I installed the shifter and the B&M stick about 2 months ago. Your video is great, but no video can do that shifter justice compared to actually feeling it. It's like driving a sports car. I also love that there is next to zero shaking on the trail! I did the transfer case handle as well. If it's in your budget but you're on the fence, just do it! You will not regret it!
@@dnf7778 Yeah, you really do have to drop the transmission. I wondered the exact same thing myself. You'll understand why when you get the shift console/boot off. The good news is that it looks WAY MORE intimidating than it actually is. I'm not a gearhead at all, and once I was actually in there, it wasn't difficult or scary whatsoever. Just have a jack ready to support the transmission so it doesn't fall. It doesn't want to fall, but it's a solid precaution to take. Buy the new 'sponge'. It's not expensive. Then you can just rip the old f$#ker out. Even if you miraculously pulled that thing out in one piece, it's probably so dirty youd want to replace it anyway. Get the B&M Stick too. Do the whole thing up. You won't regret it. I'm in a Jeep club out here in CO and several guys in the group are manual JK's. You should have seen the looks in their eyes when they were shifting my new toy. Damn near worth the purchase alone. It's been a year and that shifter is still my favorite upgrade. Cheers!
"A tailgate table? What the hell would anyone ever need a tailgate table for?" $300 later, I have a tailgate table. We sing the song of Jeep my friend.
Awesome video -- I just installed the B&M shifter today, and this video made everything a piece of cake. My JK was slamming out of first gear when accelerating. After reviewing the factory shifter, i can see where the little 'tooth' on the bottom side was worn out from where it was engaging to the first and second gears.
Do you know what model number you used for the replacement seal? I got one this week, the model number is 52122269AC, and this is a very firm foam and not at all squishy like I expected. I doubt I'll be able to stuff it down around the shifter like is in the video because it just doesn't compress. It's like hard styrofoam coated in paint or something. Maybe I need an earlier version of the seal?
Thank you for showing this work being completed as any other shade tree mechanic would do. So frustrating trying to see videos on how to do a job, and people are using lifts and other high-end equipment that most of us don't have.
Nice video, I'm an avid off roader and haven't had my shifter pop out of gear, however the throws are definitely like an old tractor. I'll definitely consider this.
Great video. Quick question. If planning to replace foam isolator, do you have to drop fuel tank and tranny??? Sounds like you can just order a new one and replace from the top. Trying to save a couple of steps for others.
@@kallenm727I tried this today. You can get the old foam out by destroying it, but even that is a pain, and you won't get the new foam back in without dropping the fuel tank + tranny. There just isnt enough room. You need to do the drop anyway. Also, fyi for others, she drives fine without the foam if you need to. You'll definitely want the foam in eventually, but if you're new to this, don't be afraid. The foam is the only hard part. You won't be stuck with a dead vehicle.
The new seal, or donut, that you get at the dealership is hard styrofoam and will not compress. Unfortunately the only way to do this anymore is to cut your own seal out of a dense closed cell foam you buy at a craft store or Amazon. That's what I had to do this past weekend and it worked well. Now I have the Mopar seal which I paid for but cannot use or return.
Dorman has a much cheaper replacement than B&M. The reviews are very good. I wonder if there is someone who has experience with both and can weigh in on the choice for one over the other. The Dorman one includes the donut though!
It looked like the inner boot was torn near the front. Any issues with that piece? I've heard that with the stock shifter it may help to trim that piece to provide a better engagement and reduce noise. Thanks for the video! Considering this for my jk.
Great vid! Any idea if that aftermarket DV8 billet shifter knob fit on the B&M shifter stick. I am purchasing that new stick but just recently bought that exact billet aluminum knob and was hoping it would fit still
I had mine "professionally" installed and now it makes a growl or rattle noise..? It's hard to describe. But it just sounds like there's all kinds of noise coming from the center console and it's got me concerned. I took a look in there and saw they had basically shredded the foam isolator and just mashed it back in. Could it just be vibration from that being in such bad shape? Also if I wanted to remove the old one and replace it with a new one, do I have to drop the transmission or can I just carefully work it in place like you did, even with the tranny still bolted up?
In order to get it in place without ripping it apart, you will need to lower the transmission. Sorry, but it is really tight in there if you don't. Good luck!
The engine is connected to the chassis at two points. Once the transmision crossmember is unbolted the entire engine and transmission will rock backwards, dropping the trans down a bit.
Does this shifter ever break in or get easier to shift over time? I installed 2 months ago, and shortly after, I also decided to swap out the factory shifter stick for the B&M one. I just find that this is a harder shifter to engage and disengage. I am contemplating putting the factory shift stick back to get more leverage.
Lucky. When I first got my jk it would always pop out and start grinding in first. I’ve put on a few thousand miles and the issue has kinda gone away. I always keep my hand on the shifter for this reason.
This doesn't necessarily fix the problem. Several other videos/post said the same thing only to update that Jeeps sorry ass manual still pops out of gear. Any update now that you've had it a while?
Here is my input on this bs.....I spent 4 hours doing this job. This isn't NOT an hour Job. I spent $40 on the gasket. I have a 2008 jku. I attempted to.lower the transmission and it wouldn't lower more then an inch due to the muffler pipe being in the way. I spent more then 2 hours trying to get that foam gasket in and it tore on 3 of the corners. What a bunch of horse apples how easy you say this is. I am more then pissed off at how hard it is on an 08 wrangler. The hole is super small and getting that gasket thru is next to impossible especially on the corners. So mad now. Idk how the hell im going to seal it now. Anyone reading this understand that I've done all the work on my jeep. 3.5 ich lift, brand new front dana 44 diff, core control arm set, everything is new. This job is the most difficult thing I've done and this guy makes it look so easy. It's not easy. Maybe it's my lift that's making this job hard idk but I'm not happy.
I have an 09’ and I agree. That exhaust crossover right under the tranny will make this job a nightmare. I wish their was a way to do this 100% from the interior without dropping anything
I’d never buy a new jeep, only ever bought used. Even then it’s still expensive. The big issue with them is the price. If the rubicon model cost about 30 instead of the 50 then hell yeah I’d buy a new one. They just cost too much for the quality, doesn’t mean they aren’t great vehicles.

Hey man do you really gave to drop the t- case and that stuff or can you just wiggle that sponge out without doing that? Hope you answer back mate

Interesting. Didn't know I wanted a new shifter until now.

Thanks for also taking the time to demonstrate the old shifter vs the new shifting distances. Helped me really see how much shorter the movements are.
Great install video. I'll definitely refer back to it when I finally do this upgrade to my 2010 JK. Thanks so much!

Now you need to replace the transfercase shifter with the B&M shifter and your good to go! Cheer's

Can you please review some engine mods for 3.6 pentastar? Like a stroker kit?
And the new rear end gears must have made the biggest difference! ;)-
Wait how does the transmission lower even a little bit if it's connected to the engine?
The engine is connected to the chassis at two points. Once the transmision crossmember is unbolted the entire engine and transmission will rock backwards, dropping the trans down a bit.
What about the "2005"jeep wrangler?????
Nothing like spending $60 frickin grand then having to replace something like this because the original is junk. Typical Chrysler Fiat Peugeot.
