Rudy, Rudy, Rudy. Thankyou so much for finally doing this one. One of my favorites. Fun fact, Joe Montana was actually on the team with Rudy. He's done interviews about how the movie is dramatized.

Trivia for "Rudy":
1. Released in 1993, directed by David Anspaugh, written by Angelo Pizzo.
2. The same writer and director combination did the 1986 film "Hoosiers;" I'm from Indiana myself, and we love our basketball, so hopefully James gets to that one someday. :)
3. Rudy was the first film that was allowed to shoot on the real-life Notre Dame campus since "Knute Rockne, All-American" in 1940, which is the origin of the "win one for the Gipper" speech. These are the only two films to officially be shot on the Notre Dame campus.
4. Coach Dan Devine actually did let Rudy dress in real life, but they needed a more antagonistic character or else the film wouldn't work. Devine allowed the filmmakers to make him more unsympathetic, but I heard doing so ended up backfiring and going too far in the other direction.
5. Actors that we've seen on James' channel: Sean Astin as Rudy (from 50 First Dates and The Goonies); Robert Prosky as Father Cavanaugh (the TV studio boss in Mrs. Doubtfire); Chelcie Ross as Dan Devine (Eddie Harris, the junkball pitcher in Major League); Vince Vaughn as O'Hara, the running back that Parseghian chews out for lack of effort (Old School, Hacksaw Ridge, and Dodgeball); Jon Favreau as D-Bob (Dr. Ben in Elf). If I forgot any, somebody let me know.
6. Jason Miller, who played Coach Ara Parseghian, is the father of Jason Patric, who was the older son that becomes a vampire in "The Lost Boys."
7. The real Rudy Ruettiger appears in a cameo in the final crowd scene behind actor Ned Beatty, who played Rudy's father.
8. Twice in the film, Rudy scrolls his finger down on the dress list. Both players at the top of the list were the players who carried him off the field.
9. Also on the Notre Dame roster during Rudy's final game was a Hall of Fame, Super Bowl quarterback - that being Joe Montana.
10. The real Rudy Ruettiger served in the Navy for four years after he graduated from Joliet Catholic.

I really miss when Hollywood made wholesome films like this. Yes, it has been Hollywoodized as all True Stories are when they're told, but according to Rudy himself the film is 92% True.
One of the story arcs that differs from real life is his coach in the end being painted as an antagonist prompting the team to give up their jerseys for Rudy when in fact it was that coach that was Rudy's biggest supporter and it was HIS idea that Rudy should dress for that game.

One of the best movies there is! A real story of a young man following his childhood dream when everyone doubted him...Rudy didn't doubt himself and turned his dream into reality.

This is a well beloved movie as well as the true story of Rudy Rudiger. He did get that QB sack when he played originally. He went on to become a motivational speaker and has done well. I actually met him once when he was talking at the CIS convention in Las Vegas. A really good guy!
An early appearance of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau together. UGotta check out Swingers, the 90s godfather of modern buddy comedies that paved the way for all the movies like Old School and The Hangover. Fun fact: My name is Brian and I suggested this movie and Swingers after your Old School reaction, but I wasn’t the one who paid for this reaction. 😆
The guy with the familiar voice is Jon Favreau. He started as an actor, then moved into directing, producing, creating, writing…all of it. He was a major producer of the MCU, making a cameo as Iron Man’s chauffeur. He is also currently responsible for creating most of the new modern Star Wars series.
I am so happy to see how moved you were by this incredible (true, mostly) story. I am currently crying my eyes out. This is one of my dad's all-time favorites- he never fails to cry when Rudy sits on the bench after semesters of praying, lighting candles, working his butt off, and opens that letter saying he's been accepted to Notre Dame. It's one of those rare movies we can sit together and enjoy!
It always gets me choked up when they all place their jerseys on the coaches desk for Rudy.
Jon Favreau was also the director of Iron Man, among other films.

He also directed Elf. And I think James would love another Favreau early film, Swingers.

@@claymccoy yes, then years later they made a loose spiritual successor, Made. What I loved about that one is that Vince Vaughn basically played the same character only this time none of that swagger worked for him at all.
Rudy’s high school, Joliet Catholic, was actually all-boys until the early 1990s. Several NFL players have come from there (two recent ones were Tom Thayer, on the Bears Super Bowl team, and Mike Alstott). Just about all of the boys in my extended family went there, and I went to the sister school St. Francis, along with all the girls in my family (and Melissa McCarthy). JCHS’s class colors were brown and gold, btw.
Rudy is still a big deal in Joliet, doing talks and presentations in town and showing up in parades.
Already hit like. I'm sure you will enjoy this based on a true story film.

