Had the pleasure of seeing Harry in 1979 at a little college in my town 10000 people and Harry sang for well over 3 hours. His son Josh was 7 he danced on stage the whole 2nd half of the show. Harry hung around hours after signing autographs what an amazing man
When I watch this I remember when the world loved Americans. Their enthusiasm, always hopeful of a better day. I wonder what Harry would think of America now? When I heard that Harry had been killed, I fell to my knees. I was embarrassed that the sense of loss I felt for someone who I had only ever seen on a stage. Then I realised that this intimacy I felt was the gift he gave us. Vale Harry Chapin. A life well lived.
I had the privilege of seeing Harry Chaplin in Kingston Ont at a Queens University event. 1978 I was 15 years old. He was a few hours late because of a snow storm but hit the stage at maybe 10 pm. He had the crowd totally engaged and it was a life changing moment for me. I fell in love with the Cello and band. Harry Chaplin was incredibly honest and professional. My favorite night of true music from his sole to mine. I’ll never forget how much he meant to all of us that night. RIP Harry.
First heard Harry on the radio in 72 when they played Dogtown. Absolutely blew me away and loved him ever since. Beautiful stories that often make me cry as I did when he died.
I saw Harry three times and loved every one. The last was in Toledo on a terrible, stormy night when Thurman Munson (Yankee Catcher) lost his life in a small plane crash in Akron, OH (Aug 2, 79). Harry sang Mail Order Annie A Capella while waiting for other band memebers to arrive through the storm. A very memorable night!
rest in peace you old taxi driver .I am just glad I had the chance to see him live on a number of occasions these videos never really do his concert justice but it is nice to have them to come back to a nice memory and maybe a simpler time
Many Thanks for sharing, A group of us managed to see Harry and the Band every time he came to the U.K. Will never be forgotten, His music was just the best,
sometimes i get this crazy dream, that I just take off in my car, but you can travel on 10,000 miles and still stay where you are - there has been no one like Harry - the man gave 1/3 of his earnings to world hunger, God bless you Harry - my first concert this same year Pine Knob - I wish I could be as kind and giving as you were and not to mention your musical genius. SHAME on the 10 people who disliked this video! You have no clue.
Good Heaven's that was extraordinary!! WOW!! The humorous interaction with his band mates is really amazing. To this day, some 40+ years on from his passing, I don't think there is a better storyteller in the business. Thank you for this, from Tim in South Western Ontario!!
My father played Chapin songs every year. dedicated a whole night to him. I also play his songs sometimes. he was a great storyteller. I wish I could hear him live. but my father has told me about his concerts that he went to. and he was great live.
Harry chapin. A gifted musical genius. Badly and sadly missed. He was a wizard on stage the way he charmed the energy out of the audience. Gone but not forgotten . Rip Harry
I will never accept that he is dead. Death sucks especially when it occurs with someone so filled with life. Harry taught us how to care and help but the teacher was taken from us before class was out.
One of my favorite artists. Saw him live many times. My favorite song of his, which is not played much is "A Better Place To Be" He is definitely missed!
How strange to watch an audience that is obviously not familiar with his music but is definitely won over by the end of the concert. Still the best musician/storyteller I ever had the privilege of seeing in concert. Great example of the magic that was Harry. Thanks for posting this video. The sound and video quality is excellent considering the year it was recorded.
As I was listening to him set up Mail Order Annie, I couldn’t help but wonder what stories he must have told his children before bed! This is great! Thanks
Hey Gang, This is now a pay per view on the honor system.. If you view this video, please donate to WHY Hunger or your local food bank.. Harry would appreciate it.
+Gary Bearman A cool reminder, Gary.My husband and I do help to fill a church pantry. If everyone took a few canned goods to any food pantryit would help people in need so very much.
Gott Sei Danke The world can see this great night in Berlin :) Harry Chapin was hansome charming honest and what a voice. I recall the tragic news bulletin in July 1981. I had just got into his songs, go and buy GREATEST STORIES LIVE, JETZT ab sofort.
Vielen Danke This man was a pure humble talented considerate genius. I recorded Cats in the Cradle in 1994. I know he played in Belfast, in the dark old days, I will sing his songs until I die.
I remember seeing Harry live at the old Uptown Theater in K.C. Mo. way back in 76'. Great place to see a concert and Harry had everyone singing along! :)
Thank you so much for sharing this Rockpalast concert. I was in the audience that memorable night so many years ago - but I'd never seen the finished recording.
My new wife and i were both fans of Harry Chapin and for my birthday in 1977 she treated me to a live concert of his. We had to drive from our home in New Rochelle, NY to Poughkeepsie, NY. It was a great concert and yes we were up in the cheap seats..haha. Harry loved the folks in the cheap seats. I think this was one of the first times he performed " Dance Band On The Titanic " which we thought was awesome. I wish there was a video of his 1977 Poughkeepsie concert. Harry Chapin was a bright light who burned out too soon. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. .
Harry Chapin is someone I learned from as far as writing songs..My Mentor..But I have to say I just watched his excellent solo performance of his 10-21-78 Full Concert and it was very fulfilling for me..Excellent showmanship and the crowd was very much part of the show..Sorry to say this venue of a few German folks with their halfhearted response really kind of pissed me off..Great show but I believe Harry would of received a louder response from and alley of castaways than he did at this show..Oh one other thing I firmly believe that Billy Joel would of never had his first hit.."Piano Man" if it hadn't of sounded like it was..You got it..Harry Chapin..If you get a moment check out my tunes on this same channel..Thank You Harry...A Fan

.
Where have all the wonderful singer-songwriters gone?
The sad thing is there were not that many..that’s why we treasured them when we find them
April 12th 1977, at the WDR studios in Köln.
Sadly missed. Fortunate to have seen him live in the UK as part of this tour!👍
Harry reached into the part of your mind many of us ignore. If you listen you are changed.

I felt the same watching this....are these people into the concert or not??
By far,,, One of the most scariest looking audiences anywhere.
Why, is it because of the bald guy and you saw yourself?
great thank you.
