  • The above video is an excerpt from our Reaper course -
    www.homebrewau... - Intro to MIDI and using virtual instruments in Reaper audio recording software. This is actually part 1 of a 3-part lesson from the new home recording course The Newbies Guide To Audio Recording Awesomeness 2: Pro Recording With Reaper by Home Brew Audio. This video shows you how to create a MIDI track, insert a MIDI item, load up a virtual instrument - the free virtual synthesizer called "ReaSynth" that comes with Reaper - and enter MIDI notes for the synthesizer to play. You'll use Reaper's MIDI Editor window to do that using just your mouse. Then you'll see how to swap the instrument - this time using a free VST instrument (VSTi) called 4Front Piano - to see how the same MIDI file can be played on different instruments.

    This must be the 5th video I've watched trying to get reaper working.
    It worked.
    Too many of the other "tutorials" don't start with the initial basic setup,
    they assume everyone already has a functioning install.

    The part about how MIDI is not an audio file is very important. Some people have had trouble understanding this for some reason and I just cannot understand why. The discogs forum, in particular, is where I've seen this misunderstanding like crazy. I can post some example links if you really want to see what I mean; there are a few examples I've come across. It's funny, because I thought the difference between MIDI and audio was pretty well established a long, long time ago... but apparently it just doesn't click with some people :/!
    OK, rant over :))))))))))

    Thanks, that really helped. I'm just dipping my toe into DAWs and creating music. I just got ODESI and made a simple 4 measures of a track, exported the .MID file and imported it into Reaper (4.76).
    I have bought a tutorial from AskVideo on Reaper, but it was total rubbish and assumed loads of stuff, while neglecting the basics.
    So, my new 'creation' sat there - I didn't even know if I'd set the sound up correctly (the tutorial is that bad), but your video showed me exactly what I needed to know!

    One of the most common (if not THE most common) problems in Reaper is forgetting to turn "Record Monitoring" on. It's off by default. When you're recording a MIDI instrument though, you need to have it on. It's the button in the bottom right corner of the track control panel. If that does not work, you should try the next most common problem, which is that Reaper is not recognizing your MIDI keyboard (are you using one? - this wouldn't be an issue if you use Reaper's virtual keyboard).

    +Andrew Grube - Go to Preferences, Plug-Ins, VST. Then in the top of that window, make sure you enter the folder where your .dll is. Then "Re-scan." That should do it.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  10 лет назад

      Andrew Grube Sorry Andrew. I don't know another way to fix this accept to double-check that the .dll file is in the folder, and that you have added that directory path to Reaper's list of folders to check. If hitting "Rescan" doesn't work, try restarting Reaper? Failing that, you might want to ask on the Reaper forum (reaper.fm). Sorry I couldn't be more help.

    To make sure Reaper can see your MIDI device, go to Options/Preferences/Audio/MIDI Devices. Under MIDI inputs, make sure you can see your device listed (if you can't you may not have hooked it up to your computer correctly, or it may not be on). Then under "Mode" by your device, make sure it says "Enabled." If it doesn't, right-click where it says "disabled" and select "Enable input" down menu. Then try everything again. Good luck!

    You know, I just answered your question based on part 3 of this lesson instead of part 1, which is what the above You Tube video actually is;). Sorry about that. Your problem may be much simpler since this vid doesn't use a MIDI device, just drawn MIDI notes. So try this instead. Open a new track and insert ANY audio file (mp3, wav, etc.) and try to play it. Can you hear that? If not, then Reaper isn't sending sound to your computer's sound card. Do you only have one sound card?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  10 лет назад

      Not really. A good place to ask would be on the Reaper Forum on the site at reaper.fm. I have a number of percussion/drum plugins, but they are all paid virtual instruments. My favorite strings are part of Omnisphere. And my go-to percussion and drum program is still an old virtual instrument called StormDrum. But there are lots and lots of both available out there. the folks on the forum will have some good ideas for you.

    Hey,
    I got a question. I want to sample drums with midi. I have for each part of the drum set an own file, like “crash” or “kickdrum” but I can’t find a way to give each key in the midi its own sound. I can make each note in midi sound the same. I don’t just want to change the pitch of each sound, but give every note a unique sound. I need this because I can’t afford buying a drum sample program. Thanks for an answer.

