I also think there's a strong element of not being able to relate to your parents' generation's expectations, choices and priorities, and in that sense it is also a strong generational thing. Also, capitalism isn't only built and maintained by the grotesquely wealthy (although they are of course its fiercest defenders and greatest beneficiaries). My parents are pretty left-leaning, but it's a chore to try to express my dread of the future to them. They just can't comprehend things ever getting worse (or, for that matter, people like themselves being complicit in the catastrophe to come in their own small ways), you know what I mean?
