I was thinking if I decide to go this route, that I would be inclined to go to Lowes and buy some 2-gang plastic electrical boxes to protect those electronic boards and the wiring from accidental damage, and keep the components free of dust, etc.
I have mine screwed under my layout flat to the under side of the plywood sub roadbed exposed and haven't had any issues so far, but your idea would give an extra bit of protection
hi james.. digikey.com or mouser.com if one doesn't have them in stock hopefully the other will. the bd20 manual will tell you the ohm rating. I think I used 1k at 1/2 watt

The base of the signal will cover a half-inch hole so you don't have too pug in the extension cord under the layout.