    Really usefull video ! But I can't download the 4 Front Piano, is that normal ? When I get back on Reaper to add it (Preferences-VST), it doesn't appear on the list. What can I do ?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  9 лет назад

      Pitou B You mention 2 different issues here. If you couldn't download the 4Front Piano, then reaper wouldn't be able to load it. If you were able to get the 4Front piano from the internet (free), you need to make sure you remember where you put the .dll file (what folder on your computer), then you need to tell Reaper to scan that folder for plugins. If you didn't do that last part, go to Options/Preferences/Plugins/VST. Then enter the the folder where you put the dll and either "rescan," or restart Reaper (which will rescan automatically upon opening). Hope that helps!

      Ok ! Thank you for your explanations ! I downloaded the ZIP file but I think it is not complete because Reaper can't recognize the file on my computer. Do you have any other links (for the Piano sound) that I could use for Reaper ?
      If you don't mind, I have another question about Reaper : I wanted to record something but I haven't any mic, so the sound recorded is simply horrible. I heard that to get a good sound, you need a good sound card and a good mic, but it's pretty expensive. Is that true ? What advice would you give to have a better sound on Reaper or Audacity ?
      Thank you so much (Sorry for all the mistakes that I've probably made, English is not my mother tongue) !

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  9 лет назад

      If you unzip the file, you will find a file called 4Front Piano.dll. Copy that file into any folder on your computer. Then follow the directions in my 1st reply (and in the video) so Reaper knows where to find it. About the mic - of course you need one, but it does NOT have to be expensive. Try to get a USB mic and see if that helps. You can get a Samson q1u (amzn.to/1RUkmTt ) for $49.99. Try not to get a headset kind. But if that's all you can afford, then by all means, try that. Hope that helps.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording

      Jiří - You should just be able to run the MIDI output from either Guitar Pro or Reaper into the MIDI input of the JP-08. Then since the JP-08 also actus as a USB interface, you should be able to Record the resulting JP-08 sound into Reaper. You'll need to select the JP-08 as your audio device input in Preferences first. But that should work. Hope that helps.

    I want to use the Arturia Minilab in Reaper, any advice on where I can go to learn how to set this up?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  10 лет назад +1

      Hi Ryan. Sure. I can tell you:). First, Plug the Arturia into a USB port on your computer. Make sure your computer recognizes it. I'm not sure if it comes with drivers you have to install, but if it does, you'll have to do that like you would with any USB device.. Then in Reaper, go to Options (menu at the top), Preferences. That brings up the Preferences menu. Then under "Audio," go to MIDI Devices. You should see the Arturia there. Enable it there. Then click OK and exit the menu. Now it's set up. Now on a track in Reaper, click on the Input window (right under the volume slider). It's a drop-down menu. Click on Input: MIDI. You should see the Arturia there. Select it. Now there are only 2 more things to do. First, arm track to record. And 2nd, turn Record Monitoring on. The Record Monitoring control is right underneath the FX button on the track's control panel (has a little triangular arrow). click it until the arrow turns green and it says Record "Monitoring: On." Now just load up a virtual instrument as in the above video, and you should be all set. Hit the keys on the Arturia and you should be playing whatever instrument you loaded up. Hope that helps!

Now however, I need to be able to use the presets that come with the Arturia Minilab program. I'm not sure if you are familiar with the Minilab, but would you have any lead on how to use those presets as needed in Reaper?

      ***** You're welcome, Ryan! Glad it helped:). I do not have the Arturia, so I don't have 1st-hand knowledge on how to use the presets you mention. But have you been here? - www.arturia.com/products/hybrid-synths/minilab/overview It looks like (just guessing here) you load up the Arturia by going to FX on a Reaper track and selecting Arturia as your VST instrument. That should allow you to view the Arturia software whenever you click the FX button on that track in Reaper. Once into the Arturia software, you should be able to select the different instruments via the presets. But that is just a guess. It's how I use Storm Drum and Omnisphere in Reaper, so I assumed it would be the same. Hope that helps.

