I was just gonna say that, there's other stuff on wesspur or tree stuff that'll help you climb a bit better as far as srt kits go, most mechanical devices are 10mm to 13 mm so maybe up your rope a bit 11mm , they have a camo rope called" predator" that's just under 11mm , like 10.8 mm I believe. Also the"unicender"is a good device to use instead of the gri gri , there's no sit back at all it grabs right away, anyway I could go on and on but good luck on that tho

I’m an arborist and stumbled on this video. I use throwballs everyday. Your paracord is tangling because of how you stow it and it’s probably new and not very flexible. Figure out a system where you flake the line into; we use throw cubes. Also look into throw ball dedicated line. Various websites geared for arborists have these.

I enjoyed your video. I am going to purchase a harness, rope, and all the associated gear to climb in the next few days. I will probably do a little saddle hunting with it, but mostly I am just out to learn a new skill to play with. @@PrivilegedBowhunter I'll be watching for your videos. Things got serious today. I purchased a saddle, rope, and a few other things. It's funny, but I knew it all as I was driving to the store, but everything I knew must have flown out the window at some point because I was as dumb as a rock once inside the store. By the time I got home with my new gear I was totally confused. After an hour or two of tinkering with everything I was wearing the saddle and trying to get a feel for things before hoisting myself off the ground for the first time. I did not get a decender today because I wanted to know more about them before spending more money. I regret that decision already. If the weather permits my plan for tomorrow is to run a rope over a tree limb in my back yard and to begin learning the basics of lifting and lowering myself, but I won't get more that a few feet off the ground for a while. My main goal for now is just to familiarize myself with the equipment and stay out of the hospital. Old geezers like me don't bounce very well.
Fellow Submariner here, retired in Oregon I plan on saddle hunting this year for the first time for elk. I Have been successful for Muleys and Elk with a tree stand, I am looking at this option to be able to get deep in the woods on multi day backpack hunting. I am going to document my learning process too. Awesome video man. Love the humbleness.

Man thanks for the vid. I’ve been going back and forth with the whole saddle rig set up or a lone wolf custom gear hang on. If I was going to throw out a recommendation it would be climbing sticks and a lineman’s rope. But then again I don’t think that’s what you’re going for with being on the islands. Crazy hikes with the added weight and less than ideal trees to hook them up on are probably a pain too. That tethrd rig looks slick as hell though!!

Great content, I have been one sticking for a few years. I run a stick only and 3 step aider and a seperate platform but I have a few areas of public that SRT may be better for pre sets.
One sticking is definitely the way to go
Great video, glad to see a reasonable size rope not 11mm. Mountain guide/hunter, here are a few recommendations. First I put your backup hitch on the brake strand of the rope below the device it is easier to tend the device that way; second I wold recommend tying a bite not on the brake strand every 5-6 feet, and a final one at hunting height that blocks the device, that way if the device fails you won't fall all the way to the ground. I am working on generating all of my skills into content for this community. Climb safe and happy hunting.
Thanks for the input brother, I'll be looking out for your content. I'm conflicted with back up means especially since I switched to the madrock and their manual says not to back it up.
@@PrivilegedBowhunter I personally wouldn't use a friction hitch behind it as I'm ascending, I would and do, tie that bite knot whenever I go hands free and I'm hanging on the rope. All the devices are "assisted" brake devices and because of that I add one more level of redundancy. You said it best 2 is 1, 1 is none.

Whats good bro. Glad to see another brotha on that saddle lyfe! Yea that SRT is a lil too much bruh. Just look at the "One stick" method. way easier. That SRT is mainly for people who have pre set trees they hunt. One stik is way more versatile. Looking forward to watching more videos!

