@ This. Also: How is the fear of starting all over any different between a centralized platform like Instagram to a decentralized one like Pixelfed? Also do many organised instances make a notice when they shut down. It isn't that you must start over with your whole social graph on a decentralized platform like Pixelfed.
The servers and fediverse thing will simply not catch on for the general population. There’s too much friction. Someone needs to make something simple and bridge the friction gap
That's why Pixelfed is 100 times better than Instagram, because people don't need an account to view my photos. + I don't give some of my rights away to Zuckerberg.
I feel like all these alternative platforms won't work because most people who are on social media don't want to be on social media, they're just too deep in the addiction
On Mastodon, it's cool, and I like to be there, but because there is no algorithm pushing me lies and controversy, I don't feel compelled to be on it all day. It seems that when we don't hate our social media, we use it less!!! 😀
I would more say that people don't want the modern algorithmic social media world that is designed to make the user psychologically addicted to it and that push more rage bait content than real conversations.
Having to remember which server I’m on is simply a non-starter. Trying to make a pixelfed account and it’s asking me which mastodon server I’m on. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO REMEMBER THAT?! I just want to be on the one that everyone else is on. Why is there more than one server?
Totally agree, that from a usability standpoint it's just another barrier of entry for new users coming to the platform/decentralized social media platform(s). This isn't a "solution" and should be something the developers at least consider reworking, but at least for myself I'm currently creating my Pixelfed account and am just going to use my password manager to save what server I'm a part of in the login's notes section.
@dunngunkadoid "Simplicity always wins" I am waiting for someone to make a Pixelfed app and automatically sign everyone up to their server and never even ask people. Problem solved!
@@Anon-u3i Why would anybody do this? This just creates cost for you unless you make it a paid app which people wont use because any other app will do the same thing.
I wanted to like it but it's very buggy. 75% of the posts don't upload. Reach is good with hashtags on the description, but if I can't upload content...
Sadly it's still in beta. They've got a roadmap now apparently. I think it's got potential but it just never took off like Bluesky did to X even after RUclipsrs covered it well
The problem is that all these platforms start off decentralized, and then a bigger company offers them a large sum of money that they can't refuse and then it all goes downhill.
Yeah so like Mastodon where you need a master degree to create your server. I don't trust big corp but I sure don't want to have server moderator tell me what I can do either.
Not true, you can buy Ready to go servers on the Internet if you want your own. Better Have the right to choose than trusting 1 enshitificating company
For Mastodon you can also use a managed Mastodon provider like Mastohost and simply pay under $10/Month for an instance. You don't have to setup an own instance on a VPS or bare metal.
not hard but confusing for most people decentralization is not that important to them. It is even worse since servers block other servers just for having a different set of opinions. You can't complains about centralized social media doing censorship then defend server owners censorship by supporting defederation
If the at protocol app ‘flashes’ does come to fruition and has that migration from Blusky like Skylight might do as a TikTok alternative, then I assume that flashes will be that ‘instagram alternative’ that really challenges meta.
But Meta isn't owning the Fediverse or the ActivityPub Protocol. Your comment is like saying "If Microsoft uses E-Mail, then I don't trust it". The majority of the Fediverse is build on Open Source software like Mastodon, Pixelfed, Peertube and others.
I like how because Mark Zuckerberg jumped the political fence, now everything about his products is bad. I find your channels to be apolitical, and if anything, leans more toward the right and in praise of capitalism and competition. Marques even had an exciting interview with Elon Musk before he decided he didn't like Musk's politics. I'm not on the right, but people on the right have had to swallow their pride and use products produced by those who support the left for decades. You guys haven't quite de-platformed yourselves. But I see many on the far left doing so. All they're doing is making themselves less visible and less influential. If Sundar Pinchai comes out in support of Trump or Trump's policies, It's the end for left wing content creators.
Those are liberals not the true left. These are the same liberals who don't care that Meta do not support the Palestinians. These liberals are just mad at Meta because of the company's current association with Trump. That's it! Meta is one of the US big companies that deserves to go out of business for good!
people who complains about Mark was complaining before he entered politic. He did objectively many bad things. Facebook is a good product owned by a terrible people and company
@hiphopheaven no, he's not a terrible person because he supports someone different from you. That's getting so very old. What if the right and conservatives and moderates treated everyone to the left like they were absolute evil? No progress would ever be made, no real progress (I'm not referring to modern progressivism), If conservatives and moderates never allowed the far left to speak, or have a voice, or have a platform. This is the problem that Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk had. They both, just like me, voted Democrat until 2020. Then the far left puppeteers running the presidency and the code of Twitter and Facebook decided to act totalitarian. But now cancel culture is over. You guys can keep deep platforming yourselves, jumping to smaller social media, and hiding in your echo chambers. But all you're doing is making yourself less heard and less influential.
I'm a minute in and I didn't understand like 20 words already.
What didn't you understand? Maybe I can explain.
Oh the wikipedia screenshot at 1:04 that explains all the buzz. Thank you!
Picking servers is like picking a phone provider It doesn’t matter as much because you can talk to anyone and you can moove
You mean "can" and not "can't" :D
@ thanks yes of course thank you
It does, if an instance shut down you lose everything
True! Pick a large and local instance in the beginning. You can always change later or start your own.
@ This. Also: How is the fear of starting all over any different between a centralized platform like Instagram to a decentralized one like Pixelfed?
Also do many organised instances make a notice when they shut down. It isn't that you must start over with your whole social graph on a decentralized platform like Pixelfed.
The best alternative is to just not use ANY social media websites and clear the brain rot!
i agree, but yt is social media too
Yeah, I don't understand people so happy to join Bluesky or any other social network. Different logo same stupid concept.
@@floriansebastianpeters8888 Nope, yt is not even close in same level of brain rot.

The trick with these photo sharing apps is that they need to do a good job of getting non-photographer users to access the platform.
That's why Pixelfed is 100 times better than Instagram, because people don't need an account to view my photos.

It’s not that important because you should be able to see posts from other servers anyway

It's the same as remembering which email provider you are using (Google, Yahoo, etc.) when you are logging into the mail app on iOS.

does it have high resolution pictures?????
Pixelfed shows pictures in HD quality in the website (which can be installed as a web app on your smartphone or computer).
I’m just waiting for Flashes :)
Just use Pixelfed trust me :)
was it actually the rock!?
