    This song is a eulogy. Layne Staley is telling you what's up with him. Where he's going, and why he's going there. I nearly cry every time. I was going to leave it at that, but it also bugs me that Vin didn't let (and I choose that wording purposefully) this song speak to him. A small cry from a deep well of pain.

    Layne did in fact Die of a Heroin overdose. He said that this song was about his addiction.(he even said that his music to n=him was a spiritual mission.) The River of deceit is about how a lot of addicts are told they what they do is a choice and all they have to do is choose to stop. The deceit part is how they often deceive themselves into thinking they don't have a problem and that everyone else is wrong and they can stop. It actually one of the most beautiful songs about how addiction can really drown not only the addict but the people they love. Think of it this way the Deceit is that the people who love the addicts think that it's an easy decision and getting clean is just a matter of saying no, while most addicts act like they don't have a problem but, in reality they know they do but they don't want to tell people that in reality they are terrified that if they stop the physical withdrawals will kill them so they constantly deceive themselves into thinking they have control when they know they don't. Hence the line I could either burn (continue with keeping up the act) or cut of my pride and by some time (I.E let go of my ego and admit I've lost control.)

  • @andrewc0128
    @andrewc0128 6 лет назад +6

    Yes, Layne died of a drug overdose, heroin to be specific. River (veins) of lies. Learn a bit of the draw heroin has for users, as well as the terms used surrounding it to appreciate what Maybe felt.
    Our pain, is self chosen. (In Layne's case, was it? Yes, he chose to do heroin the first time, but almost immediately the lure of the drug was stronger than his choice.)
    I could either burn (light up) or cut off my pride and buy some time (get help)
    A head full of lies is the weight (lies of being able to quit when he wants) tied to my waist (drowning him (in the drug).
    ....
    I could either drown (in the river of the drug) or pull of my skin (no place to inject heroin) and swim to shore (safety)
    Now I can grow a beautiful shell (the needle can't penetrate shell) = a recovered Layne.
    Then he closes with the chorus over and over (admitting defeat?)

    In his later interviews, Layne straight up said "I know it is going to kill me, but if i stop i'll die anyway" basically when you've been strungout on heroin for that long, there is no high, you're only using it to avoid getting dope sick, which is one of the most painful experiences you can have, and can lead to death.

    I was pretty disappointed with this review I feel like it really went right over their heads...the guitarist is Mike Mccready from Pearl Jam and the drummer (I cant place his name is from Screaming Trees. They made this band as a side project DURING Alice in Chains as a effort to get them all of drugs . Layne wrote most the songs on this album himself, River of Deceit is written based off the Prophet which is a book from the 1920s, and the song matches so well with the Chapter about pain, Layne was said to be reading this book when he joined Mad Season. I feel like y'all miss out so much on this one, it fits so well with his life at this point and myself facing the same sadness in life, I relate so much to this song personally. Anyone who takes the time to read up on the book and even on Layne himself would see just how beautiful this song really is and how close to home it was for him.

Something down the road will remind them of this song and his lifes predicament. theyve now gleamed a touch of staleys perspective on what he was fighting. I think the songs beautiful, but sometimes its fucking torture too. fun review regardless. i dug how you genuinely mull over the tune, and this isnt the only song you get such a decent dialogue moving. subbed and good day.

    The meaning of Mad Season: River of Deceit as sung by Layne Staley.
    Start off by saying this is about Layne’s drug habits particularly with Heroin! Think about it: The river(blood flow in your veins) takes down the Deceit (Heroin). If you read the lyrics now with this in mind and counter the fact this eventually led to Layne’s death is poetic. He KNEW he had a problem and was conveying that to the listener. My pain is self chosen. Pull off my skin and swim to shore…Heroin addicts pick at their skin. Shore represents being off the drug…now I can grow a beautiful shell (New Skin) for ALL TO SEE. Listen again with this in mind.

