Hey brother. I’m a professional arborist trained in rope access. The orientation of your shackle for your base anchor could unscrew itself when loaded. The way the rope is cinching can spin that pin.
Just use a running bowline with a long tail or Yosemite finish instead. Also 1 less piece of gear to carry. Thanks for the video.

You might want to look into a “rope walker”system as well. It’s crazy fast and you use your legs to get up the rope. Be safe brother!
@@wesblair77 yea I actually have Ben looking into it. I might be doing that this coming season. I want to keep my setup as simple as possible so I still haven’t decided what configuration I want to go with.
Personally for hunting I’d get a CT right foot ascender a SAKA mini knee Ascender and a small rope neck tether to advance your system.
It’s such a sweet setup.
I have pretty much the exact same set up. I’m glad you like it. I just bought mine and I really like it so far.

Another safety tip when you are climbing up or down just keep your tether on and just slide it down as you go that way if your climbing line breaks or the branch breaks you are still safe safety first we all want to come home to our families great vidio
Dude you’re a life saver. I’ve been struggling to get the rope girth hitched because of limbs. Didn’t think to base anchor. This is going to be my first season implementing SRT so I’m still learning a lot during this pre season prep
I’m glad this video helped ya. Always make sure your rope is in the crotch of the tree and not out on the limb when base anchoring. Also be sure the limb is alive. -Danny

Only thing I would recommend in addition to some of the other things people have already pointed out (pulleys; foot ascenders etc.) is to incorporate some kind of a back up for the belay device (an autoblock above the device is what I have in my setup). Can still rappel with this setup, except now if your belay device fails for whatever reason, you have the back up to catch you (just make sure the back up is above the belay device so as to avoid it being sucked in, which can potentially shred/slice your backup and cause it to fail in tandem with your belay system).
Rappelling is where things tend to go wrong, so adding some additional failsafes/backups into that system is always a good idea. 👍🏻

Nice climb. I like the idea of a ropeman on the footloop. Easy to adjust your length that way.
I also use a small pully to help assist with downward pull.

You are on the right track. I've been working on something similar. I will be adding a hook screwed into the base if the tree to ensure the girth hitch does not slide up. There have been many accidents over the years and this is the only issue I see here. I'm going to reroute a bowline or figure of 8 so I dont need to rely on an a piece of equipment. Just some ideas to consider. I'm always trying to improve and share.
Double wrap the base anchor. Double wrap, then make your running bowline so you have a girth hitch. Same way for pulling trees over for felling when pulling with heavy equipment using a tugger rope into the canopy and down to a base anchor.
No need for a hook

It’s a helium and I switched the cam out for an OCB, but I still use the button. Add a ROS step to each side on same strap is the best of both worlds too!
Add a foot ascender and you will be able walk up the rope even easier.

Great vidio but you should put some readiness to your system if anything goes wrong with your tether you are falling that one rope and mackanical devise breaks you are falling I saddle hunt ALOT and I always have extra safety a good ideal is puting a friction knot on your tether as well so if your devise fails you you don't fall be safe out there man
I do not want to be a nag but someone recently pointed out a clevis will work loose when you weight and unweight it. Make sure you have horseshoe part on the part on the line going up the tree and screw part on the bowline loop or figure eight section. Otherwise great set up
I also use the lifeguard belay. The reason the rope slips is because people try and use to small of a rope. You are using an 11 MM rope and I am using a 12mm rope. I do my initial set up with one stick climb. It saves having to throw a line, and sometimes there may not be any limbs on the tree I want to hunt. Then I set my hang on stand. I belay down and then leave my stand in the tree. I set my repel rope and the next day when I return, I use my srt climbing gear. I have gone to this method because I hunt on public land and sorry to say have had a few stands taken along with my sticks or ladder. Now I know my stand will be there in the morning. Using SRT is a fast and quiet way to get up a tree. I also saddle hunt and wear my saddle in my stand and also my platform. I had dropped my bow from my tree and repealed down and used my SRT to climb back up. my one stick was still attached to the tree when I dropped my bow. Things to think about saddle hunters "What will you do if you drop anything ( Bow or quiver or maybe your range finder) from your tree ?"

Yea you want to secure the side that goes over the crotch/branch to the base of the tree. You’ll figure out real quick if you secured the wrong side. Because you’ll just pull the rope down off the crotch. -Danny

Great video and awesome way to do things. My issue in my high pressured areas would be noise and movement. . Hitting the tree would cause tree leaf noise and movement. I really would like to try but a way that would be super silent
Do you really think that deer in your woods worry everytime I branch falls out of a tree? These kinds of noises are nothing to worry about, it’s the metal on metal sounds that you need to avoid… -Mark

We just use a regular arborist throw line. You can find them on Amazon or any arborist web stores. Your gonna wanna use the thinner nylon type. -Danny
Wish you’d have shown how the throw line became your main line. You got the ball up in the crotch, then tied a base anchor and I’m pretty sure you didn’t have the throw ball on that rope….just poking, but seriously how’d you attach the throw line to the rope?
@@bfriendly100 You can remove the throw ball or just Leave it on and clip your climbing rope to the line and pull it over. Most throw balls have a small strap you can clip to. Or just tie or clip your line to the ring that the grow ball is tied to. -Danny
best thing I have done so far is to replace the hawk strap with one that has an over the center type buckle.

