Jody that's because the new ones are built like 💩. They are designed to fail sooner so you'll be more inclined to buy a new washer. The older ones predate that "disposable" mindset of today and were made to last a lifetime.
I don’t remember the old washers ever smelling like mold and needing to be cleaned with a bleach cycle. Now we run a bleach cycle every few weeks, and I just learned on RUclips that I’m supposed to wipe and dry the creases located around the machines door. Next washing machine I get will be a top loading “collectible”.
These guys are my soul-mates. Growing up, we had a 1962 German Constructa fully automatic front loader. I used to pull a stool it front of it when I was little, and I would watch it for hours. I also remember throwing a fit at the department store, not because I wanted a toy, but because I wanted one of the washing machines.
I'm obsessed with laundry too. I can't afford those big machines so I started collecting small portable washing machines. There's such bliss watching the machine take out dirt and moving back and forth. Maybe it's because we love the sound of soothing water and the comfort of clean soft clothes. ❤️
I'm here because I just had a crazy dream that I met a washing machine collector, who led me to his collection. It was a vast field of washing machines, and maybe even some dryers, sometimes stacked two high, an uninhabited city of washing machines, as far as the eye could see. He told me he'd go to laundromats when they were closing or changing machinery to get as many as he could at the best price. Some worked, some didn't. I did some laundry in the open air. Then I came here to see if there were actually washing machine collectors, and here it is. These guys take better care of theirs than the guy in my dream though. He was trying to reintroduce them to the wild or something.
This is wonderful! I loved looking at the machine, and think I share at least some of their joy. These machines are things of beauty. And I love the collection of vintage detergents, too!
I'm in love with washing laundry too. I think it reminds us of the weekend and it's a time to slow your thoughts down. It really is enjoyable and I totally understand this obsession. I have about ten different detergents and love to test them out. Lol
I love machines like this. the time when machines were mechanical and not electronically operated like today's machines. the engineering that's gone into these machines is just genius.
I don't know what it is, but I'll stick in a screwdriver to defeat the safety switch and watch the machine go through it's entire cycle. I don't make a regular habit of this, but if I'm bored, I find it relaxing and mesmerizing. I have a c1989 Kenmore that was built by Whirlpool and I did some repairs on it several times and it's still going strong. Thanks for the video. I thought I was losing my mind!!
Me too! I love to learn about them, it's like learning about the history of people's every day lives before me. I consider it important and respectful to remember the quotidian aspects of the past.
I just recently bought my first washing machine. It hooks up to the kitchen sink and has two tubs; one to wash and one to spin dry. I was addicted to watching these types of machines on RUclips as I tried to determine which machine to buy. My washer is still my favorite toy and I love getting to be so hands on, customizing my wash cycle. I wish I had room to collect washers, I get “it”.
I love vintage machines and appliances. I’m so impressed by their collections! I would gladly pay good money on tickets for an interactive museum dedicated to washing machines. Collecting washing machines makes way more sense that collecting cards.
Growing up we had a 1956 Westinghouse laundromat... The famous one that slanted at a forty-five degree angle. I used to love to go downstairs in the basement and watch the thing go through the whole cycle. Although it's been decades, in my memory I can see and feel exactly what it was like to turn the thing on. Betty Furness used to do TV commercials for the machine and it always and she always ended saying"You can be sure if it's Westinghouse"
I remember the Bock centrifugal extractors from laundromats back in the 1960's. If a normal spin cycle did not dry your clothes sufficiently, these machines sure did the job!
They should do these wash ins helping other people that don't want to do laundry or need help with it. It would serve to help others while fulfilling their gratification of watching the machines run.
My grandparents had a vintage washer and dryer that were speed queen. And my uncle owned a washing machine that had a light built in as you powered it on. He still has his whirlpool dryer to this day and still works
So first I'd like to clarify those charcoal black machines with the control towers are actually GM Frigidaires. I have an odd collection myself of room air conditioners. There's about 20 of us that I know of. Everyone's like collecting different things this is no different than the guy who collects classic cars.
These good old machines will definitely outlast any modern washer, plus they were well built. I sure miss the old washers, they used to last 20+ years.
@@stephensnell1379 which ones are you referring to? top loaders or front loaders? No top load washer spins faster than a Frigidaire Unimatic, those were made from 1947 up until 1958.
Those old units were built to last. Mom had a GE washer/dryer set she bought in the mid 70's when she got her first real job out of school and I dont think they concked out until the mid 00's.
Maybe because guns just shoot. Nothing else. Unlike watching washing machines how they fill water, how they wash, rinse and spin your clothes.. It's amazing.
I think with more and more HE washers that just aren’t made the way used to make them, this club will grow. Hence the big following behind Speed Queen washers.
2:33 That's wrong. That's no blackstones... those are GM Frigidaire Unimatic Control Tower machines. Washer model number is WCI-57. Not sure of the dryer's model number. 2:57 The 1938 Bendix is one of the oldest automatic washing machines existing. Bendix made the first automatic washers ever beginning production in 1937 and some from that year and decade still survive.
There’s an old black dude who lives down the street from me who loves old washers, has a bunch of old ones on his back porch and in his garage. I wonder if he knows about the club, maybe I’ll show him the video next time I see him out.
Lets all have a "wash in" hoedown and watch the spin cycle through the window. Makes things like collecting/restoring pinball machines look completely average, except in their complexity.
This is really cool! I'd like to join their club or tour that basement collection. I wonder how high the utilities bills are when most of the machines are being used on a regular basis?
These dudes are legit enjoying the hell out of themselves.
I'm jealous.
Just go to a bathhouse it will be the same thing
Me too! I want an avocado green Maytag washer model 806. With a matching dryer.
I love seeing people happy together enjoying their interests
Welp, I certainly don't understand it but I'm glad they're enjoying their community.
same here lol
Think many of these guys are gay, and the obsession for washing machines started in childhood
People who are smart and refuse to fall for today’s modern high efficiency electronic junk.
@@Goldenwoodzthat and the satisfaction of watching the clothes turn over that you won’t find on low water wash machines
@@Goldenwoodz
Bingo.
What fascinates me is how they keep those vintage machines going when I can't keep a brand new one going more than a couple of years.
These old machines predate built-in obsolescence... there are very few makers now making stuff to really last.
The last good machines were made in the late 2000's. Toploaders with electromechanical timers and no computerization whatsoever.
Jody that's because the new ones are built like 💩. They are designed to fail sooner so you'll be more inclined to buy a new washer. The older ones predate that "disposable" mindset of today and were made to last a lifetime.

Idk, I think I'd rather these dudes do my laundry for me than give me a ride in a classic car.

I absolutely love washing machines they are my favourite thing in the world it is like Christmas morning when I put the washing machine on
This made me very, very happy
I bet their laundry smell amazing. The old machines use more water and get water out of the clothes most.
I've been thinking about this segment since it aired. cars and appliances both, from bygone eras, have so much (more) character and function.