    Addiction = Slow Suicide
    Something I'd like to say to any of those that have never personally found themselves in the throws of addiction. This is not meant to be a knock on you for your lack of knowledge in the subject but the days of saying an addict, and I'm speaking of a "seasoned addict" if you will is a choice and they do it to themselves is not entirely true. Yes, at first you make the choice for whatever reason to try it but depending on your family history and some other personal factors it eventually becomes bigger than ones self and cannot be battled alone without professional help and a support system of loved ones, friends and family long-term. . Someone with many years fighting the battle and the time it takes to reprogram from what's "normal" brain chemistry. Eventually it becomes more powerful then the sub conscience thought of eating, sleeping, or parenting as in why you see a mother to a newborn taking a hit before feeding the child, if you think that's normal choice I don't know where you are from. In the depths of addiction, when it has become all encompassing, it literally consumes every minute of your day and every fiber of your being. It becomes so layered in physical and emotional dependence that without it you cannot do the most common every day tasks we take for granted and emotionally and psychological that it can take the sub conscience need for food, hygiene, health, love, relationships. It fills that part of the brain that serves our most animalistic instincts so running out or being out of your drug is your brain thinking you're committing suicide and alarms go off, everything else is put on hold.
    The drug/s become a virtual best friend for bad or good, and trying to quit is like saying goodbye to the love of your life/best friend usually your only friend by now, not to mention after going thru hell with withdrawals, now you have to learn how to walk, talk, eat, sleep, drive, socialize.....etc without "your friend". They say the age you start using is the age you remain inside your head while your body ages.

      @@JoeL-nm2hm Hey Joe, do you really think so? I always assume no one is going to be able to understand what the hell I am blabbering about, lol. I try and deal with my OCD and ADHD (meaning I am very meticulous at taking forever to screw things up, ha) That's parallel with living in recovery which I am very passionate about, being that addiction has been a better part of most of my life and talking about it helps myself and if someone who is suffering can relate or maybe even help all the better.
      Sidenote~ Born and raised in Seattle, Washington and my cousin was a well known tattoo artist and shop owner besides being in a band during the late 80's and early 90's. So that was my in to getting to meet and get to know so many of the great bands and members from that era, including Layne Staley and Mike Starr from Alice in Chains. Thanks for your comment btw.

Or being dismissed, especially when becoming vulnerable to someone hoping they will understand (like the music that got you thru when nobody else was there for you). Im assuming the people who recommended this to them genuinely felt like they would be heard.. Music is special in that way to many people. Especially when the music is designed to provoke the same, if not.. Similar emotions in the ones who listen. Much love brother, hope youre doing well.

    His piece on pain ends:
    Much of your pain is self-chosen.
    It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
    Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity:
    For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,

The whole point to the band forming was 3 clean guys, trying to help Layne see that being sober was a good thing, too bad it didn't work, Layne wrote this song because he had come to terms with his addiction, that he had went too far and there was no turning back, AFTER LAYNES ex fiance DEMRI Parrot pron"pear roe" died of a heroin overdose Layne totally gave up on living, he had NEVER STOPPED LOVING DEMRI. Great pick. As a supergroup, this is second only to Temple of the Dog (perhaps the greatest single album super group of all time). There is nothing to say really. Layne's vocals are amazing, his tortured soul comes through in every song he songs. 10/10
    Wintersun-Loneliness (Winter) if you want something else with equal emotional weight behind it....
    And yes I am trying to get a Thrash alliance going. Just waiting for it get put up on the V&S site. Sent the logo to Vin and everything. So look for that in the next few weeks. Time being I've thrown in with Pony (cause she's awesome).
    Layne did die of a heroin overdose, its a very sad story. He could not beat it and basically closed himself off to all his friends because he was so ashamed, he died alone and ashamed and I can't really think of many sadder things than that.... One of the last things I think Layne recorded was a really great cover of Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd with Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine (the band went by Class of 1999). Not really one to react to, but check it out on your own time,. Really cool cover.
    I can't believe you all didn't like this. Don't get you two sometimes.......

