You are spot on with you comment. I just discovered AIC (ya it's October 2023 and I am 67). I am fascinated, captivated, mesmerized with the harmonies and heart broken for Layne and Mike. Oh what I missed out on.
Scotty's picking, especially around the 3:44 mark, is awesome. I figured he doesn't get much recognition as a rented band member so I wanted to mention that his talent Level is amazing.
For those that don’t know personally heroin addiction let alone the withdrawal from it is the worst feeling physically and mentally a human will ever experience. I know the story goes he just got a fix back stage before he went on. But for him to give this performance the way he did in the condition his body and mind was in can not and will never be able to be explained. Amazing!
3:06 Despite how unsure Layne sounds with the word "reach", Jerry was actually the one who got the lyrics wrong. It's "reach for something strong". Jerry actually realizes and says "for" instead of "from" for the second word while Layne says "from" because he still thinks he messed up. So Layne sings "ream from" and Jerry sings "run for". I am overanalyzing, but these guys must have had nerves of steel to slip up like this and continue sounding awesome.
I grew up listening to AIC but didn’t appreciate their sound and talent until now as an adult and as a father feel so much compassion for Staley’s situation and yet they continued to create master piece after master piece songs through trials and tribulations. This unplugged concert is historic.
Absolutely love the harmonizing between Jerry, and Layne. It's easy to see why he wanted Layne in the group. It's just a once in a lifetime kind of pairing those two.
My all time favourite Unplugged performance. The way Layne flips his vocals from clean to overdrive so effortlessly is something you cannot teach. It’s just an amazing display of natural talent that we’ll never see again

Staley is simply one of rocks great singers, there’s been better singers than him but he sounds like no one else. It cuts right thorough you and grabs the emotions. Much missed
@@markriley232There were some outliers, but there is something raw about Staley's voice that keeps me coming back. Like Kurt Cobain, but actually really good instead of tolerable.

Never started listening to Alice and chains until a couple years ago and now I must say they’re probably my favorite band of all time. Their music will never die friends.
Man I love this performance. Best one of the unplugged imo. Breaks my heart how grey Layne looks here, and how Jerry is obviously checking on him throughout the concert.

Rest In Peace Layne and all others who died from the disease of addiction . . .
I Would Never Had Made It This Long, without Alice in Chains! I'm 61yrs Now! This Performance On MTV Unplugged WAS THE BEST EVER! Rest in Peace Layne, Thank You. Poster As Well;-)
best unplugged ever. You can find everything in this show: great songs, sadness, true performance no fx, some light, friendship...and that sad feeling that this was going to be a farewell from Layne
By far my favorite Unplugged song! It's amazing how much power he has in his voice and how effortlessly he looks singing it! It breaks my heart watching him.
Can you believe that we live on a planet that gave us Layne? God I miss you man. 💔 Thank you A. I. C. for still providing us comfort when we need it most. My most eternal gratitude for carrying me through difficult times. Love you guys.
If an oreo could sing... soft and sweet in the middle, with the crunchy cookie surrounding all!!! The vocal harmony in this song is insane. I miss you 90's
Sitting here watching I remember my friend, he died on his way to my place. We had tickets to go see AIC that night. Those tickets will never leave my frig.
The level of talent on this stage is just insane. Will another band on this level ever exist again given the state of rock and way the industry is now? I don't think so. Alice in Chains coming together was like lightening striking the tip of a needle, they were a gift from the universe to all of us. This whole set was near perfect.....not many bands could pull this off. I put this right up there with Queen's live-aid performance on the all time great live performance list.
Also, I don't think such a musical revolution that comes from a specific geographical location will ever happen again, so much good music all from Seattle area, so much good music, I didn't think music would ever suck so bad like it does today, so lucky to have lived through the 80sand90s,so much good music, and MTV was actually Kool and showed videos, today, MTV is pure garbage, like most of today's music, thank God for foo fighters, one of the few good bands now, experiencing this whole Seattle music scene was so fucking awesome, I'm sure nothing like this will ever happen again, so many badass bands from one geographical location.
There will never be music like this ever again, Layne was obviously on his way out but bless the rest of the band for a sound and vocals we will never experience again.
It’s good to see Layne come to life a little bit on this one. Head bobbing and what not. I can’t imagine how he felt this night. It’s clear he was fked up most of the night but still had that incredible talent come out on que every time. Best performance IMO.
From what I've heard and read, he was pretty bad. Still, I respect the man for basically forcing himself to be there and give such a great performance.
Just fucking amazing. The harmony these two made together is untouched. Laynes talent was off the chart during the duets. I hope everyone hears this set the way I do. Fucking Incredible
Never can get over how far from the mic Layne keeps his voice. It's so damn powerful. Just pure god given ability that he has mastered with hard work and knowing his voice and sound so well to know little tricks like that. One of the best characteristics of AIC as a whole is how much focus emphasis they put into making their sound
@@ishowsped4728 yeah don't get me wrong I really like it but I think they were kind of experimenting with that type of sound. The unplugged version just took it to a whole another level.
@@iLuseMy1v1s brother is my favorite off of sap the harmonies between layne and jerry are so beautiful better than no excuses tbh, and the solo is exceptional
Being somewhat in his shoes for a time… when you are trapped in the clutches of addiction, you just wanna crawl in a hole & hide from the rest of the world! He went out there in front of all of those people and still went on with the show, what a voice! RIP Mr Staley 🥲❤️✌🏻🤟🏻 2:13
Best performance of Laynes life. He had 1 concert after this and it was amazing also. I struggled with the same substance my whole life and I don’t know of anyone else that could do this while strung out. Amazing
nope, they played an entire tour after this in 1996 opening for Kiss, at least 6 shows? something like that? but i get what you mean, however some drug addicts can play well drugged up.
Most things are actually easier on that particular helper, at least up to a point - and then yes, returns diminish … but there’s a reason people do these things: to quote, I think it was Mitch Hedberg? “Not all drugs are good … some of them are great!” Your fingers feel more limber, your vocal cords loosen up, you’re flexible and disinhibited, after years of gray instead it feels like all the color and sound and flavor have returned to the world, your cares are gone, old grudges disappear, the world is in tune … if you can stay awake, it’s great, and even sleep is better. But like I said, it can have diminishing returns: high cost, dealers suddenly disappearing on you for weeks or trying to make an extra buck my mixing your shit with something stupid or insoluble like baby powder, cops fucking with you just to fuck with you or to meet some quota even though they don’t really give a shit and they’re all on steroids or worse themselves … even if you have the money, it gets messy and unpleasant as time goes on. But it’s still all worth it: again, if it sucked, people wouldn’t do it; the sad reality is, it’s fucking great - it’s just everything around it which sucks, and of course because it’s an unmonitored black market substance you never know what you’re getting, and that can mess up your health in an instant too.
my favorite changes all the time... so safe to say i love all these songs.. but depending on the day, and time of day, ill usually put one song on repeat over the others.. but yeah, they're all catching and soul touching..

