The lyrics to this are heartbreaking. A man in the throws of addiction who has hopes about becoming clean but talking about how he thinks is doomed, lying to himself and past saving. "I could either drown or pull of my skin and swim to shore, now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see." if only he learnt to swim RIP brother.
Vocals: Layne Staley - Alice in Chains Guitar: Mike McCready - Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog Drums: Barrett Martin - Screaming Trees Bass: John "Baker" Saunders It's a super group brother. One of the best fuckin albums that came out of Seattle in the 90's. Love this album...but it sad, literally half the band is dead from drug addiction. RIP Layne and Baker.
The “self chosen pain” Layne sings about in this song comes from the book “The Prophet” by Khalil Gibran which Layne was reading around the time Mad Season got together - at least that’s what Mike McCready says in one of his interviews back then :)
This is the story of Layne acknowledging his soon to come death, that he knows it is evident ,and he also acknowledges he's too far .gone, and unable to prevent it at this point .... It's so beautiful and heartbreakingly sad. RIP Layne. 😢😢😢
The meaning of Mad Season: River of Deceit as sung by Layne Staley. Start off by saying this is about Layne’s drug habits particularly with Heroin! Think about it: The river(blood flow in your veins) takes down the Deceit (Heroin). If you read the lyrics now with this in mind and counter the fact this eventually led to Layne’s death is poetic. He KNEW he had a problem and was conveying that to the listener. My pain is self chosen. Pull off my skin and swim to shore…Heroin addicts pick at their skin. Shore represents being off the drug…now I can grow a beautiful shell (New Skin) for ALL TO SEE. Listen again with this in mind.
If you want to hear the best album of the grunge era, it's the album "Temple of the Dog." It's a super-group album (Chris Cornell on Vocals, members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, etc.), recorded before either band was "super", and almost every song is amazing. Just start at the beginning with "Say Hello to Heaven" and go on from there.
I love this song. Its the perfect song to sit back and reflect on oneself. Its lyrically inspired by the book "The Prophet" by Khalil Gibran which he references in the song heavily. Its a spiritual journey for him while dealing with his drug issues. Its sad in the end he succumbed to them. Mad Season is kind of a grunge supergroup with Layne from AiC, Mike M the guitarist from Pearl Jam and drummer Barrett from The Screaming Trees. I think you'll like "I dont know anything" by them which sounds very much like an AiC song.
That’s the GREAT LAYNE STALEY on the vocals from ALICE IN CHAINS... try some other songs from the album, which are much grungier and heavier I don’t know anything, I’m above, Artificial Red...
It is tragic, people need to see under the drug heroin and how it get into this country and who is behind its distribution, the 10s of thousands of deaths laid right at the feet of US govt and its CIA pushers, now today in 2022 there doing it with fentanyl.
I like how the vocals are recorded naturally, without doubling/tripling the voice. AIC vocals got too muddy after a while and i like hearing layne's natural voice.
Layne wrote most (if not all) of the lyrics for this album and they are much more personal than his AiC stuff. "Lifeless Dead" is about losing his girlfriend to an overdose while "Wake Up" is him trying to talk himself into quitting drugs. All of the songs on this album are well worth a listen.
I Don’t Know Anything, Wake Up, Lifeless Dead and Long Gone Day are my favorites on this album. This song , to me, is abt someone who wants to change, but doubts they can change. “ Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see”, a beautiful outside, but someone different on the inside. Just my take on it. Great thoughtful reaction. Wish they could have made another album.
Meee also, I cry every single time, so tragic but beautiful song!! We all love and miss Layne Staley ❤️😇 RIP and the bass player too John Baker Saunders 😇🤘🌹🎸 love Mad Season!!
Same. I weep for the loss of one of our generation's voices. For the loss of those innocent days. And for how Layne thought he couldn't pull himself to shore before it was too late.
I forgot to add, Above (the album) is pretty fantastic, and quite a departure from the rest of the Seattle Sound. Granted there are some Seattle Sound tracks on there, but there's a lot of somber songs. Try out Lifeless Dead. It's got a weird verse pattern that will throw you off at first, but it's a really good song!
When I found this song again after many years as an adult, I begun to tear up a little because I knew I have listened this somewhere sometime, and then I remembered when I heard it it was when I was a kid on 1995 so its nostalgic and sad at the same time thank you Layne for giving us your music you will not be forgotten never
His voice is so original .. first line, knowing apparently nothing, “is that the singer from (AIC)…” yes yes it is and this whole album was magical and still is. Also, you will never get tired of this. Layne delivered magic. He said, “now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see..” we did see his beautiful shell, he didn’t.
It has Mike McCready from Pearl Jam Khalil Jabran The Prophet is the prophet. It was after and before the last couple songs he did for Alice In Chains and he was also in another band called Second Coming briefly.
This came out in 95 I believe with the band being Pearl Jam minus Eddie Vedder. Mark Lanegan the singer from Screaming Trees (another great vocalist of the grunge scene) joins them on Long Gone Day which is another great reflective track. Has some slow mellow jazz vibes to it
Mad Season was a side project to try and get Layne clean off Heroin. Didn't work, unfortunately. The lyrics are devastating when you know what eventually happens to him.
It's better you were surprised. I recommended Mad Season and expressed it was a side project, but don't know of who from. A different vibe from most AIC, though not far off their later, mellower stuff. Beautiful, poignant song. I think you got it right about the lyrics and video.
