  • In this video, I'll show you how to fix a Whirlpool, Amana, Inglis, or Roper washer that's off balance. This is a common problem that can be easily fixed by repositioning the washer's skid plate.
Remember to unplug your appliances from power and shut off any water before attempting any repairs. My videos are for entertainment purposes only and are not to be taken as repair advice. Please consult a certified appliance repair technician if you are uncomfortable doing DIY work on your appliances. Proceed at your own risk.
There is a friction plate in between the base of your washer and the bottom of the washer tub. It moves freely and can become miss aligned after transporting the washer, or an uneven load. First obviously check your suspension springs and friction pads. If those are good, make sure your friction plate is lined up correctly!

I’d love to be doing videos full time, bringing DIY info to as many people as possible, saving you all time, money, and the frustration of calling in a repair person or having to buy new appliances. Donations are always welcomed on my Venmo too @joshcobb4100 which all funds will go to making more, better videos! But really…I just hope this video helps someone out and saves them a headache!
Once I replace my income with video revenue I’ll donate the units I fix to the Veterans here in my area that could really use the help. It’s been a passion project for some time and now I’m working towards my goal of really helping not only my viewers but my local community.

Thank you for posting this. Never would have thought to look at the plate. I was able to reposition the plate by myself. I had to unclip the back spring and then alternate inserting 3/4" boards under the motor and gear box as I "walked" it upwards. Then I could take my time repositioning the plate.

This video maybe a couple years old but it was my saving grace. I had literally checked everything and couldn’t figure out why it was still banging around and off balance. I was to the point of breaking down to get a different washer. So thank you very much putting this video up. It was exactly what was wrong with mine.

Excellent diagnosis!!! My sears 500 had been Shaking like crazy..all 5 springs good, plate location good, even removed balance ring to make sure fluid was there..I did notice my drum movement was very sticky...pads again , were perfect. I pushed up the drum and sprayed silicone lube on all 6 pad sets...washer runs perfectly..another possible cause..sticky pads

The old washer in my place had the motor fail and I had just replaced it with a second hand one when the "new" one had this issue during the first load I ran. I had tried replacing the spring in the back, checked all the others, leveled it, was considering either calling out a professional or replacing the balance ring when I finally found this video. This was exactly my issue and while it took some contorting to do it myself (and a fair amount of cursing), it absolutely fixed the problem! Thank you so much!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Went & bought all new springs because the used Kenmore I'd just bought (my old Maytag's transmission went out, more's the pity) was banging the sides of the machine like a monster was trying to get out. Yes. That bad. Once I took the cover off, the tub was sitting VERY wonky and all the springs looked good. I moved the tub and it seemed like it would move from one very off position to the next - never sitting properly. So I looked underneath and something didn't seem right. Mind you, I've NEVER worked on a washer before, but I could tell something wasn't right, so I came on here and searched - figured someone, somewhere should have the answer, and here you were! This is the EXACT problem. Now to to fix it. Thanks again!

Josh . I followed part of what you just did on your vid . I’m in UK but got a really old whirlpool top loader . I’m talking probably 32 years old and had the symptoms you described but found a string on the floor once I’d got the cabinet off it was a thin spring one leg longer than the other . Put it back on after drilling a small hole IB frame so fingers crossed it’ll run ok .. your tips helped me a bit 👍

I have the same model washer with the same problem. I have been scouring the Internet for solutions, and they all say “springs, brackets, suspension pads, etc.”. So I removed my cabinet last night to examine these parts, and they all appear to be fine. I began to wonder if the springs could look fine while still being fatigued/worn enough to cause the issue. Also, I had to consider whether the problem is deep inside- maybe it’s the washer drive block, which would require much more disassembly than I’m capable of accomplishing. But now, thanks to you and this excellent video, I have another possible solution. Even if it turns out not to be the answer for my washer, many thanks for providing the solution for so many people!

