The ADHD Test!

  • Here is The ADHD Test! A lot of the time I get similar questions from you guys wondering what ADHD symptoms are and wondering if you have ADHD. While i'm no doctor, I decided I would put together a quiz that will help you in defining whether or not you should go to see a doctor about ADHD!
    This test is not a definitive diagnosis and shouldn't be taken as one but these are genuine symptoms of ADHD and will help you in figuring out if you should go to have a real diagnosis from a doctor.

      i used to be in the exact same boat as you.
      have a teacher contact your parents on your behalf, or just outright ask them. idk what your family situation is like.
      also the actual test is pretty much just a questionnaire similar to this. which of these symptoms do u have? how long have u noticed them? do u have family history with adhd? stuff like that. if u have 10/10 of these, i would bet money that u have adhd.

    I’m almost certain I have ADHD, but my parents are brushing it aside because they think it’s my anxiety/PTSD… I relate to just about every symptom there is. We were at the doctor’s office the other day talking about the likelihood of it, but my parents AND the doctor all made me burst into tears because they told me it’s just my anxiety. I’m so sick of not being heard. However, my therapist told my parents that she recommends me seeing a psychiatrist, and thank goodness she said that, or else I might never get diagnosed. They’re all on board with me seeing a psychiatrist, but just to look into medications for my anxiety, not ADHD… please pray for me 🙏😞

    • @roxanne9456
      @roxanne9456 7 месяцев назад +13

      If you relate to every symptoms, trust your guts and talk to a psychiatrist about what's on your heart, not about what other people expects you to. Unfortunately, many doctors are not trained to diagnose ADHD yet, so it's important that you seek the help of a professional who is aware of the symptoms and could establish a proper diagnosis for you. It will get better soon! 💪

    • @Somethinginspace
      @Somethinginspace 6 месяцев назад +4

      Simply tell your therapist. If they don't listen. Ask for another one. It is often personality dependant. Like customer service in general. Just keep trying until you get the right person. Unless, you go through a boatload of people. Then the problem may be something different.

    • @selinatakerei2392
      @selinatakerei2392 5 месяцев назад +7

      Keep in mind that PTSD and ADHD have a massive symptom overlap. Check out a few videos and websites on comparisons between ADHD and PTSD. You may have one or both. If you haven’t already had the psychiatrist appt, good luck.

      @identiticrisis 4 месяца назад +3

      Tbh there's evidence to suggest childhood trauma causes a lot of cognitive, mood and personality disorders. Autism spectrum stuff figures somehow, too. So it's really hard to separate anything trauma related from any diagnosis, especially as it's so common. It does take a specialist.
      It's also why professionals are moving away from DSM style criteria and working on managing symptoms first. That does require some element of patience on your part.

    Yes to everything (to an oddly high degree) except these two:
    1. Being late. I tell people in my family that being on time = being late. My way of avoiding this is to give myself a 30% time buffer for everything I need to do that's important. Walking to the dentist is the most recent example: takes 20-25 minutes of walking (depending on speed) but I will leave at *latest* 30 minutes prior. How do I do that? By doing everything to prepare for leaving 5-10 minutes prior bare minimum.
    So I'm getting my shoes on 40 minutes prior. Where do those 10 minutes go between then and when I leave? Beats me.
    2. Interrupting people because I need to get my thought out. I think talking on the forums my whole life has allowed me to be OK with not getting my thoughts across. I've posted tens of thousands of times, and not getting a single thought out isn't a big deal. Now....when I'm passionate about something, that's a different story.
    Even then however, I try to show signs of wanting to speak. If the other person wants to have a good conversation, they will usually pick up on it and let me talk; the struggle there is listening to them while I wait. If they simply don't catch on or don't care, I get the immediate realization that it's not important to share the thought with *them* in-particular. I usually end up losing interest in any conversation after that and stop engaging with them pretty quickly.
    Now, that can lead to me being selfish, and I try to keep that in mind; perhaps they genuinely just didn't pick up on queues I thought were obvious (putting my hand up slightly and starting to talk but stopping within 1 word usually.)
    Anyways...when there was a string of "yes, that's me" it was kinda 'funny,' because I started getting a bit emotional...followed by you talking about the emotional part. I don't get emotional often, but weird things can hit me hard.
    I don't really care to get diagnosed professionally, but I'm glad to know how I can start understanding myself better.
    Thanks.

