I like this rogue a lot because it allows you to dig deep into the DM's plots. As long as you have a DM that enjoys and rewards you taking the time to learn about and understand the story, this is one of the best rogues to play. Just one little shout out, it's good to take the Observant feat for this subclass.

I was just putting together a new character for a new campaign I'm playing in tonight set in Sharn in Eberron as an Inquisitive Rogue and was wondering if you guys had made a video on this subclass when I suddenly received an email saying you posted this video. Excellent timing and great work on the video as always.

Eye for weakness adds 3d6 additional sneak die to the target of your insightful fighting feature. The level you gain this feature you are at 9d6 from your base class. This is 12d6 for an average of 42 damage just from your sneak attack and features. An additional 8.5-9.5 damage is likely from your finesse weapon and dexterity modifier.
50.5 to 51.5 damage per successfully hit is nice reliable damage that cost almost no resources.
This can feature can be utilized at range of sight thanks to insightful fighting not having a range limit. Then make the most of that with any ranged weapon.
That extra sneak damage would add up on reaction attacks too.
I find that the inquisitive makes an excellent hunter build. Rogues can hide as a bonus action, move great distances with their bonus action, this one can search with its bonus action, and line up its sneak attack with a bonus action while alone and at range. The outlander background takes care of foraging in the wild, expertise can be dedicated to stealth, perception, insight, and survival. Should be able to track down almost anything AND effectively take it out. Or run away when it goes wrong :)
Insightful fighting also gives this rogue a better chance to survive if it gets caught alone by multiple creatures.

I love this subclass. Made a very lovecraftian lowkey-crazy investigator. That and Haunted One backstory makes it so so fun to roleplay.

I'm leveling up an inquisitive rogue for a while. I plan to write a small guide/commentary about it at some point. I enjoy a lot playing it, but it definitely has problems.
As relevant strengths, it's the highest perception without MC of the game, specially with observant. At high levels your passive perception is impenetrable. Having also high saves in Dex and Wis is quite strong at high levels. But the best is flexibility. You can apply SA in melee and ranged easily, all the time. Inquisitive can be very tactical, because it doesn't need an ally to attack.
Lvl3 skills are all solid if player and DM want to work on that. Lvl9 and 13 require improvements. I suggest to tweak them a little bit to make them more impactful and enjoyable. With that said, it's not a top10 subclass of 5e, but reliable and much better than what people write in forums.

I have recently started to play an Inquisitive rogue in a new campaign where we all started at lvl 6.
I went variant human and took the observant feat. Dumped strength, and 10 in charisma. Stats at lvl 6 are : -
    Str 8 / Dex 18 / Con 12 / Int 14 / Wis 14 / Cha 10
I took expertise in Insight, Investigation, Perception, Stealth. Passive perception is 23, pretty much guaranteed sneak attack on any target I want in combat, regardless of what the rest of the party is doing, which gives them more freedom to be more creative with their combat tactics, and is a huge amount of huge to role-play as a Sherlock Holmes type character. You have +13 to Investigation and Perception rolls, and +8 on your Insight rolls which are really nice bonuses which only increase over time. Once you get reliable talent, your minimum roll for Investigation or Perception will be around 25...
I think the thing you are missing, is that most campaigns rarely last longer than 12-13 lvl, and so Ear for Deceit is really useful. Even when you get Reliable Talent, you will still have been able to detect lying much much earlier in the campaign, which increases your value as an Investigator.
With the GM, I've created a backstory where my char is the guy the GuildMaster brings in to investigate internal security problems, or to find out if a merchant is skimming profits. Really fun to play and a great asset to the party both in and out of combat. The thing I like is that it's not an OP subclass, but if you want to play a particular style of rogue, you can learn really heavily into it.

