This man communicates in a way unlike the rest of us mere mortals ! He has the best training and musicianship but he has that quality that makes people drop what they're doing and go to hear him. Star was in the air from the beginning of the Nocturne and listen to his rhythm in the mazurka part of the Nocturne. Genius ? I was crazy and still am about Gadjiev ! His left hand is incredible -hear 4th etude!!! How does he pedal/attack/finger those pinky accents in the 8th minute .Ive heard pianist accent them but never with pedal how is it possible as cleanly as he does it??? Genius .Garcia does the a minor etude also with so much personality I felt like I had never heard it before but Liu has a sound and personality that from the first note you know he is a finished artist !He sounds like the famous recordings just better recorded !
Absolutely hands down one of the very top performers of the competition. His elegance and charm are infectious. His tone is crystal clear and his voicings are absolutely mesmerizing. He has a complete sense of cohesion in each piece. He's not wandering aimlessly - it all makes sense. This recording will be the new standard for all 4 of these pieces. Such a memorable day!!!! New artist to me. Love his rubato. The way he played a section several minutes into the first nocturne humorously, like he was playing the piece in a vaudevile music hall, with decreased pedalling, was genius!
He is so deserving. From the beginning I was captivated with his perfect tempi. His brilliant dynamics within his phrasing makes the music breathe. The articulation especially with his left hand. I love hearing all the notes and the space between them. He communicated the music through the piano with minimal facial expressions. What a mature pianist for his age and to win against such formidable competition is remarkable. I can't wait to hear what he has to say with other composers music. I'm inspired listening to him. I want to go practice :)

I love all of his music. Beautiful tones, originality, intelligent interpretations and artistic imaginations, creativeness, goes on and on. Especially when I first heard the A minor etude, he blew my mind!! Mesmerized, jaw dropping!! Commanding control!!! Bravissimo!!
I saw it after the first round and I wrote it in a comment on facebook. Bruce Liu was absolutely the best. Garcia Garcia - although completely different, was delightful. In the third round, I was impressed with the sonata played by Kyohei Sorita. Waltz played by Garcia and rondo by Sorita at the concert of laureates - incomparable. Yet I am delighted that Bruce Liu has won.
After he played that first Chopin etude you couldn't hear a pin drop! Extremely fast and superbly accurate fingers! The best! I have never heard that etude played as fast and accurately!

There are some great pianists at this competition, but Bruce excels above all. He has everything in his art: brilliance, lyricism, refinement, etc.He must win! Thanks to him, music took on a new spirit. He is also an extremely handsome man. So everything is perfect. Here we have the first prize!
@@trifonovfan9819 Kissin played it much faster, and obviously excellent, but I like this interpretation very much, it is slower and somehow "more music". Chopin's etudes are not only technical. I actually was so surprised to hear these eights in the left hand going down so clear I've never experienced it like this. It's about 6:27. But yes, it is presto con fuoco generally and Kissing played it really con fuoco grande :)
I just heard him earlier in the Rubinstein comp.He has had miraculous growth -its more than piano playing. Something happened with this guy.Magic. Was Kissin playing the scherzi like this at 21? Unbelievable !
I like his haircut, before competition he went to a great stylist and I respect him for that, because good looks are important to me. He is a great pianist, of course, but in my opinion every pianist from top 4 places, could be a winner. Why? He didn't get any other awards: for the best interpretation of Mazurkas,it went to the Polish pianist, no award for Sonata, it went to the Italian/Slovenian and no award for Concerto, it went to the Spanish pianist. There was no award for Polonaise this time. I still congratulate him for winning the best piano competition in the world and wish him good luck, I'm sure that his interpretations will be adored by millions or maybe even billions, who love Chopin.

He has a very exact and precise way of playing. Would love to hear him live. His interpretation of the Nocturne was very different. Much more dynamic range and he exposed inner voices extremely well. I dont know about his wrist positions from a technical standpoint. I am very impressed and entertained by his playing. Congratulations on winning this competition.
Again it so hard to work out what the judges will decide each year we have exceptional players like him who don't make it past the first round ..... His playing was sublime really was..... Love to see him in the finals just to hear more of his playing ..... Exceptional

Having played on Steinways myself, I definitely understand why he might not want to. While they have a fantastic sound, they are often more difficult to play than other brands, especially for rapid pieces, due to the extreme weight of the keys and a seemingly slower response. I've never played on a Fazioli, so I can't speak to it's feel. My personal favorite to perform on so far is Yamaha because of the light touch, bright tone, and lightning quick response of the keys that feels almost as though they are bouncing. However, Yamahas typically are no match for the raw power of Steinways
What I really liked about Bruce is that I can't feel any sense of arrogance, superiority or for virtuosity's sake. His focus is in the music especially in the phrasing of the piece. Also, his attack on the piano at forte to fortissimo range is not hard on the ears.

