Lyrics:
Wake up young man, it's time to wake up
Your love affair has got to go, for ten long years
For ten long years, the leaves to rake up
Slow suicide's no way to go, oh
Blue clouded gray, you're not a crack up
Dizzy and weakened by the haze
Movin' onward
So an infection not a phase, yeah-oh
The cracks and lines, from where you gave up
They make an easy man to read, oh-oh oh-oh
For all the times you let them bleed you
For a little peace from God you plead, and beg
For a little peace from God you plead
Oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-oh
Wake up young man
Wake up, wake up, wake up
Wake up, wake up, wake up
Oh-yeah

As much as we can talk about Mike as an awesome guitarist and writer, let’s not forget the great human being. This band was formed not only to help himself deal with his drinking problem, but also because he hoped that working with sober musicians would help to push Layne to get himself clean. That’s a fuckin good friend.
you're right...I forgot that
Mike is an incredible person. I have Crohn's Disease, like him, and I am so grateful for all of his advocacy work. It means so much.
Seriously? And I thought I look into my artist
Ty
U never can help anyone ...it's up to you no mother Fucker ...u have to want it internally...there is no way out...u gotta want it..but i.......
The leaves to rake up is a brilliant way to word depression
We were in our 20s listening to Layne tripping are balls off. Laynes voice was like a God or something. Now im 47 and I get the chills still when I hear him, no more tripping either. R.I.P. Layne
45....and miss the early 90's so stinking bad sometimes ❤
I was born In 96. Wish I was around for this era
I’m 46 yrs old and Layne got me thru my 20s 30s & still goin strong in my 40s
That’s awesome.
I get chills, tears, inner screams, laughs, all the amazing and positive feelings that we have as human beings from my Era. BTW, does anyone think this song is about his war with heroin?
You could tell he wasn’t happy about messing up the lyrics but brought the verse back he missed, awesome 👏🏻
I love when Layne belts out those "yeahah ahhh yeahhhhs" and that baseline is SICK.
Completely agree brother. Dude was sick as F!
It don't matter he messed up the lyrics his voice is spot on
Cannot listen to the song without tears in my eyes. Strange how I can miss someone I have never met. RIP Lane
I get the same with both layne and Chris
Takes me to a place you have never been
Takes me to a place I have never been is what I meant to say
I totally agree,I was listening to this song on my earphones walking along the highstreet balling my eyes out ..what a song
now mark lanegan of screaming trees is gone too :( he was a member of this band as well.
I was lucky enough to have been at this epic show.
My God, what was it like??
me too ❤️
Oh damn! You witnessed history in the making
I’m so grateful Mad Season exists
Upstairs on the balcony, looking down at the stage.
December 31st 1994.
A truly beautiful experience.
Miss you, Layne... :(
The best of all time..... Layne fuckin Staley
God damn he's so nodded.... " Love how he fucks up the lyrics. He should have said. "FUCK". Like he did in the unplugged.
Yep, no matter what, when, where I am, I'm listening.... always
1:50 I felt every millisecond of emotion Layne poured into those lyrics
WOW
fucking chills
"So an infection not a phase". Indeed, familiar to anyone struggling with addiction. We miss you Layne.
Nearly rips out my soul at 3:20 when he belts that out...... in tears this evening......
My thoughts exactly...
No one can give a live performance like layne did ..I repeat no-one..layne is a ultra fuckin’ legend in my book //
Absolute. Fucking. Legend. 100%%%%
Agreed
Hell yeah brother
I would give fingers to have been there.
I know that’s true because I’m a live music fanatic, used to love studio AIC back in the day, but once I started finding live stuff like this it literally changed my life. At 36. Guy was fucking incredible.
The reality of his fans: we will never see or hear him live again. We miss you Layne...I hope you woke up in the ever-after and found your peace and happiness.
I love this song
I want to wake up
Then wake up! Wake up! Wake up!
Well this is a well welcomed surprise to wake up to... literally!
Stfu
@@heinzkrupps5028 haha what
...addiction is hell.
...got real tired of my love affair with dope & the sickening cycle of sickness.
Got.real.tired.
*how i wished Layne could've beat his sickness.
I feel he had to make some type of peace with it...because it sure does wear.you.out.
God rest his beautiful soul 🌼
Miss Layne dearly R.I.P. buddy
Tears streaming and goosebumps.
For 30 long years…every time I hear it…goosebumps and lump in throat
1995 was the year I really started listening to Layne. I missed out on his life too much... we all did.
We all missed out and are still missing out on the life that wasn’t . Rip, Layne.
