Bellatrix never had to hide who she was, although her views were questionable they were still acceptable as they were at some level still normal. She came from a powerful family with money so that was something she didn’t have to hide either. She didn’t have anything to be ashamed about. She grew up with pride on who she was, pride on her blood purity, pride on her philosophy, pride on her loyalty and even pride on her proudness.
Umbridge didn’t have anything to be embarrassed of either, but she thought she did, as her family was not a known name, nor did she have money. She thought her father being a janitor and her mom and brothers being muggles was something she had to hide. However, her hiding her true background and life is what made her dangerous, because by spending years pretending is what thought her how to lie, how to manipulate, and how to seem innocent when needed.

@lygophile Same. Most of my disappointment was because Bellatrix was one of the most feared Death Eaters while Molly was a housewife.. and while I'm not disparaging the role of a homemaker, I just doubt that someone who didn't seem to take part in the previous war and focused most if not all of her time on her large family would have the time to become an accomplished duelist/fighter. Honestly it sort of takes a big ol' dump on the idea that there's a difference in "power" between witches/wizards.

Bellatrix was Voldemort's most loyal Death Eater by a landslide. She is the ONLY one who suspected Snape to be on Dumbledore's side. Not only that, she also desired Voldemort, she was obsessed with him. When a person develops a crush or desire for someone, they begin to 'mirror' them, to imitate their behaviour. In numerous cases, when you see a person you respect talking in a room, you later notice you both are sitting in the same position (legs crossed, arms folded etc.).
Bellatrix simply wanted to be like Voldemort. When Voldemort was absent, she took control of the situation, became the boss in the room and gave orders and imitated Voldemort's cruelty.
However with Voldemort present, she displayed him her loyalty, she was willing to be his slave. It's 2 completely opposite personalities in 1 person. It would drive anyone to insanity.

B gets my respect as a "baddie" for her boldness and surety of evil, there's no guess work. U is pretty like a colorful venomous animal, admire her surroundings, clothings style, color palate, but underneath she's venemous, dark and you really have to dig down and see her for she truly is. I've know people like U in my life and trust me when I say I'd rather deal with outright crazy evil than hidden evil under a false exterior of love and warmth which she attempts to hide from others. To me, she's worse than Voldemort. Also, and this is an aside, I'm an empathic Scorpio so I deal with these sorts of things on a level most can't get to mentally or emotionally.

Regulus and Narcissa chose to follow their family’s teachings but not extremely. They all thought they were doing the right things from their points of view. He’s not saying Bellatrix had no choice. Psychopaths can neither feel any kind of emotions and only do things for their own benefits. Sociopaths on the other hand, do crazy shit in order to please something or someone whom or with they've invested a lot of emotions into. Voldemort is a Psychopath and Bellatrix is a Sociopath.

We also know literally next to nothing of her childhood or even the rest of the wider Black family, only the fanon interpretations.
Narcissa and Andromeda had the same upbringing as her, yet they weren’t sociopaths, so blaming her bad choices on her family is just lazy and not entirely accurate based on the confirmed facts in canon.
There’s a difference between upholding pureblood supremacist views as most of the so called ‘sacred 28’ did, not just the Blacks, and actually being a Bellatrix. Based on actual canon, not the fanon interpretations, I honestly don’t think Bellatrix is the norm in the Black family but an extreme case. I don’t understand why people assume differently, it’s obvious to me that they were just a magical aristocratic house who at the worst ignored the people they disowned, it was Bellatrix who brought murder and “pruning” in to the mix. So she’s the anomaly.

@@aryabhatt8896 it happened when she was leaving the ministry in book 5. Only in the book though. Dumbledore shoots a spell at her when he’s restraining the death eaters and she blocks it. This happens after he immobilized her with statues. She also did this after defeating Kingsley, Tonks, and Sirius in rapid succession. She’s one of the most powerful people in the series, and her death was extremely circumstantial. She had just finished dueling Hermione, Ginny, and Luna all at once without her original wand, and then she had to fight enraged love amped Mrs.Weasly.

I don't know if what we learn about Bellatrix from that fanmade film should be taken as actual fact, but since you use footage from it in this video, I assume you take it at least somewhat seriously.
In that film it is shown how Bellatrix's father erases her memories every time she seems to develop an independent sense of value. He's basically trying to make her forget she is her own person, by erasing her every memory of whatever she values out of her own interest, instead of what she's taught to value.
Imagine what that does to a person. You can't remember anything you value for yourself, and what you do remember, you don't give a shit about. I imagine, if I would be in her shoes, it would make me think I don't give a flying fuck about life in general.
As a consequence, I wouldn't fear death, which would enable me to go to great lengths to achieve whatever I want to achieve (or serve lord Voldemort). I also wouldn't have any respect for the life of someone else, since life in general has no value. Therefore, I could kill without remorse.
So, in my opinion, if anything made her go mental, it's the fact that any memory that had any value to her got erased.

