I was at Davy Jones memorial service in NYC backstage and Micky was inconsolable and wouldn’t come out of his dressing room. It broke my heart.
I've seen videos from that night. I think it was the first time he ever sang Daydream Believer, which of course is a Davy song. His voice was breaking so much you couldn't understand anything he were singing.
@@PlumbPitiful I'm watching a Monkeys marathon on the Decades channel in Ga. My son is 34 watched a couple of episodes with me, he said " he really enjoyed the show". I was 8years old when it began. We watched it every week when I was a child. They made us laugh back then and still make me laugh 😆
WOW 😲, I bet that was a memorable day.
No you weren't. Mickey came out and sang.
R.I.P. Davy, Peter and Mike. Thank you Micky for all you do to keep their memory alive, I’m glad you’re still with us
Mickey always seems to come off as a genuinely nice guy, every time I see anything with him on.
I met him once and he IS a genuinely nice guy!
I also met him. Other than my friend Lennie Baker from sha na na , Micky Dolenz was very nice. Very down to earth. And I've met alot of celebrities casually.
I have met Micky on a few occasions; most recently, a couple of weeks ago. He is definitely a genuinely kind and down-to-earth person.
I still teared up with Davy & Peter gone. Still love The Monkee's Band and the songs.
And now Mike...
RIP Peter Tork the bassist 1942-2019
Good old Mickey. Such warmth and dignity when in such shock.
Mickey Dolenz was always a class act as well as being a seriously good if underrated singer. I hope he takes the time to enjoy life to the fullest between tours with Nez. Take it easy Mickey. You've earned it friend.
you never know when your time is up. he had fun while he was here and brought joy to a lot of people!!! thanks Davey
I loved The Monkees and the Beatles and still do. I had a huge crush on Micky. In the early 70s I started a fan club for Micky. I somehow got connected with his grandmother Mene Johnson. I wrote her all the time. She was a sweetheart. I also wrote Micky. He was so nice. Wrote his sister Coco ans his wife at the time Sammi. A lot of love between Micky and his grandma. TheMonkees were put down a lot re their music...but people need to remember they were hired to play musicians in a tv show...they were not given a fair deal. I still love them!!!

at that time, pop groups weren't valued much--so many people were in line to do it--it took time for the music industry to mature and get smart, that happened in the 70s and continues to the present day--music biz is truly an industry-and you are groomed, packaged, promoted etc, to extract all the money possible from the public--you have a lifespan and suddenly it ends--usually when you can't sell records anymore, or your bookings drop off--ever notice how much country music today sounds almost all the same no matter who sings it? you don't see too much originality out there, one rare case is Kacey Musgraves from TX, Dixie Chicks were great --they might return eventually to the charts, and Jack Ingram, Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison--all from TX--these folks are great and rarely get on radio--so sad
what a great story ! worth telling.thanks.Mine was Mike Nesmith and my little 4 - year old cousin's was David, of course, influenced by my Monkeemania !!
Davy's death hit Micky hard. Anyone who claims they weren't friends is full of crap.
i'm sure it hit all of them hard
The were l8ke bothers
They were all friends. Just like most bands
(Crying) if you're reading this..Mr.Dolenz..(Crying) I still miss Mr.Jones..too.
Mike said in an interview he and Peter were never friends. That made me sad.
Sad loss, and still so young at 66. RIP.
With all due respect to Davy, Micky is so underrated as a vocalist!
I really don't if Micky is underrated as a vocalist because both he and Davy shared the lead singer duties of the Monkees. Additionally, he also had a wider vocal range: he was more of a tenor and could hit higher notes; Davy was more of a baritone. RIP Davy Jones
Totally agree.
Just had to learn and sing pleasant valley Sunday. Amazing voice.
Micky has an amazing voice! The best singer of the band, hands down.
Absolutely! I don’t think Davy could have sung “Goin’ Down’ or ‘Aunty Griselda’! But Davy was great of course!
Micky is so real something people should learn these days
sad, happy wonderful speech for a friend very heart warming
i went to an autograph session a couple years which he,Michael and Peter were at. From my experience i found Mickey to be the most polite and down to earth of the 3 surviving Monkees after Davy died. i had never met Davy in an autograph session but from what i heard both him and Mickey were the most polite Monkees members of all.
