We go through the steps of programming a new smart key to the generation 2 (2004-2009) Toyota Prius. This process only works, with brand new keys... used keys can not be easily reprogrammed.
2007 Prius with silver logo key fob…this process worked like a charm, the first time. I just followed along with the “success” videos. I can’t thank you enough for doing this video. It saved me a TON of time, and over $275 by avoiding the dealership. Thanks again!!!
Was your old key in working condition?
@@berkayarslan4912 no, the old key didn’t work at all, at least the electronic part. I had resorted to using the spare “emergency key” that’s hidden in the fob to open the doors and start the car.
Where did u get a replacement fob?
Yay! After several unsuccessful attempts to program a new smart key fob following written directions, I found this video. Being able to see the dash light change and actually have the steps demonstrated was incredibly helpful. It took me two tries to get the fob to start the car. My husband then assisted with the rest of the programming. We had a little trouble coordinating the timing with the lock/unlock buttons, but the fifth time was the charm. This is my daughter's car and it's an 2005. It hesitated at the end, but finally the locks cycled and now everything works. NEVER GIVE UP! I think it's outrageous that the dealerships charge people so much money to do something this simple. What a racket. Thanks again for the demo video!!! :-)
The dealership close to me would've have charged me over $100. The service rep is a friend of mine and turned me onto a guy who programs them as a business. I contacted him but he didn't tell me what he charged. I think around $65 according to my buddy. Just goes to show--between Google and RUclips you can learn how to do virtually anything (except adjusting the headlight on my 2007 Yamaha 1300 motorcycle. That's still a mystery LOL!)
Totally worked on a 2005 Prius. Old fob had a replaced cover so it was actually a silver logo smart key but didn’t show it. This plus another video pointing out the need to press and unpress the “key” button under the steering wheel were “key” to giving my old car and key situation a few more years of life. Thank you!
Could you link that other video? I get stuck on the last step and have tried 10+ times. Maybe I need to do something with the “key” button?
absolutely works great on smart key. the door function does take at least 6 tries!! I think the key for me was the fob only goes in once on the second round (counter to other instruction sets) and you do end up pushing the ignition button three time...once on, second for display and third for off. Thaks a bunch
Purchased the Key off of Amazon. Followed the printed instructions after watching the video. Had trouble the first time around with the first part... came in and watched the video. Tried it again with success. Had trouble with the second part. came in and watched the video again. I thought it would flip the locks after holding down the lock/unlock buttons, or even the lock key... I finally figured that you must wait a little after the last button push for the door locks to click.
Finally had complete success. Both written instructions and video are a must!
+tamacn3 yeah, that's why I left the delay in the video, it took like 15 seconds for the locks to click!
Oh my goodness- This was so helpful! I reprogrammed mine in “real time,” with your video and it made the whole process so much less intimidating and mysterious! Thank you thank you!!
Great job futureman!
Here are the written directions as you demonstrated them, may be easier for some to follow. It worked perfectly the first time, for Step I and II.

Beautiful! I bought a spare key online 6 years ago, but the dealer wouldn't program it for me because I didn't buy it from him. It sat in my console until tonight. I had a tough time completing the 2nd part until I replaced the battery in the "new" fob. Now I have a spare smart key! Thank you so much!
Paula Marston Glad I could help... yeah before programming you have to make sure the batteries on all the remotes are good (-:
Thank you! A lot of the instructions online were missing something. You did it right the 6th time and I was able to do it right because of it! Thank you!
Glad I could help (-:
I was able to get to the very last step of part 2 but could not get the new fob to lock and unlock. Tried it 8 times- can't get to past last step. Suggestions?
Worked! Take your phone in the car with you and do it with him. After the first step is done skip to 5:33 and follow him from there. It took me two times and I got it to work. Saved me some money at the dealer.
Did you try it on brand new or on used key? I got used key, trying still, but not working :(
A used key will not work... once a key is programmed to a car, it can never be reprogrammed. This key on Amazon is the cheapest new one I could find; amzn.to/1spondc
I'm glad this video is here. Just like last time I lost my key, I tried the written instructions that I found and didn't get it to work but then found this video again and I could see how my timing was a little different and it worked on the first try. Thanks for posting this.
SUCCESS! It took a few tries, especially when I realized my old FOB actually had to work. LOL! I just changed the battery in it and was able to program the new FOB easily. I'll keep the old one as a spare just in case. Good job on the video and fastforwarding past the parts that didn't work for you.
Dude, you are a life saver. Ordered a new key fob on Amazon then watched this video. Thanks a bunch!!
Glad it worked for you!
Perfect! My old key was so busted that it kept triggering the horn alarm all the time. Now I have a replacement that works!!!!
