Hello Andrea ~ cherish the bond of loving Antiques with your Mom. My Mother didn’t like “old junk” she called it… I craved it and always did even as a child ! LOL!!! But I loved my Mom deeply anyways ❤️
Our youngest daughter LOVES to shop my home ! So I am blessed to have her share the love of “old items” and our oldest granddaughter who is getting married next summer too. God is so, so good that He passed that “gene” on to a daughter and granddaughter ( they are Aunt and Niece…LOL! ) I love it when they want to look at my stuff and talk about it.
How amazing is the story behind that Coal Miner Lamp ! How dangerous was it too!!! I can’t imagine.
I drool over old wood …. Stone walls ….. old barns ! Etc…etc ! Fence post sitting out in a field with wild vines growing around it ! It is peace to my soul ! LOL!!
Those watches are gorgeous! Love the material used , etc ! My husband does like to wear one. But those are handsome indeed!
Loved the video ! Thank you for sharing !
    God bless !

Hi Andrea. Your channel is the only one I’m subscribed to on RUclips because of your inherent knack for design coupled with your love for God. I think I’m drawn to the elements of your style because they remind me of how I decorated our first house 25 years ago...slate floors, white cabinets, nubby cotton textiles, stripped and waxed European pine antique furniture, rustic architectural-salvage pieces, lots of plants and little-to-no-color. I used to accent with old terra cotta then, where you accent with aged copper, which I keep my eyes peeled for now that you’ve inspired me. Your home embodies coziness and an authentic nod to history with the patinated pieces you choose to decorate with. You have beautiful taste and a beautiful family too! I think it’s funny that I look up to someone 20 years younger than me, but God works in mysterious ways and you’re clearly a vessel of His wisdom 😇
My comment is to suggest you use the Easy Off method again on the spoon holder. That old finish should scrub right off with a stiff-bristled brush and outdoor hosing. Afterward, you can use your bleach technique to bleach out the orangey-red and get it back to pale natural. Then you can choose a shade of Briwax to order from Amazon to wax it with. It’s how they waxed English pine to clean and protect the piece back in the day...authentic AND English. I’ve watched at least one English pine waxing tutorial on RUclips in the last two years. It’s easy and mineral spirits took off my 20-year-old layer of “Clear” Briwax, which was what my paint-stripped European pine pieces had been waxed with. The pine had mellowed to a too-dark shade of gold of for my liking over the years, so I used Briwax “Ebony” warmed up with a little Briwax “Light Brown”. When I wiped off the excess wax with a lint-free cloth, the natural wood showed through with an instantly-aged patina and a darkened, yet neutral look. This approach would “pop” with your new blackened dining chairs if you hang the spoon holder within that vicinity. Briwax also sells “Limewax”, which is for whitewashing and is far superior to Waverly’s version of white wax, which I tried and didn’t care for due to the yellow undertones in it. I wouldn’t be surprised if your English cottage style would get a sponsorship from Briwax. Also, consider Miss Mustard Seed’s “Antique Wax” which I’ve discovered is a must-have for my decor. On chalk painted items, it’s a lovely shade of mushroom. It makes any finish, raw wood or paint, look truly aged in a subtle way.
Good Luck with whatever you come up with for your grandparents antique spoon holder to complement your adorable home. I can’t wait to watch and see 👁✝️ God bless you and thank you for your continued inspiration🕊

Andrea since my family migrated from overseas with just a suitcase in hand (I'm a first generation American) I'll never be able to hold these historical family heirlooms! You're so lucky, and that great grandfather minor's light is stunning, never let it go! Hopefully it'll stay in the family through your boys, and their children, for years to come!

Everything you shared is absolutely wonderful! You are a blessed woman that both your mom and husband share and participate in your love of all things with a history. You can use that dustpan in all of the places you mentioned, but you can also use it to scoop up ashes from the hearth. I love the spoon holder with the drawer even as it is. I think your idea of using it in your office for paints and brushes is perfect. That miner’s lamp is so, so special! Even without the history, it is beautiful, but, oh my, knowing that your great-grandfather wore it makes it priceless! Don’t feel so bad about getting the cutting board AND the milking stool. If your husband was really concerned about paying for both, I think he would have talked you out of buying it. Your husband reminds me of mine in this regard - he loves to bless me with gifts that he knows I will love. That milking stool is so beautiful! Thanks again for sharing! Blessings!❤️

The helmet lantern is a carbide lamp not an oil lamp. If the seal is in good condition it could still be usable. They give off a nice stable light. It’s most likely from around the 1920’s. The light is the same that were first used as head lamps in early automobiles because they were used on carriages. We have a vintage vehicle in our neighborhood that uses them otherwise I wouldn’t know any of this. 👍🏻 hope the information helps.

the dust pan would be a great floral/greens display hung upside down, accent w a vintage doily hanging over the edge,, w/wo the doily it would be great w greens in it! the wood piece from your mom, I would give it a white/grayish barnwood color get a old looking label, or Cricut cut stencil or transfer to apply to the background in black or charcoal and sand it a bit to look old and worn. find some interesting old spoons or new ones and spray w a paint that is like your beat up galvanized tins or just collect old unique wood or silver spoons to hang up there. I also noticed enough slots to provide each child their own slot or vintage baby spoons, paint their initial on the spoons. you could just paint some spoons black and pound and distress them. I'm getting into collecting some old crocheted hot pads, my new "gotta get" I have some from my grandma. Hope you get alot of ideas. can't wait to see what you come up w. Oops another one's. could be a great toothbrush hanger w a toothpaste drawer.