  • @Oniphire
    @Oniphire 4 года назад +2

I've played a niche but fun Inquisitive whip wielder. Insightful Fighting lets you sneak attack anyone under almost any circumstances so combine that with high mobility, the whip's 10' range, and Booming Blade and dominate 5' reach opponents, especially ones with nasty melee abilities like paralysis. Booming Blade a melee target who is outside of melee range from any other target, drop a few d6s and d8s of damage on them, and if they move to get into melee range they take even more damage. If they want to avoid the extra damage they'll have to stay where they are and out of melee range. Since you were never within 5' you likely won't need to disengage which leaves your bonus action free for dashing or whatever else you need to do. This does require the Spell Sniper feat to allow Booming Blade to match the whip's range but with how well Inquisitive pairs with clerics that's not problem.
As for your review you guys nailed it. The subclass is mediocre in combat and good in RP scenarios. Lying to an Inquisitive rogue is incredibly hard and since your character is probably going to take proficiency and expertise in Insight you'll always have an advantage when dealing with people. Since you should have good Wisdom that means the Perception super skill gets even better for you AND if you get to a high enough level to get Slippery Mind you'll have an even better Wisdom save.

Things I like about your channel: You don't fap about for 3-4 minutes talking about the thing you're about to talk about. You give an intro on the topic and then jump right in. Well done. You're also reading right from the material instead of paraphrasing things. This is good for clarity because the players will be reading exactly what you're reading.
I guess the only negative thing I can say is the sound quality. I understand that not everybody has the space for proper sound-absorbing stuff and to be honest, if this is the worst thing about your channel then you're doing the rest right! Good on you!

Why am I picturing this class as a bit of a snarky guy standing off to the side of the fight watching. But directing the fighter or whatever where and when to strike. Etc etc. Then when "well jump on into the fight if your feeling froggy!"
"No, no, no, (hands warding off the thought) I detest violence. And I wouldnt want to invade your fun..... oh watch your six"
Riggs and Murtaugh (Lethal Weapon) dynamic

I really like this subclass because rogues already come with a huge bag of tricks, and what this subclass does is really make you feel really different. Gives you a chance to really get into an enemies head and spend either a single combat or a whole campaign really unravelling the big bad. I think I enjoy the idea of getting psychological on a guys ass. But hey that's just me.

  • @HorrorMetalDnD

I enjoy playing my Tabaxi Inquisitive Rogue character. I tend to do more damage on average than my party’s frontline fighters, while I tend to stay in the back and attack with my shortbow. I almost always succeed my Insight checks for Insightful Fighting because I have a high wisdom and an expertise in Insight.
I’m thinking of either taking a 3 level dip into Ranger for Hunter or into Fighter for Battlemaster. Being able to deal extra damage with Hunter’s Mark and Colossus Slayer along with Sneak Attack is quite tempting, but some of those Battlemaster Maneuvers are also very tempting.

I am using this subclass for a kobald character named detective Hamilton snacktooth. I have made many characters who I like more such as Spider the mad scientist or Ashley the demonic demigod. But my DM outright said that this character is his favorite to DM for. He gets to set up complicated mysteries and challenge himself by trying to foil Hamilton's eye. This is one of the best role play characters to the point where he can't really effectively be in combat. I wasn't allowed to take him into a pvp arena 1 shot for example due to his min maxed stats for role playing making him a terrible fighter. Not to mention he gets a passive perception of 37 at 17th level. Thanks for the video!

How did you manage to get a 37 passive perception? The highest I've been able to get is 32. 20 wisdom, expertise in perception and the observant feat got my druid to 32.

It’s definitely a subclass more for roleplay, but there are ways to make a powerful combat character with this subclass. Having a good Wisdom score and at least a decent Intelligence score are best for this kind of build.
I’d consider taking the Observant Feat for the +5 to Passive Perception and Passive Investigation. Taking a couple of levels in Monk and/or the Mobile Feat might help make Steady Eye easier to use in combat.
City-based campaigns and dungeon-based campaigns would be where a build like this can shine the brightest, especially if you take a background like Urban Bounty Hunter or City Watch/Investigator.
You’ll want an expertise in Insight for sure. Stealth, Perception, and Investigation would likely be your other expertises.