There is apparently some controversy about Eve Gevorgyan being ignored in the conpetition. She played the same Nocturne in the first round. A great pianist but OMG anyone listens and watches the 2 side by side should understand why Brue Liu won. Ravishing beautiful and sensitive performance. Oh - I hope I am not being politically incorrect to point out that Bruce, in addition to being an extraordinary pianist, is beautiful. Whether we like it or not, looks can make a difference in a career and being so handsome can only help. Congratulations Bruce! I hope to hear you play in person someday soon!
Hehehehe ; fair point their about looks ; but honestly - his playing is so good , he could have worn a bucket on his head and still won us all over - an exceptional pianist 🙏🙏🙏🙏 As for the others performing in the competition, ive not heard all of them - but most of the finalists in the latter rounds ; looks aside , this man's playing stood head n shoulders above them all 🙏🙏🙏
Although I’m not generally a fan of Faziol, I feel that this piano was made for the incredible Chopin and most importantly the absolute perfection of Bruce Lou 👍👏🏻🎹👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😄
At the first listen, the Fazioli struck me as incredibly 'bright,' almost distracting. However, after many listens of not only Bruce Liu, but Sorito, Gadjiev, and Hayato Sumino ~ I see/hear/appreciate why Mr Liu chose the Fazioli and how he perfectly employed the instrument to provide us incredible Chopin! So fortunate to be able to see and hear these brilliant pianists and Chopin's miraculous compositions. ♥️🕊️
I noticed that different cultures (countries) are more used to certain piano voicings. Being from Europe I had for instance a hard time finding an to me appealing brightly voiced grand in the US. Once your ear gets attuned to a different voicing, it is easier to appreciate it. (And yes, I'd love a Fazioli - all the ones I played thus far were (to me) delightful instruments). Of course YMMV.

Again it so hard to work out what the judges will decide each year we have exceptional players like him who don't make it past the first round ..... His playing was sublime really was..... Love to see him in the finals just to hear more of his playing ..... Exceptional

Absolutely mesmerizing. And how I love that he chose a Fazioli and the 2nd place winner chose to play a Shigeru Kawai instead of Steinways.

Having played on Steinways myself, I definitely understand why he might not want to. While they have a fantastic sound, they are often more difficult to play than other brands, especially for rapid pieces, due to the extreme weight of the keys and a seemingly slower response. I've never played on a Fazioli, so I can't speak to it's feel. My personal favorite to perform on so far is Yamaha because of the light touch, bright tone, and lightning quick response of the keys that feels almost as though they are bouncing. However, Yamahas typically are no match for the raw power of Steinways

What I really liked about Bruce is that I can't feel any sense of arrogance, superiority or for virtuosity's sake. His focus is in the music especially in the phrasing of the piece. Also, his attack on the piano at forte to fortissimo range is not hard on the ears.
Yes he's completely focussed on the music. As a listener you don't get any sense of discomfort which comes from not quite so accomplished pianists

There is apparently some controversy about Eve Gevorgyan being ignored in the conpetition. She played the same Nocturne in the first round. A great pianist but OMG anyone listens and watches the 2 side by side should understand why Brue Liu won. Ravishing beautiful and sensitive performance. Oh - I hope I am not being politically incorrect to point out that Bruce, in addition to being an extraordinary pianist, is beautiful. Whether we like it or not, looks can make a difference in a career and being so handsome can only help. Congratulations Bruce! I hope to hear you play in person someday soon!
Hehehehe ; fair point their about looks ; but honestly - his playing is so good , he could have worn a bucket on his head and still won us all over - an exceptional pianist 🙏🙏🙏🙏
As for the others performing in the competition, ive not heard all of them - but most of the finalists in the latter rounds ; looks aside , this man's playing stood head n shoulders above them all 🙏🙏🙏

Although I’m not generally a fan of Faziol, I feel that this piano was made for the incredible Chopin and most importantly the absolute perfection of Bruce Lou 👍👏🏻🎹👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😄
At the first listen, the Fazioli struck me as incredibly 'bright,' almost distracting. However, after many listens of not only Bruce Liu, but Sorito, Gadjiev, and Hayato Sumino ~ I see/hear/appreciate why Mr Liu chose the Fazioli and how he perfectly employed the instrument to provide us incredible Chopin! So fortunate to be able to see and hear these brilliant pianists and Chopin's miraculous compositions. ♥️🕊️
I noticed that different cultures (countries) are more used to certain piano voicings. Being from Europe I had for instance a hard time finding an to me appealing brightly voiced grand in the US. Once your ear gets attuned to a different voicing, it is easier to appreciate it. (And yes, I'd love a Fazioli - all the ones I played thus far were (to me) delightful instruments). Of course YMMV.
