A lot of #Mac owners use #GoogleChrome as their web browser, and personally, I don’t get it. Apple markets its products as privacy-forward and seamlessly integrated with each other. The web browser is an essential component of your computer - you have a lot to gain by using Apple’s own. Here’s my attempt to sway it the other way - the top five reasons I use #Safari instead of Google Chrome.

When I switched from linux to macOS a few years ago I made a point to stick with the stock apps as much as possible and am glad I did. At first, Safari was a problem since the majority of ad blockers available for it are terrible at blocking ads at best, and I suspect nefarious at worst. Wipr is the only one that works well (including blocking RUclips ads....sorry!). That said, for work I use MS Edge browser. Microsoft web apps, which is what my employer uses, as well as lots of other SaaS apps, do not work well with Safari or non-chrome browsers. But for regular browsing - Safari all day. Only problem I find with it is that my credit union uses a 3rd party d bill pay service, so I have to temporarily disable cross-site tracking to get that frame to load. Minor inconvenience. Honestly, I don't understand why people would buy mac hardware just to install Chrome/Firefox, Microsoft Office, etc. on it. While Apple hardware is clearly better than anything else out there for the price, if I wanted to run non-Apple software primarily then I'd just go back to linux and use commodity hardware.

The big appeal to using a non-safari web browser on a Mac would probably be cross compatibility. If you’re switching between windows, Linux, and macOS occasionally it helps to have a cross platform browser like Firefox. It allows for syncing of passwords and bookmarks. If you’re only using macOS and an iPhone, I could see a desire to use Safari.

@@cultofmac I was messing around with the settings and I did notice that. I was using Edge. It does run better on Mac compared to windows machines imo. Overall, Safari is much better. It runs so much smoother and not as glitchy. I’m still learning how to use it though. The thing I hate the most is when I open up Safari it doesn’t fill the whole screen. I have to keep pressing the green dot to expand it, it’s annoying as hell. Hopefully one day the Apple guys will give safari a more modern look.

    Thanks for video.
I've never understood point about Safari 'lean' memory consumption.
    1) Don't know why, but actually it is significant! Each tab (especially 'heavy' like RUclips) eats ~ 1gig of RAM while Chrome about 200 mibs.
    2) Cache! Even when i've turned it off in developer mode, cache on each tab is enormous. And only one way to clean it - explicitly click cmd+opt+E.

  • @CuriousAndy

I wish I could use Safari since I like its look so much more than Chrome's. Unfortunately, a third-party Chrome is better optimized for MacOS than Apple's own browser. I'll repeat this unbelievable statement. Chrome is better optimized for Mac (!). I witnessed multiple times Safari failing to recognize MacOS's own text replacement templates while on Chome (on the very same websites) they work 100% of the time. It's ridiculous. And if you leave some tabs open for a while on Safari, in about 30-40 minutes they start bloating the RAM, memory pressure becomes yellow, then red, then it's time to reboot. :) Chrome keeps tabs consuming as little memory as a website's content allows and the memory pressure never leaves the green zone.