My nephew graduated from Notre Dame last May. He was on the football team for four years but never got in a game due to several injuries. But he did graduate with a business degree. You should react to "Breaking Away" if you want to see a similar feel good movie.
I went to Kutztown University in 92-95 and I lived in a house with 4 girls... (My game was good 😉).
One of the girls was dating a soon to be Denver Bronco, John Mobley. He and a lot of the K.U. football team would come down and hang at the house.
We all watched this and there was not a dry eye in the room.
The house was almost knocked down when Rudy got carried off the field and they all erupted and cheered when jumping around but still.

This was Jon Favreau's third acting job. He has since also become a producer, director and writer. He directed Elf, Iron Man 1 and 2. He produced all three Iron Man movies. He wrote, directed, and produced the first four seasons of 'The Mandalorian' which is a pretty popular Star Wars spin-off TV series.
In 1975 I was in high school and watched the real game on tv. When Tom Denim (the real ND sports announcer seen in this movie) said the chant was Rudy, I did not know who he was. Jump ahead years later and I have been to most the ND spots where they filmed, partly because of being a wedding videographer taping weddings there and also being an extra on two days when they filmed the last game. Filming the Rudy game action at half time of a real ND game was a great idea so that they could have a full stadium. Yes, they colored the story some to give the movie more heart, but Rudy and another player did get the sack. After Rudy saw the movie "Hoosiers" in 1987, he kept calling the writer and the director (Indiana grads) about doing his story until they finally saw the potential of this story. "Hoosiers" is also a story with a lot of heart that you should see, although I think "Rudy" is a little better made movie. But no way taking away from Hoosiers. Gene Hackman and Denis Hooper are great in their roles. Also using eight real high school players as the team made for some very real looking basketball games.
After Rudy got the sack his dad turns and grabs the guy behind him, that was the real Rudy.

I live about an hour south of Chicago - Rudy's brother was the football coach at my high school. PS Sean Astin was Drew Barrymore's brother in 50 First Dates :) He has actually been in a few Adam Sandler movies, I believe. I HIGHLY recommend Click!!!!
The score of this movie especially during the tryout scene is amazing.
Back when this was a pull option, I voted for and commented how I couldn't understand how someone had the opportunity to watch Sam Gamgee play football and it was even a question.
I grew up in an ND house. Graduated from ND in 2003. and I love this movie so much. Nice job reacting to it. I don't think many have on youtube.
More things you’d know are coming to me now. Rudy was one of the guys who wanted to take away the Nobel prize from Sheldon and Amy. And D-Bob was Monica’s millionaire boyfriend who wanted to became an ultimate fighting champion.

This movie is said to be 92% accurate which is pretty good for a movie based on a true person or story... Rudy Reuttiger actually has a cameo in the final scenes of the movie.

James, I am not sure if you have watched a film with Vince Vaughn but he was a character in this movie as well, he was the player the coach yelled at that he could have been All American if he had heart like Rudy.
Notre Dame South Bend Indiana. Yes Notre Dame is a Catholic School. Holy Cross College is situated next to Notre Dame. Rudy and his family lived in Joliet IL.

It’s pretty funny how Rudy was able to play all it took was for Joe Montana to get injured and the part where the team carries Rudy off the field the team actually was playing a joke on Rudy

The high school was Joliet (Illinois) Catholic which is about a 2 hour drive from Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
D-Bob (Jon Faverau) went on to become a famous independent writer/director/actor. He directed 'Elf'. He was Iron Man's bodyguard, he also was the director of Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

Jon Favreau wasn't just the doctor in Elf and Tony Stark's bodyguard in Iron Man. He was also the Director of both of those movies (among others), many people don't realize he as as known (if not more known) for his directing as he is for his acting.

I attended two Notre Dame games during that season but unfortunately not Rudy's game. But could see Touchdown Jesus from our seats. The helmets are gold leaf like the "golden dome" on a campus building. It is a beautiful campus. Thanks for watching this great heartwarming movie and your reaction.
Traditionally, Notre Dame does not put the players names on the back of their jerseys. My husband’s favorite movie.

@@AwesomeUSMovies it is unusual, and to be honest, they have been inconsistent with this tradition. The idea is that they play for something greater than themselves. However, the movie is right that the players had names on the jerseys during the Dan Devine coaching tenure. I don’t know if Rudy really had a jersey with no name.

