Damn, I heard that this took like 50 takes! They showed us a quick edit of a few of the mess ups just then.. if you notice at one point Layne is wearing shades and the next cut, he isnt... I hope it wasn't true and it didn't take that many. He looks so rough, but it didn't stop his talent one bit. Uhh, unless the person reading this is on drugs and in that case, Layne sucks! He is so much better sober!
@@campbells0ups He's under the influence of something. He was an awesome singer but he was still a junky and the chance of him not performing while fucked up is slim to none.
DanielBx yeah thats why he relapsed at the end of the kiss tours and slipped away after demri died. as far as i know he was not using before any of the '96 shows
@@campbells0ups yeah,he was probably saving the fat hits for after the shows. But anyone saying that he never performed under the influence is just lying to themselves.
Layne was clearly embarrassed at the mistake. Jerry jumping in immediately to point out that it’s normal to make mistakes, that they hadn’t played a show in a while before this, and to lighten the mood, was nice to see. Even Layne wound up laughing it off and going on with the show. As tragic as the rest of Layne’s story would be after this, it’s clear that his band mates loved him.
A declining Layne sounds better than 90% of singers on their best night. So much heart and soul in his singing. There will never be another one like him.
Well really those errors and the authenticness are what give it that “heart and soul.” I don’t mind autotune with also super processed trap beats and electronic crescendo open hi-hat EDM percussion shenanigans. But if you tried taking this, and auto tuning everything, I would throw it out the window because it would sound like unremarkable, C-tier country music. But Layne and Jerry’s gritty harmonizing is what separates Alice In Chains from the pack.
@ David you got that right, especially live and higher than giraffe balls.....the guy barley has to put in any effort and sounds amazing..........Theres a reason this is THE most popular unplugged!!
I can't help to think if he was sober and healthy what kind of music would he have keep making. Then again most of the best artists were high on drugs during the making/playing of their work.
Jerry telling Layne it’s okay, it’ll be alright, is my favorite part of this whole show. He was so happy to be up there with his friend again. And then Layne comes in with pure intensity on the do-over. Just fucking killer all around.
Hell yea. I’m with you on that, I love the studio versions but I come back here once and while just to get a glimpse of what these dudes were like. Sad but great. If you know you know
Jerry was incredible...even when they sung "Down a hole". During the performances he winked at Mike Inez to say that everything was fine. Jerry is a masterpiece man, I love him.
The ironic thing is that as embarrassing as that mistake seemed to be, it’s one of the highlights of the show for some reason. Seeing them laugh and talk like normal people gives us glimpses into their personality and soul and it’s just as good as the music. You killed it Layne. You boys were perfect. Bravo. We love you so much
Hey OP great comment. Also I like to think the little hiccup they had made Layne focus more on his execution so…..made for a better experience for us. Rock on
blakebru97 , never heard of them. I’ll check them out, Okay for the last two days I’ve been checking out their work. I think that’s the closest sound to AIC I have heard. Thank you , it’s been really fun to experience something similar to AIC
there is not there are outstanding bands out there but the appeal of Aic is unlike any other It was a special time and place when these boys walked the stage
Can we talk about Jerry’s abnormally good skills? The depth of the lyrics he has written, his singing and guitar playing skills, the harmonizing, the fact that he was always down-to Earth, always supportive of Layne and believing in him no matter what, always there for him. All the looks he gave Layne throughout the show, full of support, pride and astonishment. When Layne made the mistake he instantly jumped in to assure him that it’s okay. Jerry is so special. I only wish the best for him, he SO deserves it. Such a talent, wow. We love you Jerry!
Breaks my heart, the way he looks at Jerry, so full of pain and shame. a tortured soul, he was one in a million, his voice was a gift from God. My favorite singer of all time, ONE HELL OF A VOICE
@Fck RUclips By the time Layne wanted to quit for good he knew that he was gonna die no matter what. If he quit he was gonna die from widthdraw and if he kept going eventually he was gonna OD. In his last interview he admitted he knew he was dying. And with a drug like heroin it’s not just something you can stop like weed or even alcohol. It’s a hell of a lot harder to quit heroin.
@Fck RUclips No I don’t think you know your drugs. The science of what heroin does to the brain is pretty fascinating if you look it up. Heroin and weed are two completely different drugs. Heroin is one of the hardest drugs to quit because of what it does to your brain. Yes quitting is possible but it’s incredibly hard. Quitting weed is as easy as snapping your fingers. You obviously didn’t pay enough attention in health class or do your research and it shows.
@Fck RUclips Lmao calling me a junkie while admitting to doing drugs. Just stop dude you’re embarrassing yourself. And just because I haven’t done it, doesn’t mean I don’t understand. Be quiet now, you’re just making yourself look like a fool.