RIP: Layne & Demri Mark and Baker... 'Above' is among the VERY best albums, ever. Layne did the artwork on and in it. The cover is a painting Layne did of Demri & himself. Bittersweet memories... Life is truly a birdsong... 🕊🕊🕊🕊>🤘 🌬 🕯🕯🕯🕯>⌛
Awesome band, sadly only one amazing album! Check out Wake Up! There’s also a live album/dvd and all the songs are on their YT channel. Awesome stuff. I believe they initially came together as an effort to keep Layne off drugs....😔
I can't argue much w/ that top 3. Cornell, Dio, and Amy Lee all have cases too. Never did get back to APC-Passive. Jersh would also love the Doomed from the newest album.
Mad Season os one of those ‘90s “supergroups” whose members I always mix up. They tend to put out an album, sometimes two if all the members survived long enough (unfortunately only half of this band made it through G.W. bush’s admin-drummer, Barrett Martin, from Screaming Trees, “I Nearly Lost You” is probably their biggest sing and has a video, also you’ll get introduced to their vocalist, Mark Lanegan, whose projects I probably have recommended and probably will continue to recommend; guitarist, Matt McCready, from Pearl Jam.) Mad Season put out a single studio album titled “above,” it has striking black on white album art that I frequently stopped to look at while working when I worked in record stores. The art was apparently drawn by Layne Staley, I don’t know if he has a background in visual art or not, but the art has that amateur style you’d on hand-drawn flyers or zines, (especially radical zines promoting socialism or anarchism.) Bit after all that, I never really got into Mad Season or Alice In Chains. The closest I get to that side of “grunge” is Screaming Trees, Pearl Jam, and Candlebox, “Far Behind,” “Change,” or “It’s Alright” (all three have videos.) I saw Candlebox supporting the “Happy Pills” album, and Second Coming opened the show, they apparently have ties to Staley. I thought Candlebox were pretty great but wasn’t that impressed by Second Coming though they weren’t bad.
That's awesome you realized who the singer was right out of the gate. Good job bro. He's the best. I think you are spot-on about the meaning of the lyrics . They aren't actually that well-known. Check out I don't know anything. Another amazing song
And now... for some Jazz. Mad Season - Long Gone Day ruclips.net/video/7MwK4tkG87g/видео.html Layne Staley (Alice In Chains), Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees), Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees) on drums/percussion. Another supergroup project of the time was Temple Of The Dog. Temple Of The Dog - Say Hello To Heaven. ruclips.net/video/SXOzGY46In0/видео.html Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) on vocals, with Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) singing backup vocals.
I believe this band was formed after AIC broke up, then AIC got together after Mad Season finished their tour and did the album Grind. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I dont expect many to know this band or realize this song is by them being sung by Layne so it probably won't get a lot of attention sadly because its a beautiful song. But for a more well known "supergroup" of the Seattle scene id go with Temple of the Dog (basically Pearl Jam and Soundgarden combined) as have probably been requested 100 times already along with Soundgarden. Say Hello 2 Heaven and Hunger Strike will blow you away.
Love to see someone react to the criminally overlooked band from the Grunge era - Screaming Trees. Dollar Bill or Shadow Of The Season. Mark Lanegan had a voice to rival Chris Cornell, Layne and Eddie Vedder
you mention in an older video that you're familiar with some grunge bands so maybe you should check Temple Of The Dog and see if you can recognize who's in it... you've probably herd Hunger Strike. if you haven't check it out, if so check Say Hello To Heaven or Pushing Forward Back or Call Me A Dog... there are a couple more great songs in their album but those are like their top 4 songs
Off topic, not sure if you've ever heard it, but I wanted to request that you check out the song "Stone the Crow" by the band Down. Down is a super group of sorts with Phil Anselmo, Pantera's singer on lead vocals.
Mad Season is an absolutely incredible supergroup,. Most of their music is pretty down-tempo. The song Wake Up is actually a song I used as an alarm clock for years because it starts out nice and mellow, fading in, then gets louder. Absolutely love that song and always will. This band was a supergroup of addicts, all trying to get clean... so sad that half this group died from their drug use. Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Barrett Martin of the Screaming Trees, John Baker Saunders of The Walkabouts, Layne Staley of AIC. Mark Lanegan of the Screaming Trees did vocal work with them too.
Self-explanatory. Too bad they only made one album. Making me feel old super jersh! Lol I was 19 when this song aired on MTV( remember that lol) FF to 46 and I still get the chills. 🖤🖤🖤 Addiction is self chosen
Great album .. Shame they only did one . Others have filled u in on the supergroup, other members . They did a show at the Moore Theatre in 95 where they all shine . Artificial Red , Wake Up , Long Gone Day , Lifeless Dead .. The whole show/ album is 🔥.. very jazzy/ bluesy rock 👍
RIP Layne 💔 PLEASE react to Wake Up not many people have reacted to it it's such a deep beautiful song, the lyrics are very meaningful I LOVE this song, (it's about his heroin addiction)
The thumbnail looks like Jason Newstead (sic?) on the right. Couldn't be? Anyhow almost 20 years Layne is gone-and Chris Cornell recently and others:-(
You video goes down in volume the whole way through... like a very very slow fade out... now I have the volume up all the way on my Bluetooth headphones... or is it that I just got too high? 🤣🤣🤣
Pull off my skin and swim to shore. Now i grow a beautiful shell for all to see. Pull off the real me and create a person that people want to see. Depression and drug use. 😢😢❤❤❤
Layne staley is behind only Maynard in m opinion as greatest live male vocalist of all time, no one is better LIVE those two are by far most talented male vocalists followed by Aaron lewis, that's the top three
Loved the commentary but the volume was super low compared to other reaction videos i watch. You dont have to take my advice obviously but higher volume for the song would be appreciated, at least by me.
You should just title this video as a reaction to finding out that the lead singer of mad season is also the lead singer of Alice in chains. Cuz you missed the whole first verse

fuck i love this reaction!, sure i've had a few drinks while going on this Layne Staley run again... tumbs up my man, RIP LAYNE!