Awesome vid srt or drt was definitely alot easier for me to catch on to than one stick method but getting better at one stick. My favorite by far is my tree spikes. I do need to get a throw ball for hanging preset trees but where I hunt I can climb with Spike's and rappel down and leave rope in tree if going back to hunt next morning.
Not nocking your set up but that rope might be a little on small side and will stretch even more when wet therefore putting it below limits of grig. I use 11mm rope and a mad rock safe gaurd with no slip and even that is faster in device when rope is damp.
Thanks for commenting, I believe the Grgri is designed to payout some line when you take the load off the device, and then reapply the load. The "slide a little" that I was referring to has something to do with it's belaying function. Its does the same thing with thicker climbing rope.Safeguard just arrived yesterday though so, I'll be switching to that.
I've sat in a few trees, but by no means am I proficient in srt. I learned my style from ny saddle hunter also. I went with 2 prusic knots instead of a manufactured ascender. I currently have 1 foot loop, but I'm going to try 1 foot loop each prusic to gain a little speed. I'm planning on a preset rope on my scouting day to get started.
The rattle you mentioned is 1 reason i went away from the device, and in my experience machines break. I trust ropes with a simple friction knot. Maybe its my simple mind 🤷♂️.
First suggestion would be to figure 8 your throw line , or find a retractable reel for it. My next suggestion is leaving your tag end of the climb line untied. Just a clove hitch about 2 foot from the end. That way the tag end of your climb line flips over your desired branch. I saw a video on Strider Trees. The video was Climb line basics, and at 4:30 into it. Another good hitch to learn would be the Michoican. Hope I spelled it close enough. You might want to add another wrap so it grabs harder.
Great entertainment value. Glad u r thinking about the safety as well as being quiet. Here's a few tips from being a bowhunter that saddle hunts that also has a farm & climbs 🌳 to trim & take down 🌳 from coming down on my fences.
Scott & Joe from the NY Saddle hunters r solid guys that r much different. Joe says it all the time. I'm kinda a high-bred of both when it comes to my tactics.
I've tried a few throwlines which means I've bought a few & the green Dynaglide is the best @ throwing & not tangling. I flake it into a WesSpur cube. If u use the NY Saddle code u can get 10% off on WesSpur orders in case u didn't know already. Another good thing to use is the eye to eye prusik so u can tie a 5 wrap Michoacon hitch. If u buy a longer eye to eye prusik u can even use a 6 wrap if it makes u feel better. I've tried alot of variations & settled on the Michoacon. I try not to use too much metal on my bowhunting setup as I do when I'm in a tree with my Stihl saw. This year I plan on using a foot-loop more. My goal is to do the the Alpine butterfly like u did in your video but then have the other end of the rope going over another crotch so I can hunt those busy 🌳. I have a webbed bridge & I also put another double line Oplux bridge on my main Saddle to hook into the other crotch area. Still going to come down & remove just gear just like u did in your video. Trying to be more versatile with more redundancy. Take care & be happy that your not trying to do all this in MN.
behind the grigri i put a auto block attached to my linesman loop on my saddle as a back up in case the grigri fails
I use the auto block for repelling. For the climb, and back up at hunting height I use a Schwabisch Hitch.
@@PrivilegedBowhunter i use autoblock from the time i leave the ground when doing the lone wolf hand climber method but with srt i have a climbing rated daisy chain attached from my hand ascender to my saddle as a backup
I like it, on one hand the daisy chain will add a little bulk to your setup, but it'll be more convenient because you don't have to tie a hitch.
I used this all season, but I preset a bunch of trees with paracord in the off season. I only used a throwball during season when I was going to do an afternoon hang and was fairly certain I was not likely to spook anything. Not the best for run and gun.
Run and gun is definitely out for me, if presets loops are in the tree then I can definitely see this as an option. I shot a pig last week using this set up with a madrock, but pigs can't hear anyway lol.

in the off season put up pre set paracord in trees that way your not throwing the throw ball during the hunt

Have you tried one sticking? I keep a throwball in my bag as well but if you already have your grigri in-line then one sticking isn’t a bad option at all. Can still leave a line in the tree to return to as well 👍

I run a static 10.5 mm Kernmantle and a 11.4mm double braid with no slippage with the madrock safeguard. Consider the rope you're using.
No way id accend on a prusik like that.
Check out the CT roll N lock i think its called. It's a hand Ascender with built-in pulley. I love mine

