Second Gen Prius Fuel Injectors! How To Replace - Misfires FIXED!

- In this video, I demonstrate how to change the fuel injectors in a second generation 2004 through 2009 Toyota Prius. The vehicle which I used as an example suffered from a cold start misfire, commonly known as “morning death rattle.” There is of course no guarantee that this is your issue, please see this video for a complete list of reasons a second generation Prius would misfire on cold start: • 2004-2009 Prius Mornin...
OEM Fuel Injector: 23250-21020
OEM Fuel Injector Seal (fat one that goes into the manifold): 23291-0V020
OEM Fuel Injector O-Ring (skinny one that does into the fuel rail): 90301-07024

Huge thanks to you. I had this rattle problem on my Gen 2 Prius. Cleaning the injectors with an ultrasonic bath with white vinegar and a little gasoline was the solution. Remember to change the 2 seals as well! And insert the injection rail carefully so as not to damage the new O-ring seals.

Wow I have never heard this! So you didn’t have to run anything through the injectors? Just soaked them? Amazing! Will you tell us more detail? You should make a video on your own channel and post a link in the comments to this one, I could probably add it to the description too
Please like and subscribe if you haven’t already :)
Did cleaning the fuel injectors solve the problem? I have to try this to my 2006 Prius because I'm having cold start rattling sound. I recently replaced EGR valve for my other 2010 Prius and it runs perfectly. Thanks.
Thank you please subscribe ;-)
@@Sagemeister007 absolutely! Watch the video again, it should explain it all. There is also a video on here about how to change the injectors. I recommend buying a rebuilt set and swapping them out. They’re tough to clean yourself. Definitely subscribe to the channel and go through all the Prius videos. I’ve got a bunch, with more coming. Thank you :-)
Great video. Well explained.
Before I go through the process and expense of replacing injectors. Mu death knock continues after it warms up, is that still The likely problem. I change plugs and coils already
So, my 05 has 489,600 miles on the original injectors. You think there's a chance they need replacing?
Great video! Thanks for all your work. Will help me out a lot!
Nice. I'll end up doing this to my 08 at some point before long. When you put the car in maintenance mode, does it automatically exit that mode when you turn it off? Thanks.
Thanks for your video I have done all the steps but now I have a huge air leak I can hear the hissing and engine is rattling . I tried to put back the old seal (thicker one) but I still have the problem. What could it be ?
Feb 2024: Here are the crossroads where I stand. Thanks - never looked at injectors but will be the next step.
Thanks man, I had to do what did and take the seal from the old injector to get it seal.
Thank you for this video. Great job showing everything and explaining how to get it done.
Drew, really liked your video on 2nd gen. Wondering is you have a recommendation on which year's of second and third gen are the most reliable and or which years to stay away from. Also, what is the name of your dealership? Do you have a website that shows your inventory? I am originally from Rochester, and was just there a couple weeks ago for the eclipse. Wish i could have stopped in then. Really looking for a budget friendly commuter. My employer is moving tripple the current distance for me. Would value your opinion. You seem to be among the most knowledgeable prius guy i have found yet. Thanks
My car doesn’t get in maintenance mode, I follow all the steps. Can I do something different to put it in maintenance mode? Thank you!
Just did this helped a lot my car was throwing a little white smoke after but a quick drive burn up the excess fuel and it was good. I did reuse the bottom Toyota seal as they were thicker than whatever the rebuilt ones had
Very glad to hear it helped! Please subscribe :-)
@drew's garage I recently replaced 1 and 2 injectors with aftermarket ones with stock O rings on the bottom and fixed the rattle and p0300, 01 and 02 codes, however they both leaking fuel and I reseated several times but it kept leaking from the tops, no clue what else to do, my only other thing is to get stock injectors or top O rings that are stock, any help appreciated, thanks.
Great video! Exactly what I needed. Where did you get your new injectors from?
Ebay! Rebuilt OEM
I enjoyed your videos; very informative, but I was having trouble finding the oem seals; upper and lower, and didn't know there was a strainer. Do you have a link to them
Thank you so much Drew. Replacing the fuel injectors fixed my misfire code, but my check engine light is still on and it’s back to stalling and misfiring. I’m getting P0138 oxygen sensor high voltage, but I am not seeing any leaks. Do you know any recommendations for what to look for on this?
I didn’t use toyota orings, but I dont see any leaks and the knocking is gone. It’s misfiring still though
@@celia3479 P0138 means O2 sensor (upstream bank 1) probably needs replaced.
If misfire is just on one cylinder, it's probably ignition coil or spark plug. If it's all 4 cylinders it's probably an air intake leak or you need to clean your MAF sensor (only use MAF sensor cleaner on it. Nothing else.)
You can check all of the above with a scan tool that gives live data and swapping around ignition coils and learning how to interpret the data.
Easiest is to clean maf and make sure there's no air leaks first. Then change out that O2 sensor, and then check the plugs and coils. Plugs and coils are a bit of a pain in the butt to get at.