I never met this legend, but he knew all of US. He knew we’d need his music. This was his purpose and gift to the world. If the world didn’t know then, now they know💜 Mr. Layne Staley💜
In my world that's a Fuckin Masterpiece
When worlds overlap…👍
I'm 50 and so honored to have been listening in the late 80s and thru the 90s when the best and awesome voice landed in my ears! Pure talent and no other can come close. Hope your letting that voice sore to the amazement of the folks where you are like you have and always will here
I am now officially in heaven
Yep....Layne's an Angelic being.
Laynes masterpiece. I still get goosebumps after hearing this song thousands of times
Any video of this song live = THE GREATEST GUITAR SOLO EVER PERFORMED LIVE.
My God I miss these dudes!
His voice kills me over and over, so beautiful, so unique and so much in pain..
just the fact that he messed up a bit makes this all the more poignant. THANK YOU to whomever had the wherewithall to record this. Two people I wish I could just hug the daylights out of: Layne and Jerry, just to tell them "it's gonna be OK." And mean it.
There is so much talent here. Gah!! Wow, just wow. RIP Layne Staley. I hope this song spells out addiction to someone who needs to hear it.
I've had the monkey on my back for almost 20 years , I am in treatment now. I listen to Layne often , it helps get me through the day. RIP Layne Staley
@@waspworld9683 My husband is 20 years clean and sober. Gets better and better every day. Just do the steps. They work.
Wow. Besides Layne singing which of course we know there will be never be anotherLayne. What talent the guitarist Mike mccready and the drummer and bass player are probably the most talented musician I've listened to.. the whole band just reaches inside your soul
The anger, and pain in his voice. Wow just wow. 5:26
Mike McCready is such a badass!
You goooo Mike McCready 🎸 WOW!!! Love and Miss you Layne Staley 😇❤️🤘 one of my favorite songs from Mad Season!!
BARRET!!!!!! I Love them all but dam he hits them well!!!!
The best from the whole scene….
Should have joined PJ when jack left!
Just realized how similar John Frusciante and McCready are in their solo styling and playing. That's pretty awesome.
Si , pero Red hot chili peppers hace musica mas festiva .
both heavily influenced by hendrix
I know it’s almost like they both listened to a lot of Hendrix when they were growing up in the 80s or something. Even got marshal amps and fender strats and a rotovibe and wah and fuzz. I know That’s pretty amazing because I Cut my teeth the same way.. It’s was a thing of beauty. Still is .
McCready's guitar work carried this band, I mean its fucking awesome. Layne is awesome too but he gets the credit he deserves and McCready doesn't always
@@pmx6689 Mad Season isn't competing with Frusciano or anyone else for that matter. They are making music on their terms, for the enjoyment of all, unapologetically.
Whoooo that man just sings to my soul. Miss you so much layne. Hope ur flying feeling no pain now. ❤
Heartbreaking and powerful song 💔🤘🔥
RIP Layne, you are in our hearts forever 💙🌈😇🌈💙
No matter if he forgot the words he still did great.
He reversed the two verses in this song, more then likely fucked up God love him. What an amazing vocalist, one of if not the best of all time.🖤🤘🖤🤘
Think words were not fully completed..layne would just basically free style with the music until words finalized.
All I can say is fuck yeah! What a song! The vocals and ensemble are so on point!
Holy shit that was powerful. Thanks for this. Cracking, sick, strained voice and all shows the real life drug addict struggle. Poor Guy. R.I.P LTS and MS. Would've been on top of the world if he was still around. Damn. Im awake now.
Aaron Shensky hell ya bro.. " rich and growing sicker.". Layne is a legend
If he only could have listened to his own advice. Miss this guy immensely
@@chadcassidy1580 Heroin addicts know that there is a chance of dying from their addiction but use inspite of that risk.
I know I'll probably die from using.
Just cos you're aware of your addiction & what it can do to you doesn't make it any easier to give it up!
@Aryan Mia92 I hope you find the love that you need and stop using it. Have a very wonderful day and don't forget, you'll always have beautiful music to listen to.
Holy shit.. exactly. I'm speechless.
Barret was really killing it that night, wow!
They all were really, but the drumming stood out to me first.
Lots of space to operate. More so than in Screaming Trees. All the Seattle band drummers are masterful and unique
I love the drummer Barret, he was awesome in Screaming Tress also!! 🥁 I absolutely love Mad Season 💓🤘 love Mike McCready 🎸 and bass John Baker Saunders 🎸 and love love Layne Staley 🎤 RIP Layne and John Baker Saunders 😇😇🌹🌹
never in my life have i heard a drummer stand out as much as barrett..even more than peart..for some reason his percussion really nails you in the heart, where other drummers are almost a glorified metronome..love barrett