You just watch him trying to not nod out. Fucking epic you can hear him slipoing with his speech but then he catches. Legend. Jerry you truly were a gaurdien angel always helping and being there for layne
That’s diamorphine and a benzo, probably diazepam.. he’s on just enough that he doesn’t nod off though but he says the same line twice on rooster I think.. the line Gloria sends me pictures of my boy, he misses it out totally and says same verse twice, he was high here, just not over
@@mennofennema9829 alcohol is a far worse drug than diamorphine.. you don’t get alcohol on prescription for anything anymore. But we prescribe diamorphine and benzodiazepines still to this day as there medicinal. He just wasn’t looking after himself.
I got a tattoo with the phrase “ What’s my motivation here?” To remind me everyday why I want to stay clean from heroin. To remind me of Layne, the struggle, the pain. There’s no glamour at the end of the tunnel with drugs just misery and death.
Excellent idea ! I’m thoroughly heartbroken over the death of Lane Staley absolutely devastated more so now than ever just such a great talent and what’s my motivation here is an excellent tattoo followed by the word fuck I know you understand. God bless you and many years of happy recoveries forever.
That is one of the best ideas and meaning to go behind it! I always think people's quotes are lame and most of them are lol. But as a fentanhl addict myself who's now clean almost 1 year, I have been thinking about getting something to remind me. When you think about it, how a little mistake at the beggining of a song ends up on your skin for life and is a motivator really shows how we're all just connect beings in a small feagment of time. Stay strong!
I hate that everything circles back to his drug use… yes, he was an addict but he was also a million other things too. An amazing singer who has literally brought me out of the depths of depression after the death of my father. People are more then their addictions, disease or illnesses. He sounded a billion times better the second try anyways. Love and miss you Layne. ❤
Drugs are overhyped in Rock. Yes, several all time greats either died from an overdose or had severe mental issues due to drug use. But most all time greats did not. It's just that drugs are prevalent at concerts, clubs, festivals, etc so they are associated with Rock. For example, many people think Pink Floyd did a lot of acid when in reality the most they ever did is smoke weed because they were deadly afraid of LSD after what happened to Syd (of course except for Syd Barrett). Same with the Beatles. Not that acid is even bad like heroin/fentanyl, meth, coke, amphetamines, etc.
The beginning of this song is the realest shit ever. I love the look between Layne and Jerry when he messes up. It's so reassuring. Like he's saying "dude, it's okay. It happens." This whole concert is fucking awesome. I can spend hours watching it over and over. Lost in the melody, music and Layne's powerful vocals. Miss you like hell Layne. Still rocking this December 2019 and into the foreseeable future 💜 AIC forever
The way Jerry Cantrell would back up Layne through EVERYTHING - every interview, every 'mess up', every tabloid exploitation. Beautiful. Layne is iconic and amazing, but Jerry is too in his own right.
Layne took Jerry in off the street and gave him a home , even brought him to family Christmas's making sure he had gifts . Layne was a kind soul and Jerry's best friend .
Layne and Jerry carrying on. The only moment that you get a raw moment of them just being them. Not just playing. Glad this wasn’t edited out. Layne came back and smashed it. That’s what counts.
"What's my motivation here" is the most sincere and respectable thing about the whole show imo. Being a recovering addict who would listen to this exact song while kicking, waiting for my dealer and even while getting loaded, I never really understood how selfless it is to do this for not only his bandmates but fans everywhere. He must have known that it would be the last thing recorded for release and yet he knows that in his world, he has many better places to be that would be more enjoyable. Hating public life and being strung out are the two worst combinations because there is absolutely no reason to be in the spotlight, yet he chose to because in his head, it was over and this would be his lasting memory for his friends, family, and fans. Thank you for doing so much for people like me and your fans all over the world Layne, you will always be remembered and listened to.
But he didn't know it was over until his girlfriend passed, he was just a functioning addict, He needed an intervention and he didn't get it, a junkie with unlimited funds, and a place to get high ...We only reach our bottom when shit goes wrong, Layne never had a reason to stop.
I agree with you, he seems sick and weak but he is there for the band and for fans I suppose. I don't think he had the strenght to enjoy it so I find very sweet he had joined the Unplugged in any case.