I like your Gen 2 Prius videos.
hi i have fuel smell when the air and heat is on when not in recirculation mode. could this be bad injectors or just the seals/o-rings gone bad? thanks
Had miss fire on cylinder 2 out of nowhere… wet around fuel injectors, bad o ring #2#3, $4 at auto zone for 4 pack!!🎉 Roller bladed there and back and made the repair at Walmart before it got dark
Love it! Hope the video helped! Please subscribe!
I'm glad it leaked at first. Mine did too. I have to trouble shoot it.
I'm pretty upset it leaked. I'm down to zero on my back account and there's $10 in a leaky tank as I fix it on private property hoping they don't tow me.
I'm hanging on a thread and when I thought it was fixed but to see it leak just makes my circumstance much worse.
Man, I'm running low on the fumes of life and I'm going to re install it and hope it's tight.
Too bad Prius made it this way.
This is what I need man
Glad it helped =) Please subscribe!
I replaced the injector fine and new o rings too, afterwards I have the misfire codes for rich conditions, (more gas then o2), I don’t have OBD machine that calibrated, so I put the old injector back. maybe I should do the maintenance mode like Drew and see if can calibrate so I can have better injector
Yikes! That should all balance out. Perhaps new injectors are defective ?
@@DrewGaragedo u have to recalibrate using the scan tool at all or u just change out and the computer will adjust itself?
@@Clamlifenc no calibration is required… The computer adjusts how much fuel it pumps out through the injectors constantly by what feedback it gets from the oxygen sensors…
Thank you so much ..I plan on changing my injectors after I change my spark plugs
Thank you so much for watching! Please subscribe. A lot of Prius content here
Do you have the part # for the Toyota o-rings for these injectors?
This video helped me brother thanks 🙏
I’m glad! Please subscribe !!
Whats your trusted source for reman injectors? Seller name on ebay?
you have a link to the seals?
This fixed my morning rattle and misfire code but now I’m having a P0606(replace PCM) and a P0420(cat below threshold)! 😢
I’m sorry!!!!!! The pcm code is usually a voltage thing - very seldom it’s the actual pcm. That’s my finding at least.
As for the cat - many ways to “skin” that problem (terrible pun) but none proper to say here :) please subscribe
I'm a first time 04 prius owner about 2yrs now. I was wondering are the Prius engines usually that loud mines maybe slightly louder than his
YES they are a bit clackity
Do you know the parts number for the Toyota OEM o-rings?
did you find this part number?
my second gen prius doesnt havea death rattle but is getting p0420, p0101 and MPG dropped and runs rough... i changed just about everything besides the cat.. my question is can you run rough without getting misfire codes?
Actually, never had codes on the ones I had. I think they didn’t misfire “enough” did you try injectors? Can’t diagnose without seeing but it’s almost always injectors in my experience on 2 gen
@@DrewGarage i havn't done injectors yet. its my next fix. going to do it in the next few days... would bad injectors ccause a p0420? also make my mpg crap and run rough? I feel like its my injectors because on a cold start idle my car has a unusual misfiing like jerks upon start up... its not enough to trigger a misfire code but it feels like something isnt right.
@@Primer9 so the ONLY possible connection between injectors and p0420 is if they are leaky reather than restricted and poisoned the cat. Oil (meaning worn out rings) could also cause cat poisoning and misfires... hopefully its injectors and the cat is unrelated. IF your cat was stolen and has been replaced, the replacements simply dont last
I have a Prius too, PO420, can means many things: engine runs rich causes excess of gas going to the cat and could damage the cat, root causes could be: fuel injector leaking, MAF sensor dirty or going bad, air/fuel sensor going bad, O2 going bad, faulty fuel regulator or purge valve…dig into the root causes before changing parts.
I have leaking in the injectors,I used the new ones unfortunately I didn’t save the old one, what can I use with the new rings to stop the leaking? Please!! Thank you 🙏
I added the factory part numbers to the description- grab those from toyota and park sure they are wet when installing. Please subscribe!
@@DrewGarage I will subscribe. Thank you 🙏
Morning!! I have another question if you can help me please? What you do when one of the injectors it’s too tight it doesn’t rotate, the first one is too tight and the o ring it’s breaking. Thank you!!
I would get new orings and seals for that one and make sure they are "lubed" when installing, Just get them wet with gas@@eddiechimex
@@DrewGarage thank so much 😁 Hace great day 🌞
would a bad injector also trip a P0301 code? Ive replaced the plugs and the Ignition coil and still have the code showing.
Tengo el mismo problema p0302
It could! See my fuel injector replacement video!
Does anyone have the part number for toyota OEM seals and injector o-rings? @drew's garage?
Added to description:) please subscribe
HEY WORLD! I see a couple thumbs down... just wondering why? This video covers 100% of the process and links a video that covers 100% of the reasons any car can misfire... hoping to learn from your feedback =) God Bless!
I think you lost us at orings and how to install

Hey! Can you add the part number for the OEM seals and o-rings?
Dune dooded it, but I watched anyways.
Well thanks for that! I've done so many, but i remember being uneasy about the first one. I'm amazed how many times all these cars need is injectors! Please subscribe!