This is interesting to think about, I haven't seen the fanmade film but it's important to remember that it's not canon. Now, could this have been canon in the HP series if we had a book or books just focused on Bellatrix and her family or just bellatrix? maybe. However, I really don't see it as a thing that could've actually happened. Bellatrix has always been very proud of her family's traditions and values and fully embraced them as her own. She didn't seek other viewpoints, she valued and seen the pro pure blood beliefs as the best and the only real belief to follow. That makes Bellatrix the complete opposite to Andromeda who went the complete opposite direction and ditched her pro pureblood beliefs after dating and eventually marrying Ted Tonks.

I think Bellatrix was the best actor in the Harry Potter series. When I compare all of the others, one at a time, to her, she is the most believable. Her attitude, posturing, facial expressions, when she went to the bank, trying to match Hermione as Bellatrix. She didn't impress me by her power but by truly being deranged, her laugh, etc. I know Professor Dumbledore, Professor, McGonagall, & even Lord Voltimore, were probably more powerful, but she could convince you she was the strongest.

I do love the character of Bellatrix Lestrange. The dynamic between her and Lord Voldemort is very intriguing. I just always assumed her character was naturally evil and of course raised in a rich wizarding family that brainwashed pure blooded ideologies in her. Then the Dark Lord comes along of course and she was inspired to follow him wholeheartedly. She was clearly in love with him, in my opinion whether she was married to Rodolphus or not. The dark lord ascending chapter, the first chapter of year 7 was case in point how obsessive she was of him. When he would address her and mildly compliment her the way her eyes would wail with tears of happiness and her cheeks would flush it was borderline disturbing lol. But intriguing. I hate to have a crude perspective on a pg story but I always suspected that her eyes weren't the only part of her body that was watering up🙄 and even though Voldemort obviously isn't capable of feeling love it's clear he held her in high regard and respect. It's an intriguing dynamic and I do like it

04:48 If there was no hope for Bellatrix because of her upbringing, why were her sisters different, especially Andromeda? Why was Sirius different? Why did she, alone of them all, lack free will? Your argument makes little sense. On some level, she must have made a choice. But she could have chosen some other way. Just as it seems every other member of the Black family did, including Sirius' brother in the end.

In contrast, I can't stand Dolores Umbridge--although she's also a well-drawn character--because she's dishonest, using a sometimes gracious, sometimes solicitous front to hide her venom, viciousness, and racism. Also, Dolores is given governmental authority and abuses it. Umbridge is power-mad.

    • @paulinak.1736

I think this feeling inspired the worst part of her. She was a very black-or-white person - she could only madly love or hate something, there was no grey for her in between. When she followed a person or idea, it was blindly and to the very end. So the feelings she held for Voldemort were obsessive and all-consuming. She practically worshipped him. She would do anything, even humiliate herself if only to please him. One snarl of his was the tragedy. It wasn't healthy, it only destroyed her even more. And to her despair, she felt for the man who not only couldn't love her back but once he realized she loved him, he despised her for that. He couldn't feel nor understand love, he saw it as a weakness, nothing more. Maybe she reminds him of his mother who developed a very similar obsession towards his father. Voldemort must have known it at some point. And although he was very proud Slytherin heir, he wasn't proud of the Gaunt family nor his mother. He probably saw her as a weak, pathetic woman. So the more obsessive Bellactix was towards him, his despise only grew.

I never thought about this much before, but your video made me consider it: Voldemort doesn't seem to feel the same hatred for half-bloods/Muggle-borns that his followers do. He is one, after all. Blood purity the issue he uses to build loyal followers among powerful families, but he doesn't actually care about it at all. The power, and staying alive, are everything. Bellatrix is the exact opposite--her hatred for "mudbloods" drives her, to the extent that she doesn't care about her physical safety or how she looks to others. She's more of a true believer than the leader himself, and that's the only reason he can control her.

She made her choices, Regulus had no outside influences at all having been sorted into Slytherin when he was 11 but he was self aware enough to wise up at 18 anyway. If we look at canon alone, we also know literally next to nothing of her childhood or even the rest of the wider Black family, like Orion, Alphard, etc. There could well have been a madness in the Rosiers? We don’t know.
Besides, sociopaths are made (if she was one because we don’t even know what type of disorder she had in the first place), whilst psychopaths are born. So how is it hereditary in her family, especially since she was the only extreme case in her generation?
There’s a difference between upholding outdated pureblood supremacist views as most of the so called ‘sacred 28’ did, not just the Blacks, and actually being a Bellatrix. Based on actual canon, not the fanon interpretations, I honestly don’t think Bellatrix is the norm in the Black family but an extreme case. I don’t understand why people assume differently, it’s obvious to me that they were just a magical aristocratic house who at the worst just ignored the people they disowned, it was Bellatrix who brought murder and “pruning” in to the mix. So she’s the anomaly.
Narcissa and Andromeda had the same upbringing as her, yet they weren’t sociopaths, so blaming her bad choices on her entire family is just lazy and not entirely accurate if it’s mostly based on fanon interpretations. We don’t even know the origins of those supremacist beliefs either, or if every family member was as extreme as the next.
Please don’t confuse fanon and head canon with actual canon!
