James Hegarty Hi! Yes, it’s true.... I totally remember the controversy around it.... George Jackson (no relation to the Jackson Five (or J5 as they were known) wrote the song with the Jackson Five in mind...Motown had its own policy as to who could write or submit songs for the J5, and at that time most of the songs were written and produced by a team known as “The Corporation “ which consisted of Holland, Dozier and Holland and Berry Gordy himself. If you were not a songwriter under contract at Motown, you would not even have been considered. The group wanted to write and produce their own songs....and Berry would not let them.... ( there is sooo much money to be made when a singer can write their own songs). It also cost the Jackson Five the loss of their name as Motown had put it in their contract that they owned all rights to it... Thus the group was renamed The Jacksons, signed with Epic Records and the rest is history.....The Jackson’s would eventually have their own hits writing and producing such songs as “Shake Your Body” , “ Can You Feel It” and “Heartbreak Hotel”.... and we all know about Michael....In fact Michael told Berry Gordy the only way he would do “Motown 25” was if he was allowed to perform “Billie Jean” (a song that he had written and produced). That performance took Michael’s career to a whole nother level.....When Donny was wanting to make his comeback years later ..... he consulted Michael and ask what to do and was told “ You should release the record but don’t have your name revealed....let the talent talk for you”... Donny did and “ Soldier Of Love” launched his comeback....(Sorry the answer is sooo long but I love trivia and pop culture !)
They probably told them if they made noise, they would get kicked out. I remember a Merv Griffin show with the Bay City Rollers on it. They told the girls if they would be quiet they could sit on the stage. Normally something like that would get cut out of the show.
it was the Flip Wilson show, so most of the audience were probably in their 30s to 50s. That, and Americans didn't behave like common street trash back then.

They boys could rock. Crazy Horses, Down by the Lazy River, and YoYo are proof they had the chops. With Merrill's soulful voice they could have been at the top of the Rock world if only they had been allowed to pursue it.
As corn-balled as they may be interpreted by today's standards, these boys put a whole lot of work into this number. The choreography, as dated as the jump suits make them appear, is beautiful and at times quite mesmerizing. Well done Osmonds of yesteryear! And thanks for the posting this vid. Great to see this number.
I did not realize how good the Osmond's really were until I took a look back. They were fantastic musicians and dancers. They have been unappreciated and under valued as a group very sad.
Merrill had such a great rock and roll voice. This song, crazy horses and lazy river really reflect this. I love the dance moves in this video, just amazing how well they move and so in sync.
saw them in 1973 at the Indiana State Fair. Genuinely talented. They played their instruments. They had a Karate demo in the show and one of the other brotbers accidently kicked Jay and broke his nose. They got medics and treated Jay," Please excuse us for a moment while we pray for our brother." By George he came back out and finished the show! bandaged and all. They are the ultimate professionals. ❤
All dance moves in sync and on point!!! Loved watching Donny bounce with his hair bouncing right along!! Just makes me realize I was smart to be a mega-fan!!! All so talented!!!
The Osmonds! I loved this song. Love those groovy uniforms. The dancing.. the singing. The voices. The hair. Those smiles. Those Osmond boys. They are all so hot!
Scott Montgomery even though this song has a lot of unison...You know full well the Osmonds were well known for intricate Harmony on many of their songs!
Yes, the synchronisation of every move and step is incredible. Just s pop song but man did they know how to present it! Personally, I think they were better than the Jackson 5. I've always liked the Osmonds, even when, as a teenager, it would have been 'uncool'. And the great thing is they stand for something - good morals and values - which, god knows is so badly lacking in our modern world. I'm not religious - don't need to be to respect values.
Swiped my Mom’s albums, when I discovered these cats.......Had posters all over my wall.......while others my age had a crush on Donny, (& mind you he & I are about the same age), I was crushin’ on Jay......Still an awesome jam.....along with ‘Down by the Lazy River’.........Guys, you haven’t been forgotten.....don’t none of us move like that anymore......except in our heart & soul! You guys will always Rock in my world! PEACE & LOVE
They also had martial arts training from Chuck Norris at one time in their life...they have a dance/music/martial arts routine in one video where they incorporate some of it...kicking, breaking boards...They are the real deal, I know...I have been in marital arts for over 35 years and taught for many years. Forever Osmond fan!!
