After listening to the many other great guitar players, and then returning to hear Jeff Beck, you realize how masterful he was with a unique & sublime touch that speaks to the soul 🎸
I'm a serious devotee of Donal Lunny, the writer of this song: It is one of his finest. A memorial piece for another musician and friend of Lunny and many other Irish contemporary musicians, it is so soulful it almost makes the listener want to cry. I'm also a long-time fan of JB. He does an exquisite job here of capturing the deep spirit not only of the song but of Irish music. He's joyously mimimicing the sound of wild Irish bellows blown bagpipes, wooden flute and and the soaring fiddle of the original. I've listed to and watched a dozen or so versions of JB playing this song: This one is the most beautiful and touching. The song was originally played and recorded at the 1987 Sean O Riarda Retrospective, O Riarda being the man who most kept Irish music alive in the 20th century. This was put on on Lunny's first album/CD after the final breakup of the groups Planxty and the Bothy Band.: "Donal Lunny", which unfortunately is hard to find. The O Riarda Retrospective Lunny & Co. session, with Declan and other gorgeous songs and musicianship, is available here on RUclips: ruclips.net/video/bDjDhWIJ1ZQ/видео.html
There is only one Jeff Beck his mastery of the guitar has been evolving since he first picked one up. Jeff has literally made the guitar an extension of his soul his voice. This man has been an innovator Master Craftsman of music for six decades. There are very few people that reach this level of virtuosity. Jeff is constantly raising the bar for musicians. He is a gift from God and I truly believe he doesn't realize how gifted he is. He is a very humble private person for those reasons is why I vote Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix as the two greatest guitarist ever end of story. Much love and respect.
Jeff is playing and his guitar is singing. Gorgeous...May,19th 1966 first time I heart him with the YARDBIRDS at the marquee club in London and till that time he is my guitar hero.
RE: Debates on: the importance of the gear. Jeff was amazing with a single pick-up Esquire, a Tele, various Les Pauls, various Strats, amps ranging from Vox to Uni-Vox, Fender and Marshall. His tone is superb through hi-powered amps w/ 4 x 12s, Bassmans, Champs or Super Champs. HE is what sounds amazing. The gear just transmits his creative signal. One of Jeff's drummers told me Jeff would take a new guitar out of the box, plug in and play. He didn't even tune; he's bend the strings into tune.
I agree, it has nothing to do with Jeff's equipment. The sound is him, he was so integrated with the guitar, there is no separation, He gave everything to Music.
leo was no master crafter, a screwdriver and a soldering iron would pull him up...he was a genius for his outrageous playful thinking... his vision. there are MANY very poorly made fenders. however his CREATION is still with us and going strong.
Just when you think he's going to fall off, he stays right on in there with every note, holding you on the edge of your seat and yet somehow you're in a total trance. The maestro has struck yet again? This should be played at every funeral.
Just 6months ago I commented on Jeff's genius playing, and now alas, we mourn the loss of a musical GIANT!!! 😪🎸🙏🏼R. I. P. 💔 Gary Moore, EVH, and now Jeff. I'm watching my childhood idols slip away, it's fucking gut wrenching. May Jeff be at peace now.
Yep, well said. you cannot get perfection by listening you gotta play play play and then keep playing, thats the only way, oh yeh then there's feel, if you aint got that you got nothing ; }
that is NOT a vintage pre cbs fender...it has a roller nut, locking sperzels a twin post bridge and a contoured heel ...hence it is a fender custom shop jeff beck model made in the early nineties. ...anything else?
what are we talking about?...tone? then it's the guitar, the amp, the lead, the age of the strings, the humidity of the room, the density of the atmosphere...etc. or are we talking musicality?...then it's the player. are we on this page because of jeffs tone? or are we here because of the way he phrases his scales, the emotion he creates melodicaly? both..but considering the speakers we are hearing it on, it is VERY much the latter..........the player.
i'm not sure what you're saying. do you mean jeff is who he is as a player because of the guitar he chooses? that's just stupid. he has used many others. as for strats..regardless of their price, they are all 3 single coils, a floating bridge, and a 25 and 1/2inch scale on a solid body, and sound like a strat. i love 'em, got a room full of them. leo is a hero of mine, but if you think jeff owes his dues to the guitar he's using..well you're off your head.
I refer you to my very first comment that sparked this exchange: "It's actually both the guitar and player." which is my way of saying you're not to sound great without great equipment. And you're not going to be great with great equipment unless you know how to play it. I don't know why that was so controversial. Great players can coax a lot of tone from inferior instruments (blood from a stone) but there is a limit. I doubt we really disagree with each other. Cheers. I'm out.
I disagree...Do you think Stevie Ray Vaughan's first two albums would be as good if he was playing a Line 6 digital processor and Ibanez guitar? Tone in integral to music and I don't discount the contributions of the master crafters like Leo.
sell some kid an srv strat and a twin and he'll come back and trade it in two weeks because he doesn't sound like stevie...why doesn't he sound like stevie?