The vocals are great. The lyrics are on-point (maybe only understood by people who have had their own demons with H). I have dabbled myself and realized how much, no matter how intelligent you are, that you will absolutely lie to yourself about your addiction. My brother has struggled for decades, he's ripped me off and most of his family. Everybody keeps saying shit like 'It's his choice to fuck his life up like this.' And to a point, I agree. But, nobody that has never dabbled in this truly understands. It completely changes the way your brain works. You will lie to yourself and to your loved ones! 😢😢

    PLEASE DO MORE RESEARCH FOR GODS SAKE! this is not country. this is a grunge supergroup that was put together to try and help Layne stay clean and focus on music. It’s his cry for help and putting all his feelings/emotions and demons out there for everyone to see. and the fact that you guys couldn’t let that touch you in the slightest is unbelievable. you can go into a deep talk and try to bring some deep meaning out of a Cannibal Corpse song but not a song that truly does speak about the emotional hurt of a real person. And he was in fact a heroin junkie and i didn’t know Layne personally but im sure he in fact did want to get clean as he had tried numerous times before. if it was that easy then nobody would be dying of overdoses everyday. please try and have some compassion for people or at least do some research on what your talking about before you make ignorant comments. you guys are really falling off for me, videos just aren’t what they use to be. just please focus on the music and lyrics and not how it ties into your life or the real world because that is NOT the point.

    it is Layne Staley and the band also has Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, but this is not freaking country. Listen to "Wake Up" and "I Don't Know Anything" by them, more like your type of songs.

    Good song, the entire album is really good. This song is rather subdued & doesn't need a lot of changes. Not all good/great songs have a lot of tempo changes, or any other changes. I love many songs that are just straight up all the way through, no major changes. The album this song is from, has a certain flow to it & should be listened to front to back. Check out the "Live at The Moore" concert video too. Btw, I was thinking that you could easily knock out 2 shorter songs in 1 video. A couple of 4+ min. songs instead of one 8+ min song. Just a thought. :) The Oath by Mercyful Fate awaits your arrival. No Sense, &/or Rain by Candlebox too.

    Alice in Chains is one of my top 3 of all time favorites... Layne Staley was such a beautiful, yet tortured soul. It really came through in his vocals and music. This side project Mad Season is such a different take from AiC's dark and heavy tone, but still carries the same melancholy of the former. PLEASE DO WINTERSUN - LONELINESS !!

    Watched this again... was reminded why I can't sub, and rarely check in.....flat out disregard. Vin and Sori have a way to go in accumulating a musical frame of reference.... severely handicapped. It's not about tastes, you literally don't know what you are hearing.

  • @johncampbell756
    @johncampbell756 6 лет назад

    Layne was sober when he wrote this. This was a band by four men from other bands. Each member was in recovery from addiction.
    Layne Staley of Alice in Chains (Vocals) relapsed and ODed.
    Mike McCready - Pearl Jam (guitars)
    Barrett Martin - Screaming Trees (drums)
    John Baker Saunders - The Walkabouts (Bass) relapsed and ODed.
    Great song. Not country. His pain is self chosen because he is an addict, he chose to do drugs.

    I always remember buying this album. I was in 11th grade when it came out. I had just gotten my drivers license. After school I asked my mom for ten bucks and to borrow her car. I drove to Tower Records and purchased it. I loved this album. I was a mega Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains fan. I still am. Maybe more today than ever. This song is excellent.

    Songs touch everyone differently. Y'all say you will never play it again...but it is maybe the song I play the most. It's not filled with the best of this or that, but it opens up a really good mood space for spending time with my thoughts. I typically see what is bringing me down, I determine the value of what I allow to bring me down, and then choose to free myself of it. Deceit can lead you into what is good for another, if you let it...but is detrimental to yourself.

    Devil Doll - Mr. Doctor
    Devil Doll is an Italian-Slovenian experimental rock band formed in 1987 by the mysterious "Mr. Doctor". The band has gained a cult following, taking influences from gothic rock, classical and Slavonic folk music, and fronted by the sprechgesang of Mr. Doctor himself. The band is notable for very lengthy epics, none under 20 minutes