Thanks very much for your video, you saved me $75 from a locksmith (cheapest price I could find, dealer wanted $132).
Got it third try. Thanks a lot. Press new fob buttons hard!
thanks for the great video you just saved me 130 Dollars. god bless you and your family
Great video and entertaining to boot :) Successfully programmed my new fob on the first try thanks to your clear instructions.
It worked for my 2005 Prius. I bought a new fob from amazon and programmed with my old working fob. I followed the procedure to the tee. Still took me 4 to 5 times to get it work. The first part was harder than the second.
9 years after your video. You help me. Thanks a lot
Couldn't have done it without you(and believe me, I tried). Thanks!
Glad I could be of help!
+futureman your car's made of year
it's an '08
futureman fob key just new fob key ?. can I use used fob key ?
Thanks sooooooo much! I saved myself a lot of $$, works perfect, literally took me 5 min to do
Hi! Do you know if I can reprogram a key (fob) from another Toyota Prius to my?
I am a firm believer in acquiring knowledge,it helps to have confidence. I change the battery myself in 2 minutes. Thanks for displaying useful knowledge.
Laiq
+The Time Center Thanks!
I was able to get the first part completed successfully - the smart features :( I have tried at least ten times- it does everything like the video until hitting the lock and unlock to test at the end. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Thank you. This saved me $220 estimate I got from a locksmith. Also the last part for lock/unlock, if it cycles twice, that means you pressed the lock button too long. This last part should be quick; do not hold onto it for more than a second.
This video saved me hundreds of dollars - thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
Alec J thanks for the video
Where’d you get a replacement key fob?
You saved me sooooo much money! Thank you so much for the great instructions! God bless you!
Thanks SOOO much for this video. Saved me money, and kept me laughing with all the references to Shite!
finally i bought the key from amazon and work in 5 min
the other key was from ebay not original
thanks alot
Can I use a key/fob from amazon or does the new fob have to be from a dealer?
Worked great. Took a few times but works now!
Daughter is buying a 2006, only has 1 fob. Glad to have found this video futureman, I didn't know it was possible to do oneself. Frankly this "dance", along with the ones to turn off the reverse beep alarm and passenger seat belt alarm, are about the only place Toyota screwed up on the Gen II design. There is a large screen right in the middle of the car that SHOULD have been used to do all these things. On/Off for the alarms and a button to program a new fob that is plugged into the car. How much work was it to design and implement all the "dances"???
+Bruce Alvarez Agreed, I think they do the "dances" to encourage people to make a trip to the dealer and drop some cash!
DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE like I did of buying a used key on Ebay... you can only FULLY program a new key. A used key can be programmed to start the car and get you home, but I could not get the remote functions to work (part two of this video's programming).
The author of this video, I believe, used a new key. Please correct me if I am wrong.
+Roger Wu yeah, unfortunately you can ONLY use a new key... old ones can't be reprogrammed. The key I have linked in the description on Amazon was the cheapest NEW one I could find.
You are a life saver. Followed you exactly and worked. 😀
Followed instructions and took me about 5 minutes (second part took longest) thanks for video and link to Amazon, also love the way you say shit LOL
thanks laddie!
Thank you man !!! you are the holly savior cause i lost my backup key i have now only 1 key left
+mr laodonren glad I could help! You can order a new key from the link in the description.
Entertaining and helpful. Thanks for the video! (I used a new key)
Does the original one still work so you can have two?
Just worked for me May 20, 2024 with the Amazon fob. Other videos did not work for step 2. Cancelled my return. The greatest.
Just so anybody interested knows: You don't program the new key to the car, you actually program the car's computer to the new key. That said, the computer can only be programmed for a total of 5 keys, including the original 2 you got with the car.
If I'm correct, you can only program the car for new key with the "master" key being one of the ORIGINAL keys, so be careful not to lose either of those.
Printed instructions for the "chicken dance" programming can be found someplace online. Just Google the topic.
So the thing is. I’ve lost the original key. How else can I program the after market purchase?
did you ever get it solved @@gerneshagillespie4053
worked on first try. thanks to you!
Thanks for posting this. My fob stopped working. I changed the battery which didn't help. I followed your steps starting at 5:36. After pulling out the key for the final time (6:16) my fob worked again.
MY fob is not working after battery replacement as well! Was your fob a smart fob or just a regular? Thanks!!!
Should it be taking more than 10 minutes for the key to reprogram? Still blinking after 10 minutes...
This is happening to me as well... is there a fix?
No, it should not. It will flash 30 times. If it continues to flash, then you need to start over. It took me several tries, worked when I had an even, smooth rhythm with the opening and closing of the door.
1:30 inmobalizer success
5:30 Remote success
When you said leave that in, what did you mean. Put the old key in one more time or put the new FAB in slot ?
