It's April 5th, 2024.... 22 years ago today , Layne Staley left this world. He knew he was at the end of his life, and believed there was no turning back. He didn't want to die. He certainly didn't want to die alone, even begged the last person who saw him alive not to leave him alone.
Layne's body wasn't discovered until 2 weeks after he succumbed to a speedball overdose, and it was his own mother who found him.
May he have finally found the peace he couldn't find while alive.
[..... your voice still echoes, Layne 🎶]
🫶
Thank you for your beautiful words 🖤
I Pray that he was right with God, I hope to meet him in Heaven when my time here is up. God Bless YOU!!!
You make me cry 😢
@emilianogabaldo8398 He's at peace, though, and with Demry
I am 48 years old, I miss those times
Miss him so much and never met him. Seeing him here, he is not beyond the point of recovery. It’s the turning point just before he cannot be helped. In only a year, he was almost gone. He warms my heart with his voice, brings tears to my eyes, makes me miss my childhood and the simpler life we had. I love this song. It’s my favorite song in the world.
You're totally right, the difference between this performance and the MTV unplugged gig, is like night and day. Dude weighed 6 stone when he died, so so sad.
One of the best voices in music history. This is one of his best performances during his descent
IKR, probably the best in rock history
@@TheStepmonkey To many. To many sad tragic tales on this rock. The lies greed and slight of hand world does something to us all. RIP to the ones that help us get through it. Or help us grow. Rad energy ang hugz to you all🤙
descent? they were all fresh out of rehab at this point and very much sober.
@northmanlogging2769 Layne was high during this gig,.
who cares..enjoy@@Clowders15
He wrote a lot of good lyrics but in my humble opinion, these are the most beautiful he ever wrote. This song means a lot to me. Thanks Mike for bringing these brilliant musicians together 🙌
It’s mostly from the book the prophet by Kahlil Gibran. A good read.
Honestly have to say one of the best songs ever written and recorded this song makes me homesick to a place that doesn't seem to exist #rip #Layne and John#Mad#Season
Sean Knox and Mike Starr
Deep man
"This song makes me homesick for a place that doesn't seem to exist." Wow. Well done. I feel the same.
I feel ya! Sure does to me as well..
Warm feeling of sadness
I absolutely adore mikes guitar tone and his style of playing. also the recording is crystal clear ..... this is ace
You don’t listen to Layne, you download him into every cell of your body where he exists in your mind and spirit forever.
Exactly.
Omg I'm.crting so hard this is so true
Layne is very present in this video - his eyes are open, he is looking around and not hanging onto the microphone stand for dear life. Love it! In a lot of other videos his eyes are closed for the whole song, he is clutching the microphone stand for support and his voice lacks strength - he looks so sick. Hoping that this gentle guy has found peace and solace.
I think i read somewhere that there was a period during Mad Season where he was fully clean, so that might explain it. I agree, he looks good here.
You're probably right. The idea behind getting Layne into the band was to give him the opportunity to play in a sober environment. Mike McCready spoke about it with Barrett Martin. They also gave other musicians the same opportunity. John Baker Saunders also played with them at the same time as Layne - he also passed away. @@withmygoodeyeclosed
His weight looks a little better and his hair is up - I know that sounds like a tiny thing but once he started using again he started to inject on his forehead because he was so hard pressed for good veins, and after this he almost always had his hair down to cover it, kind of like how he always wore fingerless black gloves from this time period onward to cover up the marks on his knuckles. There's such a huge difference between how he looks here and how he'd look in the videos from the self-titled album, let alone how he looked on Unplugged. This was probably the last chance for him to get clean and make it out healthy - once he started using again this time, the bottom fell out for his body very, very fast.
It's horrific to think about what he went through with his addiction - such an incredibly sad end for such a talented guy. At least he is at peace now. @@silverwheel
No matter how ill he was, he never lost his voice's ability to express his pain. We miss you. Rest easy
Layne was very nervous during this show.
He kept saying , "I hope I don't f-uck this up."
He was absolutely brilliant.
I miss you so much Layne.
Rest in Peace forever brother.
@John Wright you sound as smacked out of your mind as Layne was
@@cameronwhitemusic6 lmfao my thoughts exactly. I'm sure Layne has paid more than enough dues to "Gadre ÈL". I'm sure his spot has been safely secured time ago.