You could put small strips of wood across where the spoon cutout is (behind) and one on the shelf above and hang measuring cups and spoons. On the very top, one of your grandmothers favorite recipes. Or old kitchen tools like a pastry cutter, manual whisk etc. in the bottom pocket.

Also, my husband surprised me with a custom made copper mixing bowl to fit on my commercial sized Kitchen aid last Christmas! It was the sweetest and most thoughtful gift and I was so surprised because it was extremely expensive and I would have never spent the money. I adore how beautiful it looks sitting on the counter. You’ll probably find tons of places to use the milk stool over the years as you “play house” ☺️ I’m so happy you got one for your home, I’ve always dreamed of having one too, especially because we have six generations of dairy/beef farmers in our family in Ohio! The "reddish" spoon shelf might not seem so "red" if it's not displayed in view of other wood. With the white porcelain knob, it would be great on a white wall or with other white/cream wall decor by a door or the stair landing or wherever where it's not competing with lots of other wood tones.
Thought for your mom: I'm 65, widowed but learning to let go. I'd rather my kids have family treasures now to use as they wish (even painted) so the memories of our departed family stay alive. I applaud your letting these cherished family items pass down the line now rather than later. The young will keep what they feel connected to and the sooner they enjoy them, the better.
    Blessings to you all!

No, it’s not weird that you love old metal ! I love rust ! When my boyfriend & I were first dating, I kind of shocked him by buying some sconces at a flea market, sanding them down, letting them rust outside for a while & then hanging them on a wall ! He would tell people that story - lol - these days I use those 2 part kits that make actual rust & I also have some favorite paints that simulate rusty edges really well, for when you can’t get the real thing - my mom was not really into the rusted, distressed look that I love, but we both loved to thrift & go to flea markets - we could sometimes find duplicates of things like sconces, but would paint or refinish them in very different ways - my sister & I are kind of like that, too - I would have bought that dust pan in a heartbeat ! And I would definitely give your great grandfather’s miner light a place of prominence - so, so cool to have an item with that family history attached - and then every time someone sees it or comments on it, you could tell that story - although I would probably tear up every time - lol - greetings from sunny Florida 😍

@Lydia Boswell - my family on my mother’s side are French - my grandmother’s maiden name was actually LeCoq - I have a small collection of roosters in my kitchen - I love them & it reminds me of my heritage ☺️

The miners light would be so pretty resting on some books. ( not that you need help 😉)
My sister put candles in her brass, wall basket. Loved the haul, Andrea.✨

Lovely haul, I can tell you're thrilled with these acquisitions for your home. When I saw that spoon cabinet, I immediately thought of Sherry, who has a channel called Canterbury Cottage. She is a maestro at re-finishing items, and then styling them to perfection. Hopefully your dear mother won't mind your making a few subtle changes so that you can re-purpose that cabinet to fit somewhere in your home. Greetings from Australia!!

Love everything, I think paint the spoon box and hang it in your office with the paint brushes in it , so so cute. I went to Hobby Lobby yesterday, I had my eye on this French country mirror the frame is black and they put it on sale 50% off. So excited to add a little black around the house it really pops. I hung it over my Fireplace.

You defenetly can and should paint the spoon holder, first seal it with spray sealer, then paint it with chalk paint light distressed and a wax sealer adorable!

    • @Melody-285
      @Melody-285 2 года назад +1

@Kim Santa Maria - that’s what I would probably do, too - I would probably try to paint it while kind of leaving the edges without paint and then wet distress to blend it on the edges - I think the wood color would look perfect just along the places that would maybe have worn or chipped off naturally

Andrea did you ever think of using the dust pan turned upside down on your wall with greens or flowers in it. You could just glue a saw hook on the back and that way it would not be damaged. I would paint the spoon holder but that is just me. Where you use the milking stool would be beautiful.I would think it would look great in your living room near your two chairs. Where ever you use them I know they will look amazing. I guess since I retired as a designer I am missing the consulting . My mind keeps going and I changing my home almost every week. God bless you.

You have some beautiful things! That milking stool!!😍😍😍 I would love to find one of them! As far as the spoon shelf. I would try to take the finish off and bleach it like you’ve done some of your other pieces. If it didn’t turn out well you could always paint it then.

Two things: 1. Buy colored wax to cover the wood. You just rub it on, and buff when it dries. Leaves a really soft patina. 2. To remove melted wax… place old newspaper or paper towels in the sink. Boil water and pour it over the item. The wax melts and the paper catches it. So happy to see the copper scoop, and the stool.

Hi Andrea, its lovely that you got some smaller pieces from your grandad the spoon rack and drawer it so sweet , ⁵could you lightly sand it down to make the wood a paler tone...or chalk paint it either wood be nice ..x

I think that box is actually for utensils and knives. That's what it looks like it holds knives and then maybe cooking utensils. I would strip it and keep it wooden toned.