Wish I could go back in time and give him a big hug! Miss ya Layne!
I wish I could just hug you all... but I’m not gona.

I watched this video as I was starting to come down from a very, very intense shroom trip about a week ago, this song is incredible
Mike is fukn amazing....miss you Layne....great song to wake up to....
After watching these Mad Season tracks live, and finally, it's breaking my heart massive to hear Layne like this. He is my favourite musician and I never knew his body couldn't control his golden vocals no more 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
that guitar solo was sickkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
3rd row at the Moore, at 58 this song still rattles my soul. RIP Layne. Thanks for posting.............
Moore show version was better imo. You being there to see it.....no words🎸
Wow the Moore show is probably one of the best shows ever taped. You are a lucky soul.
Wow!! You lucky duck, that had to be the best live show ever!
Great solo
Anybody else thinks we are haunted to find this the most emotional music ever
So much haunting music between AIC and MS
Yes! It is a very emotional song! It stabs you right in the soul. R.I.P. Layne Staley!
Mad Season is where Layne's is a fish in the water.
It brings me to tears every time I see or hear this man-knowing how the story ends in this man's song-he goes on only to "Wake Up" dead!
He was so goddamn beautiful, unequivocally unique, and incredibly talented!
I have personally felt the unimaginable pain and the seemingly unending despair from herøin addiction-the soul-crushing, helatious, horrific heartbreak that only Layne Staley's voice so accurately translates!
💔 RIP 😭

I was born in Adana/Turkiye. So it's Middle East. I met with Mad Season 4 - 5 years ago. I am proud of myself Because i found you, guys. I wish i found long time ago. Maybe i could contact with Layne. It would give a hope or hapiness to him, maybe... I found him even in this geography. I can share/feel his pain, EVEN HERE, in god damn Turkey.
Damn... I'm missing you EVEN HERE. July 17th ''19. Wake Up!
My bday is July 16th. Yeah, he will be #1 on my list. I listen to my buddy Ryan Upchurch, my music, all fuckin', every fuckin' day.

