As a Toyota technician working in Quebec, I am feeling a little stupid watching you guys go through my daily struggles on my day off.😂
🤣
It's like me using a front loader at work then coming home and playing simulators lol
Gotta move west, dude. As someone who left PEI and moved out to BC many years ago, I was stunned to see 90s cars still on the road as daily drivers. 20 year old trucks with black frames, and original rockers
@@joshuacurley417 I’m from BC lol, I went the wrong way 🥲
@@StreetShamann hahahhaha never met anyone from BC when I lived in Quebec! Definitely not a common story. I guess the saying is true, "the grass is always greener on the other side!"
Honestly I love watching you guys struggle a bit to work on vehicles, just makes me happy to know that I am not the only person to struggle with a "straightforward" job.
Real world, rust belt life! Thanks guys!
"Straightforward" jobs are always bound to be harder than they seem... Murphy's law and all that. Ask me how I know lol
@@mmmbetter55 yup, one rusty broken bolt away from a 3 day job.
Especially when they are trying not to poke holes, on the Tundra 🤣
Amen
I'm a Toyota tech from Québec, I just wanted to let you guys know that we have to cut lower control arms for replacement on ALL taco or tundra that's more than 5 years old lmao. And if they're coming for an alignement, 90% of the time we can't do the camber or caster since the bolts are seized in the bushing lmao so we usually suggest getting new arms... Welcome to the salty North!
Imagine doing this job in the old garage? What a nightmare that would have been. Thank goodness for heat and a hoist! Excited for the remaining episodes.
As a fellow Canadian Tundra owner, I really enjoy these truck updates
Same. I want to do all this same stuff. Bring on the bloody knuckles
As a Canadian Toyota tech it makes me happy that a bit more people know that it can be kind of a pain to work on a rusty tundra
It's quite interesting to me, I live in Australia and work on hilux's & land cruisers. The tundra seems to be exactly the same as a hilux, just a wider body. Definitely a rookie mistake not putting WD40 over everything a few days before starting. It's all coming apart quite easily compared to what I'm used to.
The Tundra...the unsung hero, the fan favorite, the myth, the legend is getting some more well deserved love. Like the topper BTW. 👍
CarTube is the only normal non-clown world thing left in my life, thank you for the videos. 🙏
Still driving my 2002 tundra everyday 4x4 works like a dream in snowy conditions 350k miles and counting !
Love my First Gen Tundra
Big salt should be on a T Shirt. So glad I live in the south.
This is awesome! Most RUclipsrs make being a mechanic look so easy! And I enjoy seeing them struggle like all us normal people do.
The struggle is real! You guys captured everything DIY enthusiasts in the rust-belt face.
The struggle is real! Always envious looking at those California cars getting fixed with no rust!
On the LCA nuts/bolt - one of my engineers once told me while I was stuck on an axle nut that I needed FORCE + SHOCK. (that's why impact guns are so efficient. lots of shock)
So I put a large breaker bar plus an additional cheater tube onto the nut, once I got a lot of force on to it, I had a second person smack the end of the socket side of the breaker bar with a mallet. And just like that, the nut broke lose.
Thought this insight might help with further project. Keep up the awesome work.
Thanks! All that rust battle deserves a bonus.
Just did basically exactly this to my 1996 gmc sierra, all 4 control arms off and needle scaled, new joints and bushings. It was a mission. Probably 10 or 15 pounds of rust and dirt came off of it.
As a Canadian, I felt every bit of pain you felt.
Im also going to say I miss this longer format with less panning and music. But I will watch regardless so you guys do what ever gets the views!
This one hit hard, just replaced the suspension on my 2014 Tundra and ran into all these problems. The only difference, I was working off jack stands. Keep up the great work!
Since you guys do alot of towing I would highly recommend replacing the rear leaf springs with new heavy duty leaf packs. I did this on my Tundra and it really improved ride quality while towing and unloaded. General Spring offers new leafs at reasonable prices
Cool idea, never considered that, but will definitely look into it!
