The little 4-pin "header" he is uncertain about is the Slave/Master jumper pins. The ZILKEE requires the drive to be set as Master Single Drive via those jumper pins (if they're not already) according to the documentation. Some power comes from the USB cable that hooks into the computer, which gives 5V for both SATA 2.5" & IDE 2.5" drives. Any 40-pin drives the ZILKEE connects to which are parallel IDE will be getting their power through a little jumper wire that plugs into the back of the ZILKEE, which has four pins. (not needed for 2.5" drives) That little multi-colored jumper wire harness for parallel IDE drive would be getting its power from the 12-volt adapter & then passes it to the older 40-pin IDE drives. (The 44-pin laptop IDE drives, usually 2.5", pull power through the 44-pin connector, which enters the ZILKEE via USB cable.) This ZILKEE device really only works if there is no mechanical or electrical damage to the drive itself. It can't pull data off of the drives if they have some type of actual damage to them physically (a drop) or electrically (a surge/lightening strike).
This is NOT a data "recovery" hardware, it is only an interface. The drive you plug into it, should be in working order. I am surprised how many people have fallen for this scam of "data recovery".
Are you though? Data recovery is kind of a black box for most people. All they know is that their photos are in a little box that for some reason they can't get access to like they're missing a key or something.
He's got power: plugged into the wall 120v is the source and the larger L shaped sata port is the power connection to the hard drive. If the hard drive is dead or dying more than likely you won't be able to read from it. I have a similar setup up, my working hard drives will always show up, my dead hard drives won't or they freeze what ever software is trying to read from them. I stopped by to see if a device or software could read from failing hard drives, I guess not.
with any external drive ie hardrives your drive needs to be assigned with a drive letter to enable your pc to reconise it. with windows go to disk manager and assign a drive letter
It's not a scam not at all. You just have to know what you are doing and how to use it. Those drives he showed are either bad or have no partitions so the computer PC or Mac will not see a unpartitioned drive. You would have to look in Disk Management on PC's with Windows and whatever Mac uses for Disk Manager to see a unpartitioned drive. Also on a Windows PC it will show up in device Manager. This product worked great for me. I had no issues because I know what I am doing. No it's not a Magic tool that just recovers your DATA. You just have to have a little knowledge or have someone you know help you.
I bought the UniteK having the same issues, it doesn't see the old drive. I think it's possible that you're trying to recover a PC drive on a Mac, which I think might be my issue.
I have to ask where the drive is getting it's power? Don't you have to connect that smaller power (white) connector from the Zilkee to the drive to power it?
If you noticed when he hooked the drive up, it interfaces with the power connector and the DATA connector for the SATA drive simultaneously. The power connection is not blocked. The little 4-pin "header" he is uncertain about is the Slave/Master jumper pins. A lot of drives are simply set as Master without requiring any jumpers on the pins. Some require placing a tiny jumper block on those pins in the proper configuration to make the drive Slave or set it properly for a 2 drive system. The ZILKEE requires the drive to be set as Master Single Drive via those jumper pins (if they're not already) according to the documentation. I believe on the ZILKEE that the power comes from the USB cable that hooks into the computer, which gives 5V for both SATA 2.5" & IDE 2.5" drives. Any 40-pin drives the ZILKEE connects to which are parallel IDE will be getting their power through a little jumper wire that plugs into the back of the ZILKEE, which has four pins and he connected it. (not needed for 2.5" drives) That little multi-colored jumper wire harness for parallel IDE drive would be getting its power from the 12-volt adapter that he plugged into his power strip & passing that to the older 40-pin IDE drives. (The 44-pin laptop IDE drives, usually 2.5", pull power through the 44-pin connector.) His second drive is definitely bad because you can hear the head trying to move inside, and it keeps retrying. His first drive sounded normal. This ZILKEE device really only works if there is no mechanical or electrical damage to the drive itself. It can't pull data off of the drives if they have some type of actual damage to them physically (a drop) or electrically (a surge/lightening strike).
That second hard drive is bad. That's the head hitting the discs. That's probably the issue, rather than the adapter. Also, try turning it on while connected and THEN plug in the USB.
Are you trying to upload a Windows based hard drive through a MAC? The operating systems are not compatible, a MAC wont see it as a hard drive. Unless a MAC now has some trick windows adaptation. If you were running in Windows Parallels it might see it.
I could not get this thing to work and I’ve tried many other recovery systems that have worked. I don’t know maybe I just didn’t have it connected properly.
setting up hard drives require some knowledge it may be your pins or drive letters on the machine, pin to cable select should help also your second hd is damaged, you dont hear the clinking sound I was thinking of buying this myself I need to give it a try, so could not be Zilkee it may be you buddy
You’re probably right but I cannot get this thing to work. I have other recovery systems that work, and I have saved lots of hard drives with them, and thought this might be a quick or solution, but it turned out not to be for me
i have a HP Windows and the exact same happened to me, pluggeg everything up and nothing happen no data transfer, YOU RIGHT ZILKEE IS GARBAGE I BROUGHT IT A MONTH AGO, SO I GUESS I JUST LOST MY $59 BUCKS, HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO SEND IT BACK TO, MY DRIVE IS NOT BAD, JUST BROUGHT DRIVE FROM BEST BUY TO DAY
Do not pay over $25 for this device. It cannot recover data from a damaged drive, only working drives that you have taken out of another system. I just bought one and it's going to work for my uses but I only paid $16.50 w/shipping and waited for it to come from China. (The $20-30 ones come with the 12Volt 2Amp plug-in power adapter. I didn't need one.) I got lucky and it showed up within 12 days. Usually orders from China take about a month or two if you're lucky. Many resellers on eBay trying to get $25, $30, or even $50 out of these things. Don't let the ZILKEE name fool you. It's the same as the identical non-branded version, just sold by a different company.
This thing can not 'recover' data, it just makes it possible to COPY data from one medium to another. You can buy SATA/USB adapters all day for 5 to 10 bucks. It's a SCAM.

@@TomLeeman sure thing. No problem. The ads for this thing are misleading.
But how does it work if you know what you are doing and the drive is working as it should? Does the Zilkee work as advertised or not?

did you try a drive you know is healthy and works?
Yes
What's the point if you have to unbutton your computer to remove the hard drive. Might as well go to Staples.
I guess some people just want to save their data. Good luck. Thanks for watching. Happy holidays.

Go to Windows disk management, click one time on update & all should be fine...

That’s the first thing I noticed. The unit blocks the power port when you plug it in. I’m not sure if they thought of that or if there’s a workaround.
Can someone recommend a good model for a phone?
That’s an interesting question I’ll have to research it