Holy shit mike, that was the best solo I have heard him do for this song
So thankful for Layne, that incomparable voice and music .. literally kept me alive back then ... I could never repay him in a million years .. RIP brother
Layne's voice is keeping me alive now.
This has had such a huge impact on my life. And, after all those years, I feel blessed for having received such a beautiful gift.
What a cohesive unit. Criminally underrated
I'm older now but everytime I hear him sing It brings me back to some fantastic music, thank you Layne!! God rest your soul!!💛⚘✌
What a great song
Even better live, don't know how that's even possible
In my opinion Mad Season and AIC are a lot better than Nirvana.
Layne had one of the best voices in the world and the musicians are so awesome. It doesn't get any better!
It's a shame that I couldn't experience the wonderful concerts live. I miss Layne so much, but luckily we have great memories of him through the wonderful music.Thank you Mad Season und AIC!
R.I.P.Layne!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I agree. But we have to remember Kurt died before he had a chance to show us his full potential. Who really knows how he would have grown. Nirvana's Unplugged was a glimpse that he was more talented than other albums. Make no mistake I Love Layne with AIC and MS.❤
In my humble opinion, AIC w/ Layne left such a deep impact on so many even after decades since deep down they were one of the most genuine, kind, humble yet tortured souls. What I love most about Layne & Jerry is how they are never afraid to be brutally honest in their lyrics to express their emotions. They never tried to please anyone . . .if you like it, great! If you don't like it, get lost! Layne & Jerry were very close . . . I remember Jerry said in one of his interviews years after Layne passed that he would occasionally go visit Layne's house knowing that he wouldn't open his door since he was so ill during their hiatus (1996-2002), just to bang on his front door and let Layne know that he was here and still cared about him . . . letting him know that he is never alone in his darkest hours. Also, when Jerry was homeless after his grandma and mom's passing, Layne offered Jerry to stay with him if he had no where to stay when they barely just met! On the other hand, I felt that Kurt & Courtney and their overall 'drama' just ruined my impression of Kurt!
Missing someone I have never met tonight💔 Layne Staley.
Definitely in the top 10 for Epic-ness. Crazy and brilliant...
Still the best
My dad showed me this song years ago in my mid teens and it is absolutely one of my favorites. I think this song now means as to me as it does him. Genuinely one of the most beautiful creations I have come to know so far.
The best, ever
Barrett Martin is a beast.
Soothing angst but riding the heights of subtle emotion….I almost died a little hearing this. Fantastic rhythm 🕷❤️
I shared this with a friend I love dearly who has succumbed to addiction which has me very worried. I can only hope he listens to the words and realizes just how much I love him and maybe actually wakes him up.
Location not in video description. Answer: RKCNDY - Used to be one of Seattle's liveliest clubs, but it was closed in October, 1999.

This is a powerful, raw version of wake up. You can hear the damage that has been done. Still fantastic!
Fuck you punk. You try being in the spotlight when you already live in one, where people see your every mistake, know your every decision, and follow your every move. As a matter of fact, let me tell you something. I think that you don’t know shit about SHIT to do with shit. I know you feel me. You’re one of the people who say you love layne, but really you just love running your mouth about shit you will never be able to relate to. Mike on guitar, what a boss!!!!
Yes!!!!!!!
Mike mccready was fucking hammering that guitar what magic plus Layne Staley's voice this is what music should still be like miss the good old days fuck......🤙
The warm embrace of sadness,
this is how u make the guitar cry
What a beautiful Man ❤️ and a beautiful Voice I ❤️ U Layne 🙏
What a kickass way to start a new year i wish i was there 🥺
Mike is such a great guitarist. Never thought he was a good fit in Pearl Jam. I think this proves that notion.
I was just thinking this exact same thing
Glad someone else feels this way. Not only a great guitarist but a great song-writer. Mike has taken a back seat in PJ which is sad. I listen to 'Slip Away' and can't comprehend the magic of not only writing that song, but the sadness and emotions of playing that guitar solo.
@@erichandbury5803 Agreed about Mike and Mad Season! This was a band where Mike belonged. PJ is lucky he stuck around.
Exactly, the fact that he came up with those genius melodies for Mad Season proves the guy can hold his own. He deserves to be in a band that gives him more creative freedom, Pearl Jam is not it.
wow this is rad and rare
So damn awesome on so many levels.
this must be when he first started singing it and hadn't wrote all the words yet. I noticed a little different but it sounds intentional!! Sounds beautiful ,and I love his hair slicked back like this!!
perfectingodseyes masters no, the words were still the same but he kept forgetting them:(
Layne is still awesome even in mess ups! Legend 🙌

RIP Legend.
He was still writing the lyrics to these new songs, no forgetting at all, the album was recorded after the live shows...