@@speedacademydave 🙌
As someone from the north east I just go strait to the Sawzall when removing lower control arms. Saves alot of time
I would hit as many areas as I could under there with some por15 or eastwood rust converter to give it a few more years. New trucks are so expensive, it's to the point where I think I can rust proof and replace every wear item (including the engine and trans) on my 1999 Z71 Silverado with about 500k km on it and still be in the green versus buying a new one. This is such awesome content, keep it coming!
it is so much more fun to watch you guys actually take off and put the part in instead of just skipping straight to when its all done! love the longer episodes :)
As a Michigander, this hits home! Something that should take an afternoon, takes a weekend with rust belt cars!
I literally just completed replacing my lower control arms on my ‘13 Tacoma. Although not rusty, I knew beforehand that those cam bolts are notorious for seizing inside the bushing. So I had replacements and saved the time and just went straight to the saw. Saved a lot of time and swearing especially when working on just jack stands
Lol as the proprietor of this exact same truck in Ontario who has done all of these jobs on jackstands in their driveway, I feel your pain x1000 guys.
After watching you guys using the boltbuster on Moose’s car back in the day, I bought it shortly after doing the same job. Such a lifesaver. Always a pleasure watching it in action because it’s so damn cool and satisfying!
I live in southeast US and I bought a 2013 GX460 that spent some time in Connecticut. I thought the rust on mine was bad.... Mine looks pristine in comparison. So... Thank you Speed Academy for helping me feel great about my rust issues.
Rustastic!!! We don't see enough of the Tundra, I'm glad you guys are revamping it. It's a good looking truck
Love the Tundra! That 5.7 has to be just about broken in. I have a ‘21 4runner. I put some Wool Wax on her from new to hopefully prevent some of these rust headaches in the future here in New Jersey. My TE37s should finally be here this month after over a year of waiting!
Yay for aluminum suspension components!! Just North of Lake Ontario here, 114K miles on my G / original FUCAs & FLCAs / no body rust / rear sub-frame has a few years left. Krowned every year.
Much respect to the guys who deal with this five days a week. You all have alot of patience.
I’m so glad this series is back I miss the tundra vids i love tundra I have mine with barely 140k love it
You're speaking my language, salt belt dweller here. Must be nice to have a lift, cuts the job in half (not really), but you can never avoid the pain of wrestling with rusty bolts. And... thanks for documenting this, I have a feeling this video will come in handy when I have to replace everything on my '07 Tundra.
As a former/future Midwest US resident, this was satisfying for the most depressing of reasons. I was with you for every bolt that broke clean.
Watching this video gave me many flashbacks to putting a new suspension in my old Dodge Dakota. Its cool to see guys actually showing themselves struggle on projects like this!
As someone from Buffalo, NY….this video triggers so many bad memories from vehicles past… 😂
The super duty pads are great. I live in northern Canads as well and did a similar overhaul on our 2500 Suburban that has 240 000km.Also dis a complete suspension rebuild with Bilstein and got a bodyshop to remove all the undercarriage rust. Cost me around 10 Cad to get another solid 10-12 years out of this tank.
ah, the ol bolt buster, a favorite amongst BMW enthusiasts
I work at a Toyota dealer so this is a very familiar experience.
What a battle! They don’t salt the roads here they just pour tons of gravel which just chews up windshields and paint. Nice job!
seeing you guys work and love your rusty vehicles makes me appreciate mine way more. great content. Thank you
Truck looks amazing!!! I love Tundras!! Appreciate you leaving the struggles, it's real!! I went through the same fight with my MKIII supra camber bolts - no human should ever have to go through that!!!
Love the rawness, showing the southern guys our struggles living in a rust belt! Great job guys keep it up!!
That bed cap looks perfect
Its snowing rust inside the shop!!!!!! 🤣🤣
Good thing every part on the Tundra is HUGE
I'm going to be a nerd, I love that you all use proper PPE when using power tools, hammers and punches, compressed air, and hazardous fluids. Does the "Safety Sally" in me proud.
I love the fact that the only difference between their Tundra and mine is the cab size and their Tundra is a 4X4 :) so works out great for when i can afford to work onto work on my 2008 Tundra :) Thanks guys
Love the video, I work for a Toyota dealer in the rust belt and this is me working on every tundra
Thanks for actually showing what it's like to work on a rusty car.
Yes! I’m always happy to see you guys update us about your tundra! I bought my 2013 tundra crew max this year. Your videos on the truck got me liking the tundra enough to where I bought one.