My mom worked food service at a hotel in Allentown, PA when the Osmonds stayed there when they performed at the Allentown Fair in the 1970s. She delivered room service many times and said they were the nicest, most polite boys every time
I have a deeper appreciation of their music and talent now at the age of 61 than I did when I was I was an 11 year old tween, who was soooooo in love with them and especially Donny❤❤❤
VERY talented. Big fan since 1970. Loved that they stuck to their morals. YoYo and their choreography performing YoYo has been my all time favorite. Proud to be a fan!
Donny includes this video in his Vegas act and dances to it. And then he does a newer updated version that he sings. This is one of the highlights of the show. It is amazing to watch 54 year old Donny keep up with his 14 year old self.
50 years ago today! I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 12 years old and it was on this day I developed the crush that would last for the next 3 1/2 years. I just thought Donny Osmond was the cutest thing alive. I spent my allowances on Osmond brothers albums, bought all the teeny bopper magazines with him in them, had posters all over my walls and drove my mother up a wall. It's so hard to believe all that started 50 years ago. I can still sort of see what I saw then but this time around I'm more amazed at how well they danced. Someone must've worked hard on their choreography.
I know it looks funny now, but these dance moves were hot at the time, that was how it was. The guys were perfectly in time with the moves and the sound, it's all done with enormous enthusiasm and you can see they're giving it all they've got, which is considerable. They'd all been performing since they were little boys, they were consummate professionals. People loved them, parents and kids alike. Crazy now, but those were better times in some ways.
What a A Very Talented Family...This Song is very Catchy and the Choreography is Brilliant...A Lot of Hard Work No Doubt but a Lot of Very Natural Talent...Love It :)
Eric Dangerfield the Jacksons were amazing and incredibly talented, but there is really no comparison on talent..every single one of the Osmonds played more than one instrument..they were true musicians, and their harmonies were second to none..the Jacksons all had great voices, but rarely harmonized because they focused more on dance moves..The Osmonds could and did both..they were known as the “one take” Osmonds for a reason..but don’t get me wrong, I’m not throwing shade at the Jacksons at all..they are still one of my favorite groups from the 70’s, but if you do some research, you’ll find that the Jacksons openly admitted to being fans of and strived to be more like The Osmonds
@@blinddawgraye Uhm, no! Of the Jackson 5, only Michael, and Jermaine could carry a tune. Michael was the dancer. Marlon was marginal. And only two were musicians. (Excluding percussion) But, there's no question which group had the bigger impact on the industry. None. And if we're talking about number one hits, it isn't even close. However, the Osmonds had more pure vocalists than the J5, and could dance better. (as a unit, excluding Michael)
In 1972, I got to go to my first concert, and it was The Osmond Brothers with The Heywoods opening. There was so much screaming going on you couldn't hear them sing, let alone hear the music. Still enjoyed it.
They were my first concert also, and in 1972! I saw them in Nashville, TN. I saw one of the Heywoods walking around between acts. I think his name was Rick. He was really nice.
I wasn’t a huge fan growing up, but watching some of their videos, I realize I was wrong. They were a hugely talented family and had great stage presence. I’d be hard pressed to find a current group with as much talent and presence today. They have been disrespected because of their religion and values; now that I’m 64 and see what how far we’ve fallen, I respect them all the more for sticking to their values.
How did I just now come upon this?? I had no clue the Osmonds were ever this "rebellious." The long hair, the lyrics, the dancing! The choreography is amazing. I can't stop watching.
To do that dance with such synchrony on that small stage without falling off is amazing! Dancers can relate. But dancing and singing at the same time...... incredible! ❤❤
Watching videos of the Osmonds...they always look like they are having so much fun! Not knocking the Jackson's, because I love them too, but they looked at times forced to sing
I grew up in Huntington Beach California and went to Crestview Elementary when this was popular. In fact not only am I the same age as Donny Osmond we share the same birthday. I personally liked the Osmonds and the J5 about the same as most did other kids. The young girls all had teenie bopper crushes on Donny Osmond. I think Michael Jackson was a little younger. They boys could rock. Crazy Horses, Down by the Lazy River, and YoYo are proof they had the chops. With Merrill's soulful voice they could have been at the top of the Rock world if only they had been allowed to pursue it.