Man, that's heavy. I was addicted to heroin so badly that it made me have a psychotic break and I had to be admitted to a psych ward. This was while my ex was being extremely abusive and I guess I couldn't take it anymore. He was actually the one to introduce me to pills in the beginning and later, we went from pills to shooting heroin. My mental state was always fragile, and looking back, it was only a matter of time before I lost it. Once, I OD'd in the bedroom my parents were letting us stay in, and when the EMTs came, it was this huge thing. It woke my parents and my brother and his wife and son up and everyone saw me laying there while they were trying to save my life. My mom thought that I had another brain hemorrhage. She didn't know about my heroin addiction. The doctors were the ones to tell her and I can't forget the look on her face. I was still really out of it but I remember the mix of anger and sadness on her face and she looked at my ex who was staring at me with a look of malice. What the fuck did he expect though? That they weren't going to bring up my addiction and the fact that it was an overdose? My mom told me she wanted to kill him right then and there and I don't blame her. If I wasn't so in love with him and if I never let him into my life, things would have been extremely different. It's been about 7-8 years since we broke up and it was the best decision of my life. I now have an amazing and loving fiancée and I'm sober. Fuck drugs. Fuck heroin. I think Layne's performance of Nutshell is the most heart wrenching thing I have ever seen next to Scott Weiland's last interview. You can see the pain on his face and the sadness in his voice. I think he knew that his addiction wasn't going to end well. I want to reach out and hug him. He looks so miserable 😢
@@sewnkin_fourninethanks for sharing your harrowing story. I’m sorry you had to go through that, but glad to know you’re doing better. You should write more about it. I could feel the pain in your words. God bless.
This version is so much better than the original, i can feel the pain of his struggle with addiction and can so closely relate, it makes feel a certain kinda way
When Layne puts his head in his hands when he messes up he reminds me of a little boy in trouble, if he only knew the power he had over us he would have understood we forgive him.....
Power over us all these years later Kelly. These guys played like it was just another night banging on drums in the garage yet they moved aside all the music I had ever heard and had in my head in this one candle lit show. Timeless! Cheers to all that visit this music.
his ongoing condition made pulling this set off infinitely more difficult than it could've/should've been and no doubt he'd been screwing up along the way, when he was there to screw up at all. he'd likely been having to fend off doubts and concerned MTV/record label people with reassurances of some kind and he must've felt all of their pissed off, judgemental eyes burning a hole through him at that moment. but also, I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about.
The bass during this unplugged is simply phenomenal. So damn in sync with every other musician. Layne and Jerry have my heart, such a pure and organic connection. This is so hard to find today. I just comment on this every other month because it is so special (the entire performance). Will we ever see the likes of this again? I hope so, the 90's was truly a special time xx
Oh yea.. Mike Inez is a very talented bass player. They couldn’t have been more fortunate to have picked him up when they did. I believe the first album he cut with Alice was Jar of Flies. He still with them today. I believe for the Unplugged session he was using an Alvarez acoustic bass, strung with medium-gauge Dean Markley blue steel strings.
Nearly impossible to find today- everything is computer corrected now. The timing of all band members is just about perfect, there's a few screw ups during this performance ( mtv unplugged) but mostly moments that may never be recreated harmony wise. Not bad for metal/ grunge heavy tune guys going half tempo on acoustic instruments. So Good 👍
This performance alone showed just how much they loved Layne. If you pay close attention how much they look at each other and smile behind laynes back during this whole show you can tell Layne literally blew away his own damn band being high as fuck and still being able to make his band think holy fuck we have the best singer in our band as well as making the crowd love him and make them cry as well as touch on every goddamn emotion possible. Layne was truly magical. And i miss that dude more than ever.
@@Dravenbelmont just because of this unplugged set I’m obsessed with it. I listen to the whole thing every day ever since I first heard it and it’s been a few weeks now I’m a little late I’m listening to it but oh my God certain songs I’ll play over and over cause I absolutely love them in the bass and the drums. Oh my goodnessstellar stellar performance of everybody
Sometimes I forget that Layne Staley was an actual living breathing human being, He died before I was aware of his existence cause I was too young, and I suppose he was always like some sort of a story character to me, or a person someone wrote about in their poems. Distant. And then sometimes, I watch a video like this or an interview and I somehow just end up being shocked, as if I'm not aware of how human he was before I see a proof of it. For example, When he said "Fuck" and "What's my motivation here?", he suddenly shook me out of my imaginery that this is a movie character. It makes me even more sad. Anyways, great performance. My favourite song from them, always makes me cry.
I remember when they were all over mtv and on the radio constantly...he was absolutely amazing....I remember when he died...I was 16...it was shocking but also a forgone conclusion...it had been rumored for years he was well on his way to dying
That just tends to happen when people pass away, There’s a feeling of never existing/ never been in your life almost dream like. It happens even if you were close to the person.
You can tell the toll the drugs had on Layne at this show (based on his body language and overall "beaten" demeanor); really sad, but extremely impressive he was still able to hit all of the notes with perfection. For anyone experimenting with drugs, use Layne's story as a cautionary tale, not as a blueprint for your own demise.
