There’s no longevity in creating because of social media likes and attention. Imagine the amount of artists we love today that would disappear because they gave up early in their career for the reason of people not giving their work attention. Artists create and put it out into the world, whatever happens after that is irrelevant. We move on into the next creation.

I don't think social media has ruined photography but I do believe it has caused people to consider getting a pic that will get the most likes over preserving an area. Bad actors destroy places by walking over delicate landscapes, they leave trash places, there are even rumors of places being deliberately destroying places so no one else can take the picture. Then again, most of these people only care about clout, not photography

Absolutely believe this. Never trespassed or trashed a place myself but I’ve heard many a story, and there’s an area not far from where I live that was closed down due to too many tourists ruining the area due to trying to get the cool shot for social media (Cheltenham Badlands, up in Ontario, Canada). Even have a friend who has a sunflower field that was totally destroyed by those kinds or people.

I like what you said here. For many years I thought I didn't have the right equipment, but when I bought those equipments they did the same thing like the others. I stopped buying equipment. I am taking a different approach now. Another misconception also was that people claimed that I couldn't sell my work. My work is out there. I found a way to place my work for sale. People have been discouraging me for years, but the only one stopping me is if I choose to stop. I stopped listening to those that said that I wasn't going to make it. You got to follow your dreams, because no one believes in them. Thank you for your message. Things look similar out there, but nobody knows your work until they see it. We all have different styles.

If anything, influencers like yourself and Adrien Sanguinetti have really helped me fall back into photography. I'm really having fun pushing myself creatively and treating photography as a visual diary medium. it's really that mindset switch that's been the most fulfilling.

I’ll say I saw one video from one photographer that talked about this, and I tend to agree with his assertions, because that’s totally what happened to me.
I got caught up in the “I should shoot something that looks like this”, cuz that’s where my brain was at a while back; the desire to have people like my work, because that is exactly what social media is currently designed to make you feel. It is DESIGNED for you to go for those likes, especially for those with neurodivergent tendencies like me (ADHD) whose brains don’t work right for the dopamine, and these likes give that dopamine hit, and create a vicious cycle.
I’ve managed to break out of that this year after a whole bunch of mental shit, and now just shoot for myself and I’ve never loved photography more.

    My two cents.
Taking photos and sharing photos online are two absolutely different hobbies. The problem is that people expect them to go hand in hand.
As someone who likes taking photos and hates the other one... i get asked why don't I have an Instagram account or something like that, that I should share my photos. Truth is, I share my photos, I print the photos I like and I share them to people I care, I send them to my friends, etc. Lately one of my objectives is trying to be more daring about asking people to do street portraits, I usually share the photo with the person through email then. That's enough sharing for me. I just like to take photos.
All this to say, social media ain't ruining photography, it might be ruining sharing photos online, but it's ludicrous to think they are the same thing.

I think we are genuinely in a golden age for photography. You highlighted Paulie B in a video and made the point that not only do we see some great photos we get to hear from those making them what their process is. People like Roman Fox, Jimmy Cheng and Rupert Vandervell are all doing great work over here plus sharing their process: it's just terrific and I really wish when I got my first decent camera (cough) thirty years ago that I'd had access to that.

Great video Dee Rosa, I post on my instagram from time to time. but I do believe that is better to focus on capturing new photos, it does not matter if no one sees the photo. because its about practice and getting better and most importantly enjoy the process.

  • @jona3797

I think it’s ruined attention span. Like before, folks would look at photographs for minutes. Now it’s 1.3 seconds per photo. But yeah no more excuses!

What about, “what they can do for photography” because that is something I see less and less of these days. Especially since when I fell in love with photography, that seemed to be the purpose. It’s a personal process 1st and what we are seeing today is photography that is focused too much on everyone else.

Good points though. I always find it ridiculous when someone says things like that. I have never felt like social media ruined photography because I don’t follow people that all post the same stuff, follow trends, or post only whatll get the most likes, base their abilities on how many followers they have, etc.

Ok, I watched. Good points. My view however is one from an old time shooter. I come from the days when Monte Zucker was the wedding king. I guess what bothers me is the noise. You can barely hear above it sometimes. And the constant barrage of the same question - “What camera should I buy to shoot like this?” There’s just no willingnesss sometimes to understand the time and toil put in by a shooter to get to a certain level. Or that everyone can’t be great at everything. For instance, I can hold my own with product shooting, but I mostly suck at landscapes. Well that’s the end of my Saturday rant 😀 Good video, good questions.😀

Which camera do I have to buy?
Ans: two cameras. The first camera, you'll buy whatever you can afford within your budget. The second camera, once your first camera breaks, take notes of the features that you actually used and the ones that annoyed you and buy the camera that fits you like a glove (no more, no less).

I agree this is the best time ever to be a photographer (and I was one 50 years ago, too), but I must say that Instagram (and Facebook for that matter) are pure junk. I tried Instagram for awhile and could never be sure I had had a genuine human interaction. They're all "on the make." It's pure manipulation. At the time I tried it, I couldn't post anything from my computer so had to dick around choosing keywords with my iPhone. I'm amused by the supposedly serious photographers who post large-scale photos on the ridiculous, tiny, 1:1 selfie-style screen. They're just pandering to the lowest common denominator. RUclips, however, can be great if you're willing to filter out the commercial hacks -- and the mostly illiterate, misspelled comments to get to the few decent ones. You're thought provoking, Dee. Keep going.
