I used your idea on the drain but I used a 1/2 pvc drilling small holes to allow water to enter and bottom side of pvc I drilled and screwed in 2 brass nipples attached small tubing for drain it worked perfectly I would’ve never even thought about this if I had not seen you video also I cut the old style dock styrofoam to put in each void very happy with the finished work
I REALLY enjoy your videos! You are very transparent and that is the primary reason I like watching your videos. The other thing I like is you are like my high school shop teacher! I have learned so much from your videos. I am getting as much knowledge as I can BEFORE I tear into a boat project I inherited that is presently sitting in the driveway. Thanks for sharing all your hard work and the knowledge you have accumulated in the process of fixing/repairing and updating your boat projects. I hope your mom is doing better.
Man ur awesome I just got a 85 bayliner and my wife and I are going to tare it down and build it back up u gave me the courage to do it and I'm sorry to here about ur mom I had AML it's cancer of the blood when I was 4 so that would have been 1994 but ur videos are very inspiring thank you
Jumpin Jehosaphat, you poor soul, you've got my prayers now, such a challenge, this thing called life, hang in there, pretty boat, I saw you pulling it home, glad you know what your doing
hi watched all of your videos and have found very valuable information about replacing a boat deck ! I have a 17 foot wilson flyer which was rotten when me and my dad bought it , sadly I lost my dad 3 years ago but now it is time to get it done ! when I'm not sure about anything I just check one of your videos out ! many thanks and regards
Very nice. I restored a 30 ft Chaparral Villain with twins. took me 4 years, had to do the same thing. New transom, stringers etc. I spent a lot of time with the guys at west systems epoxies for the job. Know what you went through brother. nice job.
You did a great job in this series. Thanks so much for sharing. I just started my boat project and you have given me some great ideas on how to do it right!
Great video, brings back memories when I built a boat (Glen-L Thunderbolt with Merc V8) 20 years ago. I think the big problem with these commercial boats rotting out is the false floor. My boat was open, the seats and stuff was mounted directly to the stringers and the floor was actually the bottom of the boat. I know this wouldn't fly on a commercial boat but that false bottom prevents things from drying out causing or greatly speeding up rot. And of course without a false bottom it's much easier to monitor and repair. Gotta be honest I think a rebuild like this is probably just as much work as building from scratch. 10 gallons of resin seems like a LOT. Cheers
I foamed my boat and used a long length of 5/8s heater hose WELL greased to form a drainage channel. You just have to be able to pull it out somewhere once the foam sets. It worked pretty well!
Hope she get better soon . I miss my folks big time . Sorry that all happen to you man . Boat I hope guy help you on cost . I just bought sea ray boat I hope its fine 1997 . Walk round on floor more . I thought all fiberglass . You know what you doing .
My Prayers to Your Mom. May God Bless and give her strength to fight this. Amen.Prayers to her Husband and Family. I know its hard part of life to deal with. God Bless Amen.
You can put resin on bottom side (haul) and on vertical (stringer) and just glue fiberglass strip. Kinda making a fiberglass hammock. The middle part of fiberglass must be free of resin. It will be like a "fiberglass filter". When you put foam later foam will be stopped by fiberglass mesh. The corner will be empty and if water ever gets in foam it will drain through fiberglass and after to weeping hole. You can create a "web" from this "hammocks". Also fiberglass will not rot like cardboard.
You're a better man than me (and yes I know I'm responding to a post from 8 years ago). I'd take it to the Marina and tell them to fix it right and call me when it's done. Everything I try to fix turns into an ashtray.
Amazing JOB YOUR DOING ON THE REPAIR, last video I saw was you were finding wet foam guess when you took it apart the whole dam thing needed repair, Your learning a lot about fiberglass repair. Do you want to make the gas tank accessible? You probably know this already but I ,learned the hard way about not having a fuel/ water separator installed in my fuel line. Without that you can suck any crap right into the engine!
As far as your cardboard tube Idea in theory it's a good Idea, but paper rots! How about PVC pipe with holes wraped in a black membrane material covered in Expandi foam to prevent sanding water in the sub floor ?
It's Probably to late but the way I did it is after I put the deck on I drilled 3" holes over each cel put the boat bow down all the way sitting on the tongue and poured the foam through the holes and let it climb up and out the the holes I drilled work perfect
I bought a 1979 Sea Ray, I probably will have to do the same repair, but I choose to enjoy the boat for what it is and not get so depressed about it. You choose to tackle this expensive project on top of what you spent on the boat. I only buy off of ebay which has buyer protection. I only spent $1800 for the boat and plan on making it a $10,000 classic boat when its done. Sorry for your bad luck but "Buyer Beware"....did you have the boat inspected? ... Its 2018 hope you Mom is in a good place wherever she is now. Blessings.
did we ever Find Out; How the boat got saturated? Did it sink? Left out exposed in rain? would it be reasonable to just float it in the lake for a while to see if she is Taking on Water?
So I see this is done and has been done for some time but a better method for those drains would be a PVC pipe layed in there with holes in it. No way the foam would expand that much to fill the tube. Face the holes down and water will push into it if it gets any significant amount in it to drain as you’re going for. Otherwise I’m not sure I’d use the expanding foam in a boat since it’ll hold water against its edge and basically shove it against your fiberglass covered plywood.
I found that PL glue and polyester resin don't like each other. The PL will stay liquid and uncured when exposed to the resin. Best to not use PL at all in a fiberglass project.
@@FriscoBoatersGarage Somehow I watched all those videos and missed that. But I didn't have a time schedule to wait that long anyway. I made do with various peanut butter mixes instead. Between cabosil, q-cells, and milled glass fibers, I got it all done. 17' Sunbird with black mush decks. Now stronger than when new. After having a Sea Ray before this one, it was real obvious to see the quality Sea Ray puts in their boats compared to some of the brands OMC took over before they all came crashing down.
Sealed compartments work well too. The problem is from the factory they were not sealed.