ExpensiveSwan that’s Layne telling the messed up music industry, he controls the time the albums come out ... “by the way .. by the way” and that eyebrow raise shows him saying fu to the labels
Somehow seeing Layne putting his head in his hands at 0:51 made me even sadder than listening to some of his more depressing songs. It makes him so fragile and human. I wish his life didn't have to end in that horrible way.
Same here. Today I've found his sister Jamie Elmer on FB and she's doing just fine as a yoga instructor and I wish Layne could have swapped "H" for some yoga classes, dammit.
@dormie basne I would have to agree with Shark The Bread here. At least Layne didn't feel any pain when he was passing on. My brother in law shot himself with cocaine and died of a heart attack at 32, which for me, seems like a horrific way to die.
Thats what legends do.burn way to bright to fast.live to fast rock star life style.im still happy theres one band left still kicking in it and thats tool.i cant see tool ever doing an unplugged.there way to complex of songs.and tool dont have these kind of songs they jam for 15 mins sometimes they take you on a dark phycadelic journey and im so glad we got one more album if your a 9os grunge fan who loved this new sound that came out im sure you know.but just like nirvans unplugged they also did this mesh of folk hard rock blues kinda sound.wich is unbelievable when you hear there records.there played in such a diffrent way.i dont think maynards voice could work toned down and honestly live he really cant pull some of his songs off like the records.they must be so hard to play live.most complex unique bands.but this is something we will never see again.music has basically took a giant shit.even underground scene sucks now.
And that growl, emerging from such a frail and fragile body. That voice, resonating such pain reaches into the listener and touches the soul. Rest in peace Layne.
It's a he'll of a drug only the best can be the worst feeling also fuckin shitty universe and it's balance issues. I believe layne lived a great life he prolly should rode more dirt bikes and offroading more but aside from that he lived the perfect life.
No buddy, his life was far from perfect since the moment he decided to take his first shot. Struggling half of his life with addiction, making insane music till his late twenties, wasting the last 6 years of his life doing drugs, griefing his ex fiancee and pushing away everyone around him, dying miserable and alone. The fact that it took 2 weeks to find out that he passed away says a lot. Tragic demise to a beautiful soul. We are gonna love him forever@@hickstylez
As someone who's always been aware of AIC but never bothered to listen to much of their discography, I am so shook. Layne's voice is amazing. Rest his soul.
dude that's exactly where i am. growing up ALL i heard my father talk about was words like "jar of flies" "jerry cantrell" "alice in chains" and of course loved the songs down in a hole and them bones and rooster but for some reason i dove into nirvanas unplugged about a month ago, then branched to this... and i've been hyperfixated on AIC ever since like i cannot quit... every single day i have to play about 1 album entirely and it just does something to my soul. i've transcribed lyrics to over 12 songs and have been in touch with my father since and we're just reminiscing and appreciating the good ol times all through this beautiful band
Idk if u know about an Argentinean band called Soda Stereo. Their unplugged is wonderful too! If you are ok listening to Spanish Rock, you will like it without a doubt.
Attila Tömösvári Same here. I used to love MTV Brazil, but I just can't watch it anymore. Besides the thousands of realities, artists of today don't draw my attention.
Tripod distorted and toyed with Laynes voice so the live versions of those songs sound so much better. The album version of Sludge Factory cant touch this.
Bro straight up I grew up on rap. I’m now 24 and AIC is my favorite, I listened to the unplugged all the time and regular videos, but the unplugged is just godly
This song is in part about his disdain for record industry executives and from what I've read they were in the audience. So I have to wonder if that was a cheeky little FU to them 😊
"What's my motivation here?!". Cracks me up every time. His head in his hands at his mistake is adorable.. like a little boy. 19 years and 1 week since his passing and it's still heartbreaking.. especially when watching him
@dormie basne ohh..got it,I read that they had problems in their relationship, but Jerry always seemed to support Lane at concerts, so it was so strange to read that he wished him death.. thanks for detailed answer btw
Mrs.Saralyn Gibson this is how I feel. His friends abandoned him. When they did their last recording after they broke up, layne finally showed up and when they seen him he was barely 100lbs. I understand the whole band was addicted to something but they used him for his vocals. They could have done more. They seen what state he was him. He was left to rot in that apartment. Layne died cold and alone. They should have been there for him. Like layne was for them in the beginning.
My neighbor for 6 months Layne was still remember hearing him singing with that powerful smooth jazzy tone with the "yeah-yerr' thinking how unbelievable he wasn't famous in 1987. Sweetheart and innate gentleman helping my mom bring groceries in and saying hello playing with our St Bernard "Tinydog". He was just genuinely nice and loved to jam. Miss you dude
layne was someone who really valued qualities such as kindness towards otters, proper lad, he definitely had an otter hidden in his apartment somewhere which he kept as a pet.