Hall of Fame, Super Bowl quarterback Joe Montana was on this team. When the movie came out Montana said that nobody liked Rudy and that him getting carried of the field was a joke on Rudy. Even if that's true I think Joe was a jerk for saying it. Let Rudy have a bit of the limelight without crapping on the story.
33:32 No one really chanted his name. As a guest on The Dan Patrick Show on September 8, 2010, Joe Montana, who was an active member of the team when Ruettiger played in the Georgia Tech game, confirmed that the jersey scene never happened, stating: "It's a movie, remember. Not all of that is true...The crowd wasn't chanting, nobody threw in their jerseys. He did get in the ball game. He got carried off after the game."
Nearly 10 years later in an interview on Barstool Sports' Pardon My Take podcast, Montana reiterated that the jersey scene and crowd chanting did not actually occur. He also implied that carrying Ruettiger off the field was sarcastic rather than celebratory, saying: "Was there a lot of things that happened? Yeah. He got in, he got a sack. Was the crowd chanting? No. Did I throw in my jersey? No. Did he get carried off the field? He got carried off by three of the biggest pranksters on the team."

Enjoyed your honest non-cynical reaction. l love this movie, and I'm not a ND fan. This is among the big three best underdog sports movies in my book...Rudy, original Bad News Bears and Rocky. Hoosiers is up there. Many liberties were taken with the Rudy story but I don't care, this is a great feel-good movie if one can put away their biases and enjoy it for what it is. The music in all the movies mentioned is a big part of the magic.

In 2011 Rudy settled in a securities fraud case where he was involved in a pump and dump scheme. Had to pay 400k in fines.

Aside from being a great movie, composer giant Jerry Goldsmith wrote the musical score which is brilliant!!!
Jerry's music for this movie is incredible! Probably my favorite score next to his work on Star Trek,Alien, First Knight and Air Force One!

Loved the movie but they did kind of a Hatchet job on Dan Devine. He loved Rudy as much as anybody and he was all for getting him in the game.
I will also put a plug in for Memphis Belle. I really think you’d like that movie about a WWII bomber crew. Great ensemble cast that included Sean Astin.

Wow this is a great coming of age movie. Other great inspired by real life movies are Awakning and Lorenzo Oil. Another great Sean Austin movie Toy Soldiers. Fyi Jon Favreau is also a director and a producer of movies in the Mcu and others

The black guy has a tv show called Rock
Ironman's bodyguard Happy, who's The Chef.
Rudy was a real person, but the story in the movie is at least half BS. There's a lot of dramatic license.
There was a real person named Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger who did transfer from Holy Cross after being diagnosed with dyslexia, then successfully walked on to the football team and played on Senior Day against Georgia Tech his final year before being graduated.
Basically everything else in the movie is embellished or fabricated for the sake of making the story more fun though.
Some major differences between the movie and reality:
Rudy wasn't the youngest sibling in a large family. He was the oldest.
He enlisted in the Navy after HS, and while he had jobs on campus at things like a camp /retreat counselor, his VA GI Bill Benefits paid for much of his HC/Notre Dame education. The movie chose to omit this.
His family (father included) was actually very supportive. His brother didn't steal his gf either.
He didn't have to sneak into the football stadium to sleep. He was actually dormed for a while in Moreau Seminary under a program for similar older students (on-campus dorms were age-limited, and as a veteran with a few add'l years work experience he was too old for on-campus housing) and later lived in an apartment in the JACC as an upperclassman.
The admissions storyline was mostly fabricated. His HS grades were so awful they said he would need 4 good semesters at Holy Cross first to even stand a chance at ND admission. After his dyslexia was diagnosed, he got tutoring and his grades improved, so he started applying for transfer anyway. Admissions was unconvinced, but when he finally had 4 semesters of good HC grades to show he was admitted.
He didn't actually sneak onto football managers without a ND student ID so he could paint helmets and such. Those roles are actually quite competitive and they don't struggle to recruit. You can even earn a scholarship this way.
He did, however, sneak into Bengal Bouts boxing tournaments as a HC student, which was where the "Rudy! Rudy!" chant actually originated. People thought it was hilarious that this stout Navy veteran was pummeling the crap out of 18-year-olds.
Although he was shorter, he was pretty stout and wasn't super undersized at 5'6" and 185. Sean Astin was a lot smaller than the actual Rudy.
He didn't lack in athletic abilities and was good enough to make the practice squad on his own merit. He wasn't just picked for his "heart."
Dan Devine was quite supportive of walk-ons and entirely amenable to the idea of dressing him and putting him in on Senior Day when it was proposed. The rest of the "turning in jerseys" scene never happened, and Devine was actually quite upset about it.
Rudy actually got in before halftime on a kickoff or punt (return? I don't remember...) before being put back in again in the final minutes.
If you check the archives, there was clearly no profile in either The Observer or Scholastic that prompted the student body to begin chanting his name.
He was carried off the field, but it was mostly as a kind of joke, letting the guy have his minute of glory after a sack that was borderline unsportsmanlike since the outcome of the game was no longer in question and GT was just trying to run out the clock. Joe Montana was a teammate, and said in interviews he was quite annoyed about how it was portrayed in the movie.
