  • This is a demo of how I use the climbing method DRT (double rope technique) to saddle hunt, also known as MRS (Moving Rope System).
    I walk you through my process of selecting a tree I plan to hunt in the fall, getting a rope in it, climbing, and how I would set up for a hunt.

    Love seeing the Blake’s hitch get some love! Getchu a Hitch Climber pulley, eye-to-eye hitch cord, and a foot ascender. I think you’ll dig it

    Great job on your video and demonstrating it all on your own. Like your honesty!! You showed the pros and cons to this system, which can also relate with every other system we use. Good job 🎯

      Thanks! ... I've improved my process slightly this season by ascending using a foot loop hold instead of the hip-thrust. It is less effort and allows for bigger advancements with each step. I'll probably make a video demonstrating it.

      @@HigherElevations Yeah, I was going to mention that, since I have done SRT before. And I have found that the foot loop helps a lot.

    Nice video & well put together Andrew. I can film a hunt with a camera arm with a Tactacam remote setup ➕️ a Browning trail camera in video mode & not have that much weight to carry in. I lessened my load by riding a bike with a cart behind it that i lock up & hide. I'm also using a recurve since all my spots r pinchpoints where the terrain brings the deer closer to me. That cuts down quite a bit of weight. It's also nice since the shot process is much simpler when things happen quick.
    Earlier in the video u had great video showing that great crotch u had your climbing line on. In future videos it would be nice to have a video where u explain the pros & cons of different crotches on several 🌳 in close proximity to each other. I noticed a couple in this video where a person could of had a terrible experience if they were dead set on using them. I used to use & sometimes still do use an open Blake's self tending system using a Sterling split-tail. But it doesn’t work as well with the new 9.5 Sterling static i ordered from the NY guys. Instead I stealth stripped a Petzyl Pinto micro pulley. All i needed was to stealth strip the bottom of the oval carabiner that held the Sterling double sewn loop hitch. Those sewn eyes fit perfect into the gap of that micro pulley. That is always tied on my line. Then i stealth stripped another accessory carabiner that goes through the open beckett on the top of the pinto pulley. With about 18" of paracord which is looped around on my climbing line using an English prusik. It's just above my sewn eye I am able to get up 12' to 15' in under a minute w/o much effort. It is also a very neat & tidy look to it. I'm no spring chicken but this has really been a game changer for me. If i use the Predator line i can do an open Blakes setup with a 5' split-tail system but putting that English prusik on there & tieing off the end of my split-tail is really a much sloppier way of doing things. Of course i use a longer bridge on my saddle cuz my long arms give me 2' of pull b4 i wrap my right hand around the rope again to repeat the process. This is perfect for run & gun when u r in the woods for a whole day & may need to move to get into some hot activity. My run & gun is sometimes just 30 feet of paracord with a throwball to a lower crotch & then after i get up off the ground i can advance my throwball & paracord up the 🌳 while I'm tied in with my linesman it gives me the opportunity to advance to a hunting height crotch with an open system that i disconnect & attach to the paracord to hook my climbing line up & over w/o tieing the whole system again. The more people that can get over the learning curve will be not only safer but more mobile than carrying all that equipment & having to take it all down. Thanks again for video & hope you're onto something promising.😮

    Good video! Just curious, Dan Infalt says that hunting on top of a hill doesn’t often work in the evenings because the thermals will drop your scent down on the trail. Have you noticed this or are you hunting on the downwind side of a trail or thick backstop/background?

    • @HigherElevations
      @HigherElevations  Год назад

      Yeah that's true if the wind dies down at last light. This setup takes that into account because the main trail is on the uphill side. Bucks could easily run the ridgeline a little lower, I'd just have to hope my scent was floating over their heads or I'd be able to get a shot before they'd notice me. Thanks for the question!

    Great video! but it seems like a lot of moment and time to get up to hunting height. where with sticks you would already be in the tree and the weight of them would be better than the energy to get up.

    • @HigherElevations
      @HigherElevations  Год назад

      Thanks for the comment! Sticks are no doubt a great way to get up the tree. I like this method for a few reasons; I'm always tied in no matter what so I feel incredibly safe as soon as I leave the ground, I have less gear to mess with (just the rope), and getting out is incredibly quick & easy, especially in the dark. To your point about energy and movement, I agree it might be more with the hip thrust but there is a way to use a foot-loop with the rope and the motion is more of a vertical step up. That's a technique I have yet to try but plan to incorporate for the very reasons you mentioned. Thanks again for your comment, and happy hunting this fall!

    Why do you prefer DRT climbing over using sticks? This is my second year using DRT climbing (I love it), but I've been looking at 1 stick climbing videos. It just looks more minimalistic and could be easier to go deeper into the woods with less weight going in. Just wondering why you choose DRT over sticks..

    • @HigherElevations
      @HigherElevations  Год назад +1

      Single sticking is very appealing. I have not tried it yet but I plan to!
      I prefer DRT over sticks mainly for preset trees. For preset trees with paracord loops all I need is my rope; there is no clanking noise, the rope fits really nicely in my pack without sticking out, I'm safely tied in at all times, and descending is super easy. I can have setups all over the place and ascending & descending is faster, especially with a foot loop hold which I am now utilizing. (Not shown in this video)
      I think sticks are the way to go when you are not sure which tree you plan to hunt if you're going in somewhere for the first time, especially in the morning. Trying to get a throwline over a limb on a run-n-gun hunt is doable, and I do it (As recently as 2 days ago, actually) but it can create a lot of noise if the limb isn't a chip-shot. In most scenarios, I've already done my homework and know exactly where I'm going. But sometimes things happen and you need to change and adapt. Sticks are great for that. DRT is good but not great for run-n-gun.

    Why drt not srt I'm 60. 230lbs. Just curious?

    • @HigherElevations
      @HigherElevations  2 года назад +2

      Only two reasons. 1 it's cheaper. And 2, it's less things to mess with and bring into the woods & setup... SRT is definitely easier to get up into the tree (requires less physical excursion) and is more forgiving with limb selection. SRT seems to be more of the popular choice between the two options because of those aspects, but for me, I like the simplicity of DRT.

    Looks like more work than carrying in a treestand lol 😂

    • @HigherElevations
      @HigherElevations  Год назад

      Tends to look harder than it actually is, especially when you use a foot loop to step up instead of the hip movement. It's pretty easy and I plan on using the foot loop more... Imagine having 30 + spots / trees / paracord loops vs having a ton of different treestands. Easier to move and way less money for more options.
      If you're set in your ways and don't care to try something new, that's fine. Then isn't for you.