He was broke and his mother was having to put money in his account to make sure he could get his dope so he wouldn't get sick... then he was found on his couch from a od and had been dead 2 weeks
Dead right todays music is utter bullshit no talent all editing with a pc any1 can sound good. Listen to most off them live is horrible.... this is pure talent ull never get this again its just sad
I only discovered Aice in Chains recently (and I'm 60 years old) and wish I'd paid more attention in the 90s. What an amazing voice Layne Staley had, and the vocal harmonies with Jerry Cantrell remind me of CSN (If anyone on this forum is old enough to remember them). What a tragedy that Layne was gone so young. I have addiction/substance abuse in my family and my heart goes out to his.
I was born right when they were blowing up and remember hearing their name being said on the radio all the time but didn't remember any of their songs. recently rediscovered their music and cant stop listening
I feel the exact same way. I never listened to their music until under a month ago. Im 46 and I can't help but wonder " what the he'll was I doing in the 90's if I wasn't listening to AIC?? Seriously...his story and this performance is heartbreaking. I started watching his videos, watch a couple of documentaries, listened to the lyrics. Then, I watch this performance😢. More than anything, his spirit was gone. This had to be so heartbreaking for the band to helplessly watch. If this story doesn't touch your heart then you're not human. Nobody chooses this to happen. It all boils down to sadness, defeat, trauma, loneliness and anything else that sometimes is just too hard to deal with for 5:48 some reason or another. Internally, it's pure agony. Addiction sux😢
One of most underrated bands of all time. People talk about the grunge era, and so many overlook AIC. To me, they are the epitome of grunge. Their sound defined the era. Nobody, and i mean nobody had Layne's unique vocal range and sound. I believe it was Mike McCready that talked about how you could literally feel Layne's voice resonating outside his body, on stage. It was that powerful. He and Jerry harmonizing was pure ecstasy as well. And the sad thing is so many thought their lyrics were just a nod to junkies and that "lifestyle" as if people set out to become junkies in the first place. The genius of their lyrics was that it was, if anything, the best anti drug campaign you could ever put together if you chose to actually LISTEN and read between the lines. They all said, many times, they didn't want people to do crack and shoot heroin because they wrote about it. The most surreal aspect to their music is it really summed up Layne's struggles. It's like a road map to his entire adult life, all the way up to his death. The personal connection to the notes is striking. So often the brightest stars are the most conflicted. They often face demons that the public either doesn't see or ignores because of stigma. Rock stars like Kurt and Layne to a lesser degree (national level) were, in a way, looked at as Gods. And God(s) are written as flawless.
I agree. Dirt is an anti drug anthem. Some people listen to it different ways maybe. Like they romantize the lifestyle when the whole time they were screaming against it. Either way you look at it it's one of the best records ever made and in my top 5 for sure.
Honestly that mistake was a blessing in disguise cause he was sounding kind of faded in the beginning. On the second go around he sang with more energy for real.
You insult me in my home You're forgiven this time Things go well, your eyes dilate You shake, and I'm high Look in my eyes deep and watch The clouds change with time 20 hours won't print My picture milk carton size Carton size, carton size, carton size Call me up congratulations Ain't the real why There's no pressure besides brilliance Let's say by day 9 And this corporate ignorance lets Me control time By the way, by the way, by the way, by the way Once again you see an in Discolored skin gives you away So afraid you kindly gurgle out a date For me Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah Now the body of one soul I adore Wants to die You have always told me you'd Not live past 25 I say stay long enough to repay All who caused strife Once again you see an in Discolored skin gives you away So afraid you kindly gurgle out a date For me Once again you see an in Discolored skin gives you away So afraid you kindly gurgle out a date For me Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah I bear true and an existing witness to this barrel of monkeys A self proclaimed immoral success Perfected by each whereof Individually deadly and equally so And spread about the surrendered troops For even thousands of miles will not tear apart their communication Or the lack there of Vultures, liars, thieves, each proclaim their innocence In no suggestion or rhyme, your weapon is contained in The wreckin' of the keeping the desired effect The breakin' of the spirit thwarts the whole being Your weapon is guilt Your weapon is guilt Your weapon is guilt Guilt
Wow...these are the lyrics? Amazing. Now i dont have to look them up (which i had planned to do next). Thx for taking the time to do that- Much appreciated!❤
Ah, the Sludge Factory screw up. One of the great qualities of Alice in Chains. It just goes to show that even brilliant artists like these guys can even screw up. Although it was a screw up, for me it was another reason to love Alice in Chains even more.
Bigsid320 apparently they cut out 5 other takes of Sludge Factory where Layne screwed up. The “fuck” was because of his sixth frustrated screw up, but I guess they decided to keep this one in
Angel Del Prado I see. Well, I do love Layne’s voice, but he was nodding off on smack. I guess one is bound to make mistakes under those circumstances.
