For anyone trying to use prerecorded audio with this method, you need to right-click the speaker icon (Record Monitoring button) and select "Monitor Track Media When Recording" and then record. Or right click media item and select "Apply track/take FX to items as new take (MIDI output)" instead of record for a faster result if working with a long item.
I have tried both ways that @vauteau5140 shows and it does lay out a midi item but it is empty, no notes to be seen. And in Kenny´s method only the 2 bottom strings of my bass show up, the A and E strings don´t record. Any ideas?
@@loretoz I take the bass up two octaves to improve on tracking. @DLCoker666 I'm having the same issue. The track won't export as a MIDI take, even though I can hear Kontakt output the signal. I'm trying to send the MIDI to a new track as a workaround, and that's not working, either.
It's crazy how useful these tutorials are. I recorded a bass track for a song and wanted to use a completely different sound for it. I converted it to midi, used a bass plugin, and it worked perfectly. Thanks for that tutorial.
That's exactly what I want to do (I don't have a bass guitar. . only regular guitar). I hope I can find a bass midi sound that can interpret string bends info properly. . because I want a smooth bend. . not jumping from note to note.
This is really great for something that is already included. I had a bit of latency between the guitar being played and the synth being triggered. I am not sure if this is the best solution, but when I turned off the 'automatic pitch correction' in ReaTune's 2nd tab, I have almost no latency now. Just in case, I ran my signal in mono as well and bypassed my other gear I normally have inline for recording. Granted, its picking up every single note and its tough to not bend and play 100% monophonic, but this will really be useful. Thanks Kenny.
Your inline gear probably isn't the problem, any latency would be due to your CPU speed. Having a faster computer would probably be the only way to improve the latency.
I have the same problem. about 500 msec latency to be more precise. Apparently the buffering mode in the "tuner" tab of ReaTune is set to "non live input", but I cannot find this "non live input" tab anywhere.
the video is excellent! did anyone find out more about this topic "picking up every single note and its tough to not bend and play 100% monophonic"? I am still having a latency that is probably because of CPU (however in my notebook are 12 of them - so it´s probably not about CPU in my case) AND it´s super tough to exactly play 100% monophonic on a six string... how are you managing this?
Simplesmente maravilhoso!
I feel like Reaper needs an audio to midi conversion option command. Ideally with several algorithms…this is the type of stuff that really makes PT stand out in modern age
Mr. Kenny Gioia Sir, You Are Certainly The Foremost & such a Dynamic Teacher For Reaper, Its Incredible Man! ThankYou For This Video, Wow! To be able to do this with just a Regular Guitar and Not even to have Purchase an Expensive MIDI Guitar such as a Godin and then also to have to have with that a Roland GR55 etc etc etc in order to do all these things, But this Awesome, ThankYou Sir once again And The Lord Jesus Bless You Man!
first, thanks for this. I followed the example and it worked great. I used an E tuning fork. This function alone might justify the purchase of Reaper. I'm working with Reaper as a possible replacement for Reason.
Is it possible to do the reverse of what you did? I already have MIDI notes. Now I want them to sound using a one-shot bass sample sound (2-3 seconds) that I have.
@@ugopalazzooddo8405 Exit the program a set it up again, it needs several attempts sometimes, also try deleting track and creating a new one and setting it up again you will get it working of sorts! Holy Shit, If you ran for President now I would vote for you dude, awesome dude, I was looking for a plugin to do this and it is in Reaper all along. Seriously, you need to run next election.
Many thanks. So, if I wanted to convert an already recorded audio loop (.WAV) to MIDI, would I have the .WAV loop on one track, and set up another track to record the output of that track to MIDI (in the way you do it here)?
Can you use a mic'ed kazoo for input instead of a guitar? Asking so I don't waste time if this is not a thing to attempt. Having a kazoo produce recorder or flute sounds for instrumental passages when I am performing with my ukulele would be really cool. Thank you.
I just find out this video and tried to trigger virtual bass with my guitar. It seems to work just like Kenny shows, but as I have slow computer, there is a lot of latency. I tried to solve this problem by switching monitoring off, but now there is no signal going to track. Should it work like that?
I couldn't get this to work properly with a bass guitar. I have small arthritic hands so I'm a poor bass player but I need to write them for my songs. I just bought PunkBass from Submission Audio and was looking for a way to convert the basslines I played to MIDI so I could fix my poor playing and have PunkBass take care of it. I followed Kenny's instructions but when I hit record the MIDI recording was all over the place. It picked up some high notes but none of the low ones and even the higher ones it picked up were a total mess.
For bass, I would set the Window Size (on the opening tuning screen) to 200ms. That should catch all of the lower notes. Also, apply a bandpass filter (I usually set it at between 600 to 3000 hz) before anything else in your chain. This will filter out a lot of the 'garbage' frequencies and overtones.
I did the steps in this video and it did send my guitar audio into the virtual instrument vst, but I am getting huge latency between the guitar audio to the midi. I have no latency when playing and having the audio come through, but when it sends it to midi, the sound coming out is delayed a lot. Any ideas on what is causing this or how I can avoid it?

6 years of using Reaper EVERY day and didn’t know you could do this. Thanks for the video!
Happy to help!
My jaw just hit the floor. I had no idea you could do this.
pick your dusted jaw and go use this feature :D
Kenny is the best.
In one second I was able to send a complicated guitar riff track to a synth vst for doubling and it was perfect. You're a God
You're an absolute hero Kenny. I've been using reaper for about 5 years and didn't know you could do this. Game changer!
I just used this method for my mic. I wanted to sing/hum my melodies and it works!!! Thank youuuuu!!!
I'm bout to turn my glockenspeil into the dirtiest synth
yes!
ahahahaa!
As a guitarist, this video gonna save couple years of my lifetime. Thank a lot dude and merry Christmas!
OK I have been already using Reaper for years on end but THIS just blew my mind... I cannot thank you enough!
I've been wanting to use my guitar as a midi trigger and I had no idea it was this quick and easy. Thanks again Kenny!
This is beyond cool. The possibilities are mind boggling.

Congratulation and big THANKS for this great Reaper lesson! You answered some of my (many) questions 🙏😃 that come up while creating new DIY-songs ...
This is the first time I've consulted a tutorial, and I tried it, and it ACTUALLY WORKED. 😱

Great video. Had no idea this could be done natively within reaper. Thank you.
Absolutely what I needed right now!
once again.... thank you Kenny! goldmine!

Unreal! Kenny I have just tried this and it works a dream!! You Sir are a genius!! :-)
Great Tutorial, even better than your usual ones: You found a way to have a midi guitar with a regular guitar!!!
Gold pure gold❤️❤️❤️❤️
You can use the Kodai application, to record your instrument and convert to midi. It works with polyphonic recording.
This so useful. It is glitchy, which just adds to the vibe of what it does. Thanks for this.
I like your new video's thumbnail! It's more exciting and informative than the usual one.

that‘s aqesome, will use this to double bass notes with a sine wave!
Pretty awesome, never realized Reatune could output MIDI

Glad to help

very cool, wonder if it is possible to make a direct connection from Reaper with makemusic finale
That's dope!

Great tutorial, thanks.
