a 'hmm what do I do here' moment! It is great to see the concentration in the drivers face, he said this was a quiet day too, apparently illuminations nights are manic!

Thank you very much, definitely one of the trickier ones I have filmed but Blackpool has it's charm in any weather. I am going to upload the footage just from the left hand box at some stage as it's just funny how bad the rain gets towards the end.

Nice video but would have been nice to have the front view fill the screen and the driver in the corner, as most of the screen is basically wasted by visuals that just stay still and don’t change.
I decided to do it this way as nobody had ever put a camera in the cab of a historic like this before, however most people do know what Blackpool looks like if that makes sense. I have uploaded just the front cam on it's own as well, but as the weather was a bit naff it's not the best, I will be the first to admit that.
Love all the videos on this channel -the Ravenglass and Eskdale ones in particular. - do you think it might be at all possible to get something from the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway one day? All the existing RH&DR cab views I can find are either old and low resolution or have the camera placed on the locomotives tender, which, though cool, can obstruct the view somewhat. Either way, these videos are great regardless of which railway they're showcasing
I haven't contacted the RH&DR yet but it is definitely on my radar as a railway I want to visit, I am aware of it and would love to work with them. Failing that I would love to just visit as it is one I haven't had chance to see in person myself yet. I am hoping this year to have a couple of trips to other parts of the UK for railways I couldn't visit in 1 day, Wales has to be one trip and the south coast needs to be another one. If I could persuade my wife to let me get my camper van I am on to a winner!
It's definitely worth a visit, probably my favourite railway that I've visited - they usually put on a pretty spectacular 'end of season parade' gala towards the end of October with parallel runs and if last year was anything to go by, seven locomotives on the front of one train. Looking forward to future videos, Some of the railways in Wales could definitely be interesting too!

@Neil Forbes the reason why the preview was in 4:3 ratio its because it was just that
@@travelingman6511 The preview was 9:16, or "Portrait", which is basically 16:9 turned 90 degrees. to be "on its end". A method of video recording that I would personally *actively discourage* as it defeats the very purpose for why wide-screen TV sets and computer monitors exist in the first place.
@@neilforbes416 well that's you many other video users would use different methods but its entirely up to them the way they video a segment personally in my opinion i think his videos are good but again everyone has their own opinion the way videos are made

I was disappointed at first I will admit, but then I realised how many rainy days I have spent in Blackpool, it is just part of it some days. I have to say for £6 it was a hour well spent in the warm!
What about the single deck trams, is there no seat for the driver?
I do believe they stand up on all the historics (single and double decker) but sit down on all the modern trams. Although I am happy to be corrected.
Probably the only suggestion would be to swap the images, making the view out of the window as the main image, and the view of the driver as the PiP insert. Place the insert at top-left of screen(where the shot is mostly sky for the outward run(up to about 17 minutes), then as the tram goes through that loop, keyframe the PiP to move across to right of screen as the tram comes out of the loop for the return run, so the PiP is still over what is mostly sky.

@@travelingman6511 *WRONG AGAIN!* This is *NOT* Split-Screen. This effect is called *overlay* or *Picture-in-Picture(PiP)* where a second image is inserted into one part of the screen to give an alternate view of a scene(or another scene of something else happening at the same moment). Split-Screen is where two images(sometimes three) are placed side-by-side across the screen, or two images placed one above the other. I've been editing video from long before I started my RUclips channel(s), I used to burn my content to DVD, so I've been at this editing caper for well over a decade. How long have you been editing video?
I will be uploading the 'out the window' shot as it's own video at some stage so people can see it full screen, however towards the end the rain just made it look a bit naff (best word for it).

In Blackpool, why don’t you give them the option to Travel on an old tram or one of the modern drums I know disabled people cannot get on the old trams. At least if you have the modern tram running as well, they have got the option for disabled people to get on that tram. It will make a very frequent service on the seafront in Blackpool around Fleetwood.

Not a dumb question at all as I don't have the answer, but I am going to email a couple of people that might.
The driver controls them. Black/White/black buttons to the drivers left side, just by the speedo.

If you're going to preserve a vehicle do it properly. Why has it got those awful bus seats? And that raucous horn instead of the whistle they were fitted with? And it has to be sounded as you pass each stop! For someone who remembers the great days of Blackpool trams this can only be a disappointment. Better than nothing, though.
I only know these trams from when I used to go to Blackpool as a kid in the 90s, before they switched to the modern ones, so they probably brought back more accurate memories for me than somebody older. What seats did they used to have?
