Thank you so very, very much for your videos. They have been incredibly helpful physically, but also emotionally and mentally.
In early November I suffered a displaced distal fracture of the radius and ulna along with a fracture of the ulnar styloid and impingement of the median nerve. Ouch! I had an open fixation with 2 plates, screws and pins. The break was further back so I have extra long plates with 4 and 5 screws rather than the more usual 3 screws each. The head of the radius also required pins. There was no damage to the bones of the wrist. I also had carpal tunnel release surgery for the nerve repair. The surgeon described my breaks as "crushing" injuries and there were a lot of pieces to pin together and gaps in the bone to fill in. It was a bad fall. I was headed downhill at the time so there was a lot of velocity, I am 65, and I need to lose 30 pounds, and I fell on asphalt - so lots of force and, despite my vitamin D and dietary calcium protocols, my bones were not as strong as we thought. So, all in all, kind of a mess.
My surgeon is great, she did a great job and, bone strength aside 🙂, I am in good health and the surgery has healed well.
All of that did loads of soft tissue damage and regaining motion and strength has been an ordeal. This was also all happening as Covid was surging to 2,000 deaths a day. My OT contracted Covid - her fever started in the evening and I had spent an hour face to face with her in small room with closed windows. We did have masks on, but that was it. So, I quarantined for the 2 weeks and tested negative. But, I didn't feel safe with them and I am older and have had trouble shaking bronchitis, and was infected with pertussis 2 years ago, so I have been very cautious about exposure.
That left me to do OT on my own. The surgeon assessed me and okayed me to self care and gave me some basic guidance about heat, cold, massage, along with the basic exercises. That was 3 months ago.
I turned to RUclips. So many of the videos were straight teaching vehicles and far too clinical for me, others were just the same basics over and over again, and many were too awkward and annoying to sit through.
Finally, about a month ago I found yours. I have no idea why it took so long for you to show up in my searches. You were just what I was looking for!
I have been so worried because I have felt that my progress was not going well and that I would lose whatever function I could not recover in 10-12 weeks. That is what my OT and her boss both, actually said.
At 12 weeks my hand was still very swollen, fingers like sausages. It's still somewhat swollen, though better, and there is no way I can make a full fist. With heat and stretching and coaxing I can get a closed fist, but it's forced and still has a long way to go.
My thumb is a mess, the carpal tunnel area is still very tender and I have finger curl and the nerve continues to heal. The OT folk were into cranking my fingers, forcing movement and made me feel I wasn't working hard enough. They were terrible, really. I was so glad to be shed of them.
I am highly motivated to get this hand back. I am an artist and artisan craftsman. I make my living with my hands, with my fine motor skills - of both hands. This is not my dominant hand, thank God, but I have strong skills in both hands and need them. So, highly motivated.
I have been putting in hours everyday with the exercises and other therapies. Hours. And every morning I wake up with a hand I can't close, that shakes, a forearm that still aches and has flashes of discomfort in certain positions, and two scars that are still red and tender - less so, but it's all still obviously refining.
I have been so afraid that I was just having a bad result. That I just wasn't healing well - too old, too whatever. I was afraid I had lost function and I was just going to have to adapt. I have kept doing the exercises faithfully, trying, but all it seemed to do was keep my knuckles so sore I can barely touch them.
After a couple of weeks of following you I am doing so much better. The swelling is better, my knuckles are not constantly tender, I have a bit more range of motion in my wrist - I have almost normal range, but it is stiff when doing it, the bone heads are still oversize, still refining, but the wrist joint feels fairly loose.
My fingers are still very stubborn, especially that tippy tip joint, but thanks to you, I am no longer feeling doomed! The gentler, longer stretches are so much better and I can feel progress and much less pain!
Gosh, I know this is really long, if you are still reading, thank you! THANK YOU! I am so much more hopeful and things are coming along more - slowly, but improving.
My layman's belief was always that these things take time, that healing continues, to not give up. I am so grateful to you for sharing your knowledge and gifts.
I am from a Lebanese background and when someone cooks for you or gives you something they've done or made, "thank you" is said using the phrase, "God bless your hands."
That seems especially appropriate to say to you.

Oh my goodness! This comment means the world to me! 💕 All of what you mentioned is exactly why I do this. Thank you for sharing your ups and downs. It can be a long road both physically and emotionally but sounds like you are coming out on top with all of your hard work and diligence. Many well wishes to you and may God bless your hands so you can get back to your art. 🙏

thank you! i broke both my wrists almost 8 months ago and the middle and ring finger on my left hand are still swollen and hard to bend. Neither of them were broken it just seems to be a reaction to the wrist break. ( that wrist also popped out and they had to pop it back in and I had plates & screws and carpal tunnel done at the same time). I've watched this before on your other videos I like this video with the options too. Question... how long do I do this before I see some more improvement?

i had a lot, i mean a lot of swelling in my wrist and fingers after a wrist fracture and 2 months in a cast even after 2 months of occupational therapy and then i started to see an accupunturist 2x a week and within 24 hours after the first session the swelling very noticably went down and continued to do so after every session til now it is very slightly swollen. not even noticable by an untrained eye.

It can take up to a year for swelling but if the joints are stiff and motion is limited that could be why.

question, my 5th phalange was crush by a heavy object, hence a spiral fracture. Im at 3 months and 7 days healed so far.
I followed your instructions for the buddy taped finger for wrapped stretching etc. Im concerned how much pressure to put on the pinky to stretch the joints and connections. The Xrays show alot of healing inside but the outer layer doesnt look like solid bone yet. I brace the pinky with my other hand on 2 sides for support then gently bend at each joint. I use warm water and do this 2 times a day. I just dont want to be too easy on it, but I dont want to break something again. Being a spiral fracture, Ive wanted to be safe and go to 4 months before pushing stretching too much
    Any thoughts ?

I tore my tendon in my middle finger from a fall last month. All my fingers are stiff to different degrees. For now I'm only aloud to try to bend the tip to ensure that the tendon does stick to scar tissue. How do you suggest is the best way to massage scar adhesions? Can you make a video?