The pain in his face and voice. It’s almost too much to witness
It brings on the waterworks for sure.
Layne is really the best singer ever. This tender, gentle voice here is so warm and full. In contrast to his beast mode stuff, which is equally amazing. And the lyrics. Calming. Heavy heart. What an incredible human. Rest in power, dude. Wow.
This is gold.
Due_ SoLiD GoLD!! 🔶✨🔸✨🔶
At the 40 second mark u can see the hurt.. the saddness.. the sorrow. Begging for his addiction not to drive him into the ground.. damnit Layne! I wish i could of rescued u..
Most definitely
Pure gold
Platinum, actually 👍💪🏻
Layne will always be the GOAT
I love this video!!! It shows his face and expressions so clear!!! One of my favs!!!!
Speedball in here boy n hard...
He looks content and fully aware
He hi asf but he is beautiful regardless absolutely genuis
He was so suffering..that’s terrible. Poor Layne. Poor dear Layne...
Look at the 40 second mark.. his face.. so sad.. full of sorrow.. wanting someone to help him.. but he was so far gone.. damn Layne!! I wish so bad i could of helped u!!!
R.I.P John Baker Saunders. Your tone will always be missed.
amen
❤
It sucks to be a 90s baby and fall in love with his vocals all to have this beautiful angel die because he was too far down. I know this is selfish, but it's not fair. Everytime I watch this I cry. You can hear his story in his voice.
Mike McfuckinCready, you're a genius.
He sang like on album... damn.
This song is Layne's Swan song. It is magical, beautiful and deeply melancholy. Why do you suppose he keeps repeating 'down oh down' and 'your/our pain is self chosen'? It's a cautionary tale of losing yourself, that he tells so we don't follow him down that same river.....bless him.
I just turned 60 and these are the greatest songs ever.
No auto tuner or hiding behind a studio...pure god given talent
i bet you comment on other videos like "no cellphones just everyone vibing in the moment"
@@phalxorI bet I can find your mom on my cellphone in less then 30 seconds on some certain entertainment sites.
Yep. I think Layne is even better live than on albums. He was such an incredible singer. So much talent.
Haunting. Sober since 2009 and still remember the pain.
Congrats Brother. Keep it and spread the word..
Sober since 2010 brother❤
time for netflix documentary about this band, its overdue
Or about Alice..
Why would Netflix have a documentary about mad season?
Matthew DuBay be positive. Man it would be nice.
@@sabraunstein true. even about layne's life would be great by itself. alice in chains, childhood and mad season. i dont have netflix but would gladly pay the monthly subscribion fee for it.

Vinyl Diary666 same. 100% same!
Same here ❣️
I always just want to give Layne a hug and tell him its all good.
I'm currently struggling with suicidal thoughts & I can't describe how much this song soothes my pain. I'm grateful that someone managed to put all the pain in words & sound. It's cathartic.
I wish you all the best, you'll pull through this.
@@waelesmair6250 Thank you. Music gives me incredible comfort.
How are feeling today Polly Violet?
@@jimday8426 Thank you for asking! Hopefully you're ready for a longish reply because oh boy, have I got a story for you.
Believe it or not, I completely forgot that I wrote this comment. Things have changed so much since then. Nine months ago I went through one of the darkest periods of my life, I was contemplating, as Stephen Fry nicely put it, a futureless future. Unemployed, mental health issues, living in a country that chases away its young people, and on top of that the relationship that was my only hope started to fall apart due to some real difficulties that became insurmountable.
I was grieving a life that never existed, a could have been life.
Now, are you ready for this? It gets really tense.
Somewhere around the time I realized that my relationship had no future I get a message from a person I haven't heard from in ages, but who I've known for a decade & who was at one point very close & dear to me. For some reason we lost touch, probably because we were both young & didn't really know what we wanted.
So we started talking again, he's always the one who initiates these conversations. Then he says, We should rent something together, meaning that I have to move from one city to another, leave my family & friends and move to a completely unfamiliar place. He was persistent, but not pushy. Eventually, I said yes. It's been almost three months since we've moved in together & I can honestly say that I often think to myself, I'm glad I didn't kill myself when I wanted to.
To anyone who is going through this: You are not alone & please stick around for a bit.
