- An American Airlines plane and an Army helicopter collided Wednesday night near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. NBC News is reporting that figure skaters were on board the flight. NBC cited a U.S. Figure Skating statement as saying: "These athletes, coaches and family members were returning home from the National Development Camp held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas." Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser and authorities said first responders from across the region are conducting a rescue operation in dark and cold conditions.

Reading all the “no VIPs” on the helicopter or in the crash in DC and seeing it on the media just breaks my heart.

Such a terrible tragedy. The people who were waiting at the airport to pick up their loved ones, the pilots on the other planes who witnessed it happen, and the emergency responders... There are no words. My heart goes out to all affected.

My fear is there will be no survivors due to the mid air explosion and the hyperthermia from the water. I'm praying for a miracle.
First off an explosion happened immediately taking the lives of all people.the explosion takes away oxygen and the shock wave too is very violent..plus yes the waters cold too and if anybody has survived they'd probably succumb to hypothermia..doubtful and survivors.. sorry
The professionals have been saying with the water temp being 35° it's unlikely for the victims to survive due to hypothermia after 30+ mins. Even divers in wetsuits are limited on their time spent in the water because of it.
It's been roughly 10+ hours. Not much hope to hold onto but I do hope I'm wrong about those still missing and they've found a way.
After 30 minutes in 35°F water, hypothermia would have set in. 😢

This is absolutely devastating. I was a former crew member for the airline and I was based in DC. I’m just not understanding why or how. My prayers go out to the passengers and their families and my former colleagues.

I'm not far from Wichita, and grew up in southern PA, spending a lot of time in DC, my dad worked in DC, so this hits close to home in a couple ways. I found out about 20 minutes ago we had a local woman and her husband on the flight. Rest in peace Lori and Bob.

There is a military airport just across the river where the heli took off. Standard procedure, but the crew in the heli appeared to be too high at the time and most likely didn't see the plane as they got closer to them.

You all must not watch plane crash videos. These things dont happen often, but they do happen. And for many reasons. Many things led up to this disaster. It wasn't just one single mistake. They're investigating it. Calm down.

Because helicopters take off and land at airports everyday all over the country??? That is not abnormal. Military aircraft are not exclusive to military bases, they can and do land at civilian airports regularly for training and refueling. The question is what chain of errors led to this collision, who is at fault and what made them make those decisions. There are lots of factors involved.

There's a military base nearby and they commonly cross that runway. They were told to maintain visual with the crj and cross behind it. They didn't for some reason.

The hecliopter pilot confirmed visual of the aircraft TWICE and he asked for visual separation and he alone was responsible for adhering to that or declaring loss of contact. They are 100% and fault. Student pilots do stupid stuff like this. Impossible not to see a commercial airliner crossing in front of you at night and at the same altitude…with two pilots in that helicopter looking out VFR night. The military owns this one.

Much higher chance of dying in a car accident even if it isn’t your fault and you’re the best driver in the world. The last deadly commercial plane accident was in 2009 so you dying on a flight this is very very very very rare.
You have higher odds getting struck by lightning and or getting killed on the way to the airport. Idk if that helps ease your anxiety over flying but the news tends to bring fear in us.

this is why I hate flying, and the 1st time I was on a smaller airplane, I was closing my eyes, holding onto dear life, and begging God not to let me die in a plane accident. Probably because it’s NOT the smartest, it’s advanced but probably not smart. It more than likely doesn’t have TCAS which all civilian planes have, the helicopter is military so there isn’t a reason for it to have it. TCAS being the system that warns pilots of potential collisions when you’re in the path of another plane.

I remember there was another Blackhawk crash that took the lives of everyone on board fairly recently. Maybe it was 2 helis that struck each other? Either way, it's a horrible tragedy

Based on the video - the weather and temperature - if they have not found any more survivors - this is now a recovery operation. As a former recovery/rescue diver. I am sadden by this. This will very difficult for the divers. 😢😢😢😢😢