I love how Layne after did the mistake, he straight looked at Jerry, that was so cute, and then Jerry like: "it's okay, buddy" aww love their musical friendship
And yet somehow Rolling Stone couldn't bother to include him in the Top 100 singers this year. He's easily Top Ten. Absolutely #1 of the grunge era. Man...fuck Rolling Stone. They fell off.
that happens , i missed Alice in Chains in the 90`s , didn`t really bother with them , everyone just loved Nirvana............ then it happened about 2 years ago for me , i`m 50 years old and discovered one of the best bands of all time
Welcome to the club. Listened to these guys for the first time in late 2019 when i saw the band name in some artists' influences and started searching everything about them, definitely obsessed with them and i've enjoyed every single moment of listening to their songs. Love them all for real
A beautiful but tragic life. As a now sober person of 19 years this moves me so much. Every time. . Tears. Knowing the “what could have been”. Just think if he’d found sobriety and kept going. Tears.
This is true, honestly very true. The vocal runs he’s doing are very odd [in a great way!] and very difficult. It’s like he’s making complex chords using the guitar chord as the root and then his voice adds all the exotic notes that aren’t even within that original chord. NOT typical rock roll vocals at all.
Oh...that shitty smirk (as to say I know something you don't! He's an endearing Man. Rest easy Piano Layne. Dudes also a piano.Octaves upon octaves. Will hear him till I die.
@Donovan Hall I don't consider myself "pretty" so thanks by the way. But Any kind of Woman could like this type of Music. Rock & Roll (Rock in general), it doesn't have any stereotype. It goes from the wrongfully called "ugly" Janis Joplin to the "Queen, Goddess" Joan Jett, etc etc. You know?.
@@guirxsa Yeah, I fucking hate growing up around the people I do. Todays music is just like chewing gum, writing and pulling shit out of your ass. Proud of what I like
The opening… holy f-Ing Moses - Layne’s voice is so insanely beautiful & unique. “What’s my motivation here?” The very first time I heard his voice I almost couldn’t grasp the effect it had on me - there are so brilliant singers, and Layne is one of them, but there’s something so unique about his voice that for me, just sets him apart. It’s just preternaturally gorgeous - just that amazing lyrical growl, & he has such control over it. Just no way to describe it.
So very recently, I stumbled on the official video of Would? I had goosebumps and chills thinking, "Who the hell is this?!?!?!" It was that raw power. I must have ran that 20 times and couldn't get the song out of my head. Then I started reading and listening. I am now a fan forever.
@@janebetridge2283 He gave Layne another chance (even after the mistakes Layne made during this song that were not released), and he followed Layne's lead in making light of the situation. I realize that often "behind-the-scences" Jerry could be judgmental, seemingly jealous, and controlling regarding Layne. I realize that Layne was hurt a lot by times when Jerry would criticize Layne and put too much pressure on Layne. My comment was specific to this specific coverage.
@@carolineroggenbuck9381 yeah but they were still like brothers you know bandmates and they known each other for a long time, probably frustration gets in you know 🤷
"Whatever dramas are going on in my life, I always find that place inside my head where I see myself as the cleanest, tallest, strongest, wisest person that I can be." ~ Layne Staley....I remember you for your talent Layne. Anybody else? 2020...Your still my motivation
I find the whole fuckup such a beautiful moment of this concert. The subtle hints of drama fits with the theme of the music. It's the blemish that completes the beauty of the whole thing.
YEP I AGREE ANYWAYS ARE YOU SAVED STEVEN BAKER? HAVE YOU ACCEPT JESUS AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR AND RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE I COULDN'T IMAGINE HEAVEN WITHOUT YOU
When I first saw Layne nodding off man he looked like he was very sleepy and falling asleep 😴💤😴💤😴💤 even though he trying so hard to stay awake aww bless his heart ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ he was truly a legend rest easy Layne I love you so much 😍😘🥰and thank you so much for your awesome music 🎵🎶🤘🎸
Layne has saved me from suicide atleast a hundred times. I live on because of him and he lives on within my soul. RIP Layne. Named my best friend (my dog) after Layne
Just hold onto something and then something else, until you do not need to hold on anymore. Please ask for help, it is out there. I know this feeling well. I have held onto different things at different times, and kept going. I wish you well.
I am not trying to be sarcastic here, I promise, but how did Layne, a guy who was a very depressed, extreme drug addict, who basically committed suicide himself with an over dose, save you from suicide? That is like saying Jeffery Dahmer saved me from Cannibalism.
@@Michael-jw6et really? I mean what the hell are you doing here listening his songs?, and how can you compare LAYNE with Jeffrey Dahmer... sorry but are you insane or something?
