I’m by no means a professional pianist or a renowned judge, but Bruce has been my favorite pianist throughout this competition. I love the way he takes a musical breath after passages and phrases, he definitely knows what he’s doing. There’s something fresh yet brilliantly artistic about his music. He definitely brings new sounds to pieces that I haven’t heard of in many of Chopin’s pieces. He’s definitely my pick for the final.

This recital still boggles my mind!!! He played like inspired from the beginning to the end, not even taking breaks between Sonata movements. His left hand 18:15 😵 or his left hand gesture 18:40, or wiping sweat from forehead with his hand performed perfectly in tempo integrated with the whole musical performance. He's totally lost in music. The best storytelling ever! PASSIONATE EXTRAORDINARY UNFORGETTABLE

No wonder he is the winner of the 18th Chopin Piano Competition which just concluded. Listen to his 3rd (at the 3:02 mark) and 4th Mazurkas (at the 5:27 mark). They are absolutely sonic poetry, with a delicacy of touch, gradations of tonal dynamics and subtle nuances which he seemed to coax from the Fazioli piano so effortlessly. His technique is solid, but very much tied to the music -- that is, no show of virtuosity just for the heck of it. This is really sublime interpretation of Chopin. I haven't seen/heard a pianist so totally as one with his instrument as Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu in this 3rd round of the Chopin Competition. Congratulations!!! 👏👏👏

Armellini's Funeral March was much talked .I will never forget the sense she made (incredible vision I enjoyed her in that movement than almost any other pianist I've ever heard Rachmaninoff would have liked it too .His recording hasn't dimmed over the decades about and Bruce Liu's is magic from the start. Middle section glorious .The most thing and truly emotional engaging musician I've heard in decades . Sensitive , with the right temperament . Every phrase has depth and meaning ! I can see why he won the competition. Dynamic, very smooth transition from soft to loud keys or between staccato and slurs using pedal; very energetic and in absolute control- technically he seemed to be able to play faster than his opponents at very loud volume when necessary without any rough edges as all the notes are smoothly connected. physically he seems to have noticeably greater endurance and stronger and faster fingers than other finalists, which allows him to play aggressively at full throttle until the very end.

We know we have a genius when not everyone can catch this guy's genius at first sight. He shocked the audience. He shocked the jury. He shocked me with his first round performance and every other performance since then. Yet, many who can't understand his approach seems to dislike the result. That's the genius sign. You have to polarize in order to remain fresh. Both Liu and Garcia did that. I'm sorry for those who aren't able to understand his playing, but the jury wasn't wrong at all. In fact, for me that's the best result in years.

    • @ge.m6239

I agree that he shocked everybody. And some liked that feeling, some didn’t. But I feel like everybody is trying to figure out how to fit him in classical world and what he will bring into it. I would say he will definitely bring (in addition to his immense talent , of course) a certain charisma and character. Both on and off stage. I saw this more clearly when he refused to go stage a second time after the final stage, saying that because this is a competition not a concert, it would be unfair to other contestants. Even though some others went a second time and a few ones hoped for the call, which is okay of course. But he didn’t bend to that temptation and i can see a strong character there that reflects to his artistry which is one of the certain qualities of a true star. So i think (I hope) he will make his own way and name in music scene with his style. There always be some people who will not like it but as Bruce himself said, “people will like you, and some others don’t so I will be myself.”

That's one of the biggest ovation in the history of this competition, maybe even the biggest, but he choosed to stay humble and patient to not outdraw the other contestants. Finally, he had his moment on the winner's concert. I can't wait to hear more from him, personally I would like to hear an entire Chopin album with other pieces that he didn't play. And he explained it like the most normal thing, no big deal. But of course the audience made him closed the gap to call him gazillion times at yesterday’s gala!😆 I think same thing will happen tonight and tomorrow and his hundreds of concerts following that. On Twitter, i read that a Polish composer (Joanna Nazarowa, i think) even claimed that he will earn more than the Beatles or Pavarotti!! 😃 I don’t think it will go that far but he gives that impression to people, so it is a good example peoples excitement about him, i think.