Wonderful news! I have a great life, family and friends, but occasionally my mind will go down a dark route. I have a wonderful support system and I'm pleased to hear that you do too. We will spread the good news that when you are feeling depressed, you are not alone. Thanks for the uplifting story!
This man needs to just be crowned king.....of everything...
Jesus Christ is King of kings. 👑 of everything!
Real kings don't need to get crowned.
Its never been brought up to my knowledge but i have to wonder if he took hisself out on purpose! He had done a shot already and was clutching a loaded syringe full ready to go again! He was in pain and i to have known that pain and wanted to finally go and be free from it all but im here and clean with almost 8 years under my belt
Layne is Stellar!!! but Mike McCreadys playing is FLAWLESS!!! Outstanding!!!
Thank you Layne. Your voice was amazing. I pray you, Demri and Sadie have found peace together forever. I have and will never stop listening to your voice and your music since day one in 1990. TY
My favorite frontman ever. Without the shades you can see how sad he is. Damn man
Hauntingly beautiful! RIP Layne thanks for the great tunes!
❤
Layne, come te nessuno mai ❤
Legend
The song I was waitin for
Layne looks so real here.
His voice is amazing too.
So beautiful to see him performing it live with his facial expressions so clear. The pain in his eyes is so heavy and beautiful
"Your pain is self chosen Don't let yourself get trapped in your own misery" Layne staley.
It's actually a quote from a book called the prophet

Well Said Bro🥰
If only they could find a way out of their pain and heal their hearts …………..
Lisa, more than anything I wish that Layne could have found a way out of the agony of his addiction and healed his heart. I only hope that he is at peace wherever he is now, he will always be much missed.

This song keeps getting sadder and sadder because layne is gone and we have to live knowing that
Where did all the years go 😮 RIP Lane 😎🎸✝️🙏
This man sings his heart out so beautifully
Every time I hear him live , I can't believe how good he is. His voice is amazing. He still surprises me.
It gives me chills, & to sing like that with a cig in hand LOL
Why have i never watched this live preformence of the song its by far the best one of this song and great sound quilty.
Thank you so freaking much for uploading these never seen videos of Mad Season. This is The greatest resurrection next to Jesus Christ for me...This generation needs to get to know Mad Season. This IS music at is finest.
It's above all other albums of the time... Pun intended
Agreed!
I can listen to Layne and Jerry harmonize every day n never tire of it... Last action hero was a shitty movie with a killer soundtrack with what the hell have I a lil bitter n fear the voices I think... Jerry wanted to keep going on with Alice in Chains and some of the songs on his solo shit I can hear Layne singing the parts... No excuses is awesome harmonizing..
This video and others are on the deluxe version of Above. The package has the 12 song version of Above, a CD of the Live at The Moore show, and a DVD of the Moore show with other video gems.
@@kevinwhiting8391 I particularly liked when they performed Brother in the unplugged when it comes to harmonizing. Really great musicians, I don't know what happened in Seattle around the 80' and 90' but it "pumped out" a lot of great musicians and I'm sure glad for it!
He is so talented, his voice is so amazing and it looks effortless for him. What a god given talent. Layne is sorely missed.
@John Wright We either turn to Jesus in this life to be saved or we die unrepentant and face eternal separation in outer darkness. There is no use in praying for Layne anymore.
Hebrews 9:27
[27]And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Layne is like the wind blows where it wants and you hear its sound but you dont know where it comes from or where it goes
Layne looked a little intense when he was sober. Despite all his work with AIC, I believe Mad Season is where Layne really expressed how he was feeling with tracks like this, above, I don't know anything, alone, etc. Thanks for all the good music. Best voice in all of rock!
This is what real music sounds like. Thank you for posting. Layne is a true legend. RIP you beautiful soul.
He looks so thin and sad...it hurts my heart...RIP Layne...you are still missed
He was not well
1994 was when his habits really spiraled out of control. Listen to his voice the year before and it sounds drastically different.
"Drugs worked for me for years." Layne in 1996. Take that any way you want.
@@jeffreytagliareni5291 dude that's how it goes for any human . They work for awhile then they dont then you need it to survive then it consumes you.