They knew how to make music and keep it clean and were very talented. They are amazing.
Their dance moves are so awesome
As corn-balled as they may be interpreted by today's standards, these boys put a whole lot of work into this number. The choreography, as dated as the jump suits make them appear, is beautiful and at times quite mesmerizing. Well done Osmonds of yesteryear! And thanks for the posting this vid. Great to see this number.
I did not realize how good the Osmond's really were until I took a look back. They were fantastic musicians and dancers. They have been unappreciated and under valued as a group very sad.
I concur with you 👍
I love the outfits in this, and yes they worked very hard.
And these shiny black suits w the hip hugger belts are actually very sexy!
I never get tired of seeing this.
I'm 61 and was there when this aired of the Flip Wilson Show. Still amazes me.
Do you have any behind the scenes info to share? I wish we could see all of them at the same time without all the close-ups
They are INCREDIBLE. I didn't appreciate them back in the day. Donny still has an amazing voice in 2021.
I was a kid and loved them.
Agree. His stage performance in Musicals. Enjoyable talent!
2023 now.
PERFECT choreography!
Jay osmond was their lead dancer.
@@BarbieMak225 Cool! Didn't know that. Love their dance moves! I'm wore out just watching them. 😊
Jay was the choreographer on the Donny and Marie show!
Man! These boys can rock it out! Merrill is an awesome lead!!!!
Boys ? I think Sister Mary is also in it 🤣
@@fcamsterdam4364 Weirdo.
@@fcamsterdam4364 No, she isn't. Not in this video. And she never performed with the group.
*Marie
Merrill Osmond sure had a voice that stood out. Memorable. I love it
Merrill had such a great rock and roll voice.
That is amazing! Always the consummate troopers. I can hear, “The show must go on”.
wow amazing, I was only 10, so I never saw them thanks for the info.
The 60s and 70s were so much fun. I'd go back anytime. Great memories of great days
Tight performance !!! The Osmonds rocked on this one !!!
They rocked on all upbeat songs!
Wow if only people knew how great this music was they are missing a lot
All dance moves in sync and on point!!! Loved watching Donny bounce with his hair bouncing right along!! Just makes me realize I was smart to be a mega-fan!!! All so talented!!!
Hello Susan, How are you doing?
The Osmonds! I loved this song. Love those groovy uniforms. The dancing.. the singing. The voices. The hair. Those smiles. Those Osmond boys. They are all so hot!
Those dance moves were off the charts.
I have loved this group and esp Donny for 50 years!! Still love them Great Memories!!!
I'm really impressed with the choreography. The unison is very, very good.
They were known as the one take Osmonds so they practiced til they were perfect.
Scott Montgomery even though this song has a lot of unison...You know full well the Osmonds were well known for intricate Harmony on many of their songs!
Amazing
Yes, the synchronisation of every move and step is incredible. Just s pop song but man did they know how to present it! Personally, I think they were better than the Jackson 5. I've always liked the Osmonds, even when, as a teenager, it would have been 'uncool'. And the great thing is they stand for something - good morals and values - which, god knows is so badly lacking in our modern world. I'm not religious - don't need to be to respect values.
lotsa steps too
Highly underrated group. So much talent and great music!
Hey I remember watching this when I was younger!! Thanks for posting!!!
Donny's only 6 mos older than I am, but I was sooo in love with Merrill ... 😊
She delivered room service many times and said they were the nicest, most polite boys every time
Awesome!
I have a deeper appreciation of their music and talent now at the age of 61 than I did when I was I was an 11 year old tween, who was soooooo in love with them and especially Donny❤❤❤
A superb pop group, that's all there is to it
♥
They are in perfect sequence when dancing. I love this video. I could watch it over and over. I just can't get over how great their dancing is!
How can the audience just sit there like that, they are an amazing family
Great example of how hard the Osmonds worked to craft an entertaining show. They earned their success.
All of these brothers grew into handsome decent men . this says alot about their parents,Quality family.
That is a great dance routine!
