    Thanks for the detailed explanation. I note that you change from aperture mode to manual to adjust your histogram to the right. I shoot in aperture and adjust the exposure using exposure compensation; seems a quicker method, but both will produce the best quality from the RAW file.

    Hi Attilio - I'm relieved to hear that you also don't 100% stick to the app recommendation times at sunrise and sunset...When I was starting out, I was also getting mixed results sticking to the time frames given and also would amend the time by ending the shot sooner or later (depending on if its sunrise or sunset)....I actually thought i was doing something wrong because i wasn't adhering to the times the apps would give. In hindsight its now obvious that a scene gets brighter at sunrise and darker at sunset so the times need to be changed to adjust to that, but it wasn't obvious when I was starting out. Thanks for another great video.

    When you said 4-5 min exposure at the end, I was confused. You really do mean LONG exposure, wow.
    So, my camera is an entry level basically, D3400. I can only go up to 30 second exposure. Anything during the day and that is going to be completely over exposed until I have my aperture closed down down. So, this is where the filters come into play? And, you're attaching these square filters to the front of your camera, how?

    • @LordPenny95
      @LordPenny95 4 года назад

      You can go into bulb mode but you need a shutter cable plus you can get circular ND filters for your lenses that screw on

    Great video, thank you for the tips. I just recently started shooting long exposures with a 10 stop ND filter, but instead of doing calculations, focusing and then placing my ND filter on, I've left the filter on and used the LCD screen in Live View for composition, focus and exposure. Your thoughts? Again, thank you.

  • @davidmedeiros7572
    @davidmedeiros7572 6 лет назад

    Great advice to modify the app exposure recommendations at sunset and sunrise! You mentioned adding a ND grad to your filter stack for shooting long exposures but didn't indicate when to add it (before or after grabbing the base exposure). Might be good to clarify for newer shooters that the ND grad is put on before you calculate the base exposure, which you then modify with an app to get the correct long exposure with the regular full ND filter in place. Another tip for new shooters looking to get ND filters but wanting to ave money is that a 6 stop and a 10 stop ND filter gan be used in a stack to make a 16 stop filter! That's what I do anyway. Thanks for your great videos as always.

    • @AttilioRuffo
      @AttilioRuffo  6 лет назад

      Thanks David! I add the ND grad after taking the base exposure...and stacking filters is a good option indeed 👍

    • @davidmedeiros7572
      @davidmedeiros7572 6 лет назад

      I guess the effect of 2 or 3 stop grad is not that great over a several minute exposure in the end. Good to know either will work. I use a mirrorless MFT, but have seen some pros with FF cameras mention using a live histogram that can be viewed during the long exposure, and they will simply stop the exposure when they see the histo looks correctly exposed to them. Seems like another useful approach if your particular camera supports it.

    I am new to digital photography and watched a lot of videos. Thank you, for doing this.
    Based of those I bought the LEE delux kit with holder, big stopper, 3 filters and polo.
    I paid 1.400cad$ for a plastic holder and acryl glass. Also I got the LEE filter puche for 75$.
    First of all I habe the subjective impression this is way to mutch money for this but we can argue about art etc. So Inkeep my mouth shut on this.
    But objective I have to say this is just not thought through: the 10 stopper has a sealed edge to block the light comming in from the side but it is NOT covering everything. There is no way to block the sun comming in from the side. I have to push the filter low down to have only one open spot on the bottom. If the filter would be a little wider/longer then this would not be a problem. Maybe I do something wrong?
    Also the pouche - space for 10 filters but not for the holder? Really?
    Love your videos - thanks again.

    I'm not sure there’s many photographers out there, at any level, who manage to balance technical knowledge and artistic interpretation quite as good as you. The only two I can think of are the great David Muench who many think is the greatest living landscape photographer, and my fellow Lancastrian Michael Kenna who just happened to go to school with my late best friend.

    Thank you Attilio for this great short video :) Much appreciated. As I commented on one of your videos before, I use a welding glass of 10 DIN which equals around 12 stops. I usually aim for the middle of my histogram when I am exposing but sometimes might move to the right just a little bit. I usually shoot between F8 and F11 but sometimes at night I shoot at F16 just to get a starburst effect if I there are lit up street lamps. :) Thank you once again :)

    Im an amateur at my best but when taking the initial exposure before adding filters I usually do it with the polarizing filter on (if used) since it darkens the exposure 1 stop or so. Give or take.
    Another thing I've encountered is that the app or one interpreter from Lee can vary wildly from scene to scene. If I use the 10 stops alone I need to add at least 10-20 seconds on the exposure time. If using big stopper, graduated and polarizer I'm looking at about 25 seconds to 1 minute extra. Even when light conditions stay the same

      Yes...in the end practice and experience will always work better than the app! :-)

    Hi Anthony, Really like your tutorial. Love the idea of making sure the histogram is more to the left. More times i have ruined the chance of a great photo with into too much to the left and then too much noise post-processing. I have learned to love the histogram in-camera! Yes, the advice re: sunset and sunrise is great. One of my online lessons suggested not to use a filter during sunrise and sunset because of the change but I am going with your advise. I am going to get that 3 stop filter ND soft filter, too - prefer to get better results in camera with less editing after. Thank you.

    So
    Big F in the sunny day will not make “darker” the image
    And let’s say when I want to shoot the smooth of the waterfall
    I have to increase shutter speed to more that 5 seconds (maybe)
    In order to increase the shutter speed, will make the image more “over exposure”
    Now that’s why I need ND filters?
    And 10 stops in ND filter : the brightness of the 5 seconds shutter speed will be like 1/5 in shutter speed
    5 seconds SS getting block by 10 ND so it become 1/5 shutter speed
    Is that 10 stops mean?

    We bought our first filter - Kenko PL Fader ND3-ND400 filter. Thought this is good approach for beginners.. so we are trying it out.. what are your thoughts on adjustable filters? Never heard you mentioning those kinds, but then again - you are pro - and we are beginners and maybe this kind of filter is interesting for beginners only :)

    Hi Attilio. Common instruction when shooting long exposures on a DSLR is to block the viewfinder so light doesn't leak in and overexpose the image. I have occasionally forgotten to do that, but have not had Ill effects (I use a Canon 5D Mark 4). How important is blocking the VF in reality with modern DSLRs? Thanks.

      Yes indeed! The longer is the exposure the more important is to block the viewfinder, I just close it every time!

    Thank you for the very informative video, if I might make a suggestion; I find the background music quite distracting, I think none would be better.

    I think you meant to say decrease shutter speed to move the histogram to the right?

    Attilio, thank you again for a great video. I especially like the tip about modifying the app shutter speed for sunrise and sunset. I have been using F14 to get the most dept of focus but know this is probably a little too close to the diffraction point. I will try using a wider lens and F8 and see about the results (note using APSC, Nikon D500) Thanks again!!

      Thank you Tom! you will like the sharpness of f8 and with an APSC sensor, you might want to go a ted wider too...