Main reason I ended up buying my tundra was off this guy as well.
Toppers on 4×4's are awesome. I've always ran one, so much practicality, needs a roof rack/basket
I've been there. Changed the control arms on my truck over the summer and after 3-4 hours of struggling with the lower bolts...I just gave up, got the torch, a saw and cut the arm bit by bit. First lobbed off the main body of it, then cut the bolts on both sides of the arm mounts and used a air hammer to push the remaining bolts out.
I have 189k miles on my 2008 Tundra... tow with it all the time, work it every weekend... and I did the same caliper setup about 2 years ago now. so far so good... we do the 100k miles maintenance every 50k though.
Im from Texas and seeing your guys videos only solidifies my desire to stay in Texas 😄 keep up the good work, gentlemen. Its great to watch
excited, reviving old tundras will be all the jazz
Think this convinced me to finally get a bolt buster. Sometimes the torch is just too aggressive and the flame splash can rather dicey at times
Nice, love the tundra! I would love to see them do a facelift conversion with some off-road bumpers.
Fluid-film every fall and you'll never have rust problems
I have this same exact set up. I bought the truck used and it happened to have the same bed cap. I thought I would take it off, but I ended up falling in love with it.
Its great to see yall struggle just like everyone else. Im always discouraged when it takes me however much longer than expected but seeing yall made me feel better.
I love everything about this video. I used to tool around with an old '99 4Runner that was rusted just like this Tundra and it makes me think of those days. So many times I was laughing but also crying along with you all because I know the struggle... I didn't have a lift though, so at least you have that over me 😂
As a Canadian I love watching you guys struggle with rusty parts (sorry not sorry). Lol, this is real life.
I really enjoyed watching Pete sweeping up all that rust.
Love it. I have an 07 FJ and just did all new upper and lower control arms and rear links. This is absolutely spot on for the struggle.
Thanks for scratching that “sadists” itch. I think every one of us fellow wrench turners knows your pain all too well and it’s kinda nice to know we aren’t alone.
Great video! Love the Tundra updates. I watched your previous videos before we bought out 21 Tundra
It’s nice to see the real side of being a mechanic 👍🏽
I love this. Now I appreciate more the ingenuity that men has put in to build this society. I feel more manly watching this and I appreciate the technicians who work for the price that they charge.
From northern Indiana, pretty much the exact same experience I had with the lower arms in my 2011 Tacoma except I was working on jack stands. 😳 Ended up with the sawzall on the bolts, oddly enough, mostly on the passenger side as well. There is some serious evil that goes on inside those lower arm mounts. I actually chuckled the first time I saw you with the sawzall in hand. I kinda figured you would get there eventually. 😂 Anyway, great video, I was watching because I'm probably adding a Tundra to the garage sometime this year. Thanks for taking the time to put this together...
Its gonna sound terrible but it kinda feels good to see someone else struggle with Toyota front LCA's 😅(I live outside of Chicago so we get salt) I had to do lower control arms on my Gx470 and I didn't even bother trying to save the bolts and eccentric adjusters. I just bought all new hardware, whipped out the sawzall and chopped them boys off.
Big fan of the Dollarama work gloves... Not even sarcasm.
Pete's about that Dollarama work glove life! Expensive work gloves make no sense, they get ruined too quickly on jobs like this.
I can’t express the joy I have watching you guys struggling a bit with this 😂😂😂
For the lack of Rust Valley Restorations, Speed Academy steps in! How much Por15 will it take to stave off the rust remaining on the Tundra's parts??
oddly satisfying video for sure Dave & Pete
Hall and Shouf > Hall and Oates.
Boys, time to get Crown as a sponsor! 😂 Wax-type undercoating is absolutely useless for the rust belt.
Best 2 upgrades to my 08 Tundra Limited was to install the TRD Sway-bar. The second was ditch the 20 inch wheels for 18s and install a set of Michelin Defender LTX M/S. The sway-bar took out the wandering and the tires gave me a smooth quite ride. 3rd was to upgrade the headlights. I went with Morimoto LED. They are okay but I think I would have liked HID to add a bit of yellow. I suggest trying to break the sway-bar bolts loose before ordering one. The bolt that goes into the lower control arm was a bear to get loose almost to the point of giving up and that was on a Southern California truck.
