Superb playing in all three rounds. A pianist of great intelligence in his individual approach. Marvelous his interpretation of the sonata in B flat minor.
Bravo !!
Ohhhh! THE wonderful “Variations in B Flat Major op 2” to end….36 mins of such joy! It is my very favourite of Chopin’s because I adore ballet as well as Chopin’s music, and this is used for the Royal Ballet’s “Month in the Country”, which is such an amazing ballet by Frederick Ashton he choreographed in the 1980s on Lynn Seymour and Anthony Dowell. I last saw it at the Royal Opera House in London for my 80th birthday treat in 2019.
I’m by no means a professional pianist or a renowned judge, but Bruce has been my favorite pianist throughout this competition. I love the way he takes a musical breath after passages and phrases, he definitely knows what he’s doing. There’s something fresh yet brilliantly artistic about his music. He definitely brings new sounds to pieces that I haven’t heard of in many of Chopin’s pieces. He’s definitely my pick for the final.
there are so many truly great pianists on the world circuit today, but bruce would be a welcome addition...there's no-one quite like him...his voice is unique...kudos to the judges of this edition of the Chopin Competition for recognizing it...
The rubatos are so natural. One feels like you dont know where Bruce will go and it makes it inticing to listen to again and again. He seems to possess the technical and artistic freedom to do whatever what he wants, so his potential is sky high.
No wonder he is the winner of the 18th Chopin Piano Competition which just concluded. Listen to his 3rd (at the 3:02 mark) and 4th Mazurkas (at the 5:27 mark). They are absolutely sonic poetry, with a delicacy of touch, gradations of tonal dynamics and subtle nuances which he seemed to coax from the Fazioli piano so effortlessly. His technique is solid, but very much tied to the music -- that is, no show of virtuosity just for the heck of it. This is really sublime interpretation of Chopin. I haven't seen/heard a pianist so totally as one with his instrument as Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu in this 3rd round of the Chopin Competition. Congratulations!!! 👏👏👏
This playing is genuine perfection! Such majestic technique and maturity with each phrase...how you make the right hand sing in perfect balance with the left. Your teachers should also be congratulated, for they have moulded a next level prodigy to the world! I shall be watching for you, Bruce! Congratulations
He makes music come to life with an artistic vibrancy. He adroitly avoids any maudlin touch nor much false affectations.. His tone is fresh, true to his youthfulness. And his technique is superb and is always supportive of his artistic ideas.
Brilliant! Watching back I can see why he won this competition. I am sure he is an inspiration to many people learning to play the piano (including me). Bravo maestro!!
I am shocked in his third round. I was first attracted by the sonatas and knocked out with a variation of Don Giopanni. I realized it was a great winner!
Amazing array of colors and beautiful tones, lovely endings. He’s the only one that can give me wave after wave of goosebumps right now. Definitely my pick!
Just PHENOMENAL. A breathtaking performance and the sound of Fazioli👌🤗 Mazurkas were dancing! All the sonata movements were outstanding! Variations were played with the love for Mozart! Can't wait for the concerto ❤
Now that we know Bruce won the competition, I had a chance to listen to the same concerto played by Martha Argerich in the same hall 5 years ago. Absolutely I prefer the young, fresh dynamism of Bruce's playing with his signature crispness. Bravo Bruce! You will have a great future.

Variations in B flat major, Op. 2 - great spirit of Mozart and Chopin in one - brilliant performance!