This is great. And this worked perfectly.
Thanks for the video saved me some money
Thanks for the great video. The tutorial works with new key Fobs. If you have an programming issue with old key Fob in Denver area, I can program it.
Works great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saved $250 :)
Thanks
Thank you for taking the time to do this, it was very helpful and I greatly appreciate it!
here are the steps.
** STEP 1 - program to use as start key
old key in ignition 5 times then leave in
open/close the door 6 times
remove the old key
put new key, security light blinks for 1 min
will program new during this time, wait til security light stops blinking
then take out key and open and close door
** STEP 2 - program to use as remote lock/unlock
open door (no fob in)
insert old fob twice with door open (end with fob out)
close door
open door
close door
open door (leave open)
insert old fob once and remove (end with fob out)
close door
open close open (leave open)
insert old fob, close door
press power
press power again
press power a third time
then, pull old fob out, locks should click
press lock and unlock buttons at same time on old fob
press lock and unlock buttons at same time on new fob
then press lock on new fob
thank you, but you forgot one more close and open. You have 17 steps but there are 19 steps. I made a copy of your steps to use them. i ordered from amazon a new fob. Thanks again.
OCNative ii
You just saved me $95
The unlock and lock dsnt work
Fuck off popstar
The light will blink exactly 30 times while programing the new fob to start the car
Interesting!
Okay so I lost my original key so now I have the unprogrammed one can I still do it ?
+Free Channel unfortunately not... the original key acts as the authentication for the new one. Time to head over to the dealer with your wallet wiiiiiiiiide open! If you bring them your key, it should still save you a little money since they will not be marking up the part.
It gets hilarious after 5:00
At the last step when I press lock on new fob, my doors unlock and lock twice unlike his. And new fob does not work. Any idea what does that mean?
Can't I buy the remote with 3 buttons and program it? My remote is smart entry but only 2 buttons...
Thank you Thank you thank you!!!!!Have a bless one
you know you can replace the case on the old one, and just move the board and the transponder from inside it to a new case right?
That is great iea if you just want a new case but if you lose it you're screwed. Good to have a backup key.
God bless you. 🙌 I did it on my first attempt. Thank you 😊
By doing this, do you "kick" your old fob from working or do you now have 2 fully functioning fobs? Want to have one for me and my wife as we only have 1 right now. Thanks so much!
Hi, yes the old one will still work as well. You can add up o 5-keys to your Prius!
Yes! This was my question too! I didn't want to read all of the comments, so I searched for keywords "disable," "deactivate," and "old" to finally find this question. Hope my keywords help someone else.
Thanks for the video one question is will it start the car without having to insert it in the slot ..?
great stuff man. worked like a charm
I got a replacement case off of amazon. I have tried step 1 at least 6-7 times. When I get to where I put in the replacement key. It starts out flashing fast then slows down and won't stop, takes for ever? Help???????
Howdy Futureman!
Hope all is swell in Scotland! I appreciate your video immensely...education works easiest via humor :)
I've run into a stone wall on one of the last steps, and I can't seem to surmount it. Bought a brand new smart key from your link above, programmed it to turn ON and OFF our 2008 Prius, have gone through the process with success of the Smart Key steps UNTIL the very last portion: when I press the Lock & Unlock simultaneously on my NEW fob, then press the Lock, the doors go through the lock/unlock cycle twice instead of once. And it has ended this way multiple times...even if I press the Lock & Unlock simultaneously twice for 1.5 seconds like I read on another set of directions online. I just can't seem to get only a single lock/unlock cycle and then success :( Any thoughts? Thanks for your insight, and keep up the smiles!
Erin Kimmett did you ever figure it out?
You are amazing...could you come to Calif to program a new key for me!!! Thanks
Got it on 1st try. Thanks for posting.
What if i didnt have the silver toyota logo on back ? I have the black one? Do i try both steps.?? Does it work??
If your key doesent have a silver logo, then you don't have "smart" key functions on your prius... You can skip the first step, and go straight to the immobilizer part.
Can I use this procedures for 2008 Prius smart key remote which 2 existing keys can start the car, but they lose ability to lock/unlock doors?
I might have to do it 2 times for one for each key, not sure.
I also have Techstream software so maybe I will try that as well.
Thank you, futureman! Worked like a charm! Should the panic button work also using this method? All the other smart key functions work on the new fob now except the panic alarm. Thanks in advance for any comments you may have.
This worked really well, thank you!!!
thank you so much. this worked perfectly
Great video. I was able to program the new remote after many attempts. However, the red button is not working. How do you program it???
Every attempt at the last step, mines lock cycles twice instantly, deeming failure. Help ? I do it following your video each time. I quit last night and plan on trying again this morning
Anjawa did you ever figure it out?
