Many people think that Germany’s biggest rivalry is between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. But that’s simply untrue, as The Revierderby - Borussia Dortmund vs Schalke - is easily the fiercest rivalry in Germany. We’ll look at the history of Borussia Dortmund, the history of Schalke 04, as well as why Dortmund and Schalke hate each other!

I'm a simple man, I see roots of the rivalry, I watch and upvote.
I just used to follow results etc when i was young.
If you want to do another Roots of the Rivalry you should look into De Klassieker, Ajax vs Feyenoord in the Netherlands. It was last weekend with Ajax beating Feyenoord 4-0. The rivalry between the two clubs is extremely intense, with supporters referring to eachother as 020 (Ajax) and 010 (Feyenoord) because they refuse to say each others names and cities (the numbers are the region codes for the phone numbers).
There have been numerous violent and terrible incidents which has caused De Klassieker to not have any away supporters since 2009. It has even went as far as incidents at the U19s game this year.
The differences between the two cities are clear on many levels. Ajax's stadium (the Johan Cruyff ArenA) tends to be more focussed on business class while Feyenoord's stadium (the Kuip) tends to be more simplistic (and tends to have a more intense ambiance) (although there are plans for a project called Feyenoord City, which is a whole other story).
Another interesting story of the rivalry is the story of late Johan Cruyff, club legend at Ajax, who made the switch to Feyenoord for his last footballing year after a conflict with an Ajax board member and actually became champions with Feyenoord the year after becoming the champions with Ajax.

Argh, I love the way you present your points in league matches and in rivalries! I have a suggestion on a couple of other rivalries from La Liga. Sevilla vs. Be’tis and Celta de Vigo vs. Deportivo la Coruña. They’re really fascinating and often ignored derbies outside of their respective regions.

Nice vid, but some facts and images are not correct in my view and i would like to share some more information with you.

1) 9:46 the Schalke stand is called the 'Nordkurve' not 'Nordtribüne'. The dortmund stand is called 'Südtribüne' or 'Gelbe Wand' (yellow wall).
2) 9:45 this is a pic showing the away fans of HSV (Hamburger SV) in the Schalke stadium away stand which is on the opposite side of the stadium in the south-east stand. This is not the 'Nordkurve' and not their fans. ;-)
3) 10:30 Correct, but I think there is an important information missing: Schalke (S04) was, as you mentioned, more or less the big brother of Dortmund (BVB). At this time, in the early 30's, two former Schalke players and icons Kuzorra and Thelen helped Dortmund by taking place on the BVB coaching bench and the club made the comeback to the first division (at this time the 1st league was called Gauliga). This is the actual beginning in my view when Borussia Dortmund became successful.
4) 11:15 I think this is actually the time most people started to call it a 'derby' or real 'rivalry'.
5) it is sad to mention, but to understand the big rivalry, it must be also said that there were really bad times in the late 70' and 80', when both clubs had big trouble, like actually most German and European clubs in that decades, with hooligans and violent clashes around the derby matches or actually during whole season. I think this decades also had a big impact to the rivalry and the dislike which is quite high between both fan scenes. Fortunately this has really improved over the last 20 years and there are only a few troublemakers left of this kind.
Nevertheless, todays derby days before and after the match, are the most important days for both clubs and their supporters.
And indeed, it is the biggest football match in Germany.

@@ichbins173 in case u ask Bayern Fans, yes. In case you ask Dortmund Fans, I think the most will answer the Derby is bigger and more important. In terms of marketing and quality of both teams, of course Bayern vs. Dortmund is currently the biggest match. But I meant big in terms of feelings, tradition and rivalry.

I'd make a point to say that the rivalry between SV Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV and thus the Nordderby matches the Revierderby, but then again, with the HSV playing second division in their second year now and both clubs struggling to come even close to their earlier glory for at least 10 years, it's really more pity that anything else now.

Being American I have always wondered about this. Why is the word Derby pronounced as Darby in Europe?. In the German language "er" sounds like the word "air". Even the letter "r" sounds like air when you say the German alphabet. So how did it be pronounced as Darby?

As a Dortmundfan I ''should'' hate Herne but I don't hate them, neither do I like them, I enjoy seeing them lose a game, but I respect their passion for their club. And I respect the protests against their own Chairman becaue of racist statements. They have a long history and were great for the working class fans back in the days, represented them as well as Dortmund did. When the last colliery was closed both teams faced each other in a friendly to honour the miners.
I hope the violent times are behind us, I don't want Derbys where families have the risk to get injured because of fireworks, just a great rivalry decided on the pitch and supported from the stands.

The most people of our area are workers. Our hate against the other club is we same same 😉. The Black yellow love is same our blue and white love. The home of german football is the ruhrvalley.
