I heard a loud gasping sound when he pulled out the ring. Then I realized later when I rewatched this that there was no gasp and that was the audience’s jaws dropping.
The significance of the ring is because it is his mothers ring. It meant she gave her approval finally. Even Nick's mom was not proposed with his grandmother's ring because she did not like her. But the ring meant - the mother now is sorry and now wants you to be with her son.. Thats why ppl gasped, not because its a huge ring
The 2 proposal scene of this movie shows a different side of common woman who's after wealth which ruins the movie. First proposal was a small ring and the guy said he will leave everything behind and start a new life in New York and the girls says NO which she should have said YES and later on proved to his mother she's worth it rather than saying YES to the 2nd proposal with a much bigger ring which is from his mother which means she's sorry, with acceptance and blessing and huge wealth which makes her looks like a gold digger.
I might sound like I might be speaking from atop a high horse, but I thought she ruined the moment. It was Rachel's place to say anything at all in that moment. She had no right nor any clue if she wanted to say yes to him. It sounded more like she wanted to say yes to him.
The emerald ring was like a character on its own, it had such significance. Like some other scenes in this film, like the famous MaJong game that was not in the book, no words were needed to get across a huge point to those who are paying attention. Nick’s mother had changed her mind and now wants the marriage. That stone had been given to her as an engagement ring in love and in defiance of the family’s demands that her husband marry someone else they deemed suitable. Now she sees history being repeated and supports it. The jewelry in the movie was real, rented and heavily insured during filming. But that stunning emerald ring is the personal property of Michele Yeoh, who loaned it for the production because she insisted that it had to be right.
This is the only ring with such significant meaning where the mother in law gave understanding and blessed the union without saying a single word. Engagements aren't rare, that reversal in multi-generational ruling is. So beautiful how Rachel even took a step back in her desires to even give space for that to happen or not happen. She (and the MIL) is beyond special indeed.
This part of the movie always brings me to tears. It's very similar to my love story but, my Nick Young was tragically killed in a car accident three years ago. Life!! A mother's love for her son superseded her feelings towards Rachel. His happiness meant more to her. I think the Mahjong meeting changed her mind too. When she told Elenor that she didn't want Nick to lose his mother again really shook her up. You could see the short circuiting on her face immediately after she said it....This was a much happier ending than mine! If only I wasn't so old fashion, I would have married him like he wanted......Things would have been very different.
It's really painful watching this now given how clearly relieved Wu is from being away from Fresh Off The Boat and Wu thinking this was a step to bigger things.
She is a high paying job of being an economic professor at NYC.A part of upper middle class. She just doesn't have as much money as Nick Young's family.
The ring is Eleanor's. It's her sign of approval of the marriage - that was why Rachel knew she could say yes and it wouldn't sabotage Nick's life/family relationships somehow.
quite right. That was Nick's mom's ring. And that was the TOP reason Rachel said "yes" this time. SPIOLER ALERT: in the previous scene before this Rachel agreed to meet Nick one last time to say goodbye and Nick choose that moment to propose (with a ring he brought himself). Rachel said "no". But seeing Auntie Eleanor's ring Rachel realized Nick's mom had given her approval so Rachel's answer this time was "YES"
Also important, earlier in the movie Auntie Elenore reveals that Nick's father had to have that engagement ring made for her, because Nick's grandmother didn't approve of HER or provide her ring to Nick's father.
@@vincentmarotta9800 Not everybody who saw the movie thought he was "a genuinely good person". Some people think good looks, reasonable intelligence and vast wealth are not the only requirements. Your lack of understanding does not make them "jealous".

??? Yk it’s important the mom give her ring right? It means she approves of them and Nick wouldn’t have to chose between his family or Rachel.