I think it all depends on how tired each are and where and when you meet them. Everyone has bad days. My encounters were Mike and Peter being super nice to me. (Peter spending about 20 minutes chatting), mike being a perfect gentleman. Micky at another time signed an autograph without saying a word to me and Davy signed one without looking at me or speaking. But like I said, everyone has bad days.
That was a good interview. Mom and I were so shocked (like other people probably were) when we heard about Davy's death. We got to see Davy, Micky and Peter in their anniversary concert in the '80s. We couldn't believe that they started the tour in our city! Nobody like that ever comes here!
Micky was always my favorite! I am now 53 and I remember " The Monkees"...Classic times!
Nicky Depaola - Micky was really great but I loved them all and the fun they brought to Music - so glad I had those days, happy, happy :-)
I am almost 63. I remember when the show came on, I loved it. Micky was also my favorite. I had such a crush on him! He has aged well.
I remember the day I spent a couple hours with Davy for my 19th birthday in St. Louis. He was such a gentleman. I also met Micky that day too. Best day ever. I saw Davy before he died and he remembered me. AWESOME. I met Peter about 7 years ago. Got a pic with him. He was very cool.
"Last Train to Clarksville", 'I'm a Believer", "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone", "She" and "Words" et al... such great tunes. Simpler times to just be a kid.
In a total of 9 years we lost 3 Monkees. Rip Davy, Peter and Mike
I was what would be called a 3rd generation fan, I think--when they had the 20th anniversary reunion during the 1980s. I'd thought that it was like, magic. I'd see the Monkees--as a trio--nine times in concert between 1986-2011 and Davy perform solo twice as well as meeting him in person twice. Davy presented himself as warm and genuine and that he truly loved and appreciated his fans. Not taking anything away from his band mates, he performed in concert with such energy, enthusiasm and interaction with the audience that one could mistake him for a person half his age--when he performed with Micky and Peter about 6 months before his passing, Davy was literally running around the stage! I think that this incredible energy and as Micky said, no indication of illness, really was what was shocking about Davy's death. Because I'd met him, this was very hard to believe that he was gone...I'd cried for months. Rest in peace David Thomas Jones..."I'll love you forever."
I loved the Monkees. Those were good times BACK then.
He looks like he's going to cry right at the end. Poor Micky, he lost a good, dear friend.
Randi Brooks
I met them in Memphis during a concert, all wonderful. Miss you Davy.
Loved you guys when I was a teenager- you guys had the best songs and your TV show made me so happy!! Very positive themes. You were very unique- you produced top notch music without all of the irritating ego that came with rock music in those days.
Great talent died way to young the Monkees my childhood memories brilliant
I had a huge crush on Davy Jones. I was a theatre student at Michigan State University during the time of the Monkeys and trust me they were much loved my the students of the Theatre Department. We had a TV in the lower floor of the Theatre building and it was automatically set to the Monkees every night of broadcast. We were all fans and the Monkees were well loved.
So very sad, he died much too soon
He was such a beautiful soul
I seen Davy Jones & Micky perform but not together! Davy came to the fair & I had played my tambourine in the autograph line! I had played exactly like Davy & while in the line Davy & all of the band member kept watching me!!!!!!!!!! When I reached Davy he asked me "Where did you learn how to play????" I said, "I taught myself!!!!" HE said, ""WOW GIRL YOUR GREAT!!" DAVY SIGNED MY TAMBOURINE!!! This was about 6 years ago!! Now in 2016 I saw Micky at The Casino in Turtle Lake!! Both guys had a wonderful show!!! Micky is so down to earth..just a swell guy!!!!! I liked them both..But OH YES.Davy was my very Favorited!! Daisy Mae
They were all talented!! I loved t hem God bless them all! Gave me happy vibes as a kid & even now!!!! Long live the monkees!!!
Very nice of Mickey to do this!! That couldn't have been easy!!
Davy was my favorite. I watched the Monkees reruns on Nickelodeon as a kid with my Mom. She was a Mickey fan.
Thanks Micky, the thing I remember most is the four Monkees together back in the mid sixties. I have to thank you and all four Monkees, You all gave me a lot of good laughs and memories. I'm sorry for the loss of Davy, But I'm glad for the remainder of the group. I hope to meet you some day.