Polyester is brittle, epoxy is flexible. Broken hulls are normal for us raceboaters. Epoxy resin is the only way to repair fiberglass on boats or Corvettes. Tons of experience doing both taught me to use epoxy, period. Work it down before it totally cures while still soft, or else!
Say my name ls les and I bought a 4 winns last year and I was told that it doesn't leak but I found out that it does leak water at the transom and it is bad so that being said the person that I bought the boat from won't stand my it I paid 6000 for this 93 inbord has 5.0 corba out drive so going to try to fix it myself so we're should I start let me know thanks and l love your videos I appreciate them
Ok, I know i'm slow. But how in the heck can water get down in there if you fiberglass and gel the deck? Do you have to leave the channels for water drainage if the deck is sealed tight to keep water out? How does water get in there? Please explain. I just re-decked and foamed my bonito and did NOT leave those channels! Have I royally screwed it up?
Maybe this is a really stupid thought, since I have never done this before.... but... how would it work to use 1/4 in pvc pipe with multiple holes drilled in it and run it parallel to the stringers down to the drain holes (rather than cardboard tubes or balloons). Would that work or would it only be allowing a backflow of water into the other compartments and foam?
Mate first of all sorry to hear about your mother. I’m not a family member so I really don’t need to know your mother’s personal problems I do sympathies with her but that’s not why I started to follow this thread. I have a couple of generations of boat builders in my family and have never heard of using flour but if that’s your choice you’re keeping it interesting as for marine grade sealants sika is a very reputable company that has sales reps that can talk you thru just about any application. You said about containers my brother uses plastic ice cream containers you can buy them in bulk and there inexpensive. From the pictures you’re posting it looks like you are doing a good job and have all the gear a good 3m dust mask is a must for fibre glass work, and some white zip up hooded throwaway coveralls stops skin irritations, so head Dow look forward to hearing more about your boat saga.
Adding flour to resin is creating a biodegradable compound with an unknown point of degradation. Thats what is done to the plastic in grocery sacks which biodegrade in the environment. Plus the wheat grains have no strength and will tend to reduce the expected strength of the epoxy resin.

