From what I can find out, it appears the architecture on the side of roads are larger examples of Mudéjar art which was brought to Iberia by muslims in the medieval times. The architecture was placed on the sides of the highway for the enjoymont of the drivers

@@Rob-on-the-Road No I didn’t make it to Ouistraham (ferry terminal). I stopped at a rest area on A20 north of Limoges, then went to catch ferry. Yes there is a routiers in Caen but it’s not a good place to stop if you are heading towards the ferry because of the risk of illegal immigrants.

Back in the days (2000 or so) the French used to fine you for things not done in France. IE: The Finnish police was not that hard on rest and driving time, as long that they could see you have had a good long sleep. It was the paper discs at that time, any dodgy rest/driving discs in the truck, could be expensive. The French police fined you for violations done days and 1000 km ago, and it wasn't cheap.
My GUESS is that this policy has been stooped now, when you can prove the violation ain't done in France. Bloody French.
