That era of Billy Martin, Earl Weaver, Sparky Anderson, Tommy Lasorda, Chuck Tanner, Whitey Herzog, and Don Zimmer... These guys made up a Golden Age of managers in baseball. Those of us who were lucky enough to live through that era were just spoiled.

My dad got me Billy’s autograph at some speakers event for work. I was young and did not understand how much history was behind this man. I threw it away at some point. I deeply regret it. He was a baseball genius.

I had a high school teacher who told me how he was once at a restaurant after a Yankee game in Cleveland and Billy Martin was there. He found out from the bartender what Billy was drinking and ordered him one and brought it over to him. He told Billy he just wanted to buy him a drink and was about to walk away. Billy ordered him to sit down and they chatted for a while.

My father brought me to a banquet dinner paid for by his company when I was eleven years old back in 1980. The three celebrity guests were Roger Maris, Billy Martin and Mickey Mantle. The room was fifty percent fathers and fifty percent their young children. The night began and was going well. But about two hours in Billy and Mickey were getting plastered and things started getting loud. Three hours in Mantle was drunk as a skunk and he started telling very inappropriate jokes in front of us kids. Martin had that look on his face where you didn't know if he was joking or being serious. And all the while Maris didn't have one alcoholic beverage and was a perfect gentleman and easy to approach. I think he was getting embarrassed by the other two. Nothing crazy happened. Mantle cussed and told dirty jokes. Martin looked like he was ready for a fight. Maris told baseball stories and sat back shaking is head at the two. I do remember on the way home my father telling me "listen don't go telling everything you heard to your mother. As I'm writing this I pulled out a glossy black and white autographed picture of Mantle, Martin, Maris, my father and I. A couple of days later my friend, his father and I went to Yankee Stadium. Sometime during the game my friend and I got up and started to explore the ballpark. We walked past a door that said announcer's only. At that exact moment Mel Allen flung open the door sh*t faced as can be. It was just the three of us, no security whatsoever. He had a hard time just walking and stumbled past us mumbling to himself. I've always wondered if he was just on the air since he was leaving the announcer's box. Back then there was no Internet, no rebroadcast, no RUclips to listen to when we got home.

Mel always sounded pretty yeasty to me. No surprise he was getting hammered while on the air. As for Martin and Mantle, they were hopeless drunks with only two interests in life- baseball and booze. In Mickey's case, make that just booze. Maris always seemed like a level-headed guy.
Billy Martin was a legend I was at a Red Sox game at Fenway in the seventies and I got to talk to Billy Martin and Yogi they're both Legends even though I'm a Red Sox fan. Those were the days when baseball was baseball.

I assume you’re taking about 1974 Martin was over rated. Acquiring Ferguson Jenkins who won 25 games from the cubs and mark Hargrove won ROY.
They were also outscored In the regular season. Martin was only decent in New York.

Billy was right. It was a bad call and it wasn’t the 2nd base umpire’s play. But Meacham should’ve thrown to first when the first base umpire didn’t make the call.

Billy is deserving of the HOF as a manager. However, he has been vilified for so long (over 60 years now, since his playing days), it will never happen. That is a shame.

I feel sorry for you. I live in Fairfield County and was forced to watch that trash in the 70's. We got a breath of fresh air in 1978 when Cablevision added WSBK-TV 38 Boston and we got quality broadcasters but that was short lived when it was deleted in 1989 and we are still not allowed to watch NESN.
Yes I do you dope and WSBK was so much better than WPIX or any NY channel. Paul Newman called Bridgeport, CT the "Armpit of New England".

Dale Scott wrote in his book that he was the final umpire to toss Billy Martin.
Billy Martin was one of the most colorful characters in baseball history. A combination of baseball knowledge, grit and determination, and a fighting spirit, Billy was a fantastic manager but he could not manage his terrible temper. But his feisty and aggressive in ur face attitude always did him in and got him fired. He will always be remembered as a great manager and for his special brand of Billy Ball.
I think he was neither a good manager nor a good ball player. But he loved the game and was fierce in love with the Yankee club house. That made him some sort of a Yankee icon that still links him to the NYY fans to this day.

@@teller1290 Well, despite its fame, The 1950's Yankees ball club wasn`t a constellation of baseball stars. The teams they faced during that era had really good players like Eddie Matthews, Hank Aaron, Richie Ashburn, Duke Snyder, Juan Marichal, Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Warren Spahn, Gil Hodges, Don Drysdale, you named. Actually, Mickey Mantle and company were a bunch of drunks and party goers. Don Larsen, who pitched the only perfect game in the history of WS was lower than the average MLB pitcher. The Yankees were the best, not because they have the best players, but because they always managed to win agaisnt all odds.

Benefit: baseball now gets calls (usually) right.
Drawback: no more great manager/umpire fights like this.

I was spoiled at a very young age to grow up watching the best manager ever! Billy Martin had by far the greatest baseball mind, passion, and will to win of the past 50 years. This man transformed every team he ever managed into winners. Twins, Tigers, Yankees, A’s... From what I remember he was close to managing the Yankees again right before his death. I wonder how many more times him and George would have “danced.”
He also managed the Texas Rangers too, from 1973 to 1975.
Their relationship was as hot and cold as that of Liz Taylor and Richard Burton
Outside New York. He had one good season with Oakland and one with Minnesota. Losing record in Texas and he took over a Detroit team who had just won the World Series in ‘68. Wow hard to win there.