You are spot on with you comment. I just discovered AIC (ya it's October 2023 and I am 67). I am fascinated, captivated, mesmerized with the harmonies and heart broken for Layne and Mike. Oh what I missed out on.
Unreal!!! 😔😔💔
@@stevencopley5487better to have missed out and then find rather than look and miss. Here’s to many more years of discovery my friend.

Scotty's picking, especially around the 3:44 mark, is awesome. I figured he doesn't get much recognition as a rented band member so I wanted to mention that his talent Level is amazing.
Was reading this as he was playing it 🤣 2:25 was awesome too
For those that don’t know personally heroin addiction let alone the withdrawal from it is the worst feeling physically and mentally a human will ever experience.
Buy Far the Best unplugged to this day and more!!!
Absolutely love the harmonizing between Jerry, and Layne. It's easy to see why he wanted Layne in the group. It's just a once in a lifetime kind of pairing those two.
The way Layne sang this is just magical!
My all time favourite Unplugged performance. The way Layne flips his vocals from clean to overdrive so effortlessly is something you cannot teach. It’s just an amazing display of natural talent that we’ll never see again
2:12 I GOT THE KINDA GOOSEBUMPS WHERE IT FEELS LIKE YOU'RE CLIMAXING AND THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE INTO SPACE. GODDAMN THIS IS REAL MUSIC.
Coming back to this live show now and then. Every single time , the same.. in awe of layne and the band. The harmonies are just insane. His voice is from another planet. God rest his soul.
Best unplugged album MTV has ever had. ill argue with anyone... This band saved my life probably more than once.
Kurt Cobain where did you sleep last night is special but overall this is better.
Me too!!!!
Layne barely alive still hitting those high notes. What a legend. Rip.
0:50 Layne chacking the lyric sheet for either the word "reach" or "run".
Good catch
If we only knew in the 90s that we were experiencing the last gasp of rock ‘n’ roll, I think we would’ve savored the moment a little more.
Staley is simply one of rocks great singers, there’s been better singers than him but he sounds like no one else. It cuts right thorough you and grabs the emotions. Much missed
When he was at his least drug addled he's easily the best rock singer ever. Even here he sounds amazing even if he is extremely dopesick.
I think he was probably the best…
@@markriley232There were some outliers, but there is something raw about Staley's voice that keeps me coming back. Like Kurt Cobain, but actually really good instead of tolerable.
💯 more so this unplugged than studio versions
3:07 layne goes to say we reach for something strong then stops when he hears jerry singing we run from something strong. ive watched this so many times im starting to notice weird shit lol
The vocals on this one are amazing
Never started listening to Alice and chains until a couple years ago and now I must say they’re probably my favorite band of all time. Their music will never die friends.
Never my friend.
22 and listening to them as if I lived back in the 90s, I will make sure they will never be forgotten ✌️✌️
@@theroamer2355 Us old heads believe in yall.
One of the best ever
Layne is quite the poet
Laynes high harmonies here are pristine. Perfect, gritty, tenor. We lost a vocal genius.
Never a better performance
Man I love this performance. Best one of the unplugged imo. Breaks my heart how grey Layne looks here, and how Jerry is obviously checking on him throughout the concert.
BEST UNPLUGGED EVER..
Being a recovering addict from IV use I heard that " an addict has to die so another can live " , unfortunately it's a fact of life that drugs will take someones mind , body and soul so I hope I don't come off uncaring because that is not my intention but I just wanted to say thank you for giving me another chance at life ! Rest In Peace Layne and all others who died from the disease of addiction . . .
Back when the M in MTV stood for music.
Yep. Fuck the real world and road rules. responsible for both killing MTV and a lot of TV in general. reality shows suck.
@@TheLastLineLive actually their leftist agenda killed it.
@@PsychoMantis308 lol what the fuck are you on? MTV music vids got killed off long before the current political climate.