Trent Lancaster My goodness. People sure are touchy these days. Do you want me to get you a Kleenex? And BTW, while you are crying, you might give some more thought to what my question was stating: it just seems to me that someone who beat depression and suicide would be a better inspiration than someone that succumb to it. That’s all I was saying. There was no need to get your little girl undies in a wad.

Layne, DEEEEEEEP in his heroin hell, delivers a masterpiece. The man was a warrior and deserves our love and respect. AIC forever.

@@richthomas7080 that’s a good point.
It happens." The way Jerry Cantrell would back up Layne through EVERYTHING - every interview, every 'mess up', every tabloid exploitation.

Yes he did!!!!!
This is what friends are for. Jerry was such a gentleman and a great band mate.
@George Bachman wasn't kansas their last show
Layne sounds ace here
The actually messed thisnup six times, according to Jerry. The other ones did get edited out, lol.
The fact that Layne could even pull this a second time even while on heavy narcotics makes it even more legendary.
I thought I could listen w/o crying, then I read this 😢
Man, that's heavy.
God bless.

his ongoing condition made pulling this set off infinitely more difficult than it could've/should've been and no doubt he'd been screwing up along the way, when he was there to screw up at all. he'd likely been having to fend off doubts and concerned MTV/record label people with reassurances of some kind and he must've felt all of their pissed off, judgemental eyes burning a hole through him at that moment.
but also, I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about.
There was nothing to forgive . At his worst he was still exquisite.
Jerry's kindness is so real and sweet, and it looks like a kind of complicated song lyrically. This is a band who has each other's backs.
Jerry is the man. He seemed like the calming voice.
They mic’d this whole show really well it sounds amazing through my bose headphones.
So Jerry Cantrell replied to your comment as well I see... 👍
So Good 👍
Nice
This performance alone showed just how much they loved Layne. If you pay close attention how much they look at each other and smile behind laynes back during this whole show you can tell Layne literally blew away his own damn band being high as fuck and still being able to make his band think holy fuck we have the best singer in our band as well as making the crowd love him and make them cry as well as touch on every goddamn emotion possible.
I feel the exact same way 😏😥
I remember when they were all over mtv and on the radio constantly...he was absolutely amazing....I remember when he died...I was 16...it was shocking but also a forgone conclusion...it had been rumored for years he was well on his way to dying

You can tell the toll the drugs had on Layne at this show (based on his body language and overall "beaten" demeanor); really sad, but extremely impressive he was still able to hit all of the notes with perfection. This is one of those bands that makes you wanna download both the studio and live versions of their songs.
Also one of those rare bands that somehow manage to sound better live.
@@nonameman7114I swear ain't that the truth
Tripod distorted and toyed with Laynes voice so the live versions of those songs sound so much better. The album version of Sludge Factory cant touch this.
Bro straight up I grew up on rap. I’m now 24 and AIC is my favorite, I listened to the unplugged all the time and regular videos, but the unplugged is just godly
Exactly, they're THAT good
Dont know why, but that little eyebrow raise at the second “by the way” (3:02) makes me smile every time.
Me too! I’ve watched so many of their performances and his eyebrow arch’s get me every single time. Freaking love him!
yes me too I love that part he is mesmerizing
What raise? I don't see it
Same! 😊
This song is in part about his disdain for record industry executives and from what I've read they were in the audience. So I have to wonder if that was a cheeky little FU to them 😊
"What's my motivation here?!". Cracks me up every time. His head in his hands at his mistake is adorable.. like a little boy. 19 years and 1 week since his passing and it's still heartbreaking.. especially when watching him
Hope you're ok. Seems like you were having a seizure while typing....both times
I was three months old when Layne passed and I’ll be 20 soon…
@@nelliesilvers1210 It's clearly Layne's vocals
For sure a huge loss with to the music world. The H just took too much of a hold on him.

This song changed my life. This and down in a hole and angry chair all in a row, vocal trance therapy back in 2007. God was awakened to these...
“What’s my motivation here”
My words every day upon waking 😏
why is that so rockstar? i love it
That was said in reply to a crowd member yelling "stop fucking this up" apparently this song took several takes as Layne kept fucking the lyrics up 🤣🤣
apparently it was James Hetfield who had said that to tease Layne. but my source may be wrong. not sure.
I'm not a native speaker. Would someone explain what this sentence meaning please? Is it a kind of joking or sarkasm?
You can clearly see how Jerry looks at Layne its "OK" he loves Layne what else can I say.............................
sean b Jerry was so supportive of Layne. Really encouraging his guitar playing and songwriting. He loved his brother in arms. My heart breaks for him.
@Elena Mae what? who?