    • @thekaijusleeps
      @thekaijusleeps Год назад

I took the Urban Bounty Hunter background for mine and took Observant at Lvl 4, will most likely take Mobile on my next ASI.
I took Expertise in Acrobatics over Stealth, since I plan on swapping between long-range and skirmisher combat and already have some nifty items to help me with Stealth checks.
This is my first Rogue that I'm playing and I'm already having a lot of fun with him; he's the Bloodsport to the rest of my party's zany Suicide Squad and I absolutely love it 😂

I actually play as an inquisitive rogue. Only just reached level 8, so I can't say anything about higher level features, but My experience so far:
-Ear for deceit is moderately useful. The redundancy with reliable talent is unfortunate, but you do get a whole 8 levels before it becomes a problem, which is probably the overwhelming majority of the campaign. That having been said, it should probably give you a minimum roll of 10 like the eloquence college bard gets with persuasion and deception checks, and should probably apply to all social insight checks.
-Eye for detail is situationally useful. Investigation checks in combat are almost unheard of, though perception checks come up every now and then. The feature should probably just be worded to let you take the Search action as a bonus action.
-Insightful fighting is weird. It's very helpful every once in a while, but more often than not it gives me one turn of sneak attack I wouldn't otherwise get before an ally gets in range of the target. The DM has disallowed most optional features from Tasha's in this campaign, including steady aim, which does make insightful fighting a lot more useful than it could be if steady aim was an option. It's also helpful in situations where you don't have anything to hide behind. Still, considering this feature is the primary reason I chose to play as a rogue in the first place, it's been somewhat underwhelming. One good thing it has going for it is that with expertise in insight, insightful fighting nearly always works.
-While I haven't gotten steady eye yet, it comes on only two levels before reliable talent, which makes it largely irrelevant.

He is tasked with finding the cult of the broken Scythe and discovering their plans his skills and bonuses will help him so much due to this subclass now I do understand it is purely circumstantial but still it will be fun to be anyone I want to gain information and evaluate if I'm being told the truth or not

I wonder what you would give a 5 stars. I think the inquisitive should at least get 4 for roleplaying ability. I think the capstone ability is fantastic. Is it the most powerful one shot ability like Hurl Through Hell? No, but it is 3d6 damage that has ongoing use instead of limited use. In my opinion, that makes it better. There is no fear in wasting it for any situation. I just do more damage. The same goes for its level 3 abilities. You dismissed the importance of Insightful Fighting and Ear for Deceit. Let's start with Ear for Deceit. Your complaint was, at 11th level when the rogue gets reliable talent, it overrides this ability. This is true but, most campaigns go from 1-10. Some will get to 12-15, but very few get to level 20. This means the majority of a rogues career, he won't have access to Reliable Talent. So being able to automatically roll at least an 8 on your checks is pretty good. Now for Insightful Fighting. You dismissed this ability because rogues have multiple ways to use sneak. Granted that's true but, I've seen plenty of encounters where a rogue don't get to use sneak because, 1. you can't hide in a fight most times. 2. Rogues might not have an opportunity to attack an enemy that's next to one of their friends. For example flying creatures, or creatures using ranged attacks usually pose a problem with rogues and their sneak attack. Being able to just look at a creature and determine a way to use sneak is huge.

The main problem I have with the Inquisitive is that a lot of their abilities aren't really a huge improvement over the base Rogue. You can already play a very attentitive/inquisitive character by simply playing any Rogue and taking Expertise in the Investigation and Perception skills - and you can do so from level 1 !
This is not to say that the Inquisitive doesn't expand on that or that the subclass isn't very flavorful and useful in more cerebral campaigns - and if you want to play the subclass and/or love it, more power to you - it's just that most of their abilities would, ironically, be more useful on a class that isn't already trying to be *the* skills expert.