    What really helped me in deciding whether I should get tested (which I eventually did) was reading experiences from other people with ADHD. The list of symptoms to me always sounded recognisable, but as you said, it's a list of things that many people experience anyway, ADHD or not. Just reading r/ADHD and going "wow this is literally me" on every post, as well as hearing the experiences of content creators I watch that have ADHD, eventually led me to believe that I really might have it, and I can conclude that relating to experiences of others can help greatly in making that decision.

    For the really fast thoughts one, I have coping mechanisms for that which is why I didn’t think I had adhd. Just one example of this is the fact that I have to read for hours every night until I’m literally forced to fall asleep. I can’t just sleep on command. It’s never the books that keep me awake. The books just help organise my thoughts so I might get a chance at sleep. I remember once when I was in fifth grade my teacher said we could sleep if we wanted to after a test. I tried so hard but my brain just wouldn’t stop speeding. Other people in class did it with such ease and I just couldn’t grasp how they did it. This is only one of the many coping mechanisms I have.

  • @jackiegrant410

    Yes to all but one. 62 years old, failed in school, couldn’t keep a job, mother called me lazy and awkward, friends say they couldn’t keep up with me sometimes because I change subject quickly when talking etc. Two months ago a good friend sent me a link about ADHD, well, what a relief, I can resonate with so much. The only way I could describe my life is everything I ever tried was like facing a brick wall that I just couldn’t climb. How sad, I’d of been a great musician, actress, clown, etc. I have now found my thing or should I say things, I create everyday, art, paintings, different materials, even started making hats and scarfs, anything creative comes easy to me and I love it, I have finally accepted myself. Thank you for this video.

      I change subjects, and will go back to old subjects we were finished talking about minutes ago or even hours. I can even have two conversations going on at once. Someone will say something, I say something completely unrelated, they say something about what they were talking about, and then I say something about what I was going on about, and this continues. My mom and I have no issue with this. My husband on the other hand thinks I'm ignoring what he just said.

    Been on a waiting list to get diagnosed for around 4 years, and in this video, every question was a yes. My mom also thinks she has it as well and some people don’t understand what it is like for us, so I got told growing up: “Attention Seeking”, “YOUR OVERREACTING, STOP IT”, “DON’T SNAP AT ME”, the list could go on forever. Luckily, awareness of ADHD is spreading but still, not everybody gets it especially Boomers, Gen Z, and sometimes Millennials. But they also can have it, but they didn’t know back then, and they might still not know now. My mom got harshly punished as a child because of ADHD, so please, just spread the awareness of it. Thank you.

      I'm Gen X - the one everybody forgets. When I was a kid it was called "hyperactive" and it was usually the squirrelly boy in class that was labeled "hyper". Every report card I had said I was smart but spent all day in class daydreaming, staring out the window and talking with classmates. I was always called lazy and in trouble for not studying, not cleaning my super disorganized room and being super emotional about everything. I am 57 now and always wonder how different my life might have been had I been diagnosed and treated at a young age.

    10/10. I add those points too: My voice changes; for instance, when "I'm relaxed" I never relaxed, but when I start work, when i wake up, or something, my voice is normal calm and soft. But when I'm feeling motivated, my way of speaking speeds up and my tone changes, sometimes reaching a high-pitched, fast pace like a squeaky mouse. I can't seem to control it, and I can't take possession of it. Furthermore, I act like a child when I work - and I do this professionally. I exhibit childlike behaviors, such as being constantly cheerful, highly motivated, always smiling, helping everyone, joking, and engaging in playful movements, some of which may seem silly but bring smiles. I'm genuine, I don't put on airs, I have no pretensions, and everything seems to go well for me. I don't experience jealousy at work, and sometimes, I struggle to discern whether someone is making fun of me or not. I speak rapidly to the point that people can't keep up, and they often ask me to repeat what I just said. I'm not a native English speaker, and I often receive compliments for speaking like a native. However, if people aren't English speakers, they find it hard to follow the thread of the conversation and ask me to repeat it, most of the times slow me down -.-. Slow speakers seem boring to me, and I struggle to follow them because I'm always thinking, thinking, thinking when they are speaking. For me, work is like a game. I enjoy it, love interacting with people, helping them, and exploring with them if they have any issues or can't find something. I hyper focus on things, and I keep searching for a solution until I find a solid point. I always ask for forgiveness for everything: if I do something, if I move and touch someone, if I walk in front of people talking, if I accidentally brush against someone, or if they are in the wrong. Apologizing is a constant part of my daily life, and I don't know how to stop it. I've tried, but it keeps coming back.