Well said and true!!!
I totally agree. A gift from God (now in heaven). My favorite guitarist. RIP Jeff.
I've always said that long after Jeff is gone, people in higher education will be studing his style and technique. It will never be duplicated. Ever!
Jaw dropping, its beyond any normal guitar technique, there are guitarists and then there,s JeFF Beck
Jeff Beck has always been the greatest of them all .
This song always gives me chills. Incredible composition. And Jeff's mastery of the instrument remains out of the reach of us mortals.
Jeff is playing and his guitar is singing. Gorgeous...May,19th 1966 first time I heart him with the YARDBIRDS at the marquee club in London and till that time he is my guitar hero.
Only be 1 Jeff Beck , so sad we’ve lost this man 🙏🎼🥰
Legend!!!! This rendition by him of the beutiful song by Donal lunny immediately came to mind when I heard Jeff is no longer with us.
Rest in peace GOD. The greatest of all time !

Always a touching tension... What a master...❤
Amazing. As always. Jeff you are SO missed. I always thought what Jennifer Batten was playing was someone with pipes. She is pretty damn good too.
The best of his short sad songs... Gone too God Damned Soon.
Hats off to Jeff the great!
The master
3:05 is just amazing when they played together, awesome!!!

In October I saw him for the final time.saw him so much. Touched my heart and soul. RIP 🙏. I'm 💔
RIP Jeff
Amazing Jeff with intriguing guitar tone and his fingers...
Thank you for sharing. Thank you Jeff.
I have REALLY, REALLY been enjoying 'Who Else' during my hour-long commute.
Gorgeous
Jeff was sooo good that i feel like not even trying
Master Beck!!
Hi guys, never seen him live on stage. But unbelieveable musician.
Peace
Cali
I just saw him again and he is better than ever! If you like his playing, you owe it to yourself to see him!
It's OK don't fret about not seeing Jeff we have his Music and that is who he was.
好喜欢这首曲子,深情、悠扬
この曲は日本的でもあり素晴らしい芸術作品で日本人である私の心を強く打った
If I'm really lucky, I'll get to hear this performance right before I leave this Earth. Some day
Jeff.
Its an Irish song , traditional . Donal Lunny ex Moving Hearts etc
Perfection takes 55 years of practice.
Been playing for 55 years. That doesn't just come with practice
Yep, well said. you cannot get perfection by listening you gotta play play play and then keep playing, thats the only way, oh yeh then there's feel, if you aint got that you got nothing ; }
@@martyconroy3786 you're right,it takes rigourous practice AND talent to rise above......
Only Jeff. I miss Jeff so bad.
realmente beck es el mejor.
a very sad song... for a very sad moment u.u
@OwensMusic1 It's actually both the guitar and player.
I love Jennifer Batten.
..put a pickup on a broom handle and he'll find a sweet tone...it's in the hands and the heart.
o.k. take care...have another listen before you go.. this guy is a really good player.
Jennifer about the only guitarist who doesn’t seem like an idiot on stage next to him. What a great choice
that is NOT a vintage pre cbs fender...it has a roller nut, locking sperzels a twin post bridge and a contoured heel ...hence it is a fender custom shop jeff beck model made in the early nineties. ...anything else?
it's not camera ...it's the photographer !

I used to be stuck on JB for YEARS, but the more I listened the more unstuck I became
Translation please...
Yeass..👆👆👆💪💪💪
i wish i had a guitar like that
Nice. He hasn't played this on stage in a while. Jennifer Batten is the other guitar.
Wow, someone once said that he makes time stop, I'd agree.
the guitar is nothing special..just another strat...they make a thousand a day...it IS the player..it is DEFINATELY the player.
I believe Jeff would do a seriously magical version of Caoineadh Cú Chulainn.
who the fuck is the person who disliked this............
Lol...that's why Stratocasters range from a few hundred dollars to over one hundred thousand dollars. Jeff is awesome...but so was Leo.
i'm not sure what you're saying. do you mean jeff is who he is as a player because of the guitar he chooses? that's just stupid. he has used many others. as for strats..regardless of their price, they are all 3 single coils, a floating bridge, and a 25 and 1/2inch scale on a solid body, and sound like a strat. i love 'em, got a room full of them. leo is a hero of mine, but if you think jeff owes his dues to the guitar he's using..well you're off your head.

No,no. Actually it's the player and the guitar. A lot of people make this mistake.
The man's a fuckin' genius, right up there with Beethoven and the guy who invented the wheel. I don't think that was Beethoven too.
thousands of people play strats, so why are we watching jeff beck if it's not about the playing.
I disagree...Do you think Stevie Ray Vaughan's first two albums would be as good if he was playing a Line 6 digital processor and Ibanez guitar? Tone in integral to music and I don't discount the contributions of the master crafters like Leo.
Nope. Not a chance
it's not the guitar.... it's the player
Absolutely
It is partially the gear, you cant ask a master bricklayer to build you a house and then give him your shit to use as mortar
Fitchie23 this dude would play a squire and rip it in half

That's a vintage pre-CBS Fender....