Great job! I am redoing the floor in my Sea-ray and I chose to use 3/8 polyethylene sheets. my floor will NEVER rot again!
Way to go with preventative maintenance :)
Looks like you're doing a great job.
Some nice work going on there. At least the Boat will now be worth top Dollar at resale.
You're a better man than me (and yes I know I'm responding to a post from 8 years ago). I'd take it to the Marina and tell them to fix it right and call me when it's done. Everything I try to fix turns into an ashtray.

wow that is so good of a job. you could do that you could fix anything.great job
I really need to roll back through your vids and catch up. This is good stuff.

@uin211
Thanks man, and yes to both of those questions. I have another polaris vid coming up.
Really sorry about your mom bud, I've only watched one of your videos, but still will pray for her

"everybody just shut up" Haha I love that!
You can use preferated pvc pipe with a solid pipe inside of it and remove it after foam dried.
Doesn't the cardboard just plug up your weep holes when it rots?
God love ya man, and of course your Mom. Lost mine so I know what you’re going through. Religious or not, pray A lot. I wish you all good luck.
@persuaderboats Thanks. I have a block that has all the pictures and videos of the build in order. Just check out my latest video, as it has the link.
Nice work!!
I lay tile for a living we use alot of red gaurd we use it in showers and hospital bathroom floors I thought about useing it myself on boats
My prayers brother.
Sorry to hear about your mom. Hoping that she get better. I know how it feel to loose a parent.

Yes sir. I have a video some whereon the channel on how I made it.

Prayers for u mom sir love your videos did the seller have any comment on condition on boat
Would PVC work for your tubes ? makes for capping or threaded end parts or whatever you want
I wonder if instead of the cardboard tube to use the pink foam cut at an angle and glued in like you did the bulk head later.
Get some cardboard cylinders from the carpet store. Their in the center of the rolls of carpet. Their 10 to 12 feet long
Thanks for sharing.
WOW, LEGIT REPAIR!
did we ever Find Out; How the boat got saturated?
Did it sink?

would it be reasonable to just float it in the lake for a while to see if she is Taking on Water?

go to my main channel page and you will find a link to my website that has the whole build in order.
I am so sorry about you're Mom.
Do you have to put the foam back in the boat? First time restoring a boat.
I found that PL glue and polyester resin don't like each other. The PL will stay liquid and uncured when exposed to the resin. Best to not use PL at all in a fiberglass project.
You have to let the PL glue totally cure for 7 days. I mentioned this in several videos.

instead of flour you can use saw dust. Also you don't need to put that much in the transition area
Why don't you use 1 1/2 drainage PVC perforated ?? Light weight and can be cut to full length as needed
Sealed compartments work well too. The problem is from the factory they were not sealed.

Should use PVC and fiberglass it in place. It can get wet.
Why not use a PVC pipe for your weep holes ...card board could turn into mush .
Hooe all is well! Quick question, where did you purchase your fiberglass for the stringers?
Damn brother when it rains it pours hang in there
Do you put the fumed silica with the cabosil and the chopped strand for the PB?
Try diatomaceous earth !! Cheep and works as high density compound
Interesting

cut fiberglass cloth on a 45 degree bias. it will then conform to what ever you put it over.
Adding flour to resin is creating a biodegradable compound with an unknown point of degradation. Thats what is done to the plastic in grocery sacks which biodegrade in the environment. Plus the wheat grains have no strength and will tend to reduce the expected strength of the epoxy resin.
bee bop All it is used for is to thicken the resin not for strength. The fibers are for strength. Not sure where you got this information.
@FriscoJarretts Hope your Mum gets better, I haven had web access for three weeks. You´ve been busy!
cheers Will.
Why do they use wood in boats? why not some trex type stuff or plastic wood.
why not pressure treated ?
Could use pvc pipe and cut it in half instead of card board

Lololololol
Hey, seripus question. Why do ypu put foam in the hull spaces?
Bailey DenBak you don’t want the wood in direct contact with the hull. You fill it with thickens resin and then glass it.
FriscoBoater's Garage why dont you want it in direct contact?
It caused stresses on the hull, or "hard spots" The thickened resin acts like a cushion between the two.
Sorry missed the question. It is floatation in case the boat gets swamped. It is required by the us coast guard.
Use wrapping paper tubes.
I know this video is a couple of years old, but I hope your mom is doing better.