    I am worried about MIDI instrument latency using a 81-key midi controller. I need to be able to hear what im playing with Zero latency. What kind of coputer (or other hardware) do I need to be able to do this on Windows? Also are the best sites to find free VSTi, I want thousands of them.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  10 лет назад

      Hi Vince. You'll probably want an audio interface with an ASIO driver (most interface units these days use ASIO), such as the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. If your keyboard does not already have a way to connect via MIDI to your computer (a USB MIDI cable, etc.), then you might look into the Scarlett 2i4, which has MIDI in/out capability. Once you have that, you're latency will be mainly dependent on the power of your computer. RAM and CPU power come into play once you start placing a large demand on them with large, resource intensive plugins/VSTis. So the bottom line is: Use a low-latency audio interface with ASIO drivers and a computer with as much RAM and CPU processing power as you can get. As for free VSTis, there are a lot of them out there. Just putting "free vsti" into Google will yield several results. Personally, I use 4FrontPiano a lot, which is free. But if you are going to be serious about MIDI recording, you'll want to invest in better instruments than just the free ones. Hope that helps.

      Thanks for the reply! :) I subcribed for sure.
      I guess my 2nd question is what kinds of coputer componets arent powerful enough and what would be overkill? Like I assume a dualcore processor with 2gbs of ram wont cut it. But is an i5 processor with 8gbs of ram overkill?
      Also I plan on using the MIDI Out ports on the keyboard to the interface's MIDI In ports, but how can I tell if the interface has ASIO drivers? Is it just in the specs? Some MIDI keyboards just have usb out. Does this just go directly to your computer, or should I still use an interface?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  10 лет назад

      Vince Brown Thanks:). To answer the 1st question, I hate to say it but ..."it depends:)." For example I have 8GBs of RAM in a Windows 7 machine. It's sufficient for running several virtual instruments at the same time. I thing you're right about 2GBs not being enough though. At least if you plan to run more than a couple of VIs at once. But I also think that 8GBs will NOT be overkill. In fact, it still might not be enough if you want to run a lot of resource-intensive plugins, but it's a good place to start. If you use Windows 7, Home Premiere can recognize up to 16GB. As for the ASIO driver, you can check that before buying the interface. But it isn't exaggerating to say that any new interface you can buy in 2014 that can be used with Windows (ASIO not an issue with Mac on OSX) will use an ASIO driver. And lastly, if a keyboard has a USB MIDI hookup, just plug it into your computer directly. Did that answer everything?

    Do you know of any other free VST's I could use that are just .dll instead of actual applications. I bought my computer and it already had an admin password on it. No one knows it and we can't take it off without wiping the computer. So with applications I need an admin password that no one knows. With the 4Front piano, it is an application so it doesn't need an admin password to run.
    Summary: Don't got no admin password. Need .dll not application, know any good ones? (That preferably aren't viruses)

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 лет назад

      OK, try this. Open a track. Then from the "Insert" dropdown menu, choose Media File (not "new MIDI item"). Then locate your MIDI file and select that. Once you have the MIDI file loaded, then you just need to attach a virtual instrument to the track and the MIDI file will play it:). Hope that helps.

    • @MEXpartan

      Thanks, but I just figured out. For some reason I had no receivers, so I just choose "add receives from all tracks" and all my VST started to sound.

      I think it isn't working as I suppoused. Now when I play, I can hear the vst I assigned for the MIDI, but it is playing the notes that are into another midi item. It has something to do with receivers and sends. Do you know something about this?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 лет назад

      Aha. So your midi file has multiple parts? Like different voices or instrument parts? If so, when you imported it into Reaper, were you given the choice to expand the MIDI onto multiple tracks? That's usually how it works for me. If so, you should simply need to put the appropriate VSTi (virtual instrument) on each track. I know there are folks who do much more complex things with MIDI in Reaper, and most of them hang out on the Reaper forum at reaper.fm. They have one of the most active and helpful forums around. If what I have suggested doesn't help, your next visit should be there for sure. That's where I would go to get the question answered anyway:).

    I've been trying to record my own acoustic drum set, turn the parts into samples and turn that into a MIDI file so I can effectively play my own drum set from my computer. Any suggestions how to go about that?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 лет назад

      Yes. There is a lesson in the course about it:). But essentially you'd need to record single hits of each sample first, of course. Then use ReaDrums in Reaper. If you do a search for ReaDrums Reaper, you should find more information. It is a track and project template that allows you to load up your samples and play them using MIDI. Hope that helps.

    can you do strings sounds on this?

    • @KenTheriot
      @KenTheriot 9 лет назад

      +musicguy 101 You can do any sound if you have a virtual instrument plugin (VSTi, DXi for Windows and AUi for OS X). The synth that comes bundled - ReaSynth - is pretty basic and will only yield pretty electronic, computery type sounds. But there are hundreds (if not thousands) of 3rd party virtual instrument plugins for every instrument imaginable. I use strings fairly often in arrangements. the ones I use most often these days is part of Omnisphere (a large and pretty pricey soft-synth/sampler). But you can get strings from a lot of different sources. Does that answer your question?