@dormie basne ohh..got it,I read that they had problems in their relationship, but Jerry always seemed to support Lane at concerts, so it was so strange to read that he wished him death.. thanks for detailed answer btw
He dont love layne he replaced him ok. Dont even go there fr
Wait...you knew Layne???
Jaye come back.... we have questions
layne was someone who really valued qualities such as kindness towards otters, proper lad, he definitely had an otter hidden in his apartment somewhere which he kept as a pet.
@@krazykdon up
Ill never get sick of their unplugged. It’s the best ever imo
In spite of Layne being physically frail here, his voice and wit are still right on point. Unbelievably great performance!
Chris Contra he hit all the notes with ease! Soooo dope
@@williamp7278 he's high in this video that's why he comes out with sunglasses on watch his eyes
"physically frail" Man, imagine if it was at it's top shape! I'd give my left nut to have this "damaged" voice!
He was broke and his mother was having to put money in his account to make sure he could get his dope so he wouldn't get sick... then he was found on his couch from a od and had been dead 2 weeks

Frogs, Down In A Hole and Nutshell too
Absolutely correct!
@@richthomas7080 Nutshell for sure. Both versions of Down in a Hole are so amazing they should each be considered 👍🏻
Absolutely. A lot of there shit was even better live, and sometimes sounded completely different, but in a fucking great way!
This song isn't quite the same without the gritty electric guitar, but still amazing especially the vocals
25 years later, Layne's screw-up's are better than anything put out these days.
Sad.
Fuckin right!! I thought he sounded great in the beginning. Musicians are always their own worst critic
Dead right todays music is utter bullshit no talent all editing with a pc any1 can sound good. Listen to most off them live is horrible.... this is pure talent ull never get this again its just sad

@@Crazyfool12 It wasn’t because he didn’t sound good. He stopped because he messed up the lyric.
FUCK!!! lol
Better late than never 🤘
I’m not that old, but I still love CSN and Y!
I am right there with you but 67. I knew of them but never listened and now am obsessed with Layne's voice and their sound. Truly special.
And God(s) are written as flawless.
i dont really think they r underrated tho. they get plenty of respect.
@@jeffbuckley4453 in comparison to bands like nirvana, metallica and guns n roses they deserved much more attention...
I agree. Just because a band is famous doesn't mean they cant be underrated.
I agree. Dirt is an anti drug anthem. Some people listen to it different ways maybe. Like they romantize the lifestyle when the whole time they were screaming against it. Either way you look at it it's one of the best records ever made and in my top 5 for sure.
So true... more than any other band..... they were grunge! The absolute definition of grunge..... every song they had reminded you of that era....
Honestly that mistake was a blessing in disguise cause he was sounding kind of faded in the beginning. On the second go around he sang with more energy for real.
You insult me in my home
You're forgiven this time
Things go well, your eyes dilate
You shake, and I'm high
Look in my eyes deep and watch
The clouds change with time
20 hours won't print

Carton size, carton size, carton size
Call me up congratulations
Ain't the real why
There's no pressure besides brilliance
Let's say by day 9
And this corporate ignorance lets
Me control time
By the way, by the way, by the way, by the way
Once again you see an in
Discolored skin gives you away
So afraid you kindly gurgle out a date
For me
Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah
Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah
Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah
Now the body of one soul I adore
Wants to die
You have always told me you'd
Not live past 25
I say stay long enough to repay
All who caused strife
Once again you see an in
Discolored skin gives you away
So afraid you kindly gurgle out a date

So afraid you kindly gurgle out a date
For me
Owe owe owe owe, oh yeah

I bear true and an existing witness to this barrel of monkeys
A self proclaimed immoral success
Perfected by each whereof Individually deadly and equally so
And spread about the surrendered troops
For even thousands of miles will not tear apart their communication
Or the lack there of
Vultures, liars, thieves, each proclaim their innocence
In no suggestion or rhyme, your weapon is contained in
The wreckin' of the keeping the desired effect
The breakin' of the spirit thwarts the whole being
Your weapon is guilt
Your weapon is guilt
Your weapon is guilt

Yeah, sad
godly vocalist.. so sad he's gone
What he is doing with his voice in relation to the guitar chords is unbelievable...not only extremely difficult, but genius.
@@Name-el9ps i cant grasp how he can sing so insanely good in his state here. Like it is nothing, to reach all those high notes. HOW?

The very first time I heard his voice I almost couldn’t grasp the effect it had on me - there are so brilliant singers, and Layne is one of them, but there’s something so unique about his voice that for me, just sets him apart. It’s just preternaturally gorgeous - just that amazing lyrical growl, & he has such control over it.

@@janebetridge2283 He gave Layne another chance (even after the mistakes Layne made during this song that were not released), and he followed Layne's lead in making light of the situation.