I'm gonna send you fellas some PB Blaster.
It's like looking into my future and what to look for when I buy a Toyota Sequoia of similar year. And yes, I do like and miss this old format of the realism of reality that you guys do so well. Rusty bolts... so glad I'm not the only one, but that bolt buster is expensive!
I am at 190ish miles on my '08 tundra. Same color so im living vicariously through you guys. I also have a cap. IMO it looks ugly buy very useful. I am planning all fluids and waterpump, struts, etc in spring. Its a beast in bad snowy weather. My only complaint is the fuel tank should be larger since it sucks on mpg. Also the end pipe on my muffler broke off at the same spot this year. I have no plans on replacing it.
It does need a larger fuel tank, I agree with you there!
Growing up on PEI we were taught to use our parking break all the time (unless it was going from warm to deep freeze) because if it seized up, your rig would fail yearly inspection.
It's a habit that has stuck with me, not that I need to worry about it in BC. We don't get much rust out here.
As someone that lives an hour away, watching race car mechanics struggle trying to work on real cars is delightful. That’s not even rusty yet!
No penetrsting oil? Wouldn't have worked on some of these, but probably less heat needed and makes things easier. Always worth a try
I have the Eibach Pro 1 coilovers on my my 2013 Tundra and love them. Best way to level it while retaining good ride quality & handling. Also running Camburg rear shackles with the matching Eibach shocks in the rear. Overall adds up to a really nice budget setup .
I'm so glad that red stuff isn't much of an issue here in Colorado.
Just a normal day to work on vehicles in Ontario Canada. Let the rust RAIN!
The anxiety that I felt during this episode has made me never want to step foot anywhere north of the Mississippi ever again. Move to Texas like I did gentlemen!!!
aside from the shitstorm local government/politics there, you make a compelling point about moving to TX. I purchased my 2010 Sequoia from TX, and after owning it for 2+yrs and doing maintenance like this up here in the Midwest, i have had zero rust issues to deal with, opposed to the SA gents. heh
Finally another tundra upgrade - miss my 2011 but love my 2019
Literally the most relatable video you've made!
I went over my truck this past summer, removed rust, sealed with woolwax and replaced my suspension with Eibach pro truck coilovers. Absolutely love them for a mid level suspension!
Just need some deaver 13 pack leaf springs.
Alright boys, that truck is MINT by our standards out here in Newfoundland. Thanks for your content!
As a fellow Atlantic Canadian, I agree! Funny enough, I live in BC now and a truck that looked like that here would be a write off. It would be tough as hell to sell. There are 30 year old farm trucks out here that have less rust than this Tundra
We do salt here in BC. A brine solution gets sprayed on the roads before snow and granular salt after. People still don't know how to drive though. And many do without proper snow tires. The snowfall at the beginning of December causes a 12 hour delay in traffic.
Enjoy all the vids on this truck and your efforts to rejuvinate it. Take good care of your workhorses and they will take care of you.
sure fells like working on an high mileage toyota truck. my 2003 4runner looks pretty much the same. hammer, heat, and 6 foot long tube to get anything off the truck. glad you made a video that reflects the reality of thoses trucks.
This made me feel SO much better about spending 10 days talking the original trailer hitch off and putting a brand new Curt trailer hitch on the extremely rusted rear
This was honestly so entertaining. Automotive schadenfreude. Studying rusty bolt removal from the Canadians!
16:11 was a time where you should have repositioned. You are holding back strength for when the bolt breaks loose to stop yourself getting hit in the face or falling over. I would have set the bar higher and pushed up towards the frame so you have the strength of your legs. Just something I learned being a small guy.
Rusty, salty Iowa checking in here. Been working on cheap crusty cars for years. I feel your pain.
When I did UCA’s on my midwestern Tacoma, I cut the bolts out, and then installed them from the rear side where there was a lot more room
Did most of this myself in the driveway on my 08 Tundra. I didn't mess with the parking break or do the upper and lower control arms since they were still in good shape. 1st time on your channel and just subscribed. I'll be interested in what else you do for the refresh as to also do it to my 08.
I just moved down south to OK from MN. I won't miss doing this.
Awesome! Cant wait for the results! Nothing better than giving an old girl the love she needs.