I have a 2009 Toyota Prius and a silver logo on my original key. I bought a non-smart proximity key replacement online. I don't really want remote starting features, totally don't mind putting the key into the car but I was wondering if the "black logo" key they I bought can even be programmed to start the car at all? Should I just return the black logo key and get the silver key somewhere?
Is there any info on programming an old key with a new transponder?
was the key that you programmed a previously programmed key?
Al Ram No, as I mentioned in the video... used keys can not be reprogrammed ever.
thank you for save me money nuts they want to charge 1 hr when it takes less than 5 min. to do thanks thanks thanks!!!!!!!
For me this wouldn't work initially. I had the original key electronics but in a new case. Due to this it would not go into programming mode. The case has the electronis PLUS one chip needed for the key slot. Once I use the old case WITH the second chip, it would go into programming mode. After that all steps worked. Glad I din't throw out the old case or else the keyslot chip would have been gone.
Does it work on used keys or just on brand new ones?
Nice work. I just followed your motions and had no trouble at all. I also appreciate the "fast forwarded" bits as it shows how complex the process can be if you do something out of order. Nice work.
+Chris Blakeley I wanted to leave my failed attempts in the video so you could get a better feel for the process... just keep working at it LOL
Hi just want to ask that if I have a spare key fob of different toyota prius, can I programme it like it is shown in your video . Will it work in my toyota prius. Looking forward to hear from you
My sister gave me her key from her same generation Prius and I wanted to program it for a backup as I only have one key. Will the old key still work if you do this?
This was really helpful, thanks! We were able to do it in one sitting.
You just saved me over 130$ from the Stealership. Good day mate.
It worked for me. Thanks!
Awesome video . It worked perfectly. Thanks
Amazing video.
So one question.
I have a Prius 2005 with a black key and need a new key.
Can I use the "Silver"-logo key you have in your video? Or do I need to find a black-logo one, like my old one?
A silver logo key might work, but the black logo ones are cheaper, and that is all you need, here is a link to one on Amazon: amzn.to/2qj8UwZ
Thanks so much for your video!
You are amazing!
Firstly, your accent is a DELIGHT! second, I also have a gen 2 Prius and it came with a non working smart key, can I buy another fob online, or did you get yours from a dealer?
this programming can be use in old fob from another cars. I try it and at the end the fob being programmed when I do the lock, my car answer with 2 cycles, but do no open door or turn off my car remotely.
Can you please explain this again more clearly? You said that at the end when you do the lock part, do you lock it twice or does the car itself cycles and locks twice? Also How do you end the procedure if you say do not open door or turn off the car? One more question please, did you have the original master key while doing this? Because I do not, i just have a used key from ebay. Thanks man
Thank you! Works perfectly.
I have a Toyota Passo 2006 odered from Japan with the chipkey not working, previously a key fob used but now it won't work. Please help...
And it stopped Raining...Yayyy :)
I've noted and tried the steps several times on my '04 Prius on an Amazon replacement FOB, but can never get beyond the flashing light. Anyone else having this happen? Thanks for sharing this.
does your prius have smart key functions? and if so, does your replacement key have a silver logo on the back?
Yes!
Ur a life saver
How about toyota passo...keyless... i only 1 remote... can i duplicate to get more remote... can i do same like that video??? If remote have code(remote take at half-cut).. can do like that????
Hello, this metod its valid for TOYOTA Corolla Verso 2005?
Thanks soo much!
I got the fob programmed and everything is working, but I do I get rid of the programming light on the dash?
was this a brand new remote or a used one?? I got all the way through the programming and the smart functions didn't work. my locks cycled 3 times at the end ..did yours? car does start so the first half worked
Did you ever get this fully working? I have like 4 used keys from old vehicles that I'm hoping to program. I don't want to pay $150 for a new one when I have 4 used ones already.
I only have one key fob and it has randomly stopped working on my doors..I switched the batteries and still no luck any ideas?
Probably heading for the big scrap heap on the sky. if you can get it working briefly, program a new one asap!
Amber, I had the same problem...and I think I know why. The only key I have for my car is *not* a master key (the Toyota emblem on the back is black, and the master keys will have a silver emblem). When I changed the battery in my key, it did not automatically sync with my car. I followed the instructions listed above for Step 2 and my fob is working again. I can now lock and unlock my car using the buttons on the fob.
STEP 2 - program to use as remote lock/unlock
open door (no fob in)
insert old fob twice with door open (end with fob out)
close door
open door
close door
open door (leave open)
insert old fob once and remove (end with fob out)
close door
open close open (leave open)
insert old fob, close door
press power
press power again
press power a third time
then, pull old fob out, locks should click
What happened you dont have old key or old key doesn't even work? how you can programed new key without old key working?