@@hellomynameisdoom8208 yeah like the whole dirt album talked about how great the were then transitioned to how shitty they were
I tend to cry every single time I listen to Layne sing it !! Fantastical Beautiful! ☮️💜
I cried most of the time as well. As this time
I’m always amazed at how great his voice was.
95 was right around the time I "got turned on to" grunge music. Kurt had passed, but I bought a shirt with his face on it. I was a sophomore. It kind of changed my friend group... from the "hicks" and cowboys and many years of mostly country music and popular radio. Grunge won my heart ❤
I still have a vintage shirt from Alice in Chains... probably from the Spencer's in our mall. It's the dark blue one with the noosed teddybear. It even survived a house fire in 2013 ❤
Rest in peace legend 🖤🖤🖤
Now I can grow a beautiful shell for all to see...😢
Saw this song performed live at the TOTD show in Seattle, only it was a different tragic figure singing the lead. This song is so dark and foreboding; and so beautiful...
Wow. So good. Born 67 and in my prime in the 90s. Miss those days but feel blessed to have experienced it. Had a blast !
I was born in '68, i thought the 70's were great, but i had a great time in the 90's too..
I was unfortunately born in '93 and don't feel at home in this era at all. It is eating me up inside. I wish I was born around your date of birth to have experienced that era full of great music, artists and meaning. These modern-tech days are bullshit.
Have u ever noticed? Almost all the grunge bands from Seattle.. they are all older generation Xer's. Born from 1964 to 68. Virtually all of them.
You can see the defeat and sadness in his eyes. Man I love layne. RIP
He looks and sounds great here compared to about a year later when AIC did the unplugged concert, both this concert and unplugged were epic!!! Miss you Layne you’ve helped me in life more then you’ll ever know!
Such a beautiful person, voice, and soul. I hope you found your peace Layne, RIP.
@John Wright yeah that will fix everything. Like the war in Russia. Covid. Aids. Cancer. Murder. Rape.
@John Wright his eternity is secured as long as people remember him and we have his music.
I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne!
Was going to ask if this was real live audio, until I heard the audience. Absolutely incredible performance. Beautiful video of Layne singing this song.
Most emotional and honest man that ever walk and sing the earth
He was beautiful, inside and out. He seemed happier before Demri died. One of a kind. RIP Layne
This song always brings a tear to my eye..for a multitude of reasons. RIP Layne.
seen him live 11 times now. Won't miss him if he's within 100 miles! Every show he's this soulful. He drips talent! His first cd is raw, but it's incredible for i think a 16 year old. He was 19 first time i seen him!!! watching his entire career so far, EPIC!!!
how beautiful.... ♥
I'm an addict that has been clean for 13 yrs as of January 13th 2022 and 2 of the reasons I haven't used is because of this song and Temple of the Dogs Times of Trouble !
Layne was a pure rock star. Almost the absolute perfect rock star.
how did he sing like an angel while smoking a cigarette on stage? I can hardly handle incense. he’s just a powerful amazing soul
Layne so powerful live ! One of a kind voice.
It's amazing how intimate and touching Mad Season's songs are for a group that would only produce one album. The guys in the grunge movement were pure magic
It blows my mind. I slept on this album for the longest and it’s like hearing Dark Side of the Moon for the first time.
Wow he’s so awesome no one like him love you Layne 💋💋💋💋
Best God given voice EVER....period.
He has a voice we will never hear again. Him, Eddie Vedder, Scott Weiland are 3 voices that will never be duplicated and imo Layne is the best of the 3.
Yes, his pain was self chosen. He was great singer singing a great song, and all in all great performance. For those of you who have never experience this dark side of life I will speak from experience. Layne was spun like a top and high as a kite while singing this song. RIP Layne Staley
He was high on coke here you can see how he moves his jaw back and forth I spotted it immediately
I love the instrumentation on this, it's all clean and it's simple and just wonderful. Layne of course, is perfection here, that dude was and still is legend.
He was beautiful, inside and out. One of a kind. RIP Layne
..last concert i saw. early 90s in knoxville tenn..hadnt been to a live show since. rip layne.

How can he sing so gently but still sound powerful?! Just how?!
I can't believe how lucky the audience was. Being able to see these amazing musicians live in their prime. I could only wish
One of the best song and band in history!!!
I heard Mad Season from lot of years ago and always back to this album. Layne and Mike the best combo ever👍🏻👌🏻