I went to highschool with his grandson and just gotta say the martins definitely got that sucker punch energy in their blood til this day
All Billy did was win wherever he went. Trouble seemed to follow him, but the truth of the matter is he hardly ever started anything, but he sure as heck finished it. RIP one of the great colorful characters of the game. I miss Billy, too.

Martin would always win initially, even when he took over a poor team. but then he would self destruct. In Oakland in early 80s he burned out the arms of the young pitchers he had. he was a raving alcoholic and brought on a lot of the trouble he got into. was a helluva manager though
What??? He had 2 great years with the Yankees in 76 and 77 and 1 great year with the Twins in 69. Then the rest of his career was blah with some good seasons and some bad. He ended up with a .553 win percentage for his career. Which comes out to 86 wins a year. Which is good, but not great

Why would he toss it to first? It was a low line drive, he caught it and he began to throw around the horn, like they always do.

Either way the video is too short to see the outcome of the decision. The first base ump should have the last say, even home plate ump had a better view than the 2nd base ump.

I can tell you from experience, there were several times where I caught a ball and wasn't 100 percent sure if it hit the ground. If you've played baseball at any level, you've had an instance where you caught the ball and didn't think you had, and trapped a ball when you think you've caught it. You see pros throw it to the base just in case all the time for reasons just like this.

Martin had one steadfast rule for his players -- do not drink in the same bar he is in after a game......because they will probably be fighting about something by the end of the night.
This was also an ABC Broadcast. Gary Bender & Joe Morgan, a game that would eventually get shown to the whole country because the Dodgers at Mets would get rained out. This must've been a cable broadcast which was shown to a scarce audience at the time. Im surprised they even allowed this common outlet.
Maybe because the Mets were on it's ABC outlet so locl viewers can still see the Yankees that night. Sounds like Ken "Hawk"Harrelson on a Yankees Broadcast team?
My dad and his brother were at the It club .. bit of words were exchanged with my uncle and Billy Martin. My dad got them both settled down. Later on, he would be hired to clean the family swimming pool for the A’s owner. Haas was nice to my dad; to this day that’s still talked about .
I miss Mr. Martin. When he got traded away from the Yankees in 1957, I think that helped the Braves win the World Series that season. I'm from Milwaukee and I ought to know.

This video was educational for me. It’s ok to kick dirt on an umpire, but picking dirt up and throwing it crosses the line.
It’s because:
You get Dirt on your shoes during the natural course of a ballgame. Billy kicking dirt is simply more dirt.
Whereas:
Picking up dirt and throwing is on someone’s sweater is a lot different: An umpire typically is not getting dirt on his sweater in the natural course of a ballgame.

Billy Martin had to be the most outrageous person in MLB history. In 1974 when he was manager of the Texas Rangers he was suspended for a few games. When a manager is under suspension I don't believe he is allowed to be in the dugout or in the club house. In one Rangers game while under suspension he walked into the dugout wearing a suit and tie and sunglasses. He then walked out onto the field and up to the pitchers mound to speak to Fergie Jenkins who was pitching that day. He was as controversial as they come.
If this happened today there would be a public outcry for Martin to resign, protesting etc etc. What a crappy world we live in today.

We all know how expensive rentals are in New York. For example, renting a handful of dirt for five seconds cost Billy Martin $5,000 (which George Steinbrenner probably paid, indirectly).
Billy Martin was the greatest baseball man in history.
Wish we could tell from the footage, whether the ball actually hit the ground first. It sure looked like the ball took a strange path...but stayed in the air. Can't someone with technical expertise figure out how to make that determination?

Painful era to be a yankee fan, the 80's man
TRIVIA: The Yankees had the highest win percentage of any MLB team in the 80s. What did they have to show for it? One World Series appearance (1981). That’s it.
Umpires decided after this that from then on they would eject Billy Martin for anything at all. Say a word against them, gone. Out of the dugout, gone. The Yankees fired him three weeks after this because they didn't want to be at such a disadvantage. A year and a half later Billy Martin was dead. One of the greatest managerial careers was ended by the pettiness of umpires.

Yes he was! I was ten years old when my parents started taking me to Rangers games at the original sheet metal stadium. I met Billy Martin once and told him he looked like my uncle and he smiled.
The concession stands had GO GIT EM BILLY in big red plastic letters on the menu boards.
He was Texas’ gift to New York and we miss him terribly too. OG MLB fans know that today’s game is a shadow of its former self.

The camera angles and instant replay abilities in those days were much more limited than we are used to today. But to me, yeah looks like it hit dirt first. We loved Martin. Fired and rehired three times.

This was years ago, way before we started expecting umpires to be 100% perfect. You’d argue with an ump, get tossed, no replays, and life moved on. Oh I miss those days.
No one expects umps to be perfect, the problem is they get progressively worse every year and guys like Hernandez, Bucknor, Diaz are allowed to have their jobs.

Way before Interleague play when I grew up playing Little League in the 70's. Grew up in the LA area, Dodgers were the team to watch--the Angels were the 'other' team we knew about, but if you were a baseball fan you knew who Billy Martin and Steinbrener were.
There was only one Billy Martin---anyone else behaving like him today would just be an imitator.
I'm gonna keep an eye on Ohtani this season.
