Army vet battles for truth against "stolen valor"

  • "Stolen valor" is a term applied to those who falsely claim military service, either to gain recognition or, in some cases, money. It's offensive for many Americans to think of, but because the government often doesn't have the resources or time to investigate, private citizens pick up the slack. Jeff Glor speaks to Army veteran Anthony Anderson, who works day and night separating military fact from fiction.

As a retired vet let me just say that nobody is stealing my valor when they dress up and play like they are Soldiers. I am more concerned with the collateral damage from people whom we vets now refer to as "valor vigilantes", veterans who have decided that this issue is so important they will aggressively attack anyone whose service they find suspicious, essentially shoot first and ask questions/check facts later.
When you falsely accuse a legit veteran though you are stealing their valor so tread lightly or suffer the consequences of falsely accusing someone who you should treat with a little courtesy and respect.

Very good point!! The first thing any service member should do is ask for a MILITARY ID!! It is not against the law to wear cammies or any position of a uniform as long as you aren't wearing it to gain discounts that true vets have earned!!

Chuck Lankford if they’re “active” and don’t have a CAC card, they’re fake. If they’re not active and don’t know what a CAC is, they’re fake. Simple questions can tell you in a heartbeat if someone is bullshitting or not. Sadly, the media doesn’t ask for proof before they run with a story cus just look at Nathan ( Stanard) Phillips who the media ran with him being a Nam Vet when in reality he served stateside as a refrigerator mechanic. That didn’t stop them from running the “Vietnam veteran attacked” headlines.

Which clothing do you speak of? Wearing a t shirt that says marines on it, I agree with you. Wearing a complete uniform when you didn't serve is a whole different story, so please clarify. I'm a disabled Air Force veteran and stolen Valor is extremely upsetting to me. Veterans at the very least gave up their freedom to serve their country, I'm disabled due to serving my country and many many men and women gave the ultimate sacrifice to serve their country, with their life. I'm stunned by the number of people that think it's no big deal. It flipped that 25 ton truck like a pancake, left a crater more than big enough to have fit that truck in afterwards, the 400 lb tires had been blown 300 yards from the site, and in the morning when they flipped it over, it all but snapped in two pieces at the firewall. It was destroyed but the 5 men inside somehow survived. My son was given an honorable/medical discharge before his time was up because of his injuries, and the pain he lives with sucks, but it doesn't stop him from being a guide for other wounded warriors in Oklahoma where he and our daughter-in-law plus 3 grandkids live, he also works a full time job and has spent his time the past 3 years going to school at Oklahoma State. He will graduate next month with a degree in some kind of earth science. He plans on continuing to be a waterfowl hunting guide for those others because it helps him deal with his injuries as well. Besides a TBI and PTSD, his spine is a mess. A great Orthopedic surgeon told him he would love to help him, but he would have to fuse his vertebrae from top to bottom and he's too young for that. He's always been a hard worker, and on top of his job, the Army pays him full disability for the injuries he suffered. We are just grateful he is alive.

I went into the U. S. Army in April of 1969. It was not my intention at the time, but I ended up making a career of the Army in intelligence and counterintelligence and retiring 27 years later. I get accused of Stolen Valor on social media such as Quora often for three reasons:
I have been a registered Democrat since 1972. In 2004 I supported and voted for John Kerry. In 2016 I supported and voted for Hillary Clinton. In 2020 I supported and voted for Joe Biden. As a result people have accused me of Stolen Valor and have demanded I be arrested because “everyone knows that all veterans are conservatives, Republicans and support Donald Trump”.
From May of 1970 to May of 1971, I served in Vietnam as a member of the Army Security Agency (ASA). However, up until 2016, for some reason unknown to me, the fact that the ASA was in Vietnam was classified and we were called “Radio Research” as a cover story. When I say I was ASA in Vietnam now, people have accused me of Stolen Valor and have demanded I be arrested because “ASA wasn't in Vietnam”.
I was sent to the island of Grenada for President Reagan's “invasion”. Since there was nothing for me and the others in my MOS (Counterintelligence) to do there, we worked on our tans and played a lot of beach volleyball. Since my experiences differed from Clint Eastwood's in his movie “Heartbreak Ridge” and I posted about it on social media, people have accused me of Stolen Valor and have demanded I be arrested .
At various times people have demanded I be banned from social media sites and arrested for my Stolen Valor, citing one or all of the reasons I have cited.
I admit the accusations of Stolen Valor based on my experiences in Grenada being different than Clint Eastwood's in his movie anger me the most.

Why is this so big of a deal. If you know that it's a costume why waste your time. Look I am a marine veteran and can care less if some wannabe wares a coustom from the army surplus. If you have a problem with it go to the army surplus and tell them to stop selling them oh that's Wright they have every Wright to sale them as the clowns have to buy them . Look the bottom line is these people didn't make the cut.

Just because it's no big deal to you doesn't mean I should think the same way. Wearing camo or a military uniform isn't a big deal to me until they cross the line by making it look official with command and unit badges, rank and name and claiming to be a vet. I suggest you take your opinion down to the local VFW hall and see what they think

The claim that Infantry only trains at Ft Benning is not true. In the past there were many different bases that trained Infantry soldiers. What is true today may not have been true in the past. MOS designations change on occasion and old often are not the same as today. Uniforms Android regulations change over time as well. During my time in service in the Army 1965 to 1975 we went through several uniform changes, MOS changes, and more. Recently anArmy NCO got stabbed for screaming stolen valor. There have been many actual veterans also accused if stolen valor. It's just foolishness and dangerous to go around accusing people. I have seen this crap all my life.
When I was a child my friends and I would use our parents old uniforms from WWII and the Korean War to play games. By today's standards by some we would have been accused. Hollywood actors could be accused. Get over it. Unless one is benefiting it's just dress up and games. Even JROTC cadets have been accused.

If you asked me those questions would you accuse me of stolen valor? If so you'd be wrong. The first question I would ask is, what's a 214? All veterans, all services know what a 214 is. I don't ask what a DD 214 is, because the DD part is too much of a hint. The only time I've asked that question to a supposed vet he said "never heard of it" . BUSTED

I am a two tour Vietnam vet and was medivaced both tours. Charlie did not want me in country. ;-) . I was a 1Lt first tour and remember going back to base camp, herding up those REMFs at gun point, putting them on a chopper, and within three days they were medivaced due to drug withdrawl . Charlie knew what he was doing making those drugs so available, in most cases free. My 2nd tour only lasted a week and as a Company CO, I was shot by an NVA with an AK47. I got my CIB but the FOs for the ARTY walked right along side me did not, as did the medics, bless them. I think they got the combat medic badge. Welcome home brother. There are fake 214s out there. I have a VA ID card. To get treatment or other services from the VA they don't ask you for your 214, it could be fake. They will go on the VA computer to see your 214. You can't fake what's on the VA computer. VA ID card is legit. Here in Montana I have veterans license plates but to get them all you have to do is show them a 214, which could be fake. So don't go by license plates. I don't see how a VA ID card can be faked

Veterans status is an option, at least in Montana. And here in Montana to get veterans plates you go to DMV and show them your 214, they don't check with the VA to see if it's real and you can fake a 214. Ask a veteran for his VA ID card, that can't be faked. That card is an option, not all vets have one. But to get that card from the VA, unlike Montana DMV, the VA doesn't ask for you to supply your 214 to them, they just go to theVA computer and verify your a veteran. If your a vet they will give you a pictured VA ID card