      Try Sound On Sound, Sounds Online, KVR Audio, and dskmusic. Some instruments are only available on DVDs, but you can get VST downloads as well. You might want to get the Kontakt Player from Native Instruments (free). Lots of virtual instruments are made to be playable by Kontakt. Hope that helps.

    if i where to use this for say, a guitar using an audio interface with a vst for it, can you play it live and hear it?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 лет назад +1

      So if you're trying to create a guitar sound using a virtual instrument (a virtual guitar), then yes. You would hook up a MIDI keyboard to your computer, load up the virtual guitar instrument VST, and you're off to the races.

    • @thomasfowler2140

      what about an audio interface, like this one:
      www.amazon.com/Behringer-UMC22-BEHRINGER-U-PHORIA/dp/B00FFIGZF6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1507583029&sr=8-3&keywords=Behringer+U-Phoria+UM2
      because i'm thinking this, or buying an el cheapo pedal and plugging it in to my tascam dp 03sd. truth be told, this method is more expensive because i'd have to buy another cord, plus a power adapter.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 лет назад +1

      Thomas - what you're talking about won't really take advantage of MIDI, per se. It sounds like you already have a guitar that plan to feed into Reaper. That interface should work fine for that. What you will want is a virtual guitar amp. Good news on that front! Reaper has a built-in (stock) plugin you can use for that (JS, not VST though). So first, add the FX (effect) of JS: Convolution Amp Modeler. Then enable that track to record and just play your guitar part directly through your USB interface (choose "Instrument" plugin). To hear it "live" as you play, be sure to click Record Monitoring On (it's off by default). Does that answer your question?

    hi hi, may i ask,
    when i import a midi song into Reaper, before i can click PLAY button, do i need to manually link 1 VST to EACH Track, in order for me to hear the sound & music? ( unlike cakewalk or STUDIO 1, which AUTOMATICALLY allow me to hear every track immediately once i click playback)
    many thanks

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 лет назад

      Hi. I'm not familiar with those other products, but the short answer is yes. A track cannot play instrument sounds unless you tell it what instrument to play. I'm kind of curious how Cakewalk or STUDIO1 work that out. Maybe they have some sor tof automation where a piano or something gets loaded whenever a MIDI track is loaded. Hmm, now you've got me thinking - I'll bet you could set Reaper to do that. Of course the problem there might be if a drum MIDI is loaded, it would sound VERY strange hearing a piano play that.

    • @ewokmoses5909
      @ewokmoses5909 7 лет назад

      ahahah, actually, by default,
      whenever i import a midi song into cakewalk, for eg, and when i click PLAYBACK, i can hear the whole song as it was played,,,ie, drums, piano, strings, bass guitar, etc,.,,but in reaper, apparently it cant!! i gotta manually link 1 vst instrument to each track!! this is utterly frustrating n time wasting

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 лет назад

      OK, it looks like Studio ONE and probably Cakewalk are loading MIDI files that contain GM (general MIDI) info (basic instruments like you mention). In most cases (in my experience, anyway) those sounds are OK for playback. But their quality is usually not what you'd be looking for if you wanted to produce high quality music for a CD project or something. Looking for how to do that in Reaper. I know you CAN. But it might require grabbing a couple of 3rd party plugins. do you use a Mac or Windows?

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  7 лет назад

      OK, here is how you can do this on a Mac in Reaper. Load two plugins. First, ReaControl MIDI (from the Cockos plugin folder) and load DLSMusicDevice (from the Instruments folder). Then in ReaControl MIDI, under "Bank," load the "GM.rebank." No if you put the MIDI file into that track without expanding across multiple tracks, it will play all the instruments. Not sure how to do it in Windows yet.

    How do you control the length of the midi item you insert? Creating a new midi item for each measure seems very tedious.

    • @HomebrewAudioRecording
      @HomebrewAudioRecording  8 лет назад +3

      Oh yeah. that was just for demo purposes. If you highlight the amount of space (duration)you want the MIDI Item to fill in the project, and then Insert New MIDI Item, you'll get a MIDI Item the length of the highlighted area. Hope that helps.