Just an epic live performance. Jerry and Layne achieved some great harmony, gives you chills sometimes.
I Would Never Had Made It This Long, without Alice in Chains! I'm 61yrs Now! This Performance On MTV Unplugged WAS THE BEST EVER! Rest in Peace Layne, Thank You. Poster As Well;-)
best unplugged ever. You can find everything in this show: great songs, sadness, true performance no fx, some light, friendship...and that sad feeling that this was going to be a farewell from Layne
it took a few years to get him to do this - and this was basically it - he really was not active after this performance
Them singing together is amazing. . Jerry must had been devastated to lose his friend. . .
By far my favorite Unplugged song! It's amazing how much power he has in his voice and how effortlessly he looks singing it! It breaks my heart watching him.
Layne and Jerry have voices that blend so well together
Layne screams beautifully in quiet desperation
Chills. Simply chills the way they harmonize
Can you believe that we live on a planet that gave us Layne?
God I miss you man. 💔
Thank you A. I. C. for still providing us comfort when we need it most.
My most eternal gratitude for carrying me through difficult times.
Love you guys.
The harmonies are fucking immaculate.
If an oreo could sing... soft and sweet in the middle, with the crunchy cookie surrounding all!!! The vocal harmony in this song is insane. I miss you 90's
Sitting here watching I remember my friend, he died on his way to my place. We had tickets to go see AIC that night. Those tickets will never leave my frig.
surferdjnj got chills man sorry to hear that
@@VITALI99XD same
The level of talent on this stage is just insane.
Lanes voice gives me goose bumps in this song
There will never be music like this ever again, Layne was obviously on his way out but bless the rest of the band for a sound and vocals we will never experience again.
Rest in Peace Layne, it's now 2019, 17 years later and I will forever play your body of work.
I think this is wayyyyyyyy better than the studio version
1000%!!! & What a Beautiful Song!! WE need Some MORE of this Style of Music today!!
Of course it is, every song on the unplugged album is better, hell them bones could've been on here and they would've nailed it
Yes for sure!!!
@@johnthefisherman7577 I agree with all except for rooster. I feel like that song needs to blast in sound.
@@alexc656 yeah I can agree with that. But songs like down in a hole for example
Just fucking amazing. The harmony these two made together is untouched. Laynes talent was off the chart during the duets. I hope everyone hears this set the way I do. Fucking Incredible
Layne's voice at 2:16 .....chills
Love it. Layne at his best. This is documented rock n roll history. ❤
This version is 100x better than the studio version. How is that even possible!? Edit maybe 10x better a 100x might be a tad dramatic.
the producing of sap was interesting imo i prefer the unplugged versions of the sap songs
@@ishowsped4728 one of my favorites!
I agree
Being somewhat in his shoes for a time… when you are trapped in the clutches of addiction, you just wanna crawl in a hole & hide from the rest of the world! He went out there in front of all of those people and still went on with the show, what a voice! RIP Mr Staley 🥲❤️✌🏻🤟🏻 2:13
Any old goof can sing a heavy song powerfully, but it takes a master of his craft to sing so gently yet with so much power and emotion
When the two of these dudes sing together it instantly sounds like 4 I don’t get it 😊
so so true YES!
I can't have enough of the bass in this song.
Layne an Jerry singing together is like what a happy marriage of two soulmates should be and is
wtf
my favorite part starts from 0:00 and stops at 4:21
This has to be my favorite song of the unplugged.
Thanks for the upload. The colors and quality so much better.
my favorite changes all the time... so safe to say i love all these songs.. but depending on the day, and time of day, ill usually put one song on repeat over the others.. but yeah, they're all catching and soul touching..
Yeah I really like this one too. I think this is my favorite version of this song.🤔👍
Yeah its so darkly beautiful
This is the BEST sounding unplugged song EVER😁
I'll never get tired of their voices. Incredible harmonies.
The best mtv unplugged ever !!!!
This is probably my favorite harmonizing ever. Layne and Jerry are gold Jerry.... GOLD!
Lanye was a generational talent. His voice was a gift. What a shame he is gone.