Keep a cheap figure 8 belay device in ur pouch! They aren’t expensive and can get you down from tree if u forget or drop the safe guard

Yep, we sometimes do it while scouting if we find a spot we like or in some of the trees that we tend to hunt every year
Recently picked up a Lifeguard for use in srt. My setup is different but obviously same concept. Question is, what rope brand and size are you using as your main line? Madrock specs 8.9-11 mm. So I'm planning 3/8" Sterling HTP which is 9.5mm equivalent. Was nervous about going with a larger diameter. Thoughts?
We both use predator rope 11mm since it can also be used for DRT in a pinch. The lifeguard grips it with no problems and it has a tiny bit of elasticity so it can absorb some of the shock from a fall. -Mark
Get a chest ascender and clip it to your rope wrench its much safer along with solid carabiners for ascenders are cool too much easier set up
Ok I learned something new with the base anchor, but what length of rope do you carry to be able to do that, also your foot loop and thether look the same
We like to carry a rope that is double the length of the height you’d like to reach. Danny carries an 80ft rope but I carry a 60 footer. My sweet spot is 30ft. Danny like to get as high as humanly possible. -Mark

Looks the same because they kinda are. Actually I use my lineman’s belt as a foot loop. Both my lineman’s rope and teather are made of the same rope.
Personally I prefer to carry longer rope for these situations. A lot of the pines where I hunt will have branches like the one in this video.

Love the video. Do you ever leave presets? Throwing the ball in the dark can be extremely challenging.
Yea if I plan on returning to a spot or if I’m scouting and I find a potential spot I’ll put up a para cord preset. -Danny
I use my climbing line as my tether and my lifeguard for adjustment. Just remove your foot loop.

So this makes it clear you can use a lifeguard to repel. I've been waiting on the safe gaurd to come back in stock for what seems like forever. Any issues with the lifeguard so far ?
The issue has never been whether you can belay with it. Once it is under load it behaves the same way as the lifeguard. The issue is that when you load and unload and reload it. Everytime you load it, the rope slips a little bit. So if you are tethered in and hunting from your belay device (which I don’t advise but lots of people do it) then the lifeguard is best because it doesn’t slip like that. If you stand on your platform to adjust something and sit back into your tether, the safeguard won’t move but the lifeguard will. But if you climb your tree and use a separate tether to hunt from, then it’s all irrelevant and either one will work fine for you. Thanks for watching. -Mark
I have been using the Lifeguard for a little over a year with the predator 11mm rope. I’ve experienced zero slip, I would imagine it’s more apparent with thinner ropes.
This past weekend i used it as my tether as well with no complaints.

Leave the belay device attached to the repel rope after you get down. You will never lose it, or leave it at the truck again.
What length of rappel rope did you use and how high were u?
When using SRT you want your rope to be about double the height of where you are going to catch a limb to pull your rope up so you can girth hitch it easily. -Mark
Am I wrong in assuming that it seems like you could cut down on an entire strap by using your tether as your foot strap? it is basically the same set up. Am I wrong? Or any reason you would not do this?
No your not wrong, there’s quite a few ways to do the same thing. I often use my tether. But it’s always good to have a backup. I like to leave my tether in my tree with my platform and camera arm in situations that I’m going to come back to it, that’s when that second tether or lineman rope comes in handy. -Danny

He wasn’t actually hunting for this video, it was just for demonstration. It can be done very quietly.
I hate putting the platform on pines.
They dig in great, but just “set” it, twice. Set it, then Unset it and retighten the strap……some pines might want it set 3 times, but set it with your hands first anyway, always.
@bfriendly100 generally I set it twice then do the foot set once I am fully tied in to the tree. I am very safe with my climbs I don't really like to do them I prefer to be on the ground.

No there’s no need for a fall arrest system, because the saddle in itself is a FPS fall prevention system. You can’t fall when your lines are always tight.

how long is your static rope?

You could have just used the Ropeman instead of the hand ascender 😂
No cause the ropeman doesnt grip well onto a rope when its already weight bearing. A ropeman 2 would work but dont have one of those. Also the hand ascender gives you a handle. You can jerry rig it n be more minimal but there are definitely benefits to the hand ascender -mark
Instead of the bowline to make a loop for your Clevis for a base anchor, couldn’t you just tie a bowline to make a base anchor?
You could do that yes. But prefer a figure 8 to create a loop, with a quick link attached
I always use two slings and steel carabiner or maillon rapide as an anchor on the bottom of the tree.
I wouldnt trust that shackle.

or you could do JRB style and just use rope and karabiner like a cheap bad A
JRB methods are invetted and untested and can be extremely dangerous when used by someone inexperienced. Ask Dane Purcell about it… oh nevermind, you can’t because he died while using JRBs methods. I’ll stick to the methods that arborists have been using for decades. -Mark
What if you drop your hand ascended or something. Is there a back up way to descend?
The hand ascender is only for going up, you can’t drop the belay devices as it’s always under tension which is your way down.

Also there’s way more expensive belay devises and ascenders. The ones used in this video are the least expensive ones during the time this video was made. I think I paid $80 for my lifeguard. -Danny