Hyper focus on things the u have a passion for can help u with getting and working on a job u love and I didn’t even know this but it’s shown the ppl with adhd have a rlly god creativity…. 1: I think about the project, I rarely start it....even in school I rarely did homework.
    2: Terrible attention to detail. I don't read things properly.....even in school I failed exams through not reading things properly.
    3: I'm very easily distracted. I had to listen to this video several times because I got distracted and have always been this way.
    4: I can hyperfocus on things I enjoy....always was able to.
    5: I arrive on time to things (usually super early because I'm afraid of being late) but in my family we have this saying "mamma time"...that means I say to someone I'm gonna be gonna 15 mins, 20 max...and will show up 3 hours later....so now they ask me "is that actual time or mamma time".....
    6: I'm very disorganised. I actually cleaned my desk yesterday, it's a mess again today like it was never tidied.
    7: I have serious issues with my emotions....always have done.
    8: I'm very impulsive....from as far back as I can remember.
    9: Extremely forgetful, I can't remember things from yesterday.
    10: My brain never shuts up, it keeps me awake.
    I'm 47 and although I finally remembered to submit the paperwork, once I remembered to fill it in, I'm still awaiting a diagnosis which takes a very long time to process here.

To which she said the solution to this is discipline through violence. According to her all this happened is becuz i wasnt obedient. We are asians and there is this stigma around mental illness that every mental illness means they are crazy mad or autistic. I discovered i had adhd ages ago but i didnt pay too much into it. but recently i noticed that it did impact my eduction a lot. They'll say I'm a failure but ignore the fact that they arent helping. This has lead to depression. Every child deserves good parents but not every parent deserves a child.

    I was diagnosed with ADHD at like 8 years old. On Adderall and Ritalin one time or another in elementary school. I think I stopped taking them before middle school. Anyhow, I'm 37 years old now and I can assure you that you can overcome many of these deficits. I never suffered from lack of attention to detail, but definitely all the others.
    I did estimating for a year or two in my early 20s and I've been in aerospace manufacturing for over 10 years. Definitely helped me with time management and organization. Maturing will help with impulsivity and "shutting off your brain".
    My strategy with getting to sleep is actually to focus on one particular thing. I will literally build a story in my mind of a project (building a wooden table) or an activity (taking my family out on an adventure) I want to do. Usually less than 5 minutes later, and I'm asleep. Otherwise my mind will be racing about what I need to do because I forgot to check my project list and I still need to set up an appointment with this or that person, etc.
    (and for the record, attention to detail is often where I get stuck)
    Good luck!

    I started off the video dozing off and staring at the thumbnails on the side of the player and i had to replay the last 30 seconds of what you said. I started laughing at myself and then thought "I might be overdoing this based on the context of stumbling upon this ADHD-related vid."
    And honestly, I don't really care if I'm far into the spectrum, in the work life I focus on my stuff and interact with people normally. I don't really got the time or energy to think about this entire ordeal. I don't feel too impaired or blocked by things when I take things seriously. I've often been told that I'm too serious and that I don't really show too many emotions, although the latter behavior has started to decline. Thinking of things being serious tasks helps me make plans more easily, and I'm sure that atleast some, including an IRL friend with diagnosed ADHD, can relate.
    I might check myself in the future, but I'll continue being me. I don't think that there is a need to change, maybe to ease up, but not completely change. I really don't care what people around me think of me either lol. Either cope or cease, I won't take a single metaphorical step out the metaphorical door unless you respectfully ask me to do so.

It caused me so much depression from the social isolation and anxiety because i did not know why i was so impulsive, always fidgeting why i could never pay attention, i had no self esteem because i was so confused or maybe i still am im getting tested tomorrow by a phycologist and i only made it to the secound sign before i wrote this comment. I think a lot of us are gonna relate to most of those points. Nowadays, our attention span is like a ping-pong ball bouncing off a million different tables, constantly getting distracted by notifications and the endless stream of digital content. Everything is designed to keep us constantly engaged with quick, bite-sized content, and our brain gets used to that, so much that a lot of people struggle to even watch 5-minutes videos, paying attention in class, working on a project, etc... It's tough to focus when our phones are buzzing every moment. It's like we're constantly sampling a bunch of different flavors, but never really savoring anything.