I didnt see you manually advancing the Swabish... But i assume you had to. It adds a whole lot of extra work during the ascent. And if it happens to tighten up on the way up you'll have to stop and massage the knot to free it up.
You didn't mention what climbing line you're using? I imagine if its 9 mm to 11 mm that safe guard is going to work great for you
@@PrivilegedBowhunter I see that you are using 8mm rope now. That is probably why you are experiencing slippage. Another thing, I am no expert with belay devices as in the GriGri or the Mad Rock safeguard but one thing I noticed is the SafeGuard versus The Lifeguard is, one has a spring the other one doesn't. The spring version does not engage as quickly I believe. The Safeguard does not have the spring. I do not know if a gri-gri has a spring actuator or not. Anyway, best of luck and I enjoyed your video a lot.
Oh,... And its the CT QUICK ROLL hand ascender.... Not the RollNLock.
The Schwabisch hitch is pretty cool, the belay device tends the hitch up and it grabs your climbing line if your device slips too much.
@@upstateandy Yeah, I run a setup with 10mm kernmantle (Sterling HTP) and a GriGri (not the GriGri+). No slippage at all. I think the slippage is most likely due to undersized rope. I don't generally feel the need to have any sort of hitch cord backup while climbing or descending with this, though when I get to hunting height I usually tether in (for comfort reasons) using my tether (more 10mm with an eye to eye tied in a distel). I usually disconnect the grigri entirely and tie on the climb line as a backup to the tether (little extra piece of mind).
For a beginner you bought the wrong equipment. I believe SRT is a great way to get in and out of a tree, you just need to learn much more about it. I do not run & gun so I always use presets. However, from the videos I have seen Run & Gunners usually scout the area the day before so that is when I would have set a preset. I do not know how to scout for the best tree in the dark if I were to use sticks. So most run & gun, if they did not scout the day before would wait till it was light. You are only throwing 30' or less so you only need 1 throw with a little practice. I would also do 1 isolation pull for the line in most cases. If you would have set your climbing line on the opposite end of your throw line you would have been against the tree all the way up. I like a hitch to climb on and I would ditch the Gri Gri. I would also use a foot and knee ascender and walk up the rope like a ladder against the tree. Very easy safe, quite and fast and I can climb way more trees than I can with sticks. I like big trees because I can hide better in them.
I'm new to this SRT Saddle hunting scene myself. This upcoming year will be my first time. SRT is way lighter, efficient, and safer in my honest opinion compared to other methods. I use a collapsable cube for my throw line. Also use waxed throw line it slides better and is much easier to untagle here is one of my first videos I will make more eventually on it. You set the throwline and leave in in the tree when your done. Tie the throwline to your rope and as you pull out rope the throwline stays
As an arborist we use devices with zero sitback. I have a grigri but I dont ever use it for life support.
Climbing line needs to be thicker, I wouldn’t climb on anything under 10.5mm. Yes the 8 will hold your weight technically but it’s a diameter issue, smaller diameter has more tendency to slip. And also a thing I do to add to the gr gri just add a sewn Prussick loop. I also learned from Scott and Joe at NYSH, I also have a hard time trusting equipment no matter the ratings, but having the prussic above the pretzel (it also tends itself while climbing using a foot ascender.

I don't use a prussic above because it binds too much, I use a schwabisch hitch it's much easier to adjust than a prussic

I get that click also, granted im only 170#, but the only time i take pressure off of the grgri for it to click im already attached to my tether which has a ropeman and prussik backup, and when going back to the grgri to belay down i set all my pressure on it while still attached to tether, some days i get so sketched (my mind gets to me sometimes, ive hit the ground from 25ft before) ill leave my lineman connected or use it as a 2nd tie off to a nearby branch in the canopy. I just transitioned to this this season from a climber, and i feel much safer with the ropes than with the climber and i had good faith in that summit (still use it depending on the area) but yeah, sticks aren’t even a thought i dont trust them at all. Good shit though man🤘 or should i say Bravo Zulu✊

I did purchase some 6mm TRC, but it's taking a while to get here. One of the few drawbacks of living in Hawaii I guess. I may possibly be open to purchasing more equipment, what do you have in mind?
@@PrivilegedBowhunter well I was gonna say try a petal zigzag with chicane and a notch jet step its really user friendly. beginners to advanced use it, but since you got 6mm consider getting a prusik cord and pulley for a more controlled friction hitch, and a foot ascender
@@PrivilegedBowhunter also bro most importantly make sure you tie into a solid branch union you mentioned you set up early morning when its dark be very cognizant of what you set your rope on that's the most important part I wouldn't pick a branch that's smaller then your arm in size for your situation don't set rope on dead branch either

keep your foot underneath you as much as possible while climbing, makes it a lot less work because instead of pulling yourself up, you pretty much just stand.

why do you need a knot if you have a grigri?
The knot is for redundancy, if the grgri fails, the knot SHOULD stop the fall.