On Kenmores/Whirlpools if you take the inner and outer tubs off with the agitator you will find that plate which on mine is triangle shaped has alignment holes. There also happens to be 2 alignment pin containers on the sides of the main platform. Take the pins out and use them to properly orient the triangular shaped tub support back in place and then stow the alignment pins back where they were. These older machines are SO much better than the sensitive newer styles and much more dependable. It's a shame the government stuck their useless nose in to mandate water saving machines that work like garbage.

Has nothing to do with how much water they use, and everything with manufacturing cheaper stuff that looks like the guts of a Mattel toy electric car. The new machines look cute on the outside, but underneath it's a mess of skinny plastic pulleys and skimpy sheet metal.

I tried all these fixes to get the washer to stop shaking. Here is how I fixed it. Take out the tub, it comes right out after removing the center bolt. Flip the tub upside down and shake it. Remove the $2.50 in coin trapped between the two parts of the tub. That's it, the shocks are fine, they slide on the rods, the springs are fine if not broken. Washer works like new.

Right On Bro! I'll check that critical part out before I even assume it's the springs or the suspension rods

Thanks so much! I had done the clutch repair along with the capacitor due to no spin, I guess all that new force that it didn't used to have now had the strength to break the inner tub shaft where it had been rusting away. After replacing the inner tub it was spinning really bad and couldn't figure it out as the springs looked fine. Saw your video and remembered while I was doing the clutch that plate had some loose and I didn't realize it had to be lined up a certain way. Lifted it up with a piece of wood (was thinking later a scissor jack might work too) and was able to line it up correctly and now it's working great again!

Isnt that plate called a skate plate. Anyway I seen another video on tilted tub. Mine is tilted forward and some of the water is spilling behind tub . Anyway the other video took the pump and motor out way then lifted tub with a piece of wood to freely align skate plate.
I like your way better, get the wife to earn her keep and lift tub.

Ty so much for this vid. I just replaced my outer tub and all the springs on my old kenmore and yes these old school machines are definitely the best longest lasting washers out there. Anyhow my drum is slamming violently to where u gotta kill the machine before it wrecks itself. I'm going to check that floating plate deck and see if that's my issue. I will definitely let you know ...again ty so much for this super awesome video

We recently moved and the first time we used the washer, it shook. The load was even so I took everything out and it still shook whem empty. Found a video about springs and thought, great, easy fix. Got the whole thing apart and the springs were fine. I also think the pads are ok. Your video was super helpful and i think it is the exact problem we have. I am, however, having a hard time figuring out exactly what the plate is that is not attached with the notches. Has anyone come across any other pics or videos that show the plate? Thanks

If you look at the video at 2:51 to your right there will be a little clear capsule attached to the frame, there are 3 of these on most washers, inside of the capsule there is a steel pin, these are called transport pins.
When a washer is moved you insert these pins in the corresponding holes under each one, each pin has a little hole in its head, you can thread a little thin rope thru all 3 and this keeps your washer from moving inside ,its pain to do so no one does it but they do it at the factory,it holds all the components together for transportation, once you get your washer where you want it just pull on the rope and the little pins will fall back into their capsules and your done.

I have a 28 year old Kenmore 80 Series and at some point in time the basket gradually started leaning to the left. I replaced the suspension springs thinking that was the problem but it wasn't. After viewing this video and removing the cover and looking for the plate Josh spoke of, I noticed that the front adjustment screw on the left was lower than the one on the right. With the use of a level I discovered that it was a bubble off. After adjusting the right to left level and checking the front to back and adjusting as necessary, the basket now sits straight with a load in it. Just something to think about and check if your machine's basket is leaning to one side.

You should do a video of this so I can see exactly what you're talking about. I've had this issue several times with the basket leaning to the right and have yet to figure it out. Sounds like you might have figured it out! If it's not too much trouble and you feel like shooting me a couple of pictures if posting a video is not an option I would love to discuss this further. My email is josh.cobb85@gmail.com.
