when they came through Memphis where i live, on the tour for their first album, they all hung out behind the club afterwards, and were really chill and fun to talk to . Later that night at like 3 AM, Serj showed up at our house party in a car with a cpl friends of mine (we were all in local bands, and worked at the club as stagehands and similar). He was a completely awesome nice guy. He hung out all night, and was just the coolest guy youd ever want to meet.

We were waiting on a late bus from the venue back to our side of town when the band came out the backdoor and we ended up hanging out with them for hours just chilling on the patio of the venue and talking about music we loved. really great guys.

Deer Dance is my favorite SOAD song, other than Aerials. SOAD’s music is often focused on politics. Deer Dance they reference the 2 incidents at the Staples Center; one protest where police used riot gear and one following a Rage Against the Machine concert where police used riot gear on concert goers.
Additionally, they reference “Deer Dance”, a practice of honoring deer before a hunt. “A deer dance, invitation to peace, war stating your the face”. I think that it is a juxtaposition between peaceful protest, and police response with violence.
    I love them.

I'm an ageing creaky old rocker and I'm so happy to be on this journey with you. Music is the universal language that can unite the world, nothing stands in its way. Geographical distance, time zones, anything. Enjoy, brother.
Many years ago when I was young, another old creaky ageing rocker said something to me that holds true in many other areas of music. He said "many people listen to Hendrix, only some hear...". Certain other bands are the same, System, Rage and so on. Keep on listening but more importantly, keep on hearing my friend.

Ever since then, when I watch the news and I hear talk about ongoing wars, politics, protests etc. System's music is always at the forefront of my mind, are we being told the truth, how is it being reported from the other side etc. It is amazing how their music is so relatable to what has gone on, what is going on and how history repeats itself if there continues to be no change.

I remember sitting alone in my room painting Warhammer 40k figures with this album on repeat. Toxicity and Chop Suey were some of the first 2 tracks I learned on drums. SOAD radicalized me without me realizing it. It's music I felt in my soul before I had the knowledge to fully appreciate both their lyrics and musicality. They led me to later read Zinn and Marx, and are probably the only reason I knew about the Armenian Genocide. SOAD is arguably one of the most important bands of the 20th/21st century.

So glad you've discovered SOAD! I had them on repeat back in the 2000s. I still listen to them every now and again too. They really haven't realeased a single bad song, but this one is one of my favourites. BYOB should be on your list next!

Even for a child of the 90s, rocking since birth, we were all equally surprised, amazed, and fascinated when they first came out. This band is testament to the unique sounds that were hitting the airwaves like every week back then. Then the recording industry stopped caring about art. They dumped their recording agents, and just focused on massmarketable acts that they could just milk for years. Listen to Tom Petty: The Last DJ and Joe. Those songs tell the story of our music industry flipping it's ass upside down. Oh and Money Becomes King. Three of the first 4 songs from the album The Last DJ.

System use so many different sounds and yet you can recognise there work instantly from the mix of sounds and rifts. Will always be my no1 band but I'm loving your journey though music I love, this is New Metal or it was in the 00's when it came out.

Such a great band, one of the few metal bands I can blast in the car and know my wife enjoys it as much as I do! Have you ever heard of the band Dance Gavin Dance? I don't see any reaction videos of them yet, I'm sure your patreons will toss some at you eventually, but I feel like most of the other SOAD fans I know are also pretty big fans of DGD. Could be worth a listen if you're curious. Quite a few good tracks from them: Midnight Crusade, We Own the Night, Headhunter, Strawberry's Wake, Inspire the Liars are some of my favs.

Knowing you you seem to like the history of things, this song is about the 1992 DNC Riots in LA. Rage Against the Machine was playing a concert near Staples Center, where Bill Clinton was about to be nominated for Pres. The city tried to prevent it, but was denied by the courts as a violation of free speech. So the city confined the concert to a small 3-sided area. Riot police made the fourth wall. By being there, it's beloved that thier presence lead to unnecessary escalation that resulted in the police using rubber bullets as crowd control. Rage Against the Machine has been known to tour with System of a Down.

“Beyond the Staples Center you can see America” is a reference to the 2000 protests of the DNC. A Rage Against The Machine protest concert was dispersed with rubber bullets, and the lavish event is held a stone’s throw away from impoverished neighborhoods of LA.