VERY talented. Big fan since 1970. Loved that they stuck to their morals. YoYo and their choreography performing YoYo has been my all time favorite. Proud to be a fan!
Ageless Talent, beauty, and blessings through the testing and trials only to be as gold.
dam i was 10 years old living in watts ca, yep im black and i say the osmonds were sharp
i heard that, choreography was tight...
My question is where did they get all those moves?
That ain't from Utah!
Yes they were But I liked the Jackson 5 better
I liked both of them equally.
The jammed!!!
me too
10 years old
Loved the choreography! Such talent!!
I don't care what anyone say';s they had talent
steven jones my sister loved them
Yesss they did!
They still have talent!
YES THEY DID!!!!
They had Black blood in them. No White people could dace that well back then.
Donny includes this video in his Vegas act and dances to it. And then he does a newer updated version that he sings. This is one of the highlights of the show. It is amazing to watch 54 year old Donny keep up with his 14 year old self.
You could have giveb us the link to it.
One of the most talented acts of all time.
I agree!
Absolutely! I agree 100%!
I remember the rivalry of the Osmonds vs the Jackson 5 back in the day. I enjoyed the music of both groups equally.
Its actually mentioned in the the Jacksons movie by their father, basically telling the kids that they have to get up to par with the Osmonds
Sydaball aha I remember that scene
I prefer Jacksons 5 100%!
The Osmond's copied from the Jackson's
You have to give them credit they could all move
I absolutely love this song & dance!
I remember this on TV. Still gives me chills today!!!! What a talented family. LOve 'em
It doesn't look funny. They move better than the crappy boy bands there are these days.
Better then in A LOT of ways!
What a A Very Talented Family...This Song is very Catchy and the Choreography is Brilliant...A Lot of Hard Work No Doubt but a Lot of Very Natural Talent...Love It :)
They were & will always be the ultimate boy band perfect moves perfect harmonies
That's because they were musicians.
Nothing has ever compared to the harmonizing and dance moves.
Nah the Jackson 5 and New Edition we’re better in my opinion
This is the best Osmond Brothers music video I've ever seen. And I love their outfits. Thank you.
Their Elvis outfits cemented their cringiness for me.
I loved the Osmonds as much as I loved the Jacksons. Both groups shared the same choreographer, Cholly Atkins and their dancing skills were so intact.
Why are the Jackson 5 moves much more basic than the Osmonds?
An amazing performance. They sure earned
their paychecks on this one. "Wow"!
I just love it, they could sure dance and those voices, what a blast from the past, awesome
Hello Gail, How are you doing?
The best choreography ever. The best of the best.
I just love the osmonds a fan for so many years. I just love this song....so much talent in all
Choreography is on fire!
Hi Paul Look like Jackson 5
Anyone else still listening in 2024?
oh my the Osmonds were are still are very good looking .. love love love the Osmond family
Love the Osmond's then and now.
wonder how marie felt growing up with 8 brothers
I’ve always loved the Osmond.. ❤️
Wow that's really amazing thanks dear, I hope you're fine and staying safe.....
@@donnyosmondmusic9370Sorry the only way I’d speak with you if your really Donny Osmond.
The Osmonds are an amazing talent! Agreed 100%! The moves, the beat, and the performance is awesome!
In 1972, I got to go to my first concert, and it was The Osmond Brothers with The Heywoods opening. There was so much screaming going on you couldn't hear them sing, let alone hear the music. Still enjoyed it.
Hello Leora, How are you doing?
They were my first concert also, and in 1972! I saw them in Nashville, TN. I saw one of the Heywoods walking around between acts. I think his name was Rick. He was really nice.
And to stand for Good....
Outstanding. All their lives... Bravo
These guys were very talented! Not only could they sing, but their choreography was spot on! Loved The Osmonds! Crazy Horses was my favorite!
I make my living doing music. Live performance is not for the weak. The Osmonds ALWAYS go hard.
The Osmonds were my favorite! I had every single they ever put out. I was in love with Donny! Lol An amazingly talented family!
But these boys along with the Jackson's were well liked equally and all good clean cut boys.
He was less than year younger than Donny.
DonDraperism
I
They're really good. They always were. A ton of raw talent.
Why don't we play their music anymore? So many 70's hits still get played.
