  • Peter Tork of the Monkees, Dead at 77
He was the oldest member of the band. Just 24 when the Monkees phenomenon started in 1966. Though compared and meant to be in the same lane as the Beatles the Monkees were certainly a different animal but that's not to say they didn't leave an incredible mark on Rock-and-roll.
They set up the Monkees with Tork on bass alongside singer-songwriter Michael Nesmith, played guitar, with drummer Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones on lead vocals. The latter two were presented up front as lead singers even though all of them sang.
He was born Peter Halsten Thorkelson Feb. 13, 1942, in Washington, D.C... Both of his parents were folk music fans and bought him both a guitar and banjo when he was just a kid so Tork, however, was a musician long before the Monkees. He also played the piano. Before his fame, Tork played in coffee shops in New York City with the shortened last name of Tork.
Even though in the beginning they didn't write or play on their own songs outside the vocals. On their debut album simply titled “The Monkees' from October 1966 the group as a whole never play together with the exception of two tracks written and/or co-written by Michael Nesmith where Tork also plays guitar. Tork told CBS news that producer Don Kirshner, discouraged the band to even be in the studio during the recording leaving most of it to studio musicians like the wrecking crew.
In spite of that or maybe because of it the Monkees soared. Their likeability on TV was huge. That show only last 2 seasons from 1966 to 1968 but there was a hunger for that Beatle-like hijinks that was inspired by the Fab fours “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Help!,” Tork was the silly on - a self-professed dummy on the show which was an act but a lovable one at that. He always had that confused smile when he didn't get what was happening in the room. He once told the New York Times the emotional age of the Monkees was 13.
They had over 10 Top 40 hits including, “(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone” and “A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You' from 1966, "Pleasant Valley Sunday" the following year and their #1 hits 1966's "Last Train to Clarksville,” and Neil Diamond's “I'm a Believer” plus “Daydream Believer” in 67.
In 2016, while touring with the Monkees Tork told the Telegraph, “This is not a band. It’s an entertainment operation whose function is Monkees music, It took me a while to get to grips with that but what great music it turned out to be! And what a wild and wonderful trip it has taken us on!”
Tork was involved with many Monkees reunions. When Jones died in 2012 Nesmith who was usually hesitant to rejoin got back into the fold for their 50th-anniversary tour.
Tork's death was announced originally on the band Facebook book page. He was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that affected his tongue in 2009. - by John Beaudin

I don't care what anybody says. Peter tork and the Monkees rocked the sixties better than any other American band. Regardless of how they were formed. They stayed true to who they were they gave us countless hours of joy and love

The Monkees belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So what if they were a TV band. They had more fans, were more iconic, outsold and had more hits than most acts that are already in the Hall.

You miss the point, George. As Torkee was quoted, they WEREN'T a band..they were an entertainment operation! None of them were accomplished musicians. Mike wrote a couple decent songs and Micky and, to a lesser degree, Davy could sing..but HALL OF FAME?? Get TF out of here.

I am CRUSHED right now. Absolutely DEVASTATED! I turned 42yrs old the day after Peters 77th birthday. I was introduced to The Monkees at the age of 8yrs by my father watching re-runs. I was hooked immediately and have been a proud "Monkee Junkee" for 34 years. I'm so very thankful that I was able to see them in concert before even the passing of Davy Jones. R.I.P Peter Tork and my heart goes out to his family and to all those who loved him

Peter Tork was visably aging the last few years. You could hear it in his voice where he started to sound like an old man. Its shocking as you grow over 60 like me and remember these guys in their prime and its like overnight and these people are elderly. Time is a tricky thing and young people have no idea how fast it goes.

I agree...the Monkees are forever frozen in our memories as young...when I saw them in the 90s on tour, I genuinely thought Mickey Dolenz was going to sing "we're the old generation..and we've got something to say"....of course he didn't...I was very shocked at Davey Jones's passing as he just was so youthful looking....and yes, when did we get old all of a sudden?

Ouch! Yet another hit, right in the childhood. This getting old stuff is for the birds. My grandma used to say the worst part of aging is watching everything you loved die. She wasn't kidding. I'll admit it, a tear or three comes when my faves die, and Peter got three. RIP.

    • @birdsfan57
      @birdsfan57 5 лет назад

Yes, 7:30 on Monday nights. I would usually stay for dinner at my friend's house that night so we could watch the show together. Her family had one of those big color TV/stereo combo units (which, at that time, cost a small fortune, but today wouldn't even scratch the surface of the price for a new IPhone), and it was quite the treat watching them in color, as my family could only afford a black and white set. Used to bring my Monkees albums over to her house to play them on that stereo unit. The best times for two 11 year old girls who were just crazy about the Monkees. My heart is broken today, as it was 7 years ago when Davy died, as another part of my 60's childhood (which was THE BEST) is, again, gone.

