    3:07 the step I needed most was "some persuasion off camera." Sad emoji. The verbal clues were helpful but it would have been better to see the pry point. What worked for me, especially on the old unit, was putting a *utility knife* into the seam at the corner to get a slight gap. Then a *jeweler's flat screwdriver* into the gap. Another tip, the holes in the old unit allowed the circuit board to accumulate dirt. I cleaned it with *contact cleaner* and a toothbrush.

    Thanks for this detailed video. I’ve gone for years with my fob buttons being broken, only the unlocked button worked(barely). I recently lost all functions to my fob because of water damage and was afraid the circuit was the issue. After prying it open, placing a new battery and transferring circuit to new cover, all buttons work like a charm. I got sooooo excited when I was able to lock my doors from outside of the car🥳. You’re awesome 😊

    You forgot to mention two things:
    1. You need to replace the little white rubber "bracket" that sits on a "pin" near the middle button, seen @ 3:44 from old shell into new;
    2. the indicator light on new shell shines thru a hole , it's not covered, not waterproof. So you should do something about it!

    • @BobStein
      @BobStein Год назад +2

      Very helpful. thanks.
      1. What is that white bracket on a pin for? What am I missing out on by not having it? I must have lost that the first time I switched key fobs. (Now on my third.)
      2. I plugged the indicator hole with a dab of super glue gel.

      @@BobStein think the little white tab has something to do with not accidentally locking or unlocking the car ….. not sure how inportant it is….i saw mine… after the fact …(3rd time opening the fob 😳) and just transfered it to the new one….no biggie …..😎

    Good video -- thanks! BTW, that label on the inside of the original case can be removed and placed on the new case. I slid a pen knife carefully under the edge and worked it slowly under the label. The adhesive was still good, so I placed it on the new case. I don't know if it matters, but it's there regardless.

    Thanks!, i was getting frustrated with new fob not working in my 2004 Prius… it would open & lock doors but wouldn’t work in the ignition slot … then i realized what looks to be a magnet in the old case…transfered it - (as i realized your video shows- when i watched it again 😳) as in your video i did break the old fob case…lol , but once the magnet was in the new fob case along with the circuit board and battery - works like a champ …

    Thank you for this video; my key fob swap took closer to 4 hours. Most of that was cutting/chiseling/dissolving plastic around the transponder chip (seen at 4:19). The old fob was very worn, and it was harder to open than expected; I cleaned up the corrosion, but the transponder chip seemed epoxied in place as no seam was visible and the top did not appear matte but the same as the surrounding plastic. I took my chances and guessed where it was and spent a lot of time removing plastic around where it should be. Did a lot of scoring and chipping away, also used acetone to soften the plastic a bit. I eventually got the chip out without damage and the transplant worked. Also, there was no white chip (seen at 3:30 labeled 485-0 W 6 N), but that may be because this Prius is a base model.

    Bought a 2007 Prius about a year ago and my key is completely ruined absolutely no cover on the buttons and just in bad conditions. I've been holding off getting a new one cause I've heard it costs a lot of money and I really didnt want to spend 300 dollars on a key. Idk why I didnt search this up earlier! I needed to replace my battery and stumbled upon this video and I couldn't be more excited to change the shell cover today!
    Update just finished! Beware of the circuit my hands were shaking the entire time, it was probably the hardest part. Besides that everything works great couldn't be happier ☺

  • @matluoma9195

    Thanks Vlad --Instructions were great.
    Appreciated @3:43 you did a nice 'show' of the wall thickness, to help my confidence using my dremmel with cutoff disk to cut/melt to a depth along the sides before 'cracking open the case'.
    Thanks @ImmigrantUI on the rubber "bracket" that sits on a "pin" near the middle button and the small hole comments.
    For the small hole on front face for LED (mentioned by @ImmigrantUS in comments below and visible @7:14 ) that looks like a way for water to get in.. So I searched the junk drawer and found some 'clear' Shoe Goo and put a dab inside the case before I reassembled. Fingers crossed that it will be good enough.
    Don't forget the little gasket on the battery - mine was stuck to the 'old cover', but once I figured that out - EZ to swap over to the new remote.
    Also helpful tip -- if the slide to get the back off is being a pain and not quite opening all the way to let you tug on it... here's a clue: \ once you start sliding the top, notice that there is a small 'hole' in the slide. a small screwdriver fits nice in there to give you leverage to get it 'fully open' so you can slide easier. I used a small screwdriver on the top and on the bottom seam and then it 'moved'.

    Simple doesn't mean easy. Seems the old fob was glued together. It was more difficult to get things apart than I thought they should be. Especially the chip. I had to break things apart to get at it. But it seems fine.
    Glad to have the new fob working.

    Thanks for the helpful video

    • @BoulderHybrids

      Yes, very important to move the chip over. The paired chip alone will allow the car to start if the fob circuit board or fob battery fails. To test chip, tape chip to a small finger and stick your finger in the dash slot. Car will start if you press power button (with other hand).

    The COLOR of the Toyota logo indicates what type of entry system your car has. To use the auto-open function, your key needs to have the silver logo. If you get a replacement key and code it, it must also be silver to use the auto open function. The black logo is on the keys that don't have this function. Also, the original keys are GLUED together, and won't go back together after snapping them open, unless you also glue them. The generic replacements just snap open and shut.

    I bought a shell on ebay for my 2008 Prius. I changed the shell quite easily. The only caution I would add is that there are components on the edge of the bottom side of the PCB. These might get damaged when prying the PCB up out of the old shell. I did not notice the chip in the "nose" of the FOB and this is needed to start the car. Mine did not work until I watched this video. I put the chip from the old FOB into the new FOB and my Prius starts now with the new FOB. Thank you and good video!

    • @idmhead0160
      @idmhead0160 2 года назад

      I think the slot uses the irregular shaped part that needs to be transferred in addition to the circuit board. Not sure exactly what that is. I guess it's called a proximity sensor. It works by plugging it in the dash, even if the battery is dead, or the circuit board isn't working. My sister ran hers through the wash. None of the buttons work, but, it will still start the car if plugged into the dash. Problem is, that was her only key, and I think you need to have the circuit board working in order to make another one without having to reprogram the car itself which is even more expensive. I ordered a case and I'm hoping that I can get the circuit board working. Probably, its ruined.

    Those are JIS type screws not Phillips. Get a JIS screwdriver kit and you will thank me. I was unable to use the old screws- different sizes. The ceramic block is numbered and is likely an RFID. There is a white little brace behind the unlock button - be sure to transfer that. I used a dremel to get the pc board out.