I Loved Davy Jones! I always will.
What a great Guy...thanks Micky
Of all the Monkees i think everybody was crazy in love with Davy Jones. He was so cute. All the girls were crazy about him. I know i will miss him. He will be always a Monkee.
Micky looked so crestfallen at the beginning of the interview. I could only imagine how he was feeling.
Davy was my first love. I was in fourth grade when the show premiered, and I fell head over heels for him. I saw them in concert twice as an adult. At one concert, I had second-row seats, and Davy actually winked at me. I almost fainted.
Michael Nesmith wrote a long piece about it on his Facebook page when Davy died and Peter did a tv interview as well as wrote something on his FB about it.
as a youngster I loved the show and the band.
Now Micky is the only one..
R.I.P. Michael Nesmith 😢
I'm very thankful we still have Micky
A Great Band, RIP Davy.
I loved The Monkees and Micky and Davy were always my favourite. 💕❤️
Marvelous interview, such great times.
My wife and I watched the Monkees as kids in the early 80's. We've both loved their music and show. Now IFC is airing re-run shows that our 16yr old & 12yr old are now getting to watch and love. Thank you Guys for a great show. We'll all miss Davy. God Bless.

Thats' good that the two were such close friends.
Gotta like Micky. Such a genuinely nice man - and always interesting.
Davy and Mickey !
The voice of the Monkees !
Even though Mike Nesmith's wasn't bad either !
R.I.P Davey Jones
The Monkees..... deserve to be in the HOF !!!
Esta banda fez parte de minha infância, sou fã fico muito contente que até hoje eles continuaram a fazer shows pena que David e o Peter já faleceram mas para mim sempre serão a melhor banda de todos os tempos .The Monkees.
I always loved the Monkees! Mickey was my favorite then, Peter, Davey then Mike. They were a great example for young talented musicians and families. They rock over the Beatles. They weren't about themselves. I love you guys! So sorry for your dearest friend Davey..he has always been loved by so many people! God Bless You All!
Oh I know the story about how The Monkees came about...you don't need to tell me the story about the Beatles either...I know that one too!! I loved the Beatles too...but as for fun actors and real people & musically talented, I pick The Monkees before The Beatles.
I grew up with them both! Thanks for the FYI.......Haha I m ahead of you there.....
Born in 72 but remembered them on TV reruns in the 70s.They had actually 4 or 5 really good songs.R.I.P. tithe three that have moved on and stay strong Mickey.
PASSED TOO YOUNG
At least he talks about the family and how the death was unexpected unlike the interview with Peter
True, but Peter was respectful and their relationship (Davy & Peter) was more a working relationship than friends. He and Davy butted heads at times (literally), and they had some contentions, but that doesn't make either one a bad guy.
As far as not talking about the family like Micky-how could he? He was not Micky and they didn't make personal visits to each others family.
We don't always get a best friend level relationship from work, and this was no different. Peter kept it simply as 'I have varying degrees of love and respect for all of those guys', so don't expect more than what it was from Peter, and that is being genuine.
So first ask: what would I say about someone I worked with for a few years 40+ years ago, knowing the above reality? Would you candy coat things and pretend it was just like the TV show? or show the class Peter did by keeping it real, simple yet still respectful?
It's true that it was John Lennon, whom was the big fish for the Beatles.
@KV-85 контрмера I agree, and Rachel was gushing and giggling like a schoolgirl, which was very out of place considering the subject was Davy's recent death.
@KV-85 контрмера Well, sadly Peter had some conflicts with Davy and Micky on their tours. Peter had beaten his alcohol addiction and he said he found it hard to be in the road with Davy and Micky, who he said were drinking a lot. I suspect Peter and Davy might have had professional disagreements as well in terms of how to present the music.
No disrespect to Davy, just repeating Peter's comments.
Call me crazy but it sounds like Micky retains his young voice.
Adam Swindell ikr! He kinda sounds the same
true!!! verbatim
Each of the Monkees had talent, looks and tons of personality! They were all real professionals because if they didn't get along, they didn't make a big deal out of it or show it! Naturally some of them will be closer ...that's just how people are! I especially liked Mike's talent and humor in all his works, Mickey's lovely voice, comic wackiness and showmanship, and Davy's voice, looks and comedy ! Of course they were all very cute and good looking ! Peter was just adorable and great with his musical talent and love his moves! that boy can dance! lol...well he's not a boy anymore but he's still talented!