Peter and the rest of the band the Monkees were a real group of singers and musicians that have gotten a bad rap. I remember watching their show on TV and liking their music. "Headquarters" came out and was climbing the charts and was headed for best LP of the year, bur the Beatles came out with Sgt Pepper and the rest is history. Pete, and Davey are gone but the memory of them will live on in their music. Thanks guys for the music.

How can anyone not love The Monkees as a group but also individually, too? Peter - so talented, friendly, able to laugh a lot, a good actor - convincing as "the dumb one" of the band, yet probably the smartest one in the band. Check out his Shoe Suede Blues Band = excellent. I saw him in concert. He said, "Take all the videos and pictures you want and be sure to post them on youtube so they will be there when I'm gone".....RIP Peter. You will be missed. Send our love to Davy. ♡

Nothing quite reminds us of our own mortality as the passing of our entertainment "idols" from our childhood. I had a friend growing up who was the worlds biggest Monkee fan as a kid, had everything possible with a Monkee logo for a kid to get in a small midwestern town. He died just a few hours after Davy which was both sad and somehow fitting. It's good to hear others of my age group talking about growing up with their music and lighthearted attitude.

I remember watching every show on Mondays at 7:00 pm on channel NBC-4 never missed a single show not even the reruns. My friend and I used to write fan letters to Tiger Beat magazine. I had posters of The Monkees all over my bedroom walls(with DAVY JONES being my favorite) . I had also bought every single record they made. Finally seeing them in concert. Peter was great on the show and a talented musician (as most Monkee fans know both he and Nesmith were the true musicians of the group). Although I have no respect for the sham institution known as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , the Monkees should have been voted in there awhile back. They were certainly hugely influential to a lot of people regardless of the band's origin.

The prefab four as some of the critics used to call the Monkees. I watched the show when it first came on in 1966, and I enjoyed it very much. It was good, lighthearted fun. At the time I didn't know whether any of the members were legitimate musicians, but I didn't care. I did know that other artists wrote some - if not all - their hit songs. They were entertaining and now the second member of the group has died. R.I.P. Peter Tork.

It was a great concert, attended by fans of all ages, and made even more festive by the fact that Mickey, Mike and Peter played in a theatre in the Chicago area on the evening of the day the Chicago Cubs finally won the World Series for the first time since 1908. The guys sounded just like they did in the old days.

Interesting juncture--- in 2004, I was living on a sailboat docked at Marina del Rey CA, and decided to walk up to the nearest restaurant/ lounge with live music.
Turns out the band was one Peter played guitar in , locally.
After their first break,I went up and shook Pete's hand and chatted for a minute. Very humble, down-to- earth gentleman. What an iconic " happenstance" of a blessing.lol.
The fact that I'd actually meet one of those Monkees I listened to as child..😌..awesome.
    God rest his soul!

Speaking for myself, it is not so much who wrote the lyrics or even the melody, it is who got the songs on the radio and into our hearts. Peter Tork and the Momkees!

I met Peter when he played with his band several years ago at a small club called "The Bamboo Room". He was so generous with his time and that night, he played Guitar, Banjo, Keyboards, etc. and played them well. RIP Peter Tork

Oh man!!! This is sooo sad. I remember watching their show. I never missed it. I hope that Peter and Davey met up right away. Have to keep telling myself that we are all getting older and one by one the really cool guys from the really good bands are dying off. We might have a few people out there that can make music but not many good ones. Thank God we lived in the best of times. ✌🏻❤

It's sad he has passed. The one concert I never got to see. My sister and I had tickets to see the Monkees in 66 in Milwaukee but it was cancelled due to the segregated riots. Peter was my sisters favorite and Davy was mine. Now they're both gone. R.I.P Peter, you gave us great music and fun and love. He'll be missed.

Wow! I'm from Milwaukee, & remember that like it was yesterday! My aunt was going to take me to see The Monkees, but the "riots" as we called them back then, happened. I was heartbroken. I got to see them many years later, at the State Fair. Minus Michael, of course. I missed seeing him, but seeing my favorite guy Davy was worth it. It's hard to believe Davy & Peter are gone. It sucks getting older. May they rest in peace. 💔💔😭😭😞😞👼👼 Blessings to you & your sister.