Fun fact: When casting for the original Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry wanted a Davey Jones type actor to play Pavel Chekov.
I miss you DAVY!💓😭😭😭RIP
They continue to make me smile
Loved the Monkees & there music, Davy Jones. R I P.
I loved watching them. Saw Mickey, Peter and Michael in Houston with my sister. It was her last concert.
My Respects....The guy OBVIOUSLY^ cared...
Yes!!
+hadlockjudith I agree moreso then peter tork did. but i will leave that alone. at least mickey felt some love for davy.
About what?
i had a dear friend and my moms best friend who did the same thing .she had no health problems. she died a month after my mom did, so you never can tell
Thank you, Micky--strange to see you so serious--clear that you were close with Davy. God bless you and your beautiful daughter!
Mickey with the other Monkees were so much Fun.Thank you for the happy memories, Mickey Davey Mike & Peter.🥰🇬🇧☮️
i sobbed thank you for your time
Love these guys and always will.
Great interview
Such a shame miss you Davy Jones .
I was 12.I LOVED him.So sad!
+saffy blu I was your age and I watched the show before it was replaced by Green Acres during the summer of my 13th birthday year when it was on Nick At Nite's annual Summer Block Party event. It was Monkee Monday and then it became Green Acres Monday. It somehow sucked!
I saw him at Disney World right before he died. Lost all my pictures😢
I REMEMBER THEM WELL. I WAS SO YOUNG AND NOW I AM SO OLD.
a WORD TO THE WISE, DON'T GET OLD. IS NOT WHAT IT'S SUPOSSED TO BE.
Amen. I'm old too, and it sucks.
Break out the Monkee albums and play 'em loud!
Mucky and Davy...very nice voices ...(singing)

I loved the Monkees when I was a kid. They did not get the credit from pop critics that they deserved.
Rip in peace lots of good movies tv. Music a good run we will miss you
oh man, his face watching the pre roll. Heartbreaking. Peter gone now too. Bless Mickey and Mike in 2021
I remember when I watched them my Dad would watch them too. He enjoyed them.
Went to a Monkees concert in Seattle, WA when I was 13. It was pandemonium but wonderful too. After the concert I learned my mom and aunt briefly interacted with the Monkees outside the auditorium.
R.I.P. Davy 😭
Wow. I just saw this. classy guy. RIP Davy Jones.

Good interview respect
(Crying) I don't know..if Mr.Dolenz cried..when he found out that Davy Jones died..but..me...(CRYING) JC! I'm still crying over his(Crying)
This is so sad. I loved them ❤💯
R. I. P. David. We. Will. Miss you.
Last time I saw Jones was when he and his "locker" made an appearance on SpongeBob.
If I'm not mistaken, when Mike Nesmith "re-joined" the Monkees after Davy passed, when they were preparing to get ready for a gig, Micky said he would look for Davy and then he'd realize he wasn't there and would never be there again. Very sad. I'd met Davy in person about 2 or 3 times; he came across as someone who was warm-hearted and loved and appreciated his fans. I cried for many months after he died; I think after seeing him with Micky and Peter perform and especially after meeting him, it was extremely hard to accept that Davy had died.
RIP Davy...always the original "Daydream Believer."
I agree it hit him very hard you could hear it in his voice cracking when he was doing a memorial so especially daydream believer
Micky: What you were to us were four boys we could like because you all were sweet, innocent, and safe. And you always will be in our eyes....
Great interview thank you the circus boy corky great as always!!
Yep,back in the 60's The Monkees were IT!I remember buying these packs of cards with a stick of gum inside and the cards were photo cards and on the back was a piece to a puzzle of a much larger picture you could make and you'd have to try and get the cards you were missing constantly. You'd get like 5 cards in a pack or something.Just something I remember is all.Good times back then.
I remember those cards... I still have two packs unopened... Wouldn’t let them go for anything... STILL have the gum inside...
This was published the day after he died. He may have been in denial/shock. Sometimes it takes people a bit of time for true sadness to sink in.
